DR TOPHAM'S RESEARCH FUND (BRIGHT FUND) Registered Charity No: 1064857 A charitable trust constituted by Deed of Trust dated 1st May 1997
TRUSTEES' ANNUAL REPORT
The Trustees are pleased to present the annual report and accounts for the year ended 5th April 2021, which, for the third year, now includes the results of the Liver Cancer Surgery Appeal which has been combined with the BRIGHT Fund from 5th April 2018. The objects of the charity are to provide public benefit as follows:
-
Ongoing research into improving treatment options and outcomes for patients with Gl and HPB cancers.
-
The purchase of new equipment for a whole range of Gl and HPB cancer treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy.
The policy of the Trustees is to attract donations and other fundraising income to maintain the charity's reserves at a level at least sufficient to meet its commitments to current and planned research projects and equipment purchases.
In addition, part funding was provided for an immunotherapy trial being managed by one of the Trustees of the Charity, which amounted to £35,772
The Charity has previously funded Brachytherapy equipment for the specialised treatment of certain rectal cancers and a standardised process for Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) has been established.
The Charity funded the acquisition of new surgical equipment (NanoKnife) to help treat pancreatic cancer. This uses irreversible electroporation (IRE), using electrical currents, to damage and destroy cancer cells. The cost of the equipment was £239,000 but the ongoing costs of consumables and maintenance will be covered by the NHS Trust.
Net expenditure for the year is £241,348 and the reserves are sufficient to fund the balance of expenditure to completion of outstanding projects. These funds continue to be invested in deposit accounts with UK clearing banks or similar investment facilities.
Signed by the Chairperson on behalf of all the Trustees

Independent examiner's report to the Trustees of Dr Topham's Research Fund ( the "Trust")
I report on my examination of the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 5th April 2021, which are set out on the accompanying pages.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
As the charity's trustees, vou are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the Charities Act 2011 (the Act). The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144{2)of the Act and that an independent examination is needed.
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Basis of independent examiner's report
An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect:
-
the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Act; or
-
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
-
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
