As a result of the 2009 amendment to Society Rule 7, 6 Members of the Council are due to retire by rotation and the Council should consist of 18 members.

Members due to retire by rotation in 2023 are: Mr B Ingram, Mrs S Kempe, Ms T Nineham, Mr M Fry, Mrs S Young and Mrs L Lang. All except Mrs S Young are willing to stand again and have been duly nominated and seconded. Mrs S Young is standing down. Ms Lyndsey Hayter has been nominated and seconded. There are no other nominations, no election is necessary.

MINUTES OF THE TWENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE NEW FOREST PONY BREEDING AND CATTLE SOCIETY HELD AT LYNDHURST COMMUNITY CENTRE ON FRIDAY 13 MAY 2022, 7.30 pm

Present: 53 members signed the attendance record.

The Minutes of the Twenty-Fourth AGM held on Friday 26 March 2021 remotely by Zoom. H Palmer proposed, and P Pidgley seconded, acceptance of the Minutes, which had been printed in the 2021 Annual Report, and taken as read. All who voted were in favour, with no votes against. The Minutes were approved and signed.

There were no Matters arising from the Minutes.

The 2021 Annual Report and Statement of Accounts.

The Chair of the Council, Mrs Suzanne Kempe, gave a brief presentation, highlighting the International Meeting, the breed show and the point to point.

The Treasurer, Mrs Kathleen Clarke, read her report. No questions had been received regarding the Statement of Accounts. A Pidgley proposed, and J R Gerrelli seconded, acceptance of the 2021 Annual Report and Accounts. There were no votes against.

The Council 2022

As a result of the 2009 amendment to Society Rule 7, 6 Members of the Council are due to retire by rotation and the Council should consist of 18 members.

Council had agreed to the appointment of Miss Dionis Macnair as the Society’s Honorary Consultant, unfortunately she was unable to be present to receive an award in recognition of her outstanding dedication to the breed.

Honorary Life Membership

Council had nominated Mr Andrew Napthine for his long service to the Forest community during his 29 years as an Agister of the New Forest, and there were no votes against.

Any Other Business

No items had been received in writing to the office at least seven days before the meeting.

The Performance Pony Competition prizes and the Knightwood Part-Bred Pony Performance Competition prizes were awarded.

An engraved glass tumbler was awarded to Erika Dovey and Nutschullyng Bewitched for winning the President’s Cup for the best First Cross in the Ladies Race, Point to Point, three years in succession. The meeting ended at 8.20 pm, and the raffle was drawn, and refreshments served.

REGISTRATION DATES AND FEES 2023

All breeders should ensure that they have read the document ‘Registration Guidance and Fees for 2023 Foals’ . By signing the Registration Application Form, you are confirming that you have read and understood the document and accept the terms and conditions.

The breeder is responsible for completing the registration form and microchipping the foal (except those eligible for the Forest-run derogation).

The final date for submission of forms, as set down in the Equine Identification (England) Regulations 2018 is 30 NOVEMBER 2023.

Please register your foals as early as possible; do not delay in sending in your forms;

Ensure that all mares are transferred into the breeder’s ownership;

Consider microchipping your stud-bred foals as soon as possible after birth.

It is very important that all entrants for all Beaulieu Road Sales are registered as early as possible, so that there is sufficient time for the passports to be made up before the sale. This will particularly apply to the September Sale – you will need to start the registration process by early August. Do not delay.

COMPULSORY MICROCHIPPING OF ALL EQUINES

The Equine Identification (England) Regulations 2018 required that all horses in England (apart from those covered by the New Forest semi-feral derogation) were microchipped by 1 October 2020 .

It is now expected that at all Society events and competitions, with the exception of the ForestFed competition, all ponies will be microchipped. No award will be made to a pony that is not microchipped in accordance with the law.

All entrants to Beaulieu Road Sales must be microchipped. This covers both foals and all other ponies of whatever age, in all the sections. Please ensure that the number is reported to the Society and recorded on the database before the sale.

Transfers - please ensure that all older ponies are microchipped before sending in a Transfer of Ownership.

The objects for which the Society is established are: to encourage the preservation and breeding of the best type of New Forest ponies; to undertake to record New Forest ponies and enter them in the New Forest Pony Stud Book; and to hold an annual show for the encouragement and improvement of the breed of New Forest ponies. Having due regard to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance, the Society presents its financial accounts and this report on its activities in 2022 in which it sees its main achievements as the successful recording of New Forest ponies and the promotion and preservation of the breed.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2022

There have been many memorable moments in our year in office but would like to comment on a few of very special significance. Firstly, the presentation made to Dionis Macnair at our President’s reception at the Breed Show. Words cannot adequately express the contribution she has made and dedication she has shown to the breed. It was lovely to be able to say thank you in front of so many that have benefitted from her efforts and dedication. Secondly, the Point to Point successfully running within the very restrictive confines imposed by the authorities. It still managed to be the highlight of Christmas for so many. The number of people and time involved in ensuring that it continues is huge. The dedicated people involved in running it, need not only our thanks but our support as well. The third thing and in many ways the most exciting is the young judge’s initiative. Everything that can be done to keep young people interested in the breed and encourage them to come forward for the judge’s assessment, must be hugely beneficial for the future of our New Forest ponies.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

2022 has seen a more normal year with the return of shows across the country with more excellent results for our breed as you will read in this excellent annual report put together by Jane.

I have recently been researching some history on our breed and it is very interesting that while in recent years we welcomed support from the Verderers, the CDA and the NF Livestock Society in maintaining the profile of the ponies it is fascinating to read of the ‘improvement’ schemes

over the last 150 years. These have always highlighted the importance of our breed even if some of the ‘improvement’ was not always so suitable for semi-feral ponies. The premium scheme for the ‘non-hand-fed/Forest-Fed’ competition that we still run has for decades been in place to reward the ponies of a good native type with good conformation, with an emphasis on encouraging good breeding mares to be retained on the Forest. Back in 1912 the Royal Commission published papers on the National Value of our native M&M ponies and their importance as a foundation for all light horses including thoroughbreds. This is still very relevant today with some very talented part-bred ponies out competing in all disciplines.

We continue to see the very positive results feeding through from our present-day schemes - the Verderers stallion scheme, our Futurity scheme and the mare grading as well as the earlier mare bloodline scheme, and we are grateful for the funding from the HLS via the Verderers. It is rare to see a poor-quality mare on the Forest these days. The prices at the online sales held in place of Beaulieu Road and the prices achieved for ponies sold privately have certainly ‘backed up’ the work that has been done with demand for the ponies UK wide.

The Society hosted our International Meeting for our filial studbooks over the breed show weekend and we are grateful to all those that helped make it a success. The delegates very much enjoyed their visits to the studs over the weekend, thank you to the hosts.

I have spent time in the office last autumn assisting with the passport/registration work - with October and November being incredibly busy. On behalf of the office team I would implore breeders to get their registration papers in as early as possible - there is no reason to leave studbred foals until November to complete their paperwork. The Forest-bred foals can also be birth notified at a much earlier stage which also lessens the workload in November.

My time in the office has certainly made me very aware of the volume of work, alongside taking complicated phone calls and receiving visitors with piles of paperwork. I am very grateful to Ann and Jane for their dedication to the office through those busy months as well as our treasurer Kathy who kept very busy collating all the payments that arrive via BACs, PayPal, cheques and cash - not an easy job!

SOCIETY SECRETARY’S REPORT 2022

It was a pleasure and a relief to see a return to a normal year after the trials and tribulations of the two previous Covid-19 years. Our year traditionally starts with the Forest-Fed competition where a couple of our B-Panel judges thoroughly enjoyed themselves and honed their skills judging the mares in their native habitat. Oakwood Locket won the coveted Dale Memorial cup, with Rushmoor Daylight in reserve. We returned to a live AGM where we were able to present awards to the winners in the annual performance pony competition. Not surprisingly entries were low as 2021 was so badly affected by Covid, but this did not stop Erin Dovey and Moneyhills Pageant who amassed a huge score and took most of the trophies.

In the spring we held a Study Day and Probationer Judges Assessment rolled over from last year’s cancellation, although we still played it safe and limited numbers. Robert Maton, one of the Forest agisters, gave an excellent presentation on the Forest-run ponies, looking at the terrain and conditions in which they live, and the importance therefore of good feet, limbs, depth and a strong jawline, all of which are evidence of good type. Gill Wright led a practical session with some ridden ponies who compete in various disciplines and atter viewing them under saddle

they were stripped and assessed in-hand for type. The day included a probationary assessment and we were most pleased to be able to appoint two Probationer Judges.

We were able to hold our usual colt inspection in early April with ten colts passing the judges’ assessment. In the afternoon we held another round of our yearling colts futurity scheme; funding for this comes from the Verderers HLS scheme for which we are most grateful. Six yearling colts were selected for the communal grazing provided under the scheme which enables them to live together naturally as a herd, and we hope they will progress to licensed status next year.

A very special day was enjoyed by the local Forest community on 28 May at Salisbury Racecourse, when the 6.45 race was named in honour of the wonderful Dionis Macnair MBE; 92 years young, she judged the best turned out and welcomed the winning owners to the podium for the presentation. It was a glorious celebration of the wonderful dedication Dionis has given to our breed and the Society.

All our elite scheme scoring shows were able to run their normal breed classes this year. HIghfox Heaven Sent was champion at the Northern Supporters Show. Champion at the Bath and West was Woodrow Delights Gift with Woodrow the Warrior in reserve. At Three Counties, Hurtstock Cornish Amber won the ridden NF class, and the 3-year-old filly Brock Briana was champion in-hand with the stallion Peronne Notorious in reserve. It takes a considerable amount of time throughout the summer adding all the relevant results from elite scoring events into the Grassroots database, from which the elite reports are derived.

The New Forest Pony Enthusiasts Club held one of our elite shows at the New Park showground in early July, where Trenley Tamara, owned and bred by James Young and Trudy Nineham, progressed through the ranks from winning both the novice mare/gelding and the mare classes to the NF owner/breeder championship, the NF in-hand adult championship, the NF in-hand championship and on to the NF supreme championship and NPS silver medal. Woodrow the Warrior was youngstock champion and Pilley Charm Forest-bred in-hand champion. Under saddle, Hurtstock Cornish Flame and Harwoodhouse Hiccup won the two open sections and Doorage Olympic Boy won the stallion class and the ridden championship.

The New Forest County Show made a welcome return to the calendar after a two-year absence, albeit with the loss of many HOYS qualifiers including the popular M&M WHP classes. The breed in-hand classes were well-filled with Kauri Evenstar and Pilleybailey Pure Fancy taking the two yeld mare classes, and Millyford Mayhem and Trenley Tamara the broodmare classes. Nutschullyng April May, Jetset Flicka and Mallards Wood Imagination were the three filly class winners and Knavesash Gold Dust, Woodrow the Warrior and Furzley Faire Way likewise in the youngstock gelding classes. Sway Mister Darcy won the stallion class and the in-hand championship, with Millyford Mayhem in reserve. Picket Post Polo and Millyford Magician won the two novice ridden classes, Kauri Inspiration won the open ridden and Peronne Novelist the ridden stallions.

The breed’s best result at the Royal International Horse Show was Purewell Poppy Lou taking the amateur riders M&M ridden championship, and also coming second in the Pretty Polly mixed breeds heritage ridden class. Lovelyhill Folklore kept up his momentum in his fabulous season with a second in the BSPS Heritage M&M open ridden NF/Connemara championship and a third in the NPS M&M WHP championship.

At the NPS Summer Championship show, Hurtstock Cornish Amber took the Shearwater Insurance open ridden NF class, the Black Country Saddles NF/Connemara final, the homeproduced M&M open ridden large breeds final and the amateur ridden final championship. Peronne Novelist was another prolific ridden winner, taking the intermediate M&M ridden final and the intermediate M&M ridden championship and the Gold Medal M&M NF/Connemara ridden final and the Gold Medal M&M ridden championship. The Picton NF champion was Vynnes Magical Edition who then went on to reserve in the Picton M&M final championship. In the in-hand breed classes Sway Mister Darcy was champion for a second year in a row with Kauri Evenstar in reserve.

Covid-related travel restrictions in 2021 had forced a move to an online meeting with our Filial Studbook Societies, so we were especially pleased to welcome them to our breed show in 2022 and host a lively and most interesting meeting on the showground. We had a good exchange of views and a mix of live and online meetings means that communication with our European Filial Studbooks is much improved.

New Forest entries at the NPS Great British In-Hand Show were disappointingly low and it is to be hoped that numbers increase next year. Highfox Heaven Sent was the New Forest Supreme, and Sprattsdown Jackpot was champion sport pony.

And so to the Horse of the Year Show for the showing season finale. In the New Forest ridden class, last year’s top two were reversed, with the title going to the blue roan stallion Lovelyhill Folklore (by Applewitch Pure Magic) owned by Penny Sutton and Peter Rowe. In second place was the Forest-bred bay stallion Hilltop Ned and third was Backley Dream Maker making his HOYS debut. Folklore had an excellent show, moving into the WHP ring the next day, where he came second in the M&M not exceeding 143 cm WHP class. Cuffnells Golden Rod was third in the M&M not exceeding 133 cm WHP section. Natalie Pastor was thrilled to win the Search for a Star Working Pony competition on Langorra Ginger Port, by Woodrow Portman. Natalie not only rode her pony, but she bred, backed and produced him totally on her own. The pair then went to Your Horse Live in November for the Search for a Star championships and were crowned the Mountain and Moorland champion.

Foresters continue to excel in a wide range of performance disciplines, with a number of ponies competing in the various British Riding Clubs championships. At the NPS dressage championships, Wellhouse Wizard and Saris Fingers Crossed were the NF preliminary and novice winners respectively. At the NPS Arena Eventing final Jess Faraday and Pilleybailey Centurion won the 90 cm class and were reserve champion. Halle Tucker and Lucky Lane Billy II qualified for the BS Stoneleigh National Championships at both 70 cm and 80 cm, coming away with 10th in the 70 cm. Taggie Wagstaff and Buttslawn Beaufort won the everpopular show jumping Knightwood Challenge at the New Forest Show in which the Foresters are paired up with BS showjumpers. We had two breed representatives at the London International Show, Lovelyhill Folklore and Hilltop Ned, with the latter taking the best of breed.

The repairs to the Beaulieu Road Sale Yard were at long last completed so it was most disappointing that circumstances outside our control meant that we were unable to hold our autumn colt inspection and once again we had to move to an online auction in late November for our main foal sales. An online auction had been held in July for older ponies and some excellent prices were achieved.

The autumn registration season was exceptionally busy and very hard work as we dealt with the

biggest foal crop for a decade. I would like to thank Ann, and Suzanne who came into help, for their sterling work processing piles of registration forms, and Jenny Tillyer who gives up hours of her time checking all the details on every form.

The RBST continues to categorise the New Forest Pony in the amber At Risk category and the Society is grateful for the grant from the Horserace Betting Levy Board. In what has been a satisfying year with some return to normality we are pleased with our achievements and the Society is, as ever, most grateful to our members, owners, and breeders, and our judges and many volunteers for their unswerving support.

Following RBST’s introduction of new methodology for calculating breed status in 2021, the New Forest Pony remained in the amber ‘At Risk’ category in 2022.

2022 BREED SHOW REPORT

Our breed show made a return to the main rings at New Park, with overall entries showing a small increase on 2021, and thankfully we did not have any of the hiccups we experienced in 2021 so the run-up to the show was much smoother.

Marney Dell’s stud stallion champion Peronne Notorious, by Moortown Nobby, emerged victorious in the supreme, the second time he has taken the top award. It was good to see the Forest-run stallions back in the ring with Lucky Lane Pegasus taking the Shobley Cup and Portmore Thunder Cloud winning for a third time the Cranesmoor Cup for having the best foals on the Forest. In the ridden classes, Lucy Booth and Hurtstock Cornish Amber continued their most successful season taking both the owner/rider and ridden championships. Peronne Nero triumphed in the WHP championship, with Furzley Fanfaire in reserve. Our HOYS qualifier was Mallards Wood Micky, by Moortown Nobby, ridden by Molly Simpson, who went on to be placed 5th at HOYS in October.

The youngstock champion was Woodrow the Warrior with the filly champion Nutschullyng April May in reserve. Glenbeech Crystal won the Commoner’s Mare class for a third time in succession, an excellent achievement for a Forest-run mare given that there was a gap year in between. Daniel Drodge’s homebred mare, Pilleybailey Fascination won the mare

championship for the second year running, and their day just got better and better when they picked up the new Centaur Cup for the best in-hand pony over four years owned by a Young Commoner on their way to the Breeder’s Perpetual championship and reserve supreme. Reserve mare champion was the veteran Mallards Wood Goddess enjoying a rare day out in the big rings, taking the overall Forest-bred championship and the Sungold Countess cup for the highest Forest-bred in the supreme championship line-up.

HBLB pays a grant of £5,000 to the Society, to which we are required to add 20% (£1,000) from our own resources to fund the programmes allowable under the HBLB scheme. FUTURITY YEARLING COLTS SCHEME

We were extremely grateful to the Verderers of the New Forest who were able to pay us a grant of £9,500 from their HLS Verderers Grazing Scheme, which enabled us to run another round of the Futurity Yearling Colts scheme. We invited yearling colts to come forward for assessment following the main stallion inspection on 9 April. Twelve colts came before the assessors of which six were selected for the grazing at Nursling kindly made available by Mrs Wendy Gover Fromm and paid for from the grant, which also covers PSSM1 and DNA testing. POINT TO POINT 2022 REPORT

Boxing Day 2022 dawned bright and clear, after a very wet run up to Christmas, as 71 competitors in the traditional New Forest point to point made their way to Ocknell Campsite, having found out this meeting place just the day before on Christmas morning. There followed a busy hour, collecting number bibs, getting ponies measured and weighing in.

The riders were then taken to their starting points, which are only revealed as they arrive there, and they then have just a short time to work out how they will reach the finish, which this year was on Fritham Plain. This is a reminder why this event is regarded as a hugely important part of the heritage of the New Forest, requiring riders to navigate an unknown course across the open Forest. The event is a showpiece for the New Forest pony breed (the races are limited to pure-bred and part-bred New Forest ponies only) as the ponies need a high level of trainability, and a brave attitude to cross a variety of terrains at speed. The junior and veteran riders, who race over one and a half miles, were led to their start by Sam Dovey to near Janesmoor Pond, and course setter John Adams took the riders in the three-mile races to the Forest lawn in front of the Sir Walter Tyrell pub.

The race for the older children aged 14-16 years, and the Novice race were both split owing to large entries, so there were ten races in all. Amy Good won the younger children’s race on Shatterford Golden Lad, with the youngest rider on the day, Milly Stride on Hanmer High Days in second place. The evergreen Buttslawn Beaufort, who has been placed in the top four in his seven races over the years, recorded his third win in one section of the older children’s race, ridden by Taggie Wagstaff. Sonny Lovell, who had won the younger children’s race last year, stepped up to the older children’s race, where he recorded his second successive win, this year on Rowdown Emeli. Sonny’s brother Isaac ran his last children’s race last year and went straight into the Open for his first three-mile race, which he won on Ipersbridge Eclipse. Their mum Erika Dovey then recorded her third successive win in the Ladies race on the first-cross pony Nutschullying Bewitched. Becky Dunn on Sandhole Brandy Snap and Chloe Hughes on Lovelyhill Gentle Touch won the two sections of the Novice race.

Special mention must be made of the outstanding achievements of rider Anita Smith and the pony she bred Janesmoor Jasper Conran. This year, Anita rode Shatterford Thriller, having his first run, to a win in the Veterans race. Anita is the outstanding rider of the 21st century – since 2003 she has had 14 wins, including five on Obershade Top Gun Terry, two seconds, and one third, and she has won her last eight successive races since 2014 (there was no event in 2020). Janesmoor Jasper Conran remains unbeaten in eight point to points. He won his first and only novice race under a different rider, and then Anita rode him to his six victories in the Open. This year he was switched to the Young Commoners, in which he was ridden by Anita’s niece Amy Howells, to record his 8th win. Even more remarkable is that it is not clear how much, if any, vision Jasper Conran has in one eye.

We are all indebted to the Point to Point Committee headed by James Young and Trudy Nineham for their organising skills and determination to run a successful event given the many restrictions imposed by Natural England and Forestry England. It looks as though the FE restrictions on vehicles at the finish actually leads to more people being spread out over the course. A team of nearly 80 volunteers is required to run the event and thanks go to each and every one of them for the part they play. The list is long – entries secretary, stewards panel, starters and mounted stewards, scales, measuring vets and stewards, address system and commentator, race judges, best turned out judge, car parking crew and doctor. Pennyfarthing Homes loyally continue with their headline sponsorship for which we are eternally grateful. Other sponsors

2022 ANNUAL PONY PERFORMANCE COMPETITION REPORT

We received a few more entries than in 2021 as shows and events returned to normal during 2022, and we hope that we will see more in 2023. The breadth of disciplines covered by the eight entries was amazing, yet again demonstrating the versatility of the New Forest pony. The top three ponies were all first-time entries, taking the three novice rosettes.

Diane Hadwen, owner of first-placed HIghfox Skyfall was ‘astounded’ to find out that rider Jo Jack had ridden him into the winner’s spot. He won the Golden Gorse Cup for the overall winner, the Lomondside Trophy for the best owner breeder and the Knightwood Salver for the best stallion – we have not had a stallion overall winner for eight years. Skyfall competed mainly in showing, dressage and WHP, winning the WHP tankard. His sire is Samsons Spy who won the competition (as a gelding) in 2019. He is also a full brother to Highfox Faith who won in 2016, so a true performance-winning family.

In second place, and only a few points behind, was Harwoodhouse Hiccup owned by Penny Jackman and ridden by Gemma Maughan. They won the Dressage Tankard, but also competed in jumping, ODE, arena XC and combined training, and showing.

In third place was the only Forest-bred pony, Mockbeggar Rosey II, therefore taking the Woody Woodpecker Trophy for owner Jenny Tillyer. Rosey is a former riding school pony who needed a change of scenery, and this was certainly provided by rider Sophie Green. She jumped indoors and out, did jump cross and a ODE. During the year she gained sufficient dressage scores to get her Dressage Grade One. She qualified for the BRC Combined Challenge and competed in the final at Aston le Walls; took part in the team eventer challenge at Romsey Show, won numerous utility events, spent a day hunting and finished the year with a run in the point to point. This earnt her the Toby Versatility Tankard.

Sonja Waite rode Silverlea Sweet Dreams into fourth place, winning the Show Jumping Cup and the Merrie Cup for the best owner rider. Sonja writes: ‘I bought Silver and her sister Blue as foals from their breeder Joyce Stainer. I backed Silver as a three-year-old and quietly rode her on. Silver is an incredible ambassador for the breed, she has consistently represented the NFPE club this year in all the teams. Most notably, we qualified for the British Riding Clubs

show jumping national championships, both summer and winter. Silver is very versatile, as well as show jumping, she hunts, drifts, and has competed in the point to point and is even occasionally ridden by my eleven-year-old son.’

Milly Stride was the best junior rider in fifth place on Hanmer High Days. From dressage and show pony, to drifting and racing pony! Daisy takes it all in her stride! Milly was once again the youngest rider competing in the point to point and whilst this was the highlight it was an honour to ride in the junior dressage team for the NFPEC at the National Championships in Lincoln.

In sixth place, Liz Mansbridge reports: ‘I started riding Wayland Elderberry in April 2022 and we’ve had great fun getting to know each other with some excellent results along the way. We competed at county show ridden classes and dressage gaining his NPS dressage final tickets for 2023. I’m looking forward to the 2023 season with Wayland Elderberry.’

JUDGES STUDY DAY AND PROBATIONER JUDGES ASSESSMENT, FORTUNE CENTRE, 6 MARCH 2022

The Judges Committee held an excellent study day, once more in the lovely facilities at the Fortune Centre at Avon Tyrell near Bransgore. Covid restrictions were all but over, but we decided to play it safe and limit the event to our own panel judges with 22 signing the attendance register. Robert Maton, one of the Forest agisters, gave the first presentation with an interesting overview of the Forest-run ponies, looking at the terrain and conditions in which they live, and the importance therefore of good feet, limbs, depth and a strong jawline. He also spoke about how some of the special stallion and breeding schemes have contributed to an improvement in type. Gill Wright then followed, reminding us of the history of the New Forest pony, again stressing the importance of good type throughout the whole breed, with both talks fully illustrated with slides and short videos of good examples of movement.

We then moved to the indoor school where Gill led a practical session with some ridden ponies who compete in various disciplines – one competing at medium and advanced medium dressage, a pony who raced in the Boxing Day point-to-point, another smaller pony who competes mainly in M&M WHP, and finally an older pony who has worked hard as an allround family pony. After viewing them under saddle they were stripped and assessed in-hand for type. This mix of ponies also encouraged some interesting discussion points, one being how much trimming is allowed bearing in mind some of our ponies compete in dressage at a high level and are regularly plaited and are therefore in need of a mane that can been pulled more than some other natives would permit. The morning finished with former breed show supreme champion Hollybrooke Melitta joining us – an example of the type that we should all aspire to.

After all the Covid restrictions of the last two years it was so pleasant to then be able to sit together and chat over a soup and ploughman’s lunch provided by Hel’s Kitchen. In the afternoon, we had three candidates who came forward for the assessment for probationary judging and we were most pleased to be able to appoint two of them as Probationer Judges with varying requirements for completion.

The Society is most grateful to all those who provided ponies, without them we would not be able to run these events which are so important for training and maintaining the breed standard through judging at shows. Thank you to all those who helped with the general organising, and especially to our speakers, for making a most useful and interesting day.

INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF FILIAL STUDBOOK SOCIETIES, HOSTED BY NFPBCS, NEW PARK, BROCKENHURST, SUNDAY 28 AUGUST 2022

The normal biennial meeting due to have taken place in 2021 had to be replaced by a series of Zoom meetings when it became clear that ongoing Covid travel restrictions meant that a live meeting was not possible. However we were all very keen to meet face to face so the Society decided to hold a live meeting in conjunction with the 2022 breed show. Venues for international meetings are always varied, individual and interesting, and have ranged from a castle to schools to national equestrian centres, and to this eclectic list can now be added – a tent.

As soon as the classes had all finished after the stallion and performance show on Saturday 27 August, the Secretary’s tent began its transformation, and I am extremely grateful to Peggy Tillyer and Marion Ingram for their help in moving the tables around and laying the tablecloths. An early start the next morning saw the final touches being added, with each delegate presented with a Platinum Jubilee rosette and a wooden plaque cleverly made by Patrick Kempe. Fortunately, it was a calm, dry day, just a little overcast, so we didn’t get too hot nor battered by wind or rain beating on the canvas. As the delegates arrived for coffee, New Park was just peaceful and lovely.

We began by standing in memory of our good friend Ole Wienecke from Denmark who will be much missed at our international gatherings for his wise thoughts and contributions. We welcomed delegates from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Finland and we were soon down to a busy day’s work working through the agenda of varied items. The main issue was the myotonia policy, and work continued after the meeting culminating in the revision at year end which appears later in this report. Hel’s Kitchen did us proud with a superb lunch and we are extremely grateful to all those who welcomed our delegates to their studs over the weekend.

THE NORTHERN NEW FOREST PONY SUPPORTERS’ GROUP 2022

The Northern New Forest Pony Supporters Group (NNFPSG) has had a very successful year. The new venue for its show at Camden Equestrian Centre way back in April, proved to be a popular move, with great entries and some quality ponies taking part. Supreme champion, under 138cm champion, in-hand champion and NPS British Isles qualifier, was Diane Hadwen’s, Highfox Heaven Sent, with the reserve sash, Forest-bred championship and ridden championship going to Portmore Corporal, exhibited by Megan Hewitt.

Over the summer members had success at a number of major shows including the Great Yorkshire (which held a solely New Forest ridden class for the first time ever), the RIHS, the New Forest Show, National Pony Society Summer Championships, the New Forest Breed Show, the NPS Great British In-Hand Show and HOYS. Other members were busy competing successfully at BD and BE events and a number clocking up the miles on sponsored rides, in endurance competitions and at riding and pony club events.

Several northern based and northern bred Foresters did very well at HOYS; Lovelyhill Folklore (Vikki Smith), owned by Penny Sutton won the New Forest flat class, with the novice ponies Backley Dream Maker in third (Danielle Hughes) and Highfox Hunky Dory (Gail Whetter), owned by Vicki and Ann Partington ninth. Long-time Northern supporter Kirstie Wright with Furzley to Be Faire, owned and bred by Sandra Kilford, was ninth in the HOYS 143cm WHP, with Folklore so nearly clinching the double, standing second in the same section.

The NNFPSG annual performance competition was hotly contested, with some super versatile ponies taking part, some for the first time. The awards were given out at the Christmas meal, which moved from its traditional South Yorkshire venue of the past seven years or so, to a more central location just off the M62, near Leeds. Over 20 supporters met on 4 December for a carvery and a good catch up and it was lovely to welcome some new breed enthusiasts. We will probably try another venue next year, but in the same locality. The Christmas meal will once again be held on the first Sunday in December, so put the date in your diary and more details will be circulated on our Facebook Group and via email.

It’s become a bit of a tradition to have a couple of juniors who battle it out for the under-18 title in the points competition for a few consecutive years and this is the case presently, with Rebekkah Fisher on her own Denny Flash, again taking the sash and trophy from Mia Sharrocks; the latter taking the prize for the best mini-rider under 14 on the diminutive Highfox Hope. This year’s Newcomer Award went to Michelle Brindle. Michelle, and her pony Wanstead Dark Side of the Moon, have clocked up miles and miles across the Welsh countryside this year. This duo also won the sash for the utility (non-competitive activities) section.

The Novice Pony champion and winner of the jumping category, was Eileen Jack’s up to height gelding Brookswood Royal, ridden by her daughter Jo Jack. The dressage winner was the very talented Forest-bred pony, Blueberry Bryn, with owner Shelley Finlan. This pair are now competing successfully at affiliated advanced medium level and notched up 6 wins from 6 starts this year in BD freestyle qualifiers. The veteran gelding Denny Flash was Forest-bred champion. Winner of the In-Hand section was the five-year-old mare Highfox Heaven Sent and Philippa Hadwen, who have had a super first season together; this pair also stood Reserve Supreme to the stallion Highfox Skyfall, who was Supreme Champion this year, ably piloted by Jo Jack. Skyfall and Jo also took the championship sashes for the ridden and most versatile pony sections. Jo first won the Supreme in the NNFPSG points competition on Skyfall’s sister, Highfox Forever, way back in 2005. Well done to everyone who took part. Northern Colt Inspections

More advance warning, at the requests of members, a northern colt grading - it is hoped that there will be a colt inspection held at Camden on the day of the show. This will be dependent on the number of people wanting to have colts licensed of course. The Breed Society will need a viable number to come forward. NEW FOREST LIVESTOCK SOCIETY REPORT ON 2022 BEAULIEU ROAD SALES

The New Forest Livestock Society thought 2022 would be a clean slate for the sales at Beaulieu Road with relaxed changes in the government regulations around COVID and the arson repair work progressing. However, this was not to be the case. The repair work took longer than expected to complete for the June sale to take place. This sale was replaced by a fourth online sale which, once again, proved to be popular. Contractors worked extremely hard over the summer months with a target of being able to hold the September sale. All things were going to plan until a small number of ‘strangles’ cases being confirmed within the Beaulieu Road vicinity in August. The NFLS made a quick decision to cancel the September sale with the hope things would improve for both the October and December sales. This, however, did not happen with further confirmed cases of ‘strangles’ still within the vicinity and a fifth online sale organised for early December replacing the last two sales of the year.

Both online sales were open to all registered New Forest ponies and part-breds registered with the NFPBCS plus other breeds that had been de-pastured on the open forest by commoners. This again enabled those sellers from across the country, who were eligible to enter, to take part in both sales and an opportunity for buyers, who may not be able to make a sale, the ability to be able to bid on any of the lots. The auctioneers created an easy-to-read online catalogue from their website detailing guidelines on viewing, collection, and transfer of all paperwork for the lots presented for the auction. The online sales were organised in conjunction with the New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society and Southern Counties Auctioneers.

4 July online sale

A good entry of 71 lots were put forward with 53 being fully registered New Forest ponies. Entries in the fully registered New Forest section had a mixture of both ‘Forest Bred’ and stud bred animals from yearlings to older ponies with a good mix of fillies, mares, colts and geldings. Some of the older ponies were already broken to ride. A five-year-old New Forest bay gelding Furzley Vanity Faire by Wayland Cranberry was the highest priced animal on the day at £4550. Prices overall remained consistent with previous online sales.

1 December online sale

By far the biggest entry for all the online sales organised with some 209 lots put forward with 149 being fully registered New Forest ponies. Again, the fully registered New Forest section had a mixture of both ‘Forest Bred’ and stud bred animals with the majority being foals, as expected for the time of year. There were also a small number of youngstock entries including fillies, colts, geldings with some older ponies four years and over. Top price of the day was £2600 going to a four year New Forest bay mare Whiteladies Jessica by Rushmoor Huntley. The current economic climate and the larger number of entries reflected overall prices which were lower than previous sales. Bidding was slow up until the last day where there was a flurry of last minutes bids on many lots.

Microchipping

Unfortunately, it was not possible to hold the microchipping events planned in 2022. Going forward into 2023, the NFLS will be looking to reinstate. Communication will be sent out nearer the time with details.

Sales Dates 2023

Sales dates for 2023 are planned for Thursday 1st June, Thursday 21st September, Thursday 26th October (to include pre-sale foal show) – details nearer the time and Thursday 30th November all at the Beaulieu Road sale yard.

The Committee

During the year, the NFLS has welcomed some new committee members: Sophie Grimes, Jake Moore and Matt Pooley. All Young Commoners and between them they bring new ideas and skills to enhance the committee.

Finally, a huge thank to the NFLS Directors for all their time and effort regarding the reinstatement work which has been no easy task and all the NFLS committee for the support and help throughout the year.

THE NF PONY BREEDERS CELEBRATE DIONIS MACNAIR MBE HANDICAP STAKES, THIRD RACE 6.45 pm, SALISBURY RACECOURSE, SATURDAY 28 MAY 2022

Our sincere thanks go to Wendy Gover Fromm who arranged this event and enabled a wide group of friends to celebrate the wonderful dedication Dionis Macnair has given to our ponies. The 6.45 pm race on Saturday 28 May at Salisbury Racecourse was named in her honour. Dionis judged the best turned out from the runners in the race and greeted the winning owners on the podium.

The racecard carried the following appreciation: ‘Dionis has lived in the New Forest for all her life breeding the renowned Beacon New Forest ponies. Her first pony, bred by Sir Berkeley Pigott, was given to her at the age of 13 and she bred her first foal in 1947. Dionis celebrated her 92nd birthday this year.

Dionis has been a passionate advocate of the New Forest and its precious ponies, dedicating years of service to many organisations, and was awarded her MBE in 2010 for her services to the New Forest. She was the first, and to date, the only female elected Verderer to serve on the Verderers Court. She was elected in 1973 and only retired from the Court in 2020. Whilst she often had forthright views in the Court these were tempered with great common sense. She was Secretary of the New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society for 33 years and served on the Commoners Defence Association, the New Forest Association and the New Forest Committee. In 2006 Dionis published a wonderful book entitled New Forest Ponies, an incredible record of her knowledge.

Dionis also held many roles beyond the Forest. She was a well-regarded pony judge, the Mountain and Moorland pony representative on the National Pony Society and the New Forest pony representative on the BHS Breeds Committee. Dionis also kept a riding school in Burley for many years. Dionis rode in the annual New Forest Point to Point Pony Races and had many runners as an owner, encouraging lots of children to take part over the years on her ponies. Her pony Beacon Bramble won the children’s race in the point to point twice and every one of her descendants who have entered the race have been either first or second – a record she is very proud of.’

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

As a registered charity, the Society has a legal requirement to show that it has an educational programme.

At the end of April James Young and Trudy Nineham hosted a Stewards Training Evening at Ford Farm.

Some modifications were made to the display boards of the Show Unit and the CDA Young Commoners took it out around the Forest on a number of occasions during the summer. Brian and Marion Ingram took it to Open Farm Sunday at Brixeys Farm, Ringwood, and Suzanne Kempe took it to Boldre Fete.

Following some changes to the layout of the Heart of the Forest area at the New Forest Show, the Show Unit was also used to host our usual publicity stand there.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

No special measures were required although Risk Assessments are carried out for all Society events. Specific control measures were added to the Point to Point Safeguarding and Welfare policies as required by Forestry England.

REPRESENTATION ON OTHER BODIES

Jane Murray is Secretary and Executive Committee member of the 826 Equine Studbooks Association. All meetings were held remotely by Zoom during 2022. She is also a member of the Liaison Committee consulting with the Defra Equine ID Team on new passport legislation, following the Public Consultation on Equine Identification, Traceability and Biosecurity, held in early summer 2022.

Jane Murray is a Committee Member of the Central Prefix Register.

PONY OBITUARIES

RODLEASE JUBILATION NFM45/107 (2002), s. Burley Gold Blend, d. Rodlease Minuet. Breeder the late Avril Darnton, owner Suzanne Kempe

Foaled in 2002, the first foal when we took on running the Rodlease Stud, Jubilation was to become my star pony of a lifetime. The comment from our vet Lindy Hever on meeting her at 5 days old was that this foal had the stamp of a performance pony, and Jubilation certainly proved her right.

Her first outing to Fordingbridge resulted in her winning the NF Reserve Championship - as a foal!! She went on to win consistently as a yearling, two-year-old and three-year-old at the Breed show, NF & Hants County, Malvern NPS, Romsey etc before coming out under saddle. Her successes continued under saddle with many wins in the showring, although she was also quite cheeky with too much exuberance bouncing into a wrong canter lead or a beautiful walk to canter transition when she should have been going into trot past the judge.

Although she developed into a very talented jumping pony she made it very clear that she would try that skill in her own time and would not even tolerate walking over poles or popping over tiny logs on a fun ride when we first asked her to leave the ground. However after forgetting that idea for six months we gave her another try just before the breed show and from that point on she never looked back, winning the novice workers that same year at the breed show and going on to qualify for RIHS twice and jumping clear at her first HOYS WHP final. She became known as the queen of the watersplashes as she was one of the few that always jumped them first time - funny that if you saw her dither getting into her stable when the rain had left a wet patch by the door!!

Jubilation gave so much pleasure to Avril, once Avril understood the concept of WHP classes - she would always ask why I had to go in the ring again having already jumped. As friends will remember Avril liked taking rosettes home and very rarely did Jubilation let her down, no matter what discipline she was competing in.

Jumping certainly was Jubilation’s passion and she was a brilliant team pony for NFPEC, jumping consistent double clears both at area level and at the championships, and double clears for the eventing team. She achieved Grade 4 showjumping and a silver elite performance grade with NFPBCS.

Having proved herself as a competition pony she carried on to be a lovely broodmare and bred us four foals and has a licenced grandson in France. Her loss was very sudden and she is much missed but we have so much to thank her for, not least the opportunity to be living in such a beautiful spot due to her amazing start that she gave us taking on the Rodlease Stud all those years ago.

OBITUARIES

The Society records with sadness the passing of:

Brian Thorne , from Lyndhurst, who ran the Rockingham herd.

Eric Francis was born in Wellow and with his wife Maggie lived at Furzley cross-roads, Bramshaw for 40 years. Eric ran a herd of cows on the Forest and bred the Staghill herd of ponies. He owned the Forest-run stallion Royal Oak Ron.

Mrs Wendy Cobden’s foundation mare was Merrie May Rose, and the first foal she bred was Westbury William (by Deeracres Franco) born in 1991, who in 1994 as a three-year-old gelding, became the first gelding youngstock champion to take the breed show supreme championship. Mrs Cobden, from West Meon, then adopted the Meonbury prefix and bred a further seven foals from Merrie May Rose. Two of these were stallions, Meonbury Mr McGregor who went to Sweden, and Meonbury Peter Rabbit who went to the Netherlands.

Malcolm Glasspoo l, from Totton, who enjoyed visiting the Stallion Show over many years.

Peter Whapham , from East Boldre, who with his wife Dr Jo Ivey, ran the Marydore herd of ponies on the Forest.

Mrs Lynn Smith from Chesterfield who was a good friend of the Northern Supporters Group

Rod Bailey from Hythe, who ran the Baileybridge ponies on the Forest.

Margaret Parret t, from Thorney Hill, bred the Coombe ponies with the late Anne Carter.

Miss Barbara Wilso n from Yorkshire was a panel judge for many years.

Jane Hann Parkes ran a few mares on the Forest and was a keen competitor in local events. She raced in the Boxing Day point to point, coming second on Wildest Dreams in the veterans part-bred race in 2017. She tragically died in a riding accident in her new home in Scotland.

Ole Wienecke , a vet by profession, from Denmark, who took a keen interest in the breed from the 1960s, and was heavily involved with the Danish New Forest Society. In 1967 he bought a filly bred in Denmark out of UK-bred parents and she became the foundation mare for the Horsemosen Stud. A good judge he did all he could to retain type in Europe. He was always a wise counsel at the international meetings of filial societies. He judged the supreme championship at the 2019 breed show.

Diana Vear - The Vear family purchased their foundation stallion Silverlea Dougal, and mare, Wootton Moonlight, from Beaulieu Road in 1978 and 1979 respectively and ran the Kilncopse Stud in the Meon valley. Their first foal Kilncopse Total Eclipse was born in 1982. Kilncopse Gold Label and Kilncopse Black Label were their two home-bred resident stallions. Diana was a Council member from the 1990s retiring in 2010, she was then President in 2011.

Keith Samphier - Mr and Mrs Samphier ran the Rowlands Stud in Havant. There were only 12 Rowlands ponies registered, but they have had a long influence on other lines that continues to this day. Rowlands Riverside Melody raced in several point to points in the early 1990s, before retiring as a broodmare at the Trenley stud. Rowlands Russian Princess went to the Wayland stud and is the mother of Wayland Golden Harry. R. Charisma also went to Wayland.

ROY HAWKINS

The most repeated words said about Roy on hearing of his sad passing were reliable and dependable. Helping at drifts, helping at Beaulieu Road, banging in posts and putting up rings at the breed show, Roy could be relied on, always there, always dependable. Roy joined Council in 1972 and retired in 2011.

Roy, Jean and their two daughters lived in Brockenhurst from the 1960s and nearly 120 ponies were registered with the Oakfield prefix. Roy bred the stallion Oakfield Lawrie in 1981 and he ran on the Forest for many years with 105 recorded progeny. Roy always enjoyed hearing about Lawrie’s offspring and the ponies that he had bred, and was always very keen to encourage young riders.

In 2010 his lovely Forest mare Oakfield Lark who runs at Whitefield Moor, was awarded the Verderers Rosebowl for the highest scoring mare in that year’s Forest Mare Grading. The photograph of the presentation of this bowl by Verderer Jeff Kitcher at the Verderers Court featured on the 2022 point-to-point racecard as a lovely memory of Roy. He repeated this feat with his mare Oakfield Daydream in 2012.

At Robert Maton’s President’s Lunch at the 2021 Breed Show a presentation was made to Roy who received the New Forest Trust Diamond Jubilee award, normally made at the New Forest Show which had been cancelled. This well-deserved award recognised Roy’s time, effort and dedication to many Forest and commoning activities over the years.

In early January 2022, Robert Maton needed to call a special drift in the New Park area, and the New Forest Livestock Society took advantage of this opportunity to make a presentation of a thumbstick to Roy, in recognition of his invaluable work for the NFLS and at the Beaulieu Road sales over the years. Two of our retired Society vets, Ralph Ellis and Peter Tunney, had special praise for Roy’s assistance to them at the sales. They said he was always so dependable and dealt with many a tricky customer, enabling the vets to keep up the pace necessary to get all ponies booked in on busy mornings.

In his typically quiet, no-fuss manner, Roy had left instructions that he did not want a public funeral, but on the way to his private family service, the funeral cortege left Brockenhurst village accompanied by Robert Maton in his agister’s Land Rover, and proceeded along Burley Road at walking pace, stopping outside Ford Farm where a large gathering of friends were able to pay their respects to a much-loved Commoner.

ANGELA HARMSWORTH

We were sad to hear that long-time Council member (1964-1991) and President in 1975, Angela Harmsworth had passed away. She wished for no fuss and just a small family funeral. Angela did a huge amount for the breed and the Society and ran the breed show from 1979 to 1985. She understood colour genetics and the cream gene and wrote the first article on blue-eyed creams in the Annual Report way back in 1975. Two of her stallions, Broadlands Blenheim Orange and Broadlands Titanic, both sons of Knightwood Spitfire, carried the cream gene. Broadlands Arithmetic, a son of Titanic and also carrying the cream gene, was a prolific winner ridden by Richard Pritchard.

Angela bred over 50 ponies bearing the Broadlands prefix and she also had great success in the 1990s with Fijal Polonnaise, winning the novice and open ridden championships at the breed show. The last four foals that Angela bred were all out of Polonnaise – Polaris, Polish, Politics and Magic Potion. Polish went over-height but he was very talented and had success as an eventer until he was sadly lost to colic in 2018.

Angela was also a talented artist, painting many of the New Forest stallions in oils, including Luckington Ludo 1993. Diane Hadwen reports ’she did the most beautiful portrait of Fijal Maestro for her gallery of New Forest stallions. We still have the pastel study she did for the painting, she gave it to us when Maestro died’.

STELLA ORAM 1934-2022

Stella was born in Market Lavington, daughter to Len and Edith. Len’s sister Eva married the late Harry Burt from South Weirs, Brockenhurst, so Stella spent some happy times at South Weirs with her cousin young Harry Burt , so her interest in New Forest ponies began at an early age, begging her father to buy her a pony from the local sale. Stella’s real interest in the breed began when her children were born and Harry sent up a filly foal for each of them in the mid1960’s. Both these Weirs fillies went on to be the foundation mares for the Parklands Stud, along with some older mares also sent to Parklands and its good grazing when they could no longer manage on the Forest.

Stella bred her first stallion in 1981, Parklands Double Bee, by Harry Bee of Danehurst out of Bumble Bee of Parklands. She also bred lots more quality ponies by various stallions including Katric Capers, Dewlands Val Doonican, Wayland Cranberry and Farriers Finger Print. She was one of the founder members of the New Forest Pony Enthusiasts Club when it started in 1986 and continued to enjoy being a member.

Stella enjoyed breeding and showing her ponies successfully, mainly shown in the ring by her husband Mark and daughter Helen who showed both in-hand and ridden. Stella’s ponies which she left behind are by Furzley Stockaide and her last purchase the licensed stallion Sway Sky’s The Limit, and they will continue to be bred under the Parklands prefix by Helen alongside her Empire New Forest ponies. Stella passed away on 3 January 2022 and will be sadly missed, a lady who always looked for good movement in her ponies and enjoyed seeing them doing things. Helen Plank

BELINDA, LADY MONTAGU 1932-December 2022

Belinda Crossley grew up around the Cadland Estate and Darkwater near Fawley, a country childhood filled with pony riding. She trained and worked as an artist in London, and in 1959 married Edward, Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and helped to develop the Montagu Motor Museum. However, she always made time for her animals, including her Arab stallion Allah, hunting with the New Forest Buckhounds, and was an active member in the early days of Mopley Riding Club. After she left Lord Montagu, she lived for a while back on the Cadland Estate and then settled at Longdown from where she ran a small herd of Forest ponies under the Beaulieu prefix until the end of her life. She made stables available for agister Terry Jones’ riding ponies and was a great supporter of the Commoners Defence Association publicity stand at the New Forest show, helping with the design and making of the interior and exterior cottage backdrops, and storing them throughout the rest of the year. She also kindly used her embroidery skills in making the hessian tablecloths used on the front of the stand. She coordinated 60 volunteers over two years to produce the 28-foot-long New Forest embroidery which was viewed by HM The Queen when she visited the New Forest in 1979 during the ninth centenary celebrations, and which is on display in the New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst. The series of mugs depicting scenes from the embroidery have become collectors’ items and sit proudly on the shelves of so many in the Forest community. Lady Montagu was always active in Forest life and served as President of the New Forest Association 1983-1995 and then as Patron until 1921 and she greatly enjoyed her year as President of the New Forest Show in 1995.

BREEDING PROGRAMME – CHAPTER 15

MYOTONIA BREEDING POLICY

At the International Meeting held in Ermelo, The Netherlands, 29-30 September 2017, it was agreed that from 1 January 2018:

Compulsory testing of all stallions for the myotonia carrying gene is no longer required;

Stallions and mares that are to be used for breeding that have a parent that carries the myotonia gene should be tested.

All breeding stock descended from Kantje’s Ronaldo that has not been tested previously, should be tested.

Where testing is required in the above circumstances, then the revised 2022 Myotonia Breeding Policy (printed below) applies.

In addition:

Point 6 of the 2013 Myotonia Breeding Policy made it clear that the breeding licence was revoked for any stallion who is found to be a carrier of the myotonia gene. This must apply equally to all deceased stallions and, in accordance with the policy on Assisted Reproduction and Article 21 of the Animal Breeding Regulation (EU) 2016/1012, to any frozen semen of that stallion in storage. From 1 January 2021, no frozen semen can be used where it comes from a stallion, dead or alive, who has had his breeding licence revoked for being a carrier of the myotonia gene, to breed foals who will be registered into the main section of the studbook.

2022 Myotonia Breeding Policy

Aim of the Policy

The Society Council believes that steps should be taken to, at best, eradicate the carrier gene from the studbook, or at least, to isolate it and make it clear where carriers exist to enable responsible breeding to take place.

The original Myotonia breeding policy in place from 2013 was reviewed by the Society in consultation with its veterinary surgeons and with the European filial societies in 2022.

In the light of more scientific and genetic information and knowledge of how Myotonia is inherited, and the steps that have been taken to control the gene over the preceding period since the original policy was implemented, the NFPBCS have updated its Myotonia policy which will take effect from 1 January 2023.

The main elements of change are in points 2,4,5 & 8.

Policy

1. If a stallion or any frozen semen is found to be a carrier of the Myotonia gene subsequent to the implementation of the original Myotonia Policy in 2013, its licence for future breeding will be revoked with immediate effect.

2. All colts tracing back to Kantje’s Ronaldo lineage must be tested clear before any licence, and entry into the main section of the stud book is allowed (unless its sire and dam have already been tested clear). The result is to be entered in the passport and any other breeding documents or Zootechnical Certificates, published by the Society in its annual report, noted in the annual studbook records and an accessible record maintained on-line.

3. If any carriers are found in other registered stock, the result is to be entered in the passport and any other breeding documents or Zootechnical Certificates, published by the Society in its annual report, noted in the annual studbook records and an accessible record maintained on-line.

4. All breeding mares that have lineage tracing back to Kantje’s Ronaldo must be tested , unless both their sire and dam have a clear test result on file. The results of any carriers must be published in accordance with point 2 & 3 above.

5. The progeny of any carriers shall not be registered in the main section of the stud book unless they themselves are tested clear but will remain in the X register.

6. All mare owners are advised to check that the stallion or frozen semen with lineage tracing back to Kantje’s Ronaldo that they intend to use has been tested clear before sending a mare to stud.

7. All imported ponies with lineage tracing back to Kantje’s Ronaldo to be used for breeding in the UK will have to be tested clear of the Myotonia gene before being accepted into the main section of the UK studbook (unless its sire and dam have already been tested clear).

8. The Society strongly recommends that mares that are carriers of the Myotonia gene should not be crossed with a stallion/semen that is also a carrier of the Myotonia gene.

9. Daughter studbooks are asked to keep NFPBCS regularly informed of the steps being taken to deal with the issue in their own countries. The expectation is that they will adhere to this policy as a minimum, but may take action over and above this, depending on the number of carriers within the breeding herd.

The original policy took effect in November 2012 was formally approved by Society Council in June 2013 and was printed in the 2013 annual report. The 2022 review is the first official revision of this policy since its inception.

The Society Council is keeping the situation constantly under review, and may update its policy as required in the future.

Approved by Council to take effect from 1 January 2023.

NEW FOREST PERFORMANCE PONY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION

The aim of this competition is to encourage owners of registered New Forest ponies to take part in a wider range of competitions and activities, wherever they happen to live.

Cups and rosettes to the highest placed ponies in the following categories: Jumping, Dressage, WHP, Most Versatile, Driving Special rosettes to best three novices Cup and rosette to best pony bred on the Forest Cup and rosette to best pony bred by the owner Cup and rosette to the best stallion Prize for best junior rider

Scoring categories: Driving; Jumping – affiliated and unaffiliated; ODE; Combined Training; Hunter Trials; Arena Eventing, Handy Hunter/Handy Pony; Working Pony – BSPS, M&M affiliated; unaffiliated; Dressage – affiliated and unaffiliated; Ridden Showing; New Forest and M&M Ridden Showing; Family/PC Pony; Le Trec; Racing; Endurance; extra points for championships; extra points for competing at county level and breed show; bonus points for other activities eg hunting, pony club camp, long distance rides, etc.

The points table has been revised and updated to more accurately reflect the wide variety of disciplines in which New Forest ponies now compete. It looks a bit mind-blowing, but don’t worry – it’s actually best if you leave the points claimed column blank and we’ll complete it.

Exhibitors must be fully-paid up members of the Society.

All ponies must be registered New Forest ponies, four years or over, correctly transferred to the entrant.

All ponies must be entered in their correct registered name.

The competition runs from 1 January to 31 December in the current year.

Juniors not to have attained their 18th birthday by 1 January in the current year.

PERFORMANCE GRADES 2023 – DRESSAGE AND EVENTING

This applies to both pure-bred and part-bred New Forest ponies

DRESSAGE GRADES can be achieved in two ways:

1. Submission of test sheets – for Dressage Grade One and Grade Two

2. Submission of BD record.

SUBMISSION OF TEST SHEETS FOR DRESSAGE GRADE ONE (PRELIM) AND DRESSAGE GRADE TWO (NOVICE)

1. Submit FOUR original Prelim test sheets, or FOUR original Novice test sheets.

2. The minimum score on each sheet must be 65%.

3. The tests may be any combination of Prelim test numbers or Novice test numbers.

4. The pony must be entered under its full registered New Forest stud book name, and this must be clearly written on the test sheet.

5. The judge must be a BD Listed Judge. Their name should be clearly printed on the sheet so that this can be checked. The judge’s signature must be on the sheet.

6. Any sheets not filled in correctly will not be accepted.

7. Tests may be ridden at any event, provided that it is a BD listed judge, so this could be, for example, an unaffiliated competition, BD affiliated, BD Quest, BD British Native Pony Series, NPS, BRC.

8. Ponies must be four years of age or over and hold a valid NFPBCS passport in the name of the current owner.

9. Send your test sheets with the £10 administration fee per level to the address below. When your sheets have been verified by the Grading and Elite Committee, they will be returned to you with your rosette and sticker for the grading page at the back of the passport.

10. Rolling dates are now being used, so as soon as you have your four sheets send them in.

11. By submitting your test sheets you are expressly agreeing to all the terms and conditions set out above.

DRESSAGE GRADES BY BD COMPETITION RECORD

BD points may be used to grade ponies. Ten BD points are required at each level for grading. Once a pony has achieved 5 points at a higher level, it is assumed to have graded at the lower level. Please submit a printout of your pony’s BD Competition Record and the £10 administration fee, for verification by the Grading and Elite Committee, and award of the rosette.

EVENTING GRADES

Grade 1 is for 5 BE Foundation Points; Grade 2 for 15 FP, Grade 3 for 25 FP, and Grade 4 for 35 FP and above. Applicants are asked to submit a print-out of their BE record and a £10 administration fee. As soon as the record has been verified by the G&E Committee the rosette will be awarded.

TREASURERS REPORT 2022

The accounts show a net loss of £6,641, slightly worse than last year (loss of £2,301).

Subscription receipts (£16,740) are down on last year (£19,013) and members are reminded to ensure that they are paying the correct amounts as chasing ‘top-ups’ is time-consuming for the office staff.

The Honoraria paid to those providing voluntary assistance has been increased to reflect extra help in the office and increased travel expenses.

Education and publicity costs are increased due to the £940 cost of holding the International Conference at the Annual Show.

Office costs are increased due to a rent review and increased heating costs.

On a more positive note, the Society has received a refund of bank charges amounting to £4,000 and will no longer be charged by our bankers due to our charitable status.

This year, we have reviewed the Futurity account (note 19 in the accounts) and report that the balance is an accurate reflection of the amount held for commitments with regard to potential stallions already in the scheme.

Market value of investments is down by £19,500 although the income and gain of sales of investments is slightly up on last year. The Trustees are monitoring our investment policy carefully and hoping to achieve higher capital growth by taking a small reduction in income.

Although this was not the most positive year financially, the Society remains in a strong position to continue to uphold our aims and objectives.

Governing Document

The Society is a charitable company limited by guarantee, incorporated on 18th August 1997 and registered as a charity on 8th October 1997.

The Society was formed under a Memorandum of Association which established the objects and powers of the Charitable Company and is governed under its Articles of Association. Under those Articles, the trustees are elected at the Annual General Meeting and one-third of their number are subject to retirement by rotation at each Annual General Meeting. The trustees may appoint a person who is willing to act to be a trustee to fill a vacancy until the next Annual General Meeting. A trustee who retires at an Annual General Meeting may, if willing to act, be reappointed.

The liability of the members is limited to such contribution as may be required (not exceeding £11) to the Charity's assets if it should be wound up while he or she is a member or within one year after he or she ceases to be a member, for payment of the Charity's debts and liabilities contracted before he or she ceases to be a member, and of the costs, charges and expenses of winding up, and for the adjustment of the rights of the contributories among themselves.

If the Charity is wound up or dissolved and after all its debts and liabilities have been satisfied there remains any property it shall not be paid to or distributed among the members of the Charity, but shall be given or transferred to some other charity or charities having objects similar to the objects of the Charity.

Appointment of Trustees

The President and other elected officers are appointed at the Annual General Meeting. The other Board members are elected for a three year term, one third retiring annually.

Objectives and Activities

The objects for which the Society is established are:

• to encourage the preservation and breeding of the best type of New Forest ponies;

• to undertake to record New Forest ponies and enter them in the New Forest Pony Stud Book;

• to hold two annual shows, one for entered New Forest stallions, and one for the encouragement and improvement of the breed of entered New Forest ponies.

The Charity's main activities are based at its office in Bransgore where one part-time assistant is employed, supported by officers of the Society. Shows are generally held at New Park, Brockenhurst.

Achievements and Performance

The Charity sees its main achievements as the successful recording of New Forest ponies and the promotion and preservation of the breed.

Financial Review

The net outgoing resources for the year amounted to £15,244. This decreases the total reserves at the year end to £284,426 which are unrestricted funds.

Reserves Policy

The trustees consider the reserve requirements are adequately met as the income of the society covered its operating costs so that the reserves were not eroded.

Investment Policy

The trustees policy on investment is designed to continue to generate income to enable the society to continue with its objects without exposing the capital funds to any undue level of risk. Investment decisions are taken in conjunction with stockbrokers' advice.

Responsibilities of the Trustees

Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements that give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Charity at the balance sheet date and of its surplus or deficit for the financial year. In doing so the trustees are required to:

• select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;

• observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP (FRS 102);

• make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

• state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;

• prepare the accounts on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the Charity will continue in operation; and

• fulfill the objects of the Society.

The trustees are responsible for maintaining proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the company and to enable them to ensure the accounts comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Small Company Exemptions

This report has been prepared in accordance with the special provisions of Part 15 of the Companies Act 2006 relating to small companies and was approved by the board on 17th February 2023 and signed on its behalf.

I report on the unaudited financial statements of the society for the year ended 30th November 2022 which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities, the Balance Sheet and related notes.

Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner

The trustees (who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of company law) are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:

• examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;

• to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and

• to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of Independent Examiner's Report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent Examiner's Statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

• (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

• to keep accounting records in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006; and

1. Accounting Policies

Charity Information

The New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society is a charitable company limited by guarantee established under its Memorandum and Articles of Association and registered with the Charity Commission and Companies House in England and Wales. The principal address is Deepslade House, Ringwood Road, Bransgore, Christchurch, Dorset, BH23 8AA.

Basis of Preparation

The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention with the exception of investments which are included at market value and in accordance with the requirements of the Statement of Recommended Practice "Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (SORP 2019), applicable UK accounting standards, the Companies Act 2006 and the Charities Act 2011.

As the company is a charity, the wording of the statutory formats required by the Companies Act 2006 has been appropriately amended to give a true and fair view.

The accounts are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity.

Going concern

The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the charitable company's ability to continue as a going concern.

Fund Accounting

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objects of the Charity.

Incoming Resources

Incoming resources represents the invoiced value of goods and services, less returns and is included when receivable. Annual subscriptions from members are included in income of the year to which they relate. Voluntary income received by way of donations and gifts is included when receivable. Legacies are recognised when there is entitlement, certainty of receipt and the amount can be measured with sufficient reliability. Investment income is included when receivable.

Resources Expended

Resources expended are recognised in the period when the liability is incurred and include attributable VAT which is not recoverable.

• Costs of generating funds are those costs incurred in trading activities that raise funds.

• Charitable expenditure includes costs associated with the staging of shows and functions and includes both direct and support costs relating to the activities.

• Investment management costs include portfolio management fees.

• Governance costs include those primarily associated with constitutional and statutory requirements.

• Support costs include central functions and have been allocated to activity cost categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Tangible Fixed Assets and Depreciation

Fixed assets are capitalised at cost. Depreciation is provided on all tangible fixed assets at rates calculated to write off the cost less estimated residual value over their expected useful lives. The rates generally applicable are:

Investments

Investments held as fixed assets are valued at their market value ruling at the balance sheet date and the gain or loss is taken to the Statement of Financial Activities.

Stock

Stocks are valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Cost is calculated on a First In First Out basis.

Debtors and Creditors Receivable/Payable Within One Year

Debtors and creditors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered.

Financial Instruments

The charity only has financial assets and financial liabilities of a kind that qualify as basic financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value and subsequently measured at their settlement value.

2. Legal Status of the Charity

The Society does not have a share capital as it is a company limited by guarantee, whereby every member undertakes to contribute to the assets of the society, in the event of the company being wound up, an amount not exceeding £11 each, if required.
