As a result of the 2009 amendment to Society Rule 7, 6 Members of the Council are due to retire by rotation and the Council should consist of 18 members.

Miss Dionis Macnair is standing down. Mrs Lucinda Lang has been nominated and seconded. There are no other nominations, no election is necessary.

MINUTES OF THE TWENTY-FOURTH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD REMOTELY AS AN ONLINE WEBINAR BY ‘ZOOM’ FRIDAY 26 MARCH 2021, 7.30 pm

THIS MEETING WAS HELD UNDER THE SPECIAL PROVISIONS IN THE CORPORATE INSOLVENCY AND GOVERNANCE ACT 2020

The Chair of Council Suzanne Kempe opened the meeting. The ‘live panel’ on screen were S Kempe (Chair), S Dovey (Vice-Chair), J Murray (Secretary), K Clarke (Treasurer), H Palmer, D Pitman (Registration Secretary).

Members present: 54 people logged on, but several devices would have had multiple viewers.

The Minutes of the Twenty-Second AGM held in 2019 following the indefinite postponement, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, of the Twenty-Third AGM which was due to take place on 20 March 2020.

H Palmer proposed, and J Williams seconded acceptance of the minutes which had been circulated with the 2020 Annual Report, and taken as read. On the online voting, 4 people appointed the Chair to act as proxy, who voted in favour of all the motions.

23 further people voted in favour, with no votes against, and 1 abstention. The Minutes were approved and will be physically signed at the first Covid-secure opportunity.

There were no Matters Arising from the Minutes.

The 2020 Annual Report and Statement of Accounts.

The Chair of the Council, Mrs S Kempe, gave a brief presentation. 2020 had been a strange year adapting to new methods to run Society business, mainly by adopting new technology. The webinar format of the AGM enabled a welcome to a wider breadth of members who would not otherwise be able to attend a live meeting. It was sad that the breed show and point-to-point could not be held, but the symbolic rainbow on the annual report front cover offered an opportunity to reflect on the year, especially acknowledging those members who had fitted their ponies around their key and frontline work, and for so many others for whom time with their ponies had kept them sane during this strangest of years. The Council had worked hard on updating a number of policies and the Breeding Programme, and these had been published in the Annual Report in lieu of the usual reports of activities. Brexit had over-shadowed much work and it had been pleasing to be awarded Third Country Zootech status by the EU Commission. The International Meeting would have to be hosted online and it would be sad not to welcome visitors to the breed show. She thanked the Council and office staff for all their efforts in the last, very challenging, year.

The Treasurer, Mrs K Clarke, read her report. No questions had been received regarding the Statement of Accounts. J Lowth proposed, and J Young seconded, acceptance of the 2020 Annual Report and Accounts. 24 people voted online in favour with no votes against, and no abstentions.

The Council 2021

The appointments of President and President-Elect had been moved forward owing to the Covid pandemic. The Chair thanked retiring President Pauline Black, for her interim cover during the unusual circumstances of 2020. Mrs Black had sent a message to say that she had had a wonderful surprise earlier in the day with the arrival of a bouquet of flowers, and that her presidency had made her appreciative of how much work goes into keeping the Society running.

To confirm Mr Robert Maton as President for 2021 and to confirm Mr John and Mrs Wendy Adams as President Elect for 2022. 24 people voted online in favour of appointing Robert Maton as the president for 2021 and John & Wendy Adams as president elect for 2022, with no votes against, and no abstentions.

Incoming President Robert Maton was welcomed to the live panel on screen. He thanked Pauline Black for her work during her presidency and commented that in a live meeting, at this point he would have done so with a handshake and a thank-you kiss. When invited to accept the presidency

he had been concerned that he might be too young, but on reflection he thought he had enough grey hair and he was having his first Covid vaccination (age related) the following day. He was very proud to be following in the footsteps of his grandfather Don Stephens who had been President in 1980. The President and the Secretary then read out the list of all awards that could not be presented in 2020.

Any Other Business

J Haynes queried whether the breed show could go ahead, following the cancellation of the New Forest Show. The Show Committee were meeting the following week and it was looking hopeful, although some things would necessarily be a little different and contingencies were necessary.

N Dibden had asked about a Charter of Protection for our breed. She was asked to give more information for consideration by the Council.

J Rosset had asked about the Golden Wonder agreement in relation to the breeding programme. It was noted that the agreement had run out on 1 January 2013, but the item will be on the International Meeting agenda.

M Fry asked about plans for a colt inspection in May. The meeting ended at 8.15 pm.

REGISTRATION DATES AND FEES 2022

All breeders should ensure that they have read the document ‘Registration Guidance and Fees for 2022 Foals’ . By signing the Registration Application Form, you are confirming that you have read and understood the document and accept the terms and conditions.

The final date for submission of forms, as set down in the Equine Identification (England) Regulations 2018 is 30 NOVEMBER 2022.

It is very important that all entrants for all Beaulieu Road Sales are registered as early as possible, so that there is sufficient time for the passports to be made up before the sale. This will particularly apply to the September Sale – you will need to start the registration process by early August. Do not delay.

Please register your foals as early as possible, and consider microchipping your stud-bred foals as soon as possible after birth.

REGISTRATION FEES FOR MEMBERS have been increased to £15 for pure/part-bred foals.

ID-only passports have been increased to £20 and are available to members only. These are the first increases in price for a number of years and reflect the increased cost of materials. The plastic cover alone costs £1.56.

COMPULSORY MICROCHIPPING OF ALL EQUINES

The Equine Identification (England) Regulations 2018 required that all horses in England (apart from those covered by the New Forest semi-feral derogation) were microchipped by 1 October 2020 .

It is now expected that at all Society events and competitions, with the exception of the Forest-Fed competition, all ponies will be microchipped. No award will be made to a pony that is not microchipped in accordance with the law.

All entrants to Beaulieu Road Sales must be microchipped. This covers both foals and all other ponies of whatever age, in all the sections. Please ensure that the number is reported to the Society and recorded on the database before the sale.

Please ensure that all older ponies are microchipped before sending in a Transfer of Ownership.

The objects for which the Society is established are: to encourage the preservation and breeding of the best type of New Forest ponies; to undertake to record New Forest ponies and enter them in the New Forest Pony Stud Book; and to hold an annual show for the encouragement and improvement of the breed of New Forest ponies. Having due regard to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance, the Society presents its financial accounts and this report on its activities in 2021, in which it sees its main achievements as the successful recording of New Forest ponies and the promotion and preservation of the breed.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2021

As the pandemic finally seems to be passing, and we have had another year of council meetings via Zoom, I was pleased to be able to see many friends and familiar faces at the breed show in August. My President’s Lunch included a well-deserved presentation to former Council member Mr Roy Hawkins who received the New Forest Trust Diamond Jubilee award for his time, effort and dedication to many Forest and commoning activities over the years.

I would like to thank your Council and the many others that work behind the scenes to keep the Society and all the various events running. In particular, I would like to thank the Point to Point committee who worked tirelessly to once again secure the Boxing Day races, which for many is the highlight of their Christmas.

The last member of my family to be a Society President was my grandfather, the late Don Stephens who was President in 1980. As I enter my 50th year, my grandfather would have been making his centenary, and so it has been a pleasure to continue the family interest and tradition with the Society.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

It’s hard to believe that, as you read this, we are hopefully free of most Covid related restrictions that started two years ago. Life has been very difficult for many, and the pony world has been fortunate, with I’m sure, owners finding many positives from the solace of their ponies. NFPBCS is no exception to this with owners, riders and breeders getting so much joy from their ponies, many making sure that they flew the flag for our breed whenever they were allowed. The popularity of the breed was reflected in the excellent prices achieved at the two online sales, thank you Lucinda Lang and her team.

Through the use of Zoom the Council has been able to continue to meet regularly and may well carry this method forward for some meetings as it enables our Council members from further afield to participate fully. We hosted the International Meeting with our European filial societies virtually but hope to follow this up with a meeting this year linking in with the Breed Show.

It was lovely to meet everybody again at our Annual Show, although sad that the Forest-run stallions were unable to attend. For many of us it was a first time in over a year that we were meeting up!

We were sorry to bid farewell to our registrations secretary Diane due to her moving to Somerset but welcomed Ann to join the office with rather a baptism of fire, being the busiest part of the year for registrations. Ann was introduced to us by Diane and has worked tirelessly despite a steep learning curve. We plead with all our breeders to get your registrations in as early as possible, especially the stud-bred foals to reduce the pressure when the Forest-run paperwork starts to arrive in volumes.

Lastly, we were thrilled that the Point to Point was able to run despite the many challenges running up to the day in meeting all the necessary criteria set by Forestry England and other regulatory bodies. Thank you again to all those involved.

Finally, as Chair of Council I would like to thank all Council members, and co-opted committee members for your hard work covering all aspects of running a successful society and of course Jane for keeping the admin running through a very busy time. Let’s look forward to a ‘straightforward’ 2022!

SOCIETY SECRETARY’S REPORT 2021

Like everyone else, we went into the new year hopeful that 2021 would see a return to something like normality after the extraordinary events of the 2020 pandemic year. Those hopes were soon crushed with the announcement of the third lockdown just a few days into the new year. The first casualty was the Forest Fed Competition which was abandoned for the second year running. The AGM in March was reformulated as an online webinar and achieved the aim of getting the required official business completed. We had taken an early decision not to hold a Study Day and Probationer Judges Assessment as our current probationer judges had not been able to carry out any judging appointments in 2020 and this proved to have been a sensible decision as the lockdown continued into the spring.

Sadly, in early April the New Forest commoning community was delivered a major blow when the iconic Beaulieu Road Sale Yard was targeted by mindless arsonists, and a good part of the roof was severely damaged. Fortunately, we had pushed the date of our colt inspections back to 1 May, so there was time for the site to be secured and we were able to use the adjoining external show ring as usual, although the event took place ‘behind closed doors’ for both safety and Covid reasons. Six of the ten colts forward were approved with Hollybrooke Jupiter, by Wayland Cranberry, the top colt of the day.

We were lucky in being able to use the sale yard, but the damage was so extensive that the live sale due to take place on 1 June had to be abandoned. The online auction held in the late autumn of 2020 had proved successful, so Southern Counties Auctioneers held a second online auction using the Auctionmarts software under the auspices of the Society and the New Forest Livestock Society. 55 lots were offered, 39 were sold, and some astonishing prices were realised. The highest price was achieved by Knavesash Woodlander, a 7-year-old gelding at £5450. The highest youngstock gelding was Ridley Spirit 3yo, £3750, and the highest youngstock filly was Buckland Melody at £3100.

Covd-19 caused a number of shows affiliated to the Society to be cancelled, and some of the County shows were modified to horse shows only, and this will have an effect on our elite scheme scores. Bath and West was one that took place as an equine show only, with the New Forest champion as Hollybrooke Grace (by Hollybrooke Rambler) and Picket Post Pumpkin in reserve. Three Counties was another that ran as an equine show only, where Brock Bronwen (by Hollybrooke Tinker) was New Forest champion, and Sway Mister Darcy in reserve. The young mare Nutschullyng Ophelia (by Furzey Lodge Neil) took the Novice M&M Ridden Championship.

The New Forest Pony Enthusiasts Club was able to hold one of our elite shows at the New Park showground in early July, where Sway Mister Darcy (by Farriers Finger Print) was the Supreme Champion of the Show. The youngstock championship went to Peronne Lullaby (by Leith Limelight), the Forest-bred in-hand champion was More of the Best (by Moortown Nobby), and Sway Supernova (by Peronne Palaver) was the NF owner/breeder champion. Newcopse Tigger was both ridden and Forest-bred ridden champion. Mallards Wood Jackson was the NPS WHP champion.

At the NPS Summer Championship show, Brock Bronwen took the Shearwater Insurance open ridden NF class, and Highfox Skyfall was the Picton NF champion. Sway Mister Darcy was the champion NF pony in hand, with Furzley To Be Faire in reserve. To Be Faire then went to the WHP ring where he was champion in the Novice M&M WHP not exceeding 143 cm, and then overall Novice M&M WHP Champion.

As ever, the Horse of the Year Show served up our showing season finale, where Foresters gained some excellent results. In the New Forest ridden class, the title was taken by the bay Forest-bred stallion Hilltop Ned (by Brookshill Mustang) who had been sold as a foal by breeder Lucinda Lang at the Beaulieu Road Sales for ‘a staggering 20 guineas’. Seven of the dams were Forest-bred, a good indication of how the semi-feral herd is the bedrock of the breed. In second place was Lovelyhill Folklore (he was also fourth in the M&M WHP 143 cm class) and Doorage Olympic Boy was third. At the Royal Cheshire, Peronne The Navigator, a 3-year-old colt, had taken the supreme in-hand championship qualifier and in the Price Family Supreme In-Hand Pony of the Year Championship at HOYS he came in a very creditable fifth place, the highest placed youngster.

The veteran 19-year-old grey pony Fairrose Fantasy came sixth in the plaited 133 cm WHP class. Since 2013 he has won 6 HOYS and 8 RIHS tickets with five different riders, and his current rider Millie Challinor is only in her first year of jumping. Another 19-year-old pony also had an amazing day in the M&M WHP ring. Laura Avery has been trying to win the 143 cm class with the bay stallion Willoway Free Spirit for years – this was their twelfth HOYS ticket – and they not only succeeded but then stood reserve M&M WHP champion.

‘Olympia’ moved to a new venue where our sole breed representative was Lovelyhill Folklore owned by Penny Sutton and Peter Rowe, and produced and ridden by Vikki Smith. He qualified at the BSPS Heritage Championships in October, adding this ticket to his impressive tally for 2021.

We were hoping to host our biennial meeting of Filial Studbook Societies in conjunction with our breed show, but the many Covid-related travel restrictions made this impossible. Instead, we held two online meeting sessions in late July and then an online plenary session in late October. These were successful and we are likely to incorporate online sessions on a regular basis but it does not beat a live meeting and we are hopeful that our Filial Societies can join us in the UK in 2022.

We were very sorry to lose our Registration Secretary Diane Pitman in the autumn, when she and her husband decided to move their sheep smallholding to Somerset, but she did an excellent job training her successor Ann Hall, making for a very smooth transition.

The repairs to the Beaulieu Road Sale Yard were underway by September but it was soon clear that they were going to take longer than anticipated amid a shortage of materials. This meant that the autumn colt inspections had to be cancelled and hopes were dashed of holding at least one live sale later in the autumn. The market had been lively for the last eighteen months, especially with our smallest foal crop for some years, and the 136 lots achieved excellent prices.

The RBST changed the way they categorise breeds on their Watchlist and the New Forest Pony is now in the amber At Risk category, and the Society is grateful for the grant from the Horserace Betting Levy Board. In what has been another challenging year we are pleased that we have been able to achieve as much as we have, and the Society takes this opportunity to thank our members, owners, and breeders, and our judges and many volunteers for their unswerving support as we look forward once again to a return to a normal year. HORSERACE BETTING LEVY BOARD GRANT

The Society acknowledges the support of the HBLB through the payment of a grant of £5,000 in 2021-22 in recognition of the breed’s At Risk status as a Rare Breed.

RARE BREED STATUS

In 2021 the Rare Breeds Survival Trust began using new methodology for calculating breed status on the Watchlist. In the future, the RBST Watchlist will recognise the importance of having suitable numbers of males to contribute to a breeding programme and will no longer concentrate purely on the estimated number of breeding females. To accurately determine a breed’s conservation status both males and females and the degree of inbreeding will now be taken into account. The equine breed currently in the strongest position on the RBST Watchlist is the New Forest Pony, although the breed is still categorised as At Risk in their new categorisation.

ONLINE STUD BOOK

Access to the online stud book is free of charge to members and as such is a valuable benefit of membership. You need your membership number and a password which consists of four lower case letters. If you have misplaced your access details, phone or email the office.

2021 BREED SHOW REPORT

When a lot of other shows were cancelling for the second year running, we were able to go ahead with the Breed Show, but it was not without its challenges.

The New Forest County Show was cancelled and immediately after the NFPEC show New Park was turned into a giant campsite and so the viability of our breed show was in some doubt. We were offered the ‘back field’ by the show society but had to wait until 19 July to get Covid clearance from our district council, which left us six weeks to organise the show on what was essentially a new venue. The flu vaccination rule caused some problems which were eventually resolved. Then one of the Forest-run stallions (who all live together in a big herd) showed signs of viral illness when he was taken home for preparation, so the sad decision was made to cancel their classes. After all this, there were only a few minor hiccups, and the show was most enjoyable although the second day was unexpectedly chilly and caught many people unawares.

Sway Mister Darcy topped off an excellent season by taking the stud stallion championship on his way to the Supreme Championship, with Furzley Colonnaide, the WHP champion, in reserve, and Furzley Game Faire taking the breeders championship. The ridden champion was Woodrow Invictus, with the novice ridden champion Doorage Forget-Me-Not in reserve. Doorage Olympic Boy was the breed show HOYS qualifier. Woodrow The Warrior and Furzley Faire Way were both the gelding youngstock and overall gelding champion and reserve. Bedeselea Goodyera and Mallards Wood Imagination topped the fillies, and then repeated this in the youngstock championship. The filly foal Wayland Mayberry was foal champion. The mare champion and reserve were both yeld mares, Pilleybailey Fascination and Hollybrooke Melitta. Glenbeech Crystal was Forest-bred champion with Vynnes Spring Time in reserve. Two new cups were awarded in the supreme line-up – Sway Mister Darcy took the Marie Large Memorial Trophy as the highest-placed stud-bred pony, and Glenbeech Crystal was awarded the Sungold Countess Cup as the highest-placed Forest-bred pony.

HORSERACE BETTING LEVY BOARD GRANT

HBLB issued a press release in June 2021 setting out how non-thoroughbred rare breed societies will benefit from funding from the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) in 2021, with grants awarded in accordance with HBLB’s statutory objective for “the improvement of breeds of horses”. As well as the significant investment made in the interests of the thoroughbred, for many decades HBLB has sought to protect and enhance specified British rare breeds via grants to societies to support their pure breeding programmes. The range of breed societies assisted has varied from time to time, and HBLB now takes advice from the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) on which native British breeds on the RBST Watchlist are most in need of help. The HBLB grants are used to support breed improvement programmes. This can include premium payments to encourage pure breeding of quality bloodlines, genetic analysis, gene banking, DNA testing, registration subsidy, licensing fees, stallion fertility testing, artificial insemination schemes, maintenance of the breed stud book, support for breed shows and show judge training. The individual societies are required to add 20% from their own resources to fund their programmes. In addition, HBLB backs the annual Rare Breeds Heritage Show, now being managed by the RBST.

As in previous years, the Society has used the HBLB grant to support the semi-feral herds and reward quality breeding of semi-feral ponies by allocating it to the Forest Stallion Premiums and Forest Fed Premiums, although unfortunately the latter could not be awarded this year.

POINT TO POINT 2021 REPORT

The planning of the 2021 point to point was very frustrating for the organising committee, with a considerable amount of uncertainty as to whether it could ahead that was not resolved until just a few weeks before Boxing Day. Consultations and dialogue with Forestry England and Natural England had been ongoing for over a year, the Habitats Regulation Assessment had been completed and complied with, but FE did not grant a licence until mid-December. Vehicle passes were limited to 250, so with two per competitor, plus officials, very few were available for public distribution. It had been thought that this would lead to a smaller crowd, but an estimated 500-600 turned out and braved the wind and rain, with many of them walking from the car parks at Wilverley, to the finish near Markway. Fortunately, the rain cleared up throughout the morning, and the event was most successful.

The meeting place was at Bolderford Bridge with the start for the short races at the base of Holm Hill, where the starter was Sam Dovey. Course setter John Adams led the three-milers to their start at Poundhill near the bridge at Queen’s Meadow. There were 77 entries across 9 races.

Deepmoor Golden Virginia ridden by Bob Mansbridge had raced previously in the Colthunters race five times but recorded their first win in the shorter Veterans part-bred race. In the Heavyweight race, Mark Adams and Woottonheath Herbie has now raced five times for five wins. In the Open New Forest race, full siblings Janesmoor Jasper Conran and Janesmoor Paco Rabanne were first and second, ridden by Anita Smith and Andrew Luker respectively. Jasper Conran has raced seven times for seven wins, firstly in the novice in 2013, then six times in the Open from 2014-2021.

Various members of the Dovey family were racing in red colours in memory of Eric Dovey who passed away in the autumn, and was renowned for his racing ponies under the Yewtree prefix, many of them from the Slipper line. Eric last raced in 2018 when he won the Veterans race on Warren Trail Layer, and the pony this year was ridden to victory by Eric’s grandson Sonny Lovell in the younger children’s race. This was the pony’s third win, each in a different race, 2015 – 14-16, 2018 – Veterans, 2021 – 10-13. He was 2nd over 3 miles in the Open in 2019. Three more of Eric’s grandchildren were also placed in their races, Honor Humble riding Lovelyhill Final Settlement was second, and Isaac Lovell on Rowdown Emeli was sixth in the older children’s race (won by Rowan Cranton on Oakwood Jester), and Hugh Humble was sixth in the younger children’s race. Eric’s daughter Erika Dovey won the Ladies race on Nutschullyng Bewitched for the second time running, and having come third in 2018, won the President’s Cup for the best First Cross for a third time in succession.

Special thanks must be recorded to James Young and Trudy Nineham who headed the organising committee and a large team of 80 people who officiated at the event in various ways. This includes the car parking crew, race judges, entries secretary, starters and mounted stewards, measuring stewards and the vets from Seadown Equine, stewards panel, best turned out judge, scales, doctor, address system and commentator. Jaybeee Safety gave additional advice on safeguarding and H&S in order to comply with licence requirements. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR RACE PONY By Young Commoner Honor Humble

Hi I am Honor, I’m 15 and I ride a New Forest Pony called Lovelyhill Final Settlement (Finn) who my mum bred. He is by Applewitch Pure Magic out of Yewtree On-High. Finn is 14 hands and although I’m really tall 5’10, he is a tank of a pony and carries me all day. In the past I’ve competed in dressage and a little showing which he did really well in (his big brother Lovelyhill Folklore went to HOYS and Olympia this year so Finn has big shoes to fill).

This winter I set myself the challenge of competing in the New Forest Boxing Day Point to Point. It would be Finn’s first attempt and I wasn’t sure how he would get on. I spent the winter trail hunting with various packs and often I am the only person on a pony but Finn takes on the biggest fences and has jumped everything I have asked of him even gates, rails and hedges. He just loves it. He is often admired by other riders because of his lovely roan colour (blue roan is my favourite colour!) Because he has such a thick native mane it takes me over an hour to plait him but I always want him looking smart and I take great pride in his turnout.

It takes a great deal of work and commitment to get a pony fit for the point to point. My brother Hugh and I went out in the dark with head torches after school to ride out and build up our ponies’ fitness. We are lucky enough to live in the New Forest so the ponies are used to the terrain and have run out on the Forest as youngsters.

After a very dry autumn this December has been really wet and Boxing Day was terrible weather. We rode out in the area Mum thought the finish might be on Christmas Eve and I am so glad we did as she picked the right place which was up a long hill to the finish line. When the starter of the race said we could go I was determined to go for it. The going was really heavy and we had to go over a slippery bridge, through clay and avoid holes. Finn loved it I was up in the top 3 and he just galloped and galloped. I think the hunting this winter really helped his fitness and I just kicked on. My friend Rowan Cranton was in front of me in the leading pack. Finn steamed on and had lots of running, finishing second and really strong. I was so proud of him and myself and knew my Grandad who recently died and who had bred Finn’s dam would be smiling down at us. My brother and I rode in Grandad’s colours of red and black in tribute to him.

Finn and I are hoping to do some more racing in 2022 and I am planning to race him on a proper racecourse at Larkhill, Salisbury in the New Forest Hounds Point to Point charity race – I cannot wait I just need to keep him nice and fit. Finn is such a special pony and loves to be busy doing a job.

2021 ANNUAL PONY PERFORMANCE COMPETITION AND PART-BRED COMPETITION

Not surprisingly, only a few entries were received, as quite understandably, many people were not out competing much, with the continuing interruptions and uncertainties from the Covid19 pandemic. Many shows and other equestrian events were cancelled, making it difficult for riders to plan a competition campaign, but for our 2021 winner that certainly did not apply. She began competing in June and can have had hardly time to draw breath for the rest of the year. This is 13-year-old Erin Dovey, who competed on her parents’ home-bred pony Moneyhills Pageant. They did quite a bit of jumping, and Erin was a member of the New Forest Pony Enthusiasts Club junior team that won the 80cm competition at the British Riding Clubs National Championships, with Erin coming 6th as an individual from 80 competitors. They also competed in BRC, PC and affiliated dressage and also some hunter trials and eventer trials.

Another Forest-based pony competing for the first time in this competition was Brock Braithwaite, owned by Trudy Nineham and James Young, who came in second place. He competed mainly in WHP classes, and wins the WHP Tankard, but also did an eventer trial and a BRC one day event.

Wendy Howes from Northumberland has been a stalwart entrant in this competition for a few years now, wining the Forest-bred Woody Woodpecker Trophy on Rushmoor Rough and Tumble for her achievements in BD medium dressage.

Another pony competed by a junior rider was the Forest-bred Fernyknap Beechnut, ridden by Daphne Laird from Kent. Members of West Kent Meopham Pony Club, they competed at individual and team showjumping, dressage, and did two Pony Club one day events and an eventer challenge. They also competed in the 80cm showjumping championship final of the Sunshine Tour at Hickstead.

Amelia Hicks from Wiltshire has entered before on Willoway Lion King, and they made the best of a truncated season by competing in Avon Vale Pony Club arena eventing. They also competed at the NSEA national championships at Keysoe in both area eventing and showjumping teams.

Rowdown Union Jack, owned and ridden by Louise England, was the only entrant in the PartBred competition, having done a mixture of WHP, showing and showjumping, where they qualified for the senior 80cm championship at the Hickstead Sunshine Tour. They rode on a number of the autumn Forest drifts and went drag hunting with the South Downs Bloodhounds. Their year culminated in a second place in the Ladies Race in the Boxing Day Point to Point.

With the lifting of all the Covid-19 restrictions in the spring of 2022, we can hope for a return to normal levels of competition, and we look forward to receiving many more entries for the 2022 competition. All details are on a separate page.

INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF FILIAL STUDBOOK SOCIETIES, HOSTED BY NFPBCS, BY ZOOM, JULY 2021

We had made a few provisional arrangements to host a live International Meeting based around the breed show, but very early on in the year it became apparent that the ongoing Covid-19 travel restrictions meant that this would not be possible. As we had all gained so much experience of using Zoom over the preceding year, it was a straightforward decision to use that method to hold the meeting. We knew that it would be a very different experience for all of us, and while we were very much looking forward to welcoming representatives from all our European filial societies, the pandemic had other ideas. We felt that we had to make the best of this new opportunity, knowing that it might become a regular feature, although it will never beat meeting together. We met through our screens in two sessions at the end of July and worked our way through two busy agendas.

In Meeting One, the main topics covered were:

• Delegates from UK, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway and Sweden each gave a brief overview of their current breed situation. The common comment was that the current market is very lively with high demand, which is somewhat surprising given the Covid pandemic. Breeding numbers have generally declined.

• • Geographical Territory of each filial society and extensions of breeding programme. This issue came to light in the Brexit negotiations.

• Third Country Listing of EU filial societies in the UK.

• PSSM1 status reports from each country and a general discussion on the PSSM1 Policy. The PSSM1 Breeding Policy (Chapter 16 in the Breeding Programme) was accepted by the meeting.

In Meeting Two the main topics covered were:

• The Breeding Programme, and each filial society was asked to send a copy of their own breeding programme to NFPBCS by end 2021.

• Stallion Licensing, with an emphasis on type.

• Golden Wonder – status of the 2012 statement.

• Myotonia Breeding Policy.

In late October a Plenary Meeting was held to confirm the Minutes. The Golden Wonder Statement was approved as Chapter 17 of the Breeding Programme (printed elsewhere in this Annual Report). Further discussion arose on the continued use of the myotonia carrier Kantje’s Ronaldo for breeding (via assisted reproduction).

In December a Zoom meeting was held with representatives of the Dutch Board (with some other filial societies as observers) to continue discussions on the myotonia policy.

Of which 165 are from the affected stallion lines (as above), and of these 63 are positive. 62 have tested n/P1, and only one pony has tested P1/P1.

Many of the clear mares have progeny which are now ‘clear by parentage’, ie, they do not need testing as both parents have tested clear.

62 foals born in 2021 (13% of the foal crop) were identified as being ‘clear by parentage’.

Positive mare line

Following information from Sweden, where Buckland Kelly tested n/P1, a line going back to the mare Skylark of Sowley was identified in 2020. 10 ponies have been tested, with 2 positive.

NEW FOREST FIRST FOR RBST GENE BANK

We are very pleased to report that the RBST’s native equine Gene Bank has received its first New Forest stallion, Knavesash Talisman. The 7-year-old was bred by Kate Robb and is owned by Julie Fisher of Chesterfield. Julie had decided to take advantage of an offer from Stallion AI Services for collections from native ponies and kindly agreed to let him stay on for Gene Bank collection.

Knavesash Talisman’s bloodlines on the dam side are very ‘old’, his dam-sire is Penny Farthing who goes back to Broomy Slipon-Telegraph Rocketer; and his dam-dam line goes back to Typhoon of Blackheath-Wychwood Tornado-Tinkerbell, and Moorbridge Silver-Moorbridge Victory. Talisman’s sire is Applewitch Pure Magic, so on the sire side this is the very widelyused Peveril Peter Piper line which goes back to Burton Starlight, Brookside Spitfire and Goodenough, and on the dam side to Slipper.

Before buying Knavesash Talisman, Julie had had experience of Foresters, firstly with her sister’s unregistered pony and then from a livery yard, where she was asked to break in a mare and a colt. Unfortunately, a fractured pedal bone put an end to Julie’s showing hopes for the colt, and feeling a bit down, she started to look on social media for a replacement. She was delighted when Kate agreed to sell her Talisman as a weaned foal, and he enjoyed a most successful showing season as a yearling. Following his stallion licensing, Julie used him for breeding purposes, but he was badly kicked by a mare landing her with a hefty vet’s bill. Then Covid hit and there were no shows, so when Julie saw the offer from Stallion AI Services she decided to invest in him, and while he was there RBST offered additional funding to the Gene Bank collection.

The Society is also working with West Kington Stud who hold some semen taken in 2002 in a project organised by the New Forest Pony Publicity Group. The aim is to transfer that semen which reaches the correct criteria to the RBST Gene Bank as well. There is also an ongoing project working with the Verderers in 2022 to take semen from the Forest-run Stallions, which will also be added to the Gene Bank.

THE NORTHERN NEW FOREST PONY SUPPORTERS’ GROUP 2021

It was lovely to get quite a few new competitors taking part in this year’s northern points competition. Having enjoyed a successful and busy season, our Overall Champion was Furzley To Be Faire, who also won the Versatility cup, and the Championship ribbons for the in-hand and WHP sections. He was shown by Kirstie Wright, with her other ride Furzley Colonnaide in Reserve.

The Forest-bred Champion was Blueberry Bryn owned by Shelley Finlan, who also stood champion of the dressage section; reserve Forest-bred went to Rebekkah Fisher and Denny Flash. Novice champion and also champion of the ridden section was Highfox Skyfall who was competed very lightly, but successfully by Jo Jack, in this his debut season. Reserve novice was Whiteladies Question Time and Sally Strachan, who has just taken over the ride on Quest.

Winner this year of the newcomer award (aimed at those just starting out competing their Foresters) was Karen Corr and her own Furzley Vanity Faire; the pair enjoyed success at a number of shows. The junior champion was Mia Sharrock, who started her showing career off the lead rein this season on the diminutive Highfox Hope. Reserve went to Rebekkah Fisher with Denny Flash. It is really super to see some young Supporters coming through and enjoying their ponies.

Sadly, there were no part-bred and limited youngstock entries this year; hopefully these sections will be better supported next time around. Well done everyone who took part.

The Supporters’ Annual Show back in May seems a long time ago now, but culminated in another successful day for ‘Team Furzley’, Kirstie Wright and her niece Annie Aston-Wright who took both in the hand and ridden championships with Furzley To Be Faire and Furzley Colonnaide respectively. Entries were down on previous years and it became obvious that the current venue at Solihull is too far south for some of our more northerly members. For 2022, we are going to have a ring at NPS Area 4's spring show at Camden Equestrian Centre on 24 April.

BREED SOCIETY SPECIAL ROSETTES AWARDED AT AFFILIATED SHOWS, 2021

In the summer of 2019, the Council reviewed show affiliation to the Society for 2020 shows, and substantially increased its offer to four rosettes for a single affiliation fee. Office procedures were completely overhauled, with a new form designed and a new recording form set up which makes auditing the number of rosettes sent out much easier. Several new shows were approached, and take-up was most pleasing. Then, of course, lockdown hit, and most shows were cancelled. Affiliation fees, in nearly all cases were rolled over to 2021, but several shows were not able to run in 2021 either. Some rosette winners are listed below, and we hope that 2022 will see a full return to showing, enabling our competitors to win our lovely affiliated rosettes once more.

NEW FOREST LIVESTOCK SOCIETY REPORTS OF ONLINE AUCTIONS

Beaulieu Road Online Auction June 2021

With the uncertainty earlier in the year due to COVID and government regulations, it was decided the Spring auction would be online following in the footsteps of the first successful online auction in December 2020. This auction was organised in conjunction with the New Forest Livestock Society, NFPBCS and Southern Counties Auctioneers. The auction was open to all registered New Forest ponies and part-breds registered with NFPBCS, plus other breeds that had been depastured on the open Forest by commoners. This enabled those sellers from across the country, who were eligible to enter, to take part in this online auction and an opportunity for buyers, who may not be able to make a sale, the ability to be able to bid on any of the lots. The auctioneers created an easy-to-read online catalogue from their website detailing guidelines on viewing, collection, and transfer of all paperwork for the lots presented for the auction.

A good entry of 55 lots were put forward with 40 being fully registered New Forest ponies varying from youngstock to older animals which included a good entry of New Forest fillies and mares which are much sought after. Buyers had a good selection to choose from. The top four animals sold during this spring online auction were: Knavesash Woodlander, by Brock Buttons, a 7-year-old gelding owned by Nicola Denness reached £5450, which is a record price for the Beaulieu Road sales. This strong bay gelding, already backed to ride caught the eye of many potential buyers throughout the bidding process. Beverley Molter’s bay 3-year-old gelding Ridley Spirit, by Rushmoor Dalesman did not disappoint either, fetching £3750. A strong bay gelding who has already started his education into his next stage of his career, Beverley who has bought foals previously from the Beaulieu Road sales to bring on and educate, said he ‘caught’ her eye that day as a foal and was now, ‘very pleased to be supporting the online event with him’ to start his next stage of his life. Buckland Melody, a 2-year-old filly by Buckland Skyline and owned by Kate Adams attracted much interest and sold for £3100. Hollyhatch Highlander is a homebred 2-year-old gelding bred by Kate Ingram, out of a registered New Forest mare Willoway Annabelle by Caradon Cracker, a Thoroughbred stallion sold for £3000.

Prices during this auction reflected the quality and demand for the New Forest Pony and what they have to offer. This breed has an amenable temperament, versatility to multiple disciplines, hardiness, strength, and sure-footedness.

Beaulieu Road Online Auction – ending Thursday 25th November 2021

The New Forest Livestock Society sadly had to cancel the two sales planned for October and December due to the ongoing sale yard reinstatement work from a fire in April. These two sales were replaced by a third online auction run in conjunction with Southern Counties Auctioneers and The New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society. The auction was open to all registered New Forest ponies and part-breds registered with the NFPBCS plus other breeds that had been de-pastured on the open forest by commoners. This enabled those sellers from across the country, who were eligible to enter, to take part in this online auction and an opportunity for buyers, who may not be able to make a sale, the ability to be able to bid on any of the lots.

A good entry of 135 lots were put forward with 90 being fully registered New Forest ponies. Entries in the fully registered New Forest section varied from both Forest-Bred and stud foals; a strong selection of yearlings / two and three old youngsters to several older animals. It was a good mix of fillies, colts and geldings, buyers had a good selection to choose from.

The top prices for the fully registered New Forest section included:

Sunnyside Skylark by Lucky Lane Rollo, owned and bred by Katie Luker reached £3150 - a strong Forest-Bred six-year-old grey gelding broken to ride.

Hollyhatch Duchess II, Kate Ingram’s home-bred bay three-year-old filly by Hollyhatch Huntsman fetched £2100.

Lovelyhill Peaky Blinder, a grey three-year-old gelding by Willoway Dancing Gold sold by Roxanna Thomas in Wales at £3000.

Longslade Juniper Berry, a black two-year-old gelding by Walhampton Scholars Farewell sold by Samantha Reece for £3000.

Rushmoor Huntsman, a bay two-year-old by Rushmoor Dalesman sold by Martine Harding for £3000.

Sway Saint Tropez, Luke Blomfield’s home-bred bay yearling filly by Sway Supernova £2500. Buckherd Rocking Around by Lovelyhill Hendrix, black yearling gelding, bred by Diana Kitcher, £1150.

Sabina’s Nightingale, Sabine Andree-Parsons home-bred bay filly foal by Sabina’s Gold Sovereign, topped the foals at £1500.

Rowhill River Dance by Fidleywood Falconer, Alan Ingram’s buckskin Forest-Bred colt was to the top colt foal reaching £1050.

The proceeds from the sale of Rowhill Patience (£580), owned and bred by Alan Ingram, have been donated to the charity 'Naomi’s House', a generous donation to a very good cause.

The online auction proved to be popular with prices reflecting the quality and demand for the New Forest Pony and what they have to offer. This breed has an amenable temperament, versatility to multiple disciplines, hardiness, strength, and sure-footedness. Dates for the planned live sales at Beaulieu Road are published further in this report.

THE GRASSROOTS DATABASE JOURNEY

Grassroots has provided software to breed societies for over 20 years and has been supplier to NFPBCS since 2008. 2021 was a particularly busy year, with the roll out of the first iteration of the new Grassroots Online Registry, to replace the old PedeWeb. This was the culmination of three years of work and the first visible part of the journey. There are three people working full time on the software developments and there are new iterations of the system on the way.

Generally, the new system has been very well received. There have been almost 200,000 separate visits to the new system, over 125,000 ‘Manage My Animal’ transactions and 42,000 births recorded in the past six months (these are all non-equine). Grassroots has tried to react quickly to any problems as they were identified and incorporate ideas into the next iteration which is already well on the way.

Some members have asked ‘what is it all about’ and so by way of explanation:

The old system had to change because it was almost 20 years old and could not incorporate many modern features. It was never designed for use on a phone.

Grassroots has created a new database, which is going to eventually provide us all with many new tools and features, and in 2021 they spent a great deal of time tidying the data for each breed in turn and migrating them into the new database. Almost all the breeds have now been migrated, a total of nearly 4 million animal records!

In order for farmers/equine breeders to access this new database, Grassroots Online was written as an initial replacement for PedeWeb. It needed to work with the existing office system, provide all the tools farmers were used to and incorporate the limitations of the old system and the opportunities for the new.

The next iteration of the Farmers Online system to be rolled out in 2022 will have a number of new features. It will be more interactive, and will work better on a phone, although there will always be limitations of accessing the Online Registry website on a phone, because there is so much data to display and manipulate.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

As a registered charity, the Society has a legal requirement to show that it has an educational programme. The cancellation of the New Forest Show for the second year running meant that we were not able to hold our usual display stand there.

The Secretary has assisted a number of university students with the provision of information about the breed.

In October, at the request of the Young Commoners Group, Jenny Tillyer supported by Jane Murray led a session looking at pony passports, registrations, microchipping, PSSM1 and colour genetics.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

A Covid-specific Risk Assessment was carried out for the May Colt Inspections, special guidance notes written, and all those attending had to complete a Contact Tracing form. Once Covid restrictions were lifted in mid-July, the Breed Show was able to go ahead without the need for any Covid-specific requirements.

Julie Brown of Jaybee Safety gave additional H&S and safeguarding advice needed to secure the licence to run the point to point.

REPRESENTATION ON OTHER BODIES

Jane Murray is Secretary and Executive Committee member of the 826 Equine Studbooks Association. All meetings were held remotely by Zoom during 2021.

PONY OBITUARIES

GREENCOTTAGE AMBASSADOR S38/056 (1995), s. Peveril Peterborough, d. Gosden Prickle, bred and owned by Fiona King

Fiona and everyone at Green Cottage were terribly sad to lose Greencottage Ambassador - our beloved Toby in the summer. At 26, Toby was our first homebred pony to bear the Greencottage prefix, and he was a true ambassador for the breed all his life. He had a long and successful career in the show ring, representing the breed at both the Horse of the Year Show and Olympia, and displayed his jumping talent in working hunter and showjumping classes, and competing in the Knightwood Challenge at the New Forest Show. He was a Performance Tested Stallion, having gained Dressage Grade 1 and Showjumping Grade 3.

He retired from competition for a quieter life schooling and hacking at home and continued his stud duties all his life. He sired a total of 42 offspring, including the stallion Fijal Jupiter, and some excellent part-bred ponies. In 2020 he was awarded the Stallion Progeny Silver Grade. Toby was a true gentleman, a delight to work with, and a pleasure to ride and handle. His legacy lives on in the next generations, but he leaves very big shoes to fill. We will miss him.

The Society records with sadness the passing of:

Eileen Ellis , who with her late husband George Ellis, bred the Canford ponies.

David Plascott of Dibden Purlieu who bred mainly part-bred Arab ponies.

Ann Perry of Brockenhurst, who with her late husband Stan, bred the Oakapple ponies.

Sandra Noble (nee Ralphs) , who rode and competed many ponies throughout her life, memorably Mr Andre (Pony Personality in the 1974 Annual Report) who was given to her for her 21st birthday with whom she won hundreds of rosettes including pony racing and point-topoint. She also bred the Waterford ponies.

Ray Readhead , Commoner from Holbury who bred the Ashdene herd of Forest-run ponies.

Allan Robertson – from Herefordshire, a member of our Judges Panel, who judged the breed regularly over many years. He was a very well respected and highly knowledgeable judge and long-time supporter of the National Pony Society. He bred, owned and showed a number of breeds including Hacks, Riding Ponies, Fells and Welsh.

Reverend Peter Murphy of Lyndhurst and Fordingbridge, who enjoyed the Forest life on his retirement from parish duties, although he continued to officiate at many Forest funerals. He bred the Vicars ponies, and rode on drifts and in the point-to-point.

Barry Allen , steward at the Breed Show for 33 years.

Sheila Napthine , from Hounsdown, from an old commoning family, she bred the Sandhole herd of Forest-run ponies.

Marie Large who with her husband Clifford, founded the Willoway Stud near Wimborne, based around their foundation stallion Peveril Peter Piper, who was foaled in 1979. They registered their first Willoway foal in 1981 and over 270 ponies have carried the Willoway prefix.

ALBERT STRIDE 1926-2021

Bert was born in Woodlands, Netley Marsh in 1926, the youngest of four children, he was brought up by his grandparents at Brook Bushes in Bramshaw, where he recalled the grand meet of the Buckhounds at Fountain Court, home of Sir George Thursby. Bert started work aged 14 in late 1939 for the Home Grown Timber Production Company, helping the war effort in the making of railway sleepers and charcoal for ammunition, and in 1942 was called up and saw active service in France, Belgium and Germany. After the war he joined the Forestry Commission where he was a crawler driver, timber cutter and forest craftsman. He married Vera Penny in 1948 and lived at Pikes Hill until 1954, when they moved to Denny Lodge where they were to live for the rest of their lives. They milked a cow, kept pigs and were active commoners, building up the Pikeshill herd of New Forest Ponies, which he kept until his death. One of Bert’s proudest moments was when his riding horse Tan, won the annual Forest Point to Point Colthunters race three years in succession. Tan won this race six times in all and was second twice, this record has not been equalled to date. He was Vice Chairman of the Commoners Defence Association and was always a staunch defender of common rights, both he and Vera were honoured to have been made life members of the CDA. Albert leaves his daughter Ann, and three sons John, Richard and Raymond, nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren, many of them still involved in commoning. As his funeral cortege took Albert on his final journey from Denny to the cemetery at Lyndhurst, the family were honoured to see

the route lined with commoners, his local Agisters in their uniforms and Forest workers who had all taken the time to pay their respects. It was particularly fitting that the FE staff were stood opposite Matley Inclosure, which Albert and his son Richard had fenced and planted 52 years previously. He was buried with his hoe and Tan’s hoof.

ERIC DOVEY

Well-known farmer, commoner, nature lover, pony breeder and New Forest point-to-point champion Eric Dovey passed away in the autumn at the age of 70, having been a resident of Beaulieu for most of his life. Born in November 1950 at Warren Farm, Bucklers Hard, to parents Hugh and Ann Dovey, Eric was one of eight children, with six brothers and one sister, they later moved to Culverley Farm. He married his first wife Wendy Smith in 1976 and they made their home at Warren Farm, where they welcomed children Kerry, Hugh and Erika. He later married his second wife Denise and had two daughters, Samantha and Kimberley.

Eric was given a grey mare for his 21st birthday by his auntie Margery and continued to breed and keep New Forest ponies for the rest of his life. Around 250 ponies were registered with the Yewtree prefix, and he bred a slew of stallions, Wild Side, Driftwood, Ride-A-Way, Ice Man, Soldier On, Gallipoli, many of them sons and grandsons of Hopalong of Yewtree and Ride-On of Brickworth, with prodigious amounts of Slipper blood, which made their progeny much sought after for their speed in the point-to-point races. Eric rode numerous times himself; the last occasion was in 2018 when he won the Veterans.

In 2006, Eric left the New Forest and moved to Ireland, where he lived for six years, before returning to Peartree Cottage near Beaulieu. Sadly Eric was diagnosed with a brain tumour in February 2020, but fought hard against the illness and continued to breed his beloved ponies and enjoy walks in the Forest. He gifted a pony to each of his grandchildren and was proud when his stallion Brookshill Major II was selected into the Verderers’ Stallion Scheme to run on the Forest. Eight members of his family rode their ponies in the funeral cortege from Culverley Farm to Beaulieu Road, with many Commoners lining the route.

BARRY ALLEN

Barry started his Ring Stewarding 33 years ago in the West Ring collecting ring at the New Forest Show. After his first year it was felt that Barry was far too good to stay there - he took to stewarding like a duck to water, and with the training team he never looked back. As a steward he did many jobs, rosettes, cups, you name it he did it! He was a ‘backroom boy’- he should have been a senior steward - Barry’s answer to that was “No, I stay with the team”. As the years went by he took over the Show Ring to do the M&M HOYS classes. Barry’s job was to check all the mark sheets before going to the office. He had a head for maths and could spot an error a mile off. Barry travelled with me abroad when I was judging, he stewarded with me and everyone loved him. Barry always looked forward to the Breed Show, he did so many jobs and it was one of his favourite shows. He was also treasurer and cup steward for the NFPEC show which we ran for six years. This is just a few things he did for local shows. Thanks my friend I will miss you.

A letter was sent in December 2012 to all our daughter stud books reminding them that as from 1 January 2013 progeny from mares with over 6.25% Golden Wonder blood will no longer be allowed in the main section of the New Forest Stud Book and will not be recognised as pure bred new Forest.

This means that the extension of time of an extra three years given for these special category mares to breed down to the desired level of Golden Wonder, came to an end on 31 December 2012.

NEW FOREST PERFORMANCE PONY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION

The aim of this competition is to encourage owners of registered New Forest ponies to take part in a wider range of competitions and activities, wherever they happen to live.

Cups and rosettes to the highest placed ponies in the following categories: Jumping, Dressage, WHP, Most Versatile, Driving Special rosettes to best three novices Cup and rosette to best pony bred on the Forest Cup and rosette to best pony bred by the owner Cup and rosette to the best stallion Prize for best junior rider

Scoring categories: Driving; Jumping – affiliated and unaffiliated; ODE; Combined Training; Hunter Trials; Handy Hunter/Handy Pony; Working Pony – BSPS, M&M affiliated; unaffiliated; Dressage – affiliated and unaffiliated; Ridden Showing; New Forest and M&M Ridden Showing; Family/PC Pony; Le Trec; Racing; Endurance; extra points for championships; extra points for competing at county level and breed show; bonus points for other activities eg hunting, pony club camp, long distance rides, etc.

The points table has been revised and updated to more accurately reflect the wide variety of disciplines in which New Forest ponies now compete. It looks a bit mind-blowing, but don’t worry – it’s actually best if you leave the points claimed column blank and we’ll complete it.

Exhibitors must be fully-paid up members of the Society.

All ponies must be registered New Forest ponies, four years or over, correctly transferred to the entrant.

All ponies must be entered in their correct registered name. The competition runs from 1 January to 31 December in the current year. Juniors not to have attained their 18th birthday by 1 January in the current year.

PERFORMANCE GRADES 2022 – DRESSAGE AND EVENTING This applies to both pure-bred and part-bred New Forest ponies

DRESSAGE GRADES can be achieved in two ways:

1. Submission of test sheets – for Dressage Grade One and Grade Two

2. Submission of BD record.

SUBMISSION OF TEST SHEETS FOR DRESSAGE GRADE ONE (PRELIM) AND DRESSAGE GRADE TWO (NOVICE)

1. Submit FOUR original Prelim test sheets, or FOUR original Novice test sheets.

2. You must achieve Dressage Grade One first although tests at both levels can be ridden at any time.

3. The minimum score on each sheet must be 65%.

4. The tests may be any combination of Prelim test numbers or Novice test numbers.

5. The pony must be entered under its full registered New Forest stud book name, and this must be clearly written on the test sheet.

6. The judge must be a BD Listed Judge. Their name should be clearly printed on the sheet so that this can be checked. The judge’s signature must be on the sheet.

7. Any sheets not filled in correctly will not be accepted.

8. Tests may be ridden at any event, provided that it is a BD listed judge, so this could be, for example, an unaffiliated competition, BD affiliated, BD Quest, BD British Native Pony Series, NPS, BRC.

9. Ponies must be four years of age or over and hold a valid NFPBCS passport in the name of the current owner.

10. Send your test sheets with the £10 administration fee per level to the address below. When your sheets have been verified by the Grading and Elite Committee, they will be returned to you with your rosette and sticker for the grading page at the back of the passport.

11. Rolling dates are now being used, so as soon as you have your four sheets send them in.

12. By submitting your test sheets you are expressly agreeing to all the terms and conditions set out above.

DRESSAGE GRADES BY BD COMPETITION RECORD

BD points may be used to grade ponies. Ten BD points are required at each level for grading. Once a pony has achieved 5 points at a higher level, it is assumed to have graded at the lower level. Please submit a printout of your pony’s BD Competition Record and the £10 administration fee, for verification by the Grading and Elite Committee, and award of the rosette.

EVENTING GRADES

Grade 1 is for 5 BE Foundation Points; Grade 2 for 15 FP, Grade 3 for 25 FP, and Grade 4 for 35 FP and above. Applicants are asked to submit a print-out of their BE record and a £10 administration fee. As soon as the record has been verified by the G&E Committee the rosette will be awarded.

Laura’s dreams finally came true when 19-year-old stallion Willoway Free Spirit, topped the line-up of the M&M working hunter pony 143cm championship at the 2021 Horse of the Year Show, having qualified at Stoneleigh Horse Show, their first show of the year. Laura has owned the stallion for eight years, and this was their 12th HOYS ticket.

“He was bred by Maria Large of Willoway Stud who sadly passed away this year,” said Laura. “I produced him for a couple of years for her and then she sold him to me. We’ve been trying to get this title for years. Thankfully, the course suited him today – it was a bit more open and free-flowing. It’s just luck of the day when you get here.”

“He hasn’t done a lot this year because he qualified at his first show and then I did Lincoln to give him a run and then Royal International,” she said. “He got really bored over lockdown because I chucked him out with the cows – he was miserable and bored. He hates sitting in the field doing nothing, he loves to be out at his parties and I’d miss him too much. He’s still as cheeky as ever.”

Alongside showing, ‘Spirit’ also events and won the Mitsubishi Motors Cup at Badminton in 2017. “We live on a farm and don’t have a school, so we mostly just hack around the farm and go and borrow a friend’s arena and have a few lessons with eventer Michael Jackson,” explained Laura. “People ask me how I keep him in such good nick, but it’s down to having good conformation. He’s an utter sweetheart and we’ll keep going as long as he’s happy to do so.”

LOXLAND AMAZING GRACE M53/326 (2011) s. Applewitch Pure Magic, d. Sabinas Northern Light, breeder Mr & Mrs J Moxon, owner and rider Emma-Jane Dobson

Loxland Amazing Grace ridden by Emma-Jane Dobson represented Suffolk at the UK Armed Forces Championships at Bury Farm; although the smallest pony competing, she stood 1st and 2nd in the Prelim dressage on day one. On day two, she won the 70cm show jumping, with the only double clear over a tricky course. She then came 4th in the 80cm, with another double clear.

At the end of August at the Forces Equine Games at Arena UK, Grace achieved 1st and 2nd in her dressage tests before going on to achieve 2nd and 3rd in her combined training classes along with a second and fourth in her showjumping classes. Proving what a fabulous all-rounder she is, she then achieved 7th in the handy pony in a very loud evening gala, galloping out with Emma Jane carrying Union flag for her finale!

Crystal Sunset, bred by Jenny Tillyer, owned by Vicki Kirkcaldy and competed by Frankie Webb. “Clovis isn’t a show pony, he’s a family pony that has been a best friend to many children over the years and tried pretty much every equestrian discipline going. At 27, he does take life a bit easier nowadays but he loved his party weekend at the Veteran Horse Society Championships…placed in every class, not a single jumping fault all weekend. Made his elementary debut in the ‘strictly fancy dressage to music’ having previously never done higher than a prelim test, and, as his rider Frankie was Mary Poppins, didn’t bat an eyelid about having a kite flown or riding with an umbrella up!

Governing Document

The Society is a charitable company limited by guarantee, incorporated on 18th August 1997 and registered as a charity on 8th October 1997.

The Society was formed under a Memorandum of Association which established the objects and powers of the Charitable Company and is governed under its Articles of Association. Under those Articles, the trustees are elected at the Annual General Meeting and one-third of their number are subject to retirement by rotation at each Annual General Meeting. The trustees may appoint a person who is willing to act to be a trustee to fill a vacancy until the next Annual General Meeting. A trustee who retires at an Annual General Meeting may, if willing to act, be reappointed.

The liability of the members is limited to such contribution as may be required (not exceeding £11) to the Charity's assets if it should be wound up while he or she is a member or within one year after he or she ceases to be a member, for payment of the Charity's debts and liabilities contracted before he or she ceases to be a member, and of the costs, charges and expenses of winding up, and for the adjustment of the rights of the contributories among themselves.

If the Charity is wound up or dissolved and after all its debts and liabilities have been satisfied there remains any property it shall not be paid to or distributed among the members of the Charity, but shall be given or transferred to some other charity or charities having objects similar to the objects of the Charity.

Appointment of Trustees

The President and other elected officers are appointed at the Annual General Meeting. The other Board members are elected for a three year term, one third retiring annually.

Objectives and Activities

The objects for which the Society is established are:

• to encourage the preservation and breeding of the best type of New Forest ponies;

• to undertake to record New Forest ponies and enter them in the New Forest Pony Stud Book;

• to hold two annual shows, one for entered New Forest stallions, and one for the encouragement and improvement of the breed of entered New Forest ponies.

The Charity's main activities are based at its office in Bransgore where one part-time assistant is employed, supported by officers of the Society. Shows are generally held at New Park, Brockenhurst.

Achievements and Performance

The Charity sees its main achievements as the successful recording of New Forest ponies and the promotion and preservation of the breed.

Financial Review

The net incoming resources for the year amounted to £10,242. This increases the total reserves at the year end to £299,670 which are unrestricted funds.

Reserves Policy

The trustees consider the reserve requirements are adequately met as the income of the society covered its operating costs so that the reserves were not eroded.

Investment Policy

The trustees policy on investment is designed to continue to generate income to enable the society to continue with its objects without exposing the capital funds to any undue level of risk. Investment decisions are taken in conjunction with stockbrokers' advice.

Responsibilities of the Trustees

Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements that give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Charity at the balance sheet date and of its surplus or deficit for the financial year. In doing so the trustees are required to:

• select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;

• observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP (FRS 102);

• make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

• state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;

• prepare the accounts on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the Charity will continue in operation; and

• fulfill the objects of the Society.

The trustees are responsible for maintaining proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the company and to enable them to ensure the accounts comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Small Company Exemptions

This report has been prepared in accordance with the special provisions of Part 15 of the Companies Act 2006 relating to small companies and was approved by the board on 2nd February 2022 and signed on its behalf.

The New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society

I report on the unaudited financial statements of the society for the year ended 30th November 2021 which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities, the Balance Sheet and related notes.

Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner

The trustees (who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of company law) are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:

• examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;

• to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and

• to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of Independent Examiner's Report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent Examiner's Statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

• (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

• to keep accounting records in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006; and

• to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records, comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the Companies Act 2006 and with the methods and principles in the Charities SORP (FRS 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland")

have not been met; or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

These financial statements for the year ended 30th November 2021 have not been audited because the company is entitled to the exemption provided by 477 of the Companies Act 2006 and members have not required the company to obtain an audit of its accounts for the year in accordance with Section 476. The directors acknowledge their responsibility for ensuring that the company keeps accounting records which comply with Section 386 of the Act and preparing accounts which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the company as at the end of the financial year and of the results for the financial year in accordance with the requirements of Sections 396 and 474(2) of the Act and which otherwise comply with the requirements of this Act relating to accounts so far as applicable to the company.

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions applicable to companies subject to the small companies regime within Part 15 of the Companies Act 2006.

These financial statements were approved by the board on 2nd February 2022 and signed on its behalf.

1. Accounting Policies

Charity Information

The New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society is a charitable company limited by guarantee established under its Memorandum and Articles of Association and registered with the Charity Commission and Companies House in England and Wales. The principal address is Deepslade House, Ringwood Road, Bransgore, Christchurch, Dorset, BH23 8AA.

Basis of Preparation

The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention with the exception of investments which are included at market value and in accordance with the requirements of the Statement of Recommended Practice "Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (SORP 2019), applicable UK accounting standards, the Companies Act 2006 and the Charities Act 2011.

As the company is a charity, the wording of the statutory formats required by the Companies Act 2006 has been appropriately amended to give a true and fair view.

The accounts are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity.

Going concern

The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the charitable company's ability to continue as a going concern.

Fund Accounting

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objects of the Charity.

Incoming Resources

Incoming resources represents the invoiced value of goods and services, less returns and is included when receivable. Annual subscriptions from members are included in income of the year to which they relate. Voluntary income received by way of donations and gifts is included when receivable. Legacies are recognised when there is entitlement, certainty of receipt and the amount can be measured with sufficient reliability. Investment income is included when receivable.

Resources Expended

Resources expended are recognised in the period when the liability is incurred and include attributable VAT which is not recoverable.

• Costs of generating funds are those costs incurred in trading activities that raise funds.

• Charitable expenditure includes costs associated with the staging of shows and functions and includes both direct and support costs relating to the activities.

• Investment management costs include portfolio management fees.

• Governance costs include those primarily associated with constitutional and statutory requirements.

• Support costs include central functions and have been allocated to activity cost categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Tangible Fixed Assets and Depreciation

Fixed assets are capitalised at cost. Depreciation is provided on all tangible fixed assets at rates calculated to write off the cost less estimated residual value over their expected useful lives. The rates generally applicable are:

Investments

Investments held as fixed assets are valued at their market value ruling at the balance sheet date and the gain or loss is taken to the Statement of Financial Activities.

Stock

Stocks are valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Cost is calculated on a First In First Out basis.

Debtors and Creditors Receivable/Payable Within One Year

Debtors and creditors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered.

Financial Instruments

The charity only has financial assets and financial liabilities of a kind that qualify as basic financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value and subsequently measured at their settlement value.

2. Legal Status of the Charity

The Society does not have a share capital as it is a company limited by guarantee, whereby every member undertakes to contribute to the assets of the society, in the event of the company being wound up, an amount not exceeding £11 each, if required.

Trustees are not remunerated for their services. There are no material transactions involving the supply of goods or services to the society by any trustees.

TREASURERS REPORT 2021

The accounts show a net loss of £2,301, a slight improvement on last year (loss of £4,305).

In this financial year, due to COVID, we were unable to meet for our AGM or hold the Point to Point. We were able to hold the Annual Show although lower than normal receipts did result in a slightly higher than normal financial loss.

Subscription receipts (£19,013) are up on last year (£17,202) which hopefully indicates activity returning to normal levels. This also reflects efforts by office staff to ensure members are paying correct subscription charges.

The Society received further furlough funding of £1,178 (2020 £3,149) which helped to reduce losses.

Computer support & repairs are increased by approximately £1,200 due to computer upgrades and office re-organisation.

The Society’s investments have performed better than expected although investment income is down slightly on last year.

Gains on the sale of investments are up from last year (£471) to £1,486.

The market value of investments increased from £256,440 to £269,742 although of course this is subject to future market fluctuations.

It is encouraging to see a small improvement in the accounts and the Society remains in a strong financial position.
