The Bansang Hospital Appeal is constituted by Deed of Trust and registered
with the Charty Commission for England and Wales (No 1064469). Its
address is 4 The Leys, Orlingburyi Northamptonshire NN14 IJE. The Trustees

The objettive of the chaiity is to provide SUPEK)rt to Bansang Hosptsl and the
people of the surrounding ar&i in The Gambia through the supply of medical
equipmen( pharma￿utICalS arKI other humanitarian aid.
The primary focus of the Appeal remains to rdise fvnds that can be used to
continually update and improve the structure and facilrties of the hospitsl
whilst provlding urgently required medical equipment and phamla￿utiCa1
products, working to motivate and retsin staff and facilitstr'ng help and
support from skilled volunteers and other organisations. The Appeal has been
transforming healthcare delivery in Ban5arvJ Sin￿ 1992.
I began my report last year wlth the sad news that the Hospltal's Chlef
Executive Offlcer Baba Jeng had passed away after a short illness. There then
followed a short period when the Hosprtal operated without a ￿0 but In
December 2023 Dr Masirending Njie was appointed CEO. Dr Njie is a
gynaecologist / obstetric surgeon and will be spending one or two days a
week in that role, in particular carying out obstetric and gynaecological
procedures. Thls wlll be a wekome addlt5on to the treatsnent that the hospital
can offer as previously patients would have had to be tsansferred 250 miles to
Banjul for such surgery.
Turning now to the accounts, (k)nations and legacies for the year to 30 June
2023 totalled £101,379, which Is a welcome retum to pre covld levels. Our
extremely generous regular benefactors have, as ever, continued to suptJ)rt
US With many increasing their Month￿ donations. We have also benefited
from many individual one off donations. I would like to thank all our
benefactors most sincerely. Without them we would not have been able to
supwrt the hospltal to trE eX￿t that we have done.
Two very successful fundrdising evenings contributed £3,781 and ￿nts1
Income from our investment property totalled £13,200. Wth interest of £180
totsl receipts for the year were up 25% to £118,540.

Totsl expendibjre in the year under rw)rt was £119,311. The main
expenditLJre was on building work {£38k). This expenditure was highlighted In
detsil in last yearfs ￿[X)rt and predominanty covered the refvrt)ishment of
one of the last staff ac£ommodation blocks, the construction of a Broiler
Chicken House to work alongside the F15h Farni to provide patients with
essential protein and materials for the rebuilding of the toilet blcKk in the local
prison. Tr other main expendrture was on the ongolng fijndlng for the
sponsorship of staff members and payments for inrtiatives to retsin and
motlvate staff (£25k), Welfa￿ payments to provide ri￿ to all staff members
and to replenish the Forni Feeding Fund (£18k), salaries (£20k),
phaMla￿utiCa1 products {£6k) and plant equlprnert and fumiture (£7k).
The accounts continue to show an organlsaVon wlth great financial strength
arKI long-terni financial secuiity.
One of the main projects completed durirvj the period Sin￿ our last rep)rt In
August 2023 has been to dear bats from the Admin B1￿k roof. The bats had
galned aC￿sS to the roof void and were congregating in great numbers. Bat
droppings were accumulating on the flcM)r and the smell was becoming
unbearable and a possible health risk. The problem was affecting work in the
admin area and was becoming an extreme embarrassment when visitors we
on site. The projett comprised the removal of the bats, cleanlng the area of
bat droppings, filling all bat access pjints, replacing s￿lIed tlmbers on the
ceilings, replastering the ceiling and replacirvj damaged windows and nets.
The work has been completed and activty in the Admin Block retumed to
normal.
January 2024 saw the completion of a low mainterPn￿, fully ￿n0Vated and
extended block of wen new homes for senior m￿lca7 staff. The works
Included a new AIuzFnc ro)f, nav fvlly tiled en suite bathrooms, rewired to
include LED lighting, ceiling fans, aluminium windowsldoors and tiled
throughouL Sitting room fumiture was made IcKally in the town; this helps trj
support the local economy. By providing qualty accommodation we retain
skilled staff, and the stsff are happy and motivated to be provided with
comfortable homes to retum home to.
We are presently wor*ing on a similar housing propct to provide additional
accommcthtion. It is reaping rewards as the hospital now attratts quality
medical personnel wfKJ a￿ p￿pared to work in such a harsh environment.

We have mentloned in the last two reports that we have construtted a fish
farm and a broiler chid(en house within the hospitsl grounds to provide fish
and meat protein for the patSents. These are fvlly sustairkible projects which
are designed to deliver low<ost nutrition to aid the patients recovery. Protein
is the main building block in a dlet that will help to aid a patienvs recovery.
The first fish harvest trM)k pla￿ In December 2023 arKI a larger harvest Is
scheduled to tske pla￿ in June 2024. The first 250 chicks in the Broiler House
were successfully reared to maturity in February 2024. Following thls success
500-day old chicks have been collected armd settled into their new
surroundlngs. These will be fully grown by June 2024.
The Form Feedlng Fund, estsblished in 2017. has contlnued to provide
medical, food and financial support to patlents and their families to enable
them to stsy in Bansang until thelr loved ones have b￿n dlscharged from the
hospitsl. The FFF continues to be funded by Fonn Nutntion, a plant based
natural fcrf)d prcKducts buslness. We are most grateful for their oryoing
support. One recent example of supkx)rt given by the FFF to the most
vulnerable patients is when an orphaned chlld, found abandoned and clo* to
death, was brought into the hospitsl by a kirKI and caring lady. The lady sald
that if the child survived, she would care for him together with her own
chlldren. The necessary medlcal management was glven to the child wlth
IOO¥o funding from FFF. The child received clothing, milk fomiula,
medicatlons and love from the amazlng stsff who cared for him. It VRS a
happy (ky for all Con￿rned when the child Eeft the hospitsl In arms of
that special lady.
Other notable hlghllghts durtng the year Include:
We again provided a 25Kg bag of ri￿ to all 557 staff. One bag will feed an
average family for 2 weeks, so it is a substantial gift. This is the fourth
time we have done this and is part of the Appeal's policy to improve staff
morale.
The Appeal provided phamiaceutical drugs and other medical supplies
when the￿ was an urgent need to ￿pIeniSh depleted stocks.
We provided rep1a￿rnent tsactor tyres for the two tractors that we had
previously provided to the lY)spitsl.
We purchased a diathermy mathine for u* in gynaecological operations
to be carried out by Dr Njie.
We funded the construttion of a safety wall around the oxygen plant that
had b*n provided to the hospitsl and also rel(x7ted the escorts washing
a￿a away from the planL

Many of the* items were directy sponsored by long standlng benefactors of
the Appeal and we thank them for their continued generoslty. It is with great
sadness, hOWe￿r, that I have to report that one of our long-terni
benefactors, Mathilde Keller, recenty passed away. Together with her
husband, Theo and Mathilde Keller were regular visitors to Bansang from thelr
home in Switzerland and built up a special ￿lationth1p with the siaff at the
hospital. They were also regular annual donors providing life5aving drugs for
the patlents In the t￿￿pItal. May Mathilde rest in peace.
I visited the hospital again in January 2024 together with Specialist Neonatsl
Nurse Jeannette Payne who joined me for what VRS her thirteenth year
ensurin9 gcKKI prattl￿ in the treatment of the sid( nthom. This year
Jeanette a150 implemented lif&ving training to all members of stsff.
Future plans for the Appeal Ind￿je the a)nstruttion of a new Fernale Ward,
but this is a considerable undertaking arKI will be reliant on the necessary
funds being raised. In the meartime, we will continue to support the ￿SpI￿1
and the local communlty as we have done for trE past thity-two years.
I was a little apprehensive on my retum vislt to Bansang Hosptsl, after the
sad demise of our beloved, caring and dynamic CEO, Mr Baba Jeng. I had
worked alongside hlm for many fruittul years l￿fore his sudden death on the
22nd of June 2023. Last year Baba Jeng wrote to me saying "It has b￿n a
wonderful, truthful and genuine 30 years pathership, I would like to thank all
those who support the BHA by donating either in cash or kind and
implementing all those important projects undertsken in Bansang Hospital.. I
wlll never forget the man who worked tirele55ty to ensure that he left a legacy
for the poor people that the tryital serves.
My fears of meeting the nth appointed CEO Dr mas1￿r￿lIng Njie were cast
aside upon our first meeting. Dr Njie is a Man who shares my vision, arKI I
am confident that the hospltal will go from strerWI to strength. I have
nicknamed him "Action Man". I'm filled with renewed enthusiasm as I see the
impart that he has had alreaty. Dr Njie wishes to see MO￿ skllled medlcal
personnel. This will impact greaty on the care of patients as they will no
longer have to contemplate what is for many an impossible round trlp of some
500 miles to receive help at the Teaching Hospital in Banjul. In Bansang the
staff have tsken oWne￿hIp of THEIR hospitsl. It is a very inspiring feeling
after all the Struggles that w￿ have been confronted with in past years.

After thity-two years of frdmily and loyal fiiends support for Bansang Hospitsl,
I thank most sin￿rely, everyone for having the trust and faith in how we
have handled their hard-eamed donations. ￿au* of everyone's support the
hospitsl has been declared as the-Best Hospitsl in the Country for
Performance and Outcomes". I have been told on numerous occasions that
being such a small charity arKI receiving feedbad( on tK)w all donations are
used for projects is what makes BHA differenL
I must give special thanks to ALL the amaziTvJ staff in Bansang Hospltsl. To
witness their skills, hard bvork and happiness at serving their people is truly
commendable. If ever you need to S￿ a hospital in attion that retsins near to
970/0 of ts staff, then BansaNJ is the pla￿ to leam from.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above
charity fthe Trusn for the year ended 30 June 2023, which a￿ set out on
pages 7 and 8.
Responsibilitles and basls of report
As the chariVs trustees you a￿ resp)nsible for the p￿para￿on of the
accounts in accordan￿ with the requirements of the Charlties Act 2011 fthe
ACY).
I report in respett of my examination of the Twsvs accounts carried out
under sectlon 145 of the Act and in (2rrying out my examination, I have
followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charty Commission under
section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
IndeperKlent examinerfs statement
I have completed my e￿OrnInation. I conflrm that no materlal matters have
come to my attention in connection with tre examination which gives me
cause to belleve that In any material respect:
the accounting records were not kept In accordan￿ wlth section 130
of the Act; or

the accounts did not comply wlth the applicable requirements
conceming the fm and content of accounts set out In the Charltles
