Annual Report 2023 - 2024

This Report outlines the activities and developments that have taken place between July 2023 and June 2024. The Trust were successful in their applications to Cornwall Council Community Chest, the Foyle Foundation and the National Lottery Community Fund.

Kara Hellys

Building upon the success of the Kara Hellys Travelling Show in 2023, the Trust attracted funding from Councillors Loveday Jenkin, Guy Foreman and Mike Thomas to support arts workshops and activities in Helston. We are keen to engage with children and adults about some of the untold stories the team have researched, and highlight and celebrate some of the historical buildings and lesser-known people of Helston’s past.

Story Time

The funding from the Foyle Foundation enabled the Trust to work in 16 rurally isolated early years settings in Central and west Cornwall. The project aim was to stimulate the language and communication of very young children in rurally isolated settings … through high quality professional arts activities and stories. A total of 80 creative, interactive workshops were delivered and 360 children participated and 32 early years professionals were involved. Parents were also involved in final workshop sessions, providing feedback and comments from their children. Evidence of children’s development and practitioner engagement has been collated and the project has enabled the Trust to develop a closer working relationship with Cornwall Council’s Early Years Development Team and settings across Central and West Cornwall.

Seasons in the Sun

Following on from our recent project, Celebrating You , a conversation with the Cornwall Memory Café Network Coordinator resulted in a unique relationship being established between the Memory Café Network and the Trust to develop ongoing reminiscence arts workshops in Memory Cafés across Cornwall. Commencing in May 2024, Seasons in the Sun will enable the artists to visit 18 Memory Cafes across Cornwall on 3 occasions over 2 years. This initiative will enable approximately 450 people living with memory challenges and their carers to participate, and we are optimistic that the stimulating activities will contribute to physical and mental wellbeing and self-confidence and self-esteem.

After the Rain (James Sargent Donation)

This project concluded during May 2024. James Sargent generously donated £10,596.48 to the Trust during 2021-2022. The team of artists created a new piece of work which explored loss and joy, involving an ensemble of 5 dancers, clarinet, string quartet, photography and spoken word. As James had a real passion for each of these creative areas, we feel sure that he would have really appreciated this collaborative approach. The devising and rehearsing process began in 2023 and concluded in May 2024 with two beautiful and evocative performances of ‘After the Rain’ at Trelissick Gardens.

We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of one of our Trustees, Karen Butler, who passed away this year. She was so committed to supporting young and old alike, in and through the arts, and gave so much of her time to the Trust. Her passion and commitment will be missed. The Chair

would also like to take this opportunity to thank Trustees and Consultants for their continued commitment and contributions during 2023-2024.
