Activities and objectives
The Wave was known as Lee Community Church and used to meet in Lee-on-Solent. We now meet in Gosport, as we felt after prayer that we should move. It is a new era and many things have changed. We looked for a building, without success at first, but then were offered the use of two buildings used by other churches we are in connection with. We meet in one on a Sunday morning and the other the following Sunday evening. It feels like this is the right thing at present as we want to connect with other churches and be a mutual support. There is strength in unity as well as God’s blessing.
We have been running a Food Bank for several years, going out weekly to the community to deliver food. We have just recently stopped this as we feel it is time to close and a number of other food banks are available locally.
Some of our congregation are people with mental health problems and special needs. We feel we offer a support to them, particularly during a difficult time nationally.
We are also running an Alpha Course which is reaching a variety of people, some with mental health issues. We believe that pointing people to Jesus this way and running a church which deliberately shows love and care to all is a way of giving real community support.
We partner with one of the other churches to offer prayer for those who would like it on the streets and in the building.
As a church we focus on providing meetings where the presence of God is the most important thing and people come to meet Him and receive healing and hope.
We also have a church member who works in Kenya for, “To Kenya With Love” and has been instrumental in building and opening a school there. We support a couple of the students at the school financially so that they can complete their education.
Structure
We have a couple who take the Senior Leadership role and other support leaders. However, we see each member as important as the next, no matter what their role (including leadership.) We disagree with a heavy authoritarian leadership, although leaders should be honoured and trusted in their role.
Trustees are normally recruited from church members and are therefore well known and trusted.
Finances
We have a steady flow of income from our members that enables us to support our church member in Kenya and to help others closer to home. We have a reserve account which is a buffer for the current account so that if funds drop we can transfer over an amount to support the work we do. If the current account is growing then occasionally funds are transferred to the reserve. The original plan was to use the reserve funds (when large enough) to buy or rent premises. That is a possible long-term plan, however, we can use it to support people in need, which may be necessary in the present economic climate.
