INTRODUCTION The Trustees are pleased to present their report and the audited financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2021. The Trustees confirm that the annual report and fin3nci21 statements of the Charity comply with current statutory requirements, the requirements of the Charity's governing document and the provisions of the Statement of Recomrmended Practice for Charities ISORP 20151 (Second Edition, effective l January 2019). In the year to December 2021, there were over 64, 194 enquiries at independent clinics across England and Wales supported by Lawworks. These enquiries resulted in 48,477 people being given legal advice and a further 15,596 were provided with Eeneral information, referral to other Services or, where eligi ble, to lesal aid providers. Lawworks provides services and support for our members, but our activities also benefit many more organisations and services. For example, Lawworks faci litated pro bono legal advice for smaller charities and not-for-profits which in turn worked with or supported over 1,372,000 individualsduringtheyear. Our ultimate beneficiaries are those who would otherwise be unable to access justice. The experience and feedback of people accessing clinics in the Lawworks clinics network underli nes research demonstrating that timely access to advice can have positive benefits, i ncluding to physical and mental health and wellbeing. An inabil ity to access legal advice can result in problems worsening and escalating. The objects ofthe Charityare- To promote the upholding and proper administration of the law by.. encouraging, supporting and advising lavvyers and their staff in the provision of pro bono legal sen/ices', and advancing the education and training of lavwrfers and their staff undertaking or intending to undertake pro bono legal services. to encourage, support and advise lawrfers and their staff to undertake charitable voluntary work in the administration of the law, education, social services, communitywork and other charitable activities for the benefit ofthe community. to provide pro bono legal services. ene When planning and reviewing Lawworks, activities for the year, the Trustees have considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit. Lawworks, charitable activities focus on enabling individuals and charities and not-for-profit organisations to access pro bono legal advice, information and support.

OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES Covid-19 to pay., Connecting smaller charities and not for profit organisations with pro bono legal services and enabling them to deliver their mission., Addressing barriers to pro bono and addi ng our voice for policy change and pursuing access tojustice for 311., Enhancing our i mpact through organisational efficiencies, leadership and developing our people. During the year Lawworks (with the support of expert external consultants) concluded an audit of equal ity, diversity and inclusion practices in the organisation. Following on from this,we have renewed our committment to sustai ning a fair, open and inclusive culture. The ongoing pandemic continued to impact during the year, including for our staff and volunteers, our members, pro bono clinics and not-for-profit organisations. The pandemic disproportionately affected vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals and communities, i ncludi ng those supported by clinics, not-for-profits and our in-house solicitors and volunteer5 delivering our'secondary 5pecialisation' projects. Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, Lawworks was able to deliver effectively on the strategic objectives and business plan. About Lawworks L2wWorks promotes, supports 2nd facil itates pro bono legal services that extend access to the law for individuals and communities in need and the organisations that supportthem. We champion pro bono because of the positive contribution and difference it makes for individLials, communities and society. We work lin England and Wales) with the solicitors, profession and our members, the Law Societyof England and Wales, law schools and13W Students, law centres, advice agencies and others to develop and support pro bono legal services, and to promote access tojustice for all. The current Lawworks strategy has the following objectives.. Promoti ng, facilitating and developing pro bono across the solicitors, profession and at law schools in England and Wales., Faci litating and supporting pro bono legal services and access tOjUStice for people in need and without the means Lawworks staff continued to work from home duringthe year; 3 phased return to new office premises lat Lincoln House, 2nd floor, 296- 302 High Holborn,WCIV 7JHI began in September 2021. About legal pro bono Pro bono makes an important contri bution towards enabl ing ind ividu3ls and organisations lin p3rticul3r, smaller charities and social enterprises) to access legal support, advice and representation. The overall contri bution of pro bono may be relatively small, but its impact and importance is significant. Legal pro bono is not. and in Lawworks, view should not be seen as, an alternative to an adequately funded system of leg31 aid nor an alternative for f und ing for local advice agencies and law centres. Changes to legal aid (introduced from April 20131 continue to have a significant impact on many people's abil ity to access justice. Pro Bono Connect Pro Bono Connect is a schemewhich faci litates collaboration between solicitors and barristers working together pro bono on civil matters for ind ividuals, charities and community groups who cannot afford legal advice or representation. Originally set up in 2015 byjamie Goldsmith Qcof One Essex Court Chambers, the successful scheme came underthe governance of Lawworks in 2019 and is supported by a dedicated staff post. An executive group supports the scheme and Advocate is a key partner. Secondary specialisation Our secondary specialis3tion projects support the development of in-depth, pro bono in are35 of social welfare13W. This currently includes welfare benefits representation (supporting volunteer solicitors to represent individuals at I 1st tier) social security benefit appeals), an unpaid wages project, and'voices for Fami lies,, with the charity Together for Short Lives, supporting the parents and carers of children with life-limiting conditions. Our in-house 501icitors, who are experienced experts in their field, provide or facil it3te tailored training for participating volunteers, and ongoing support and supen/ision. E)uringthe year, weworked with13W firms to establ ish a new project to provide bespoke pro bono supporton domestic violence matters. The project, C311ed the Domestic Abuse Response Alliance IE)ARAI, was launched in February 2022, receiving referrals f rom the National Centre for E)omestic Violence INCEIVI and supervision provided by leading family law firm Beck Fitzgerald. The participating firms make a fi nancial contribution to the project and additional trust f unding has Digital plafforms and projects A Significant development has been Lawworks investment and supwrt for a number of online and digital projects, including the Pro Bono Portal U K. Followi ng a successful pilot and development stage (commencing in 20201, the Portal was formally launched in November 2021 initiallyutilising it for the Lawworks Not-for-Profits Programtne. Originally developed by Justice Connect i n Australia, their award- winning portal has been adapted for use in the UK linitiallyin England and Wales) and other international jurisdictions. The Portal connects lawyers with pro bono opportunities f rom one place - efficiently, simply and securely. Lawworks is ambitious for the scale and reach of the Portal, including organisations Lawworks Annual Report and Accounts 2021 | 9

having direct access 2nd use for their own pro bono requests and opportunities, with the vision that it will be available to all solicitors and other lawyers across England and Wales- a nation21'one-stop shop for accessing a range of pro bono opwrtunities. In April 2022 the Portal won a Leg21 Innovations Award Ifor'Disruptive Technology oftheyear'l. Duringtheyear Lawworks also continued to develop Free Legal Answers, a website which enables i ndividuals on low incomes to access initial or one-off pro bono legal advice. The project was supported by agrantfrom the Ministryof Justice in partnershi p with the Access to J ustice Foundation. Barriers to pro bono and accessing justice During the year, Lawworks continued to seek to address barriers to pro bono engagement and contribute a pro bono 'policy voice, to enable access tojustice. Our policy work draws on the experience and expertise of pro bono clinics, our members, and partners. Working collaboratively, we aim through our policy work to.. communicate both the value and contribution of pro bono and also its limits., addres5 Systemic issues that tnay result in the need for legal advice and repr-esentation and create barriers to access to justice., develop an evidence base on unmet leg31 need, and best practice in pro bono, using the insights, learning and data from our programmes and projects. Lawworks provides the Secretariatto the All-party Parliamentary Group IAPPGI on Pro Bono and Public Legal Education. We engage with regulators, especially the Solicitors Regulation Authority1SRAI and the Legal Services Board ILSBI. including on reform of solicitors training, and regulation and the i mpl ications for pro bono. During the year,we met with theSRAtodiscuss issuesarisingfrom the regulation of 'claims management activities,, which resulted in new guidance being published in May2022. We PLiblished our annual Clinics Network report, highlighting the work 2nd contribution of pro bonoclinics, the support provided 2nd any newor emergi ng issues lincludi ng ongoing impacts of the pandemic). Duringtheyear Lawworks also appointed a dedicated staff resource to develop and support The Jeanie Project, an onl ine tool (developed by a charitywith the same namel which assists in the collecting of relevant i nformation for legal problems, creating a brief for pro bono lawqers and others. Going forward, Lawworkswill continue to explore how the different d igital platforms and tools can be integrated, as well as being committed to sharing learning with others i n the sector. E)uringtheyear, L3wWorks 31soworked with the Law Society to establ ish a centralised online platform to help coordinate pro bono advice from the profession in the event of a major incident, includ ing terrorist attacks and civic disasters such 35 the Grenfel l Tower fire.
