The Kerrigan Savage Waves Charitable Trust

Registered Charity No : 1063921

43 Ledborough Lane Beaconsfield Bucks HP9 2DB Annual Report 2022

Introduction to Waves

The charity was set up as a memorial to Kerrigan Savage. Kerrigan was working for Barclays Bank in Nairobi, Kenya, when he died in a motor accident on 5 April 1996. He was 26 years old. During his training with Barclays in the UK and in Kenya he became aware of the plight of so many disadvantaged children, and also of the need to preserve and protect wildlife. It therefore seemed right and appropriate to his parents and to his brother that a charity to operate in these two spheres would provide a fitting tribute.

The charity is registered with the Charity Commissioners and constituted by Deed of Trust. There are no restrictions on the investment powers of the trustees. The trustees during the period 1[st] August 2021 to 31[st] July 2022were Malcolm, Margaret and Jonathan Savage.

The object of Waves is the relief of poverty and advancement of education for children worldwide and particularly in Kenya, East Africa and Bristol, England, although now Waves focuses on Kenya. The Trustees’ policy is providing education opportunities that offer “hope for a better life” while also to bring some pleasure and some fun to children. Waves is run by the Trustees, and relies on donations and fund-raising activity organised by the trustees and volunteers. All Waves projects are for the public benefit. The Waves student sponsorship scheme gives young people living in extreme poverty the opportunity to be educated to University level. The scheme enables them to become financially independent and able to assist their family. The Trustees, in making decisions, have had due regard to The Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant.

Income and Operating Costs

Income this period was considerably higher than for the previous period mainly due to the Fundraising Events income from the TCS London Marathon held on 3rd October 2021. This event is a major fundraising event for Waves and had been deferred due to the impact of lockdown and the corona virus (Covid-19) pandemic. A Waves team of 5 raised a total of £10,415 exclusive of Gift Aid. The total included a matching donation of £710 from Barclays Bank via Charities Trust. A further £3,000 in sponsorship was received in support of 2 runners registered to run in the TCS London Marathon 2022 scheduled for October 2nd 2022. A fundraiser (JT Booklet) generously organised by a Waves supporter at his own expense that generated £610 in donations in the last period generated a further £794 in this period.

Total Donations came to £8629 compared to £ 8926 last year . We are fortunate to have retained a number of loyal supporters who donate on a regular monthly basis, shown under Standing Orders and Give as You Earn (£5255 ). Education Sponsorship supporters provided a further £940 and the employer, BT, of one of our GAYE donors gave a matching sum of £180.

In the Receipts and Payments Account the Gift Aid received back from HMRC is included under Tax Refunds. The total tax refund of £1875 is from Gift Aid on sponsorship donations for the Virgin Money London Marathon 2021 made through Virgin Money Giving. Bank deposits interest was £44 , down from £122 in the last period, due to the reduction in interest rates.

London Marathon Events refunded £3,552 ( shown in Fund Raising) for 8 London Marathon places held by Waves. The refund scheme aimed to reduce the excess of places held by charities due to the cancellation of the London Marathon 2020 for amateur runners.

43 Ledborough Lane Beaconsfield Bucks HP9 2DB Annual Report 2022

Our income totalled £26804 compared to £10127 in the previous period. The increase was due to the London Marathon fundraising and refund.

This period Operating Costs at £2448 were not covered by Bank Interest and Tax Refunds together totalling £1,918. The operating costs include £2220 for the purchase of 5 Golden Bond places for the London Marathon 2022 due to take place on October 2[nd] 2022 in the next period.

This financial year income exceeded costs by £18,377 with funds held in our CAF Deposit Accounts of £44,065 , up from £43,571.

Our total funds this year are £73,600 compared with £55,222 previously. We can be confident that sufficient funds are available to ensure that the young people relying on our sponsorship for their education will be able to complete their courses and achieve graduation.

Activities for the Current Year

Activities in this period continued to be affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath. However, it was possible to hold the Kerrigan Cup Football Tournament in June for the first time since 2019. This event involves girls’ football teams and boys’ football teams from all four Mukuru primary schools plus a team from the Mukuru Streetboys’ Rehabilitation Centre. The Tournament was held over a number of weeks with Finals Day held towards the end of this period..

A donation of £255 was given to AFEW (African Fund for Endangered Wildlife) in support of the annual student safaris.

We continue to work only through reputable organisations that we know and trust and have worked with for over 20 years. For each secondary student we receive annual school reports and letters for their sponsor, through the partner organisation’s social worker. For ascertaining that funds are used only for the purposes given there are extra steps for the University sponsorship programme, in particular having access through the students’ online portal to fees payments and exam results which confirms that students are attending and progressing in their course.

Our Secondary and Tertiary Education Scheme for selected students from the Mukuru Promotion Centre Schools and the Ruben Centre School gives the students the opportunity to gain a career qualification which would otherwise be impossible for them. At the end of the current period Waves is supporting 5 students from Ruben School through secondary education. 2 of these have qualified for University Entrance in September 2022. During this period 1 Ruben student (Beverlyne) joined Moi University to study Actuarial Science. Ruben students Catherine and Eva graduated with 2:1 degrees in Communication and Public Relations, and Counselling Psychology respectively while Mukuru student Agnes graduated with a 2:1 in Hospitality Management. With a further 4 students from the 2 centres in tertiary education currently at college or university, this gives a total of 10 students supported by Waves. We made donations this year totalling £5,723.35 for these education purposes. Annual Report ‘22

43 Ledborough Lane Beaconsfield Bucks HP9 2DB Annual Report 2022

Currently there are 2 Waves Scholars from Starehe Boys School in Nairobi in education; Philip graduated with a 2:1 degree in Law from the University of Nairobi and is now studying for his Bar exams at the Kenya School of Law. Peter is in his second year at Kenyatta University reading Computer Studies. The cost of Starehe students during the period was £ 784 .

We provide all tertiary students with an essential laptop. In this period a laptop was provided for one new University student, Beverlyne.

Until the pandemic all 3 Trustees made regular visits to monitor, manage and maintain very close involvement with all projects we have initiated. A main purpose of our visits to Kenya is to develop these relationships and to meet and mentor our sponsored students. The latest visit was in September 2019 which included a Grand Reunion for all students past and present. No visit was possible in this period due to health concerns regarding covid. We currently maintain close contact with the University students and partner organisations through email.

Waves is ready to resume providing funding for the normal extra-curricular school activities as soon as requested by our partner organisations in Kenya. The Sponsorship Scheme continues to work well and future funding for the students is secure.

The Trustees regret that health issues resulted in the late filing of the accounts for this period. Going forward the assistance of an accountant will be used.

Malcolm Savage, Chairman,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees
