## **The Janki Foundation for Spirituality in Healthcare Report of the Trustees For the year ended 31 October 2025**
Tribute to Ratan Thadani
Ratan Thadani was a founding Trustee and long-time Financial Adviser to The Janki Foundation, serving from its creation in 1997 until his passing on 22 November 2024. His colleagues valued his sound judgement, wise counsel, and deep commitment to bringing spiritual values into healthcare. He supported Global Hospital generously and took sincere interest in the Foundation’s wider mission. He is remembered with gratitude for his kindness, fatherly support, quiet wisdom, and the significant, enduring contribution he made to the organisation
Tribute to Mahesh Patel, who stepped down as a JF Trustee on 12 September 2025. Mahesh has made an invaluable contribution to JF, offering steadfast support and guidance over many years. His commitment to Global Hospital projects created a lasting impact, and his early efforts in piloting and promoting VIHASA in the UK helped establish its presence and reach. His dedication and generosity of spirit have enriched JF’s work and will continue to be felt into the future.
The trustees present their report, along with the financial statements of the charity, for the year ended 31 October 2025. The financial statements have been prepared based on the accounting policies set out in note 1 (page 12) to the financial statements and comply with the charity’s constitution. The Janki Foundation for Spirituality in Healthcare is a charity registered with the Charity Commission under registration number 1063908.

## **Structure, Governance and Management**
## _**Trustees and organisational structure**_
The trustees who held office during the financial year and at the date of this report are set out on page 1.
The constitution allows up to 16 trustees to be appointed. All members of the board of trustees shall retire from office together at the end of five years, after the date on which they came into office. However, they may be reelected or re-appointed. All existing trustees were re-elected at the AGM on 27[th] October 2022, after a 5-year term and all have experience of being a charity trustee. Some of the trustees have served in this role since the charity was set up. New trustees are nominated by members of the board of trustees. When appointed they are informed about the work of the charity, charity laws and are provided with information to help them fulfil their roles as trustees.
Each trustee takes responsibility for the charity’s activities, chairing sub-groups as required for the main areas of work. Each sub-group reports to the board of trustees where key decisions are undertaken.
The charity’s honorary secretary together with several volunteers manage the day-to-day operation of the charity on behalf of the trustees.
## _**Risk management**_
Trustees deal with specific areas of the charity, e.g., finance, legal and administrative funding. Individuals chosen for these roles are based on their experience and hence the trustees have mitigated risks via this approach.
All significant activities undertaken are subject to a risk review as part of the initial project assessment and implementation.
Major risks considered are:
- Operational performance, including risks to our personnel and volunteers
- Achievement of our aims and objectives
The trustees review these risks on an ongoing basis and satisfy themselves that adequate systems and procedures are in place to manage the risks identified.
We continue to review our internal controls, management accounting and budget-setting processes to establish a better system of reporting on spending.
## **Objectives and Activities**
The Janki Foundation for Spirituality in Healthcare (JF) is a non-governmental, non-political, non-religious organisation established in 1997. The Trust is constituted under a constitution adopted on 15th December 1996 and amended by resolutions on 3rd August 1997 and 20th June 2000. The constitution was further amended by resolution on 19th August 2014 (Creation of the post of Vice-Chair) and 14th November 2014 (Change in Charity Name approved by the Charity Commission, and change to Clause L (1)), which was registered with the Charity Commission. The constitution defines the charity’s objectives as being:
- Relieve sickness and protect and preserve public health in Rajasthan, India, particularly by assisting the work of The J Watumull Global Hospital and Research Centre at Mount Abu.
- Advance education by the provision of health education programmes and by undertaking medical research and disseminating the useful results thereof.

The activities currently carried out by the charity to deliver these objectives can be broadly categorised into the following areas:
- **J Watumull Global Hospital and Research Centre (GHRC):** The Foundation was originally set up to support GHRC. The charity’s trustees and friends continue to be proactive in providing expertise and guidance on specific projects.
- **Organising educational conferences, dialogues, seminars, lectures, workshops and retreats.**
- **Educational products** - The Foundation continues to look at developing further educational products to support healthcare professionals in their daily challenges.
- **Values in Healthcare: a spiritual approach (VIHASA):** a unique educational programme to support the well-being of healthcare professionals (launched in 2004) - this resource continues to be available online free of charge.
- **Publications and resources – VIHASA pack and three self-help books:**
- _Lifting Your Spirits: Seven Tools for Coping with Illness,_
- _The Heart of Well-being: Seven Tools for Surviving and Thriving_
- _Stillness in the Storm: 7 tools for coping with fear and uncertainty_
The Foundation also produces small booklets to support healing and well-being.
- **Networking and collaborating with other organisations to promote the integration of spirituality in healthcare.**
The charity delivers its charitable objectives entirely through volunteers.
## **Activities, Achievements and Performance**
Over the last year, the Foundation has been involved in various activities.
- **JF annual general meeting** This was held virtually via Zoom on 12[th] September 2025, where amongst other discussions, the accounts for the year ending October 2024 were discussed and approved.
- **JF Steering group meetings**
- This group consists of professionals who have a link or specific interest in health and social care. The group consists of Dr Baneera Shrestha, Bhavna Mistry, Charoo Maroo, Kala Mistry, Masana De Souza, Nirmala Ragbir-Day, Dr Sarah Eagger, Suja Chandran and Viraj Patel. The meetings are held 6 times a year to plan the charity’s activities based on the wider community’s needs.
- **JF Annual event:** _**‘Restoring Human Values, Reclaiming the Soul in Healthcare’**_ by Dr Paquita de Zulueta & Sr Jayanti, Saturday 30[th] Nov 2024, Global Co-operation House, London.
- Over 200 people attended this inspiring afternoon of talks, group discussions, and meditation, co-hosted with the Brahma Kumaris, UK (BK).
- Dr. Paquita de Zulueta, a retired GP and lecturer, presented on key factors for human flourishing in the workplace. She discussed 'soul', moral distress, moral repair, adversity-activated growth, and collective moral resilience, emphasising the importance of empowering individuals to reclaim their ethical agency and fostering environments that promote open communication and shared purpose.
- Sister Jayanti, the Additional Administrative Head of Brahma Kumaris (BK), shared her thoughts on "The Wisdom of the Soul" with real-life examples. She highlighted the significance of human spiritual values that unite people of all nations and mentioned two BK initiatives recognised by the UN: Million Minutes of Peace and Visions for a Better World, which led to the JF’s Values in Healthcare project. She talked about shifting from Sustainable Development Goals to Inner Development Goals, emphasising that values come

from the soul and that spiritual awareness helps people reconnect with love, peace, and compassion. Sister Jayanti also highlighted the importance of meditation as a way to gain clarity and courage, enabling individuals to access core values such as peace and joy and gain access to a reservoir of resilience and empathy.

- **JF Sustenance Retreat** _**'Nurturing the Spirit of Service’**_ Lighthouse Retreat Centre 27[th] -29[th] June 2025. This retreat offered a valuable opportunity for 16 members of the JF team to come together and form meaningful connections. Over the weekend, sessions centred on spiritual growth and included self-reflection, meditation, quiet personal time, and the sharing of service ideas. The group also reviewed ongoing activities and future programmes, including the VIHASA Global–UK Project, the JF Online Learning website, and the JF Annual Lecture. A facilitated workshop on _The Merciful Heart: Serving with Inner Peace and Power_ offered further depth and inspiration. Participants also joined Zoom sessions on JF branding and met with developers of the Yperea, app that creates a digital environment for group meditation and prayer. The weekend was described as deeply nurturing with participants feeling relaxed, refreshed, and better equipped to care for themselves and to serve others with renewed clarity and compassion.
- **The** _**Values in Healthcare**_ **programme**
- The Foundation’s flagship project is Values in Healthcare: a spiritual approach (VIHASA), a modular personal and team development programme supporting practitioner wellbeing. The programme is delivered via a training manual, which was first published in 2004. Since then, the programme has been translated into more than a dozen languages and is in use in over 50 countries. The VIHASA training manual continues to be available online free of charge on the Foundation’s website. Up to the end of October 2025, 530 requests have been received for the free downloadable manual. The printed manual is also available to purchase online at a very reasonable price. Advice and guidance (including requests for training) are given to individuals and organisations who wish to use the programme. VIHASA activities continue around the world, notably in India and South Africa. There is an ongoing sharing of good practices from these regions.
- **VIHASA Global**
This project was initially called VIHASA Online and is an online version of the well-established Values in Healthcare: a spiritual approach (VIHASA) modular programme, with an emphasis on the spiritual tools. It was formally launched in March 2023.
The VIHASA Global Governance group was set up in April 2024. The group consists of Dr Raksha Balbadhur, Suja Chandran, Masana D’Souza, Dr Sarah Eagger, Nirmala Ragbir-Day, Prof Sumantra Ray, Elaine Roddam and Viraj Patel. Meetings are held regularly to regulate all aspects of the project and enable successful integration of JF’s charitable aims, legal responsibilities, and available resources. As part of the pilot, 122 facilitators worldwide have completed an orientation. Data from these pilot trainings is being evaluated to help refine the programme. An online learning portal is under construction which will enable access to learning resources for the project.
- **JF online learning website**
This new website is under development to support an online learning community, giving members access to adapted learning materials from VIHASA, as well as other JF educational resources. It will have a subscription-based login for those who have shared an interest in additional JF educational activities. The platform will also have the capacity to receive donations. The digital version of the VIHASA manual will be moved to this platform and linked directly with VIHASA Global training.
- **Community Group**
- The JF Community is a network of approximately 70 UK based healthcare professionals with an interest in spirituality. Members meet at least twice a year to explore service projects and strengthen their capacity to initiate local activities that align with the Foundation’s aims and objectives. These gatherings also provide space to develop educational materials that support the wider healthcare community. Meetings are held in person, with occasional in-person retreats.

During this period, two meetings were hosted at Global Cooperation House on 5th April & 20th Sept 2025 under the theme “Valuing Values.” Facilitators guided participants in examining their personal values and - how these shape decision making. The sessions incorporated meditation, reflection, discussion, listening, creativity, appreciation, movement, and play.
Conversations explored topics such as “The Values Gap” and “Moral Distress.” Participants reflected on moments when their personal values felt misaligned with workplace expectations, noting impacts such as diminished integrity and feelings of overwhelm. They also considered how values influence behaviour, how to align values with personal aims and goals, and how to make “living my values” a natural part of daily life.
- **Stillness in the Storm Podcasts**
Sarah Eagger and Jan Alcoe, authors of Stillness in the Storm, are planning to record a series of audio podcasts based on the book. Given the current state of the world and the many challenges people are facing, they feel this is the right moment to offer additional support and guidance.
Each episode will present the key themes of the book through a conversation between the two authors, followed by a guided meditation. The podcasts will also include practical activities to help listeners apply the ideas in daily life, along with a few quick “rescue remedies” and positive affirmations.
The series will consist of nine podcasts, each one exploring one of the seven tools for coping with fear and uncertainty, plus an introductory episode explaining the context and approach, and a concluding episode on building resilience.
A pilot episode was recorded in July 2025 and shared with selected individuals for feedback. Following the feedback received, Sarah and Jan are now moving ahead with recording the full series.
- **Silence Retreats at Quiet View in Kent**
These in person one-day silence retreats organised by the Kent Group of JF for those working in Health & Social Care continue to draw strong interest. Held at The Quiet View - set in peaceful countryside just outside Canterbury - these retreats offer a restorative space away from the demands of caring for others, providing time to spiritually recharge and reconnect with oneself in healing, transformational silence. The retreats are led by:

- • Dr Julia Ronder – Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Certified Mindful Self Compassion Teacher, and Janki Foundation Coordinator (Kent)
- Rev Lizzie Hopthrow – Director of The Quiet View
- Lorraine Millard – Psychotherapist, Supervisor, and Mindfulness Instructor
- Nina Dhiman – Clinical Psychologist, Mindfulness & Yoga Teacher
In 2025, four Rest & Restore retreats took place in January, May, July, and October. Each retreat provided an opportunity to pause, reflect, come into quiet, and rediscover one’s own wisdom and truth.
- **JF led event for senior healthcare staff, Carmarthenshire, Wales**
- A Janki Foundation led training event titled _Inner Strength for Outer Impact: Self-Preservation in Our Current NHS_ was held on 18 October 2025 at the John Burns Foundation in Kidwelly, West Wales. Organised at the request of some members of the Hywel Dda University Health Board, the session focused on meditation, thought management, communication skills, and themes of care, self-support, and empowerment. Several medical consultants and clinical leads attended the event, with the day being hosted by the two consultants in old age medicine.
The Janki Foundation team led by Dr Kala Mistry—facilitated reflective and interactive activities and introduced JF resources. The event was very well received, leading to requests for additional sessions for Medical Associate Professionals in Wales.
- **Happidote**
This free mobile meditation app designed by JF for health and social care professionals, and caregivers remains a valued resource for practitioners worldwide. It offers an easy way to access practical advice through simple, guided meditations aimed at calming the mind and alleviating work - related stress. Ten common healthcare scenarios have been identified, each accompanied by a short commentary offering a supportive response.

The app underwent an upgrade and was relaunched in March 2025, accompanied by a mailout to the JF database announcing its availability and encouraging users to share it with colleagues and submit ratings or reviews on the App Store or the JF website.
- **Meetings with developers of the Yperea app**
- JF has collaborated with the developers of Yperea, an app designed to create a digital environment for group meditation and prayer. This tool was recommended to the Janki Foundation as a valuable resource for professionals supporting patients, families, and clients.
- After several online consultations with the development team, members of JF were invited to download the application and participate in a meditation circle. The group convened online weekly for ten-minute sessions over a one-month period and subsequently provided structured feedback to the developers. The development team is now incorporating this feedback to refine and test a new version of the platform. The Janki Foundation will also participate in evaluating the updated application.
- Upon completion, further information regarding the app will be made available in the Resources section of the Janki Foundation website.
- **International Compassion Community**
- JF, in collaboration with the Dutch foundation BFC Compassionate Care and Mindful Medicine, continue to offer live online meditation sessions in English on Thursday evenings. These sessions have been running for more than five years. Originally intended for healthcare professionals, but since January 2024 access to these meditations has been widened to all those who care. Some members of the JF team lead the English meditations on a regular basis. Participation is free, with an option to donate to JF after the JF led meditations. BFC CCMM has also partnered with the Global Compassion Coalition increasing JF’s outreach potential.
- **Publications**
- The Foundation continues to work with Brahma Kumaris Information Services (BKIS) to market and distribute all JF publications. These resources are available on the Foundation’s website as well as on Inspired Stillness, the BKIS online store. Sales placed through the JF website are redirected to Inspired Stillness for processing and distribution.
All three books in the 7 Tools series: Lifting Your Spirits, Heart of Wellbeing, and Stillness in the Storm are available in both print and eBook formats. Audiobook versions of Lifting Your Spirits and Stillness in the Storm can be found on Google Play, and the print edition of Lifting Your Spirits is also available on Amazon.
- **Booklets supporting healing and well-being**
- These are available online; printed copies are also available on request. A brief information flyer about the work of the Foundation is also available online.
- Some **health trusts in the UK continue to use or integrate JF materials** in their training, study days and retreats, particularly South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Trust.
- **Ad-hoc presentations and workshops continue** online at conferences, exhibitions and networking with organisations dealing with mental health, etc.
- **Foundation’s website**
- The website continues to run smoothly, with most updates now managed in house by Preety Bhudia. Additional ongoing technical support is provided by HealthHosts. Details of forthcoming events, news, videos of past lectures, publication updates, and other resources are all available on the site. There are active discussions about repurposing and reorganising website content to make it more user - friendly and easier to navigate, with information presented in clear, bite - sized formats. To reach a broader audience and make the content more accessible and engaging, the website has also offered a Spanish translation option since July 2025.
- **Social media**
The Foundation continues to build its social media presence on Instagram and Facebook. It uses these platforms to share details about any upcoming events and activities, JF resources and other information. The social media review held in 2023 as a database survey has continued to inform the plans for events and outreach programmes.

- **GDPR** Priority areas were implemented from 25[th] May 2018. A data management system is in place in line with GDPR. Our systems and processes are reviewed on a periodic basis. Kalpna Thobani coordinates these reviews.
- **Administration**
- The small administration team of volunteers, namely Arun Gupta, Charoo Maroo, Kalpna Gami, Kalpna Thobhani, Pankaj Kendall, Preety Bhudia, Ruchi Garg and Viraj Patel, continue to provide administrative support virtually for managing the day-to-day running of the office and provides support for the Foundation’s events and activities. Most meetings take place online.
- **Appointment of new Patrons and Advisors** During this period the Foundation was honoured to appoint Professor Michael West, Professor Sheo Tibrewal, Cllr Ketan Seth as Patrons of JF; Julia Ronder and Professor Sumantra Ray as Medical Advisors; and Vishnu Appadu as Learning & Development Advisor. JF deeply appreciates their support and guidance.
- **Northern Group**
- The Northern group usually meets to discuss service projects supporting health and social care practitioners in their local area. During this time, they did not have any meetings.
## **Financial Review**
During the year, the charity raised £102,803 (2024: £123,199) from donations, legacies and similar incoming resources. We are pleased to report that our financial support commitment to Global Hospital and Research Centre was fulfilled. Income from information and education programmes totalled £115 (2024: £84) in the year.
The charity has £383,317 (2024: £340,825) of total cash funds carried forward at the end of the year.
## **Reserves Policy**
In accordance with the guidelines of the Charity Commission, we have a reserves policy in place.
## **Plans for the Future**
- **J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre** The charity is to continue providing financial support for the existing projects carried out by the hospital and endorse the overall holistic approach taken to healthcare since the hospital was set up.
- **Organising educational conferences, seminars, lectures, workshops and retreats: 2025 and ongoing** `o` JF Annual Event - _**Leading with Purpose and Care** at_ Global Cooperation House, London. 2.30pm – 5.30pm, Saturday 6th December 2025.
- Continue creating a series of podcasts around coping with fear and uncertainty based on **‘Stillness in the Storm’** .
- Further the Foundation’s work by collaborating with a Dutch foundation in providing teachers for Thursday evening English-speaking meditations sessions for healthcare workers.
- **Values in Healthcare:**
- Thousands of people have benefited from the programme around the world since it was launched in 2004. VIHASA is offered online on the Foundation’s website as a free resource for anyone to use as they wish. The printed pack continues to be offered at a reduced price.
- The charity continues to be open to opportunities and discussions for the programme to be used by individuals or organisations as part of an overall strategy for integrating spirituality in their organisation, as well as exploring how it could be integrated into healthcare professionals’ education.

## **Note 1: Accounting policies**
The principal accounting policies, all of which have been applied consistently throughout the year, are set out below. Where a change of accounting policy or treatment has occurred, the prior year’s figures have been adjusted to reflect the new treatment.
## **(a) Basis of preparation**
These accounts have been prepared on a receipts and payment basis.
## **(b) Fund Accounting**
Unrestricted funds are general funds that are available for use at the trustees' discretion in furtherance of the objectives of the charity.
Restricted funds are those donated for use in a particular area for specific purposes, the use of which is restricted to that area or purpose.
## **(c) Foreign currencies**
Transaction in foreign currency is recognised at the exchange rate at the date of the transaction.

The **management and administration expenditure** has been split between the main objectives of the charity based on the income received for these activities. The basis agreed upon by the Trustees was to split administrative expenditure in the ratio of 10:5:8:7:30:40 for Grants & Donations, Values in Healthcare, Lifting Your Spirits, Well Being, Stillness in Storm and General Administration respectively.
