We empower people out of poverty, hunger, illness and hardship
A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN
Dear Colleagues,
2020 was a year that will not be forgotten. Words like ‘quarantine’, ‘social- distancing’ and ‘lockdown’ have crept into our everyday conversations, leaving a bad taste in our mouths. But despite what each and every one of has been through, we have learnt about what really matters to us, appreciated the little things in life and thought more about others.
It hasn’t been easy. The pandemic has broken families, pushed people into poverty and magnified emotional issues. Not surprisingly, the demand for our services has increased by 70% and we have been bogged down by work in our attempt to accommodate every request to the best of our ability. We have had to adjust our processes and make hard decisions, responding to desperate pleas from the elderly, orphaned, unemployed and sick.
The loss of one of our founding Trustees, Mr Friedman ל"זצ in March 2020, has had a major impact on ZSV and across the community. As an influential member of the community and Trustee for over 20 years, Mr Friedman’s heart of gold and listening ear was a beacon for hundreds of struggling individuals. We hope to emulate his ways and continue his legacy under the guidance of his son, Mr Joel Friedman, and our expanded advisory group.
ZSV has been fortunate to witness the incredible generosity of our donors and funders, through both financial donations and encouraging messages of good wishes. Of course, our work may only be a drop in the ocean compared to the unfathomable challenges that COVID has brought globally. But it is a drop nonetheless. And the support you have shown us has made a world of difference to our beneficiaries.
So thank you colleagues, friends, volunteers and donors- we could not have done without you!
The question is, where do we go from here?
Looking ahead, it is time to revise our strategies, reassess our recipients, set new goals and adapt to a postpandemic world. We aim to wean beneficiaries off ZSV’s support and spread an awareness of welfare services through the development of referral pathways and beneficiary assessment forms. As we evaluate the best way to proceed, we are putting a particular emphasis on the health and safety of our members and the due diligence of our charity.
Finally, I would like to conclude with a positive message, in summary of 2020 and in anticipation for 2021:
When you think you're at the end of something, you're at the beginning of something else.
The world will not emerge from the COVID-19 crisis the same as it entered. Yet as we start to look beyond, I am optimistic. I have been amazed and humbled by our wonderful donor family who have redoubled their efforts to support us and I am confident that we can all emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before.
We will not only return to a new normal; we will create a better normal.
I invite you to learn more about our work and join us in improving the lives of struggling families in our community.
With best wishes for a brighter future,
Aba Weinberger Chair of ZSV Trust

Our mission

We empower people out of poverty, hunger, illness and hardship.
Our key goals:
Hunger Relief:
Reduce food insecurity through Food Lifeline’s Kosher food parcels.
Poverty Relief:
Provide financial assistance for low-income families, and struggling individuals.
Hardship Relief:
Offer guidance, resources and practical support for those undergoing a crisis.

trainers, ZSV takes a proactive approach to campaign and contribute towards the distribution of clothing parcels.
Food Lifeline:
Families struggling with food poverty are at a higher risk of physical and mental health issues, often experiencing increased levels of stress and family tension.
Healthcare Assistance:
Where NHS has failed, people suffering from health issues will often face exorbitant medical bills. ZSV assists sick patients and their families, by evaluating their needs and partnering with local healthcare agencies to determine the best way to support them. This may include referrals or contributions towards their expenses as they undergo treatment.
Food Lifeline is the largest project of ZSV trust, providing Kosher food parcels to thousands of low-income families, through the following programmes:
-
•Passover Distribution
-
•High Holy Days Distribution
Youth Provision:
- •Weekly Shabbat parcels
Children and teenagers need a healthy outlet from schoolwork, within a culturally appropriate environment. However many families from disadvantaged backgrounds cannot afford these costs. ZSV subsidises activities that will make a difference to children’s academic performance, channelling their funds to after-school-clubs and youth programmes, in line with recommendations from schools and social workers.
-
•COVID Campaign
-
•Family Food Vouchers
Since COVID, the demand on our services has increased by 70% and we are a frontline service provider, assisting the elderly, sick, widowed, orphaned and unemployed through food parcels, vouchers, errand undertaking and volunteer support
Housing Repairs & Utilities:
Emergency Crisis Fund:
When families are faced with emergency housing repairs, the financial repercussions can be enormous and the family’s health may be at risk. ZSV steps in by assessing each individual situation and contributing accordinglytowards repairs, utility bills or emergency renovations.
Families with a single parent or unemployed breadwinner struggle to pay their bills when hit with an unexpected crisis. After careful assessment, we provide grants to families with outstanding expenses, subject to them accessing further guidance in financial matters. Our aim is to help them get back on their feet without being pulled further into debt.
Referral Service:
Sometimes beneficiaries require additional support beyond food, clothing and grants. Through our trained volunteers, we refer 100 callers per week to suitable organisations that will address their needs. These include social welfare organisations, counselling services, youth clubs, children’s centres, elderly care programmes and employment agencies.
Building a Home Fund:
Some newlyweds from low-income backgrounds struggle with the overwhelming financial burden of setting up a home.
ZSV secures their beginnings by soliciting funds from the community to support these young couples with rent, furnishing and household goods.
Counselling Service:
Poor mental health, stress and family tension is a growing problem and financial support alone is often not enough. Alongside the local welfare agencies and social workers, ZSV recommends qualified therapists and counsellors who offer subsidised sessions, advice and guidance to those in distress who cannot afford it.
Clothing & Shoes Drive:
Large families with young children may struggle with the choice between a new pair of shoes or food on the table. From winter coats and baby clothes to school shoes and

COVID-19 RESPONSE
COVID-19 has disrupted lives, straining finances and threatening stability. As a frontline service provider, we have experienced an increased surge of demand and we cannot turn a blind eye to the pleas for help.
Since the outbreak, we have responded to the needs of nearly 20,000 COVID victims, including school-aged children, the elderly, vulnerable, bereaved and unemployed. Our services now comprise of a telephone helpline, food parcels and vouchers, errands for the homebound, children’s packages, medical assistance and volunteer support.
We aim to give our recipients the headspace and time to focus on family matters and underlying issues, allowing many to secure lucrative employment within the timeframe of our support.
ZSV is committed to the safety of all those involved. We offer door-to-door delivery services, rather than arranging a central pickup location for our distributions, to avoid unnecessary exposure of our beneficiaries. Our volunteers are required to wear PPE, maintain social distancing, work in small bubbles and adhere to all government guidance, under the supervision of our Safeguarding Officer.

Structure, Governance and Management
The trustees are involved in the day to day running of the charity and are responsible for the income whether by way of donations and grants.
Investments Powers, Policy and Performance
The charity places surplus funds in a bank deposit account. It is the view of the trustees that due to the rapid turnover of funds it would not be prudent to invest in any other type of account as the charity requires immediate access to its funds.
Governance and Internal Control
The power of appointing new or additional Trustees hereof or removing Trustees is vested in the persons who are for the time being the trustees.
Risk Management
The trustees have identified and reviewed the major risks to which the Trust is exposed, in particular those related to the operations and finance of the Trust, and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate those risks.
Public Benefit
The Trustees confirm their compliance with their duty to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission when reviewing the Charity's aims and objectives and in planning future activities.
Financial Review
The charity was able to continue its activities to the satisfaction of the trustees.
Reserves
The charity has a policy of ensuring that at all times it has sufficient funds to support its activities for at least 1 month. Reserves at the Balance Sheet date were above this level and the Trustees are confident that the reserves can be increased further if necessary.
The reserves as reported are low but as the Charity has minimal overheads and low fixed costs, the Trustees feel that it would not be sensible or justifiable to withhold support from potential beneficiaries just in order to maintain an arbitrary level of reserves.
In order to ensure that there are always sufficient funds available to meet needs which fluctuate from time to time, the Charity has obtained the support of 10 philanthropists who are committed to the Charity and have agreed to support the Charity financially
should it be unable at any time to meet its financial commitments. These total £100,000 and would be available for drawdown should it prove necessary.
Since these offers were made in 1999, it has never been necessary to call upon these but they remain available should the need arise.
Trustees' Responsibilities Statement
The trustees are responsible for preparing the trustees' report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).
The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the charity trustees to prepare financial statements for each year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources, of the charity for that period.
In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:
-
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
-
observe the methods and principles in the applicable Charities SORP;
-
make judgments and accounting estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
-
state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;
-
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.
The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that are sufficient to show and explain the charity's transactions and disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the applicable Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations, and the provisions of the Trust Deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities
The trustees' annual report was approved on 19 July 2021 and signed on behalf of the board of trustees by:
