Annual General Meeting – 19 July 2023
Firstly, welcome to the Calne Link AGM. A reminder re housekeeping issues: please ensure that you have signed the Attendance List on the table by the door. The Ladies and Disabled toilets are downstairs and the Gents toilet is upstairs and can be reached by the lift or stairs; both are at the front of the building. Fire exits are as shown. If there is a fire alarm, the assembly point is in front of the Lansdowne Hotel, where everyone should be checked off against the Attendance List to ensure everyone is accounted for.
Angela will give more detail in her Co-ordinators report, but we are urgently in need of additional drivers so, if you know of anyone who would be interested in volunteering for us, please let the co-ordinators know.
Up to the calendar year-end 2022 we, as volunteers, drove 66,096 miles and did 2,618 trips. We gave up 7,370 hours of our time. This is a 52% increase in miles; a 66% increase in the number of trips and a 24% increase in hours. This implies that we did many more, shorter trips, witnessed by the number of trips to Marden House through the week and to the Re-connecting group on a Tuesday.
We have attended local groups: the Calne Health & Social Care Forum, the Voices & Dementia group and Wessex Community Action Zoom calls, which cover a variety of topics and involve many voluntary organisations. We had a display in the Town Hall during the Duck Race in May.
Following a generous donation from a benefactor, we were able to participate in the ‘Warm Spaces’ initiative, offering transport to the Methodist Church, the Baptist Church and Church House free of charge to participants.
I have attended the Wiltshire Link Chairs’ meetings, organised by Community First.
We launched a new website in June and our thanks go to Peter Deavin for leading the initiative and to Angela, Derek, Tricia and Myra for their help.
We hope to increase our presence in the technology arena and to have stalls at local events in an attempt to recruit more volunteers – and are looking for someone to fill this role. Mary Gray does a sterling job distributing posters and flyers around the town but, if you think you could take on this wider, additional publicity role, please let me know.
We also launched a WhatsApp group for any interested drivers, to give live reports of incidents which may impact other volunteers. If you wish to be part of that group, please let me know so that I can add your mobile number.
Fleeces and polo shirts, showing the Calne Link logo and phone number, will soon be available to all volunteers who requested them.
I am happy to organise an Annual Dinner again for any interested volunteers and partners. I have put a form at the back of the hall for anyone interested and for suggestions for a venue. The date would be Saturday 14 October. Also, if you or your partner are vegetarian or vegan, please put a V or a VG against your name.
David Evans, a founder member of the Calne & District Link Scheme, passed away in April this year. David had the vision and was instrumental in setting up the scheme in August 1997, with others, based on a similar scheme operating in Corsham at the time. David spent a lot of time and energy completing the relevant paperwork, setting up the bank account, working out how the scheme would function, etc. As well as the Calne Link Scheme, many of you will have known David for his involvement in many organisations, both locally and, more widely, in Wiltshire.
The Committee and I give our thanks, as always, to the commitment of all our volunteers in making it possible to continue our amazing service. I would personally like to thank the committee and, especially, our dedicated co-ordinators, who do a great job and without whom we could not function.
