CIRPwasfoundedin1951withtheaimtoaddressscientifically,throughinternationalco-operation,issuesrelatedto modern
productionscienceandtechnology.TheInternationalAcademyforProductionEngineeringtakesitsabbreviatednamefrom the
Frenchacronymof(CIRP)and includessome600 worldwidemembers.The numberof membersis intentionallykept limited,so  as
to facilitate informal scientific information exchange and personal contacts.
```

CIRP has some 180 Fellowsand HonoraryFellowswho are internationallyrecognizedscientistselectedto be CIRP membersfor  life.
DuetothelimitednumberofCIRPFellows,theelectionofaFellowisalengthy,rigorousprocessensuringthehighest possible
academic standards.
```

CIRPincludessome150Associatememberswellknownscientists,withhighpotential,electedtypicallyfora periodofthree years
withthepossibilityofrenewal.AnumberofAssociatememberseventuallybecomeFellows.SomeAssociatemembersmay also
belong to fields related to Manufacturing.

CIRP,althoughanacademicorganization,encouragestheparticipationofindustryinitsactivities.Therearesome170 Corporate
memberswhofollowthe researchworkof the academicmembersof CIRP,and veryoftencontributeto the information exchange
withinCIRPbypresentingtheirviewsonindustrialneedsandperspectives.YoungResearchAffiliatesandsomeInvited members,
particularly from countries not yet involved in CIRP, are also included in the CIRP community.

WhilstCIRPisaninternationalorganization,theCIRP(UK)communityconsistsof26Fellows,6Associatemembers,10 Research
Affiliatemembersand7Corporatemembers,whoarealsomembersofCIRP(U.K.)Ltd.,whichisasisterassociationinthe UK.
EveryyearinthemonthofMay,CIRP(UK)CharitableTrusttogetherwithCIRP(U.K)Ltd.organizesameetingforoneanda half
days and at this meeting,all the Fellows,Associatemembers,ResearchAffiliatesand Corporatemembersare invitedtogether with
young aspiring researchers from academia and industry. At this meeting, the young researchers and invited industrialists:
```

- `(i) learn about the activities of CIRP;` 

- `(ii) present their research, and` 

- `(iii) discuss the latest developments in manufacturing.`

TheyoungresearchersareencouragedtosubmitapaperontheirresearchandsubsequentlybecomemembersofCIRP. Only
high-qualitypapersforacceptedforpresentationattheGeneralAssemblybecausethecompetitionisfierce.Onceapaper is
acceptedby a youngresearcherwhois nota memberofCIRPorby a memberofCIRPwhohasnofunding,theTRUSTwillstep in
and support them financially.
```

This year the CIRP (UK) meeting was scheduledto be held at the Universityof Bristolbut becauseof Covid-19,it was decided that it
wouldbesafertoconducttheconferenceonlineusingZoom,whichmeantthatnoexpenseswereincurred.These meetings,
organizedand supportedby the TRUST,have been extremelysuccessfulas the size of the UK CIRP communityhas nearly doubled in
size over the last ten years.
```

Onceevery10to15years,theTrustorganizestheCIRPGeneralAssembly,whichisaone-weeklongevent.Thefirsthalfof the
Assemblyis devotedto CIRPmembers,or researchersaspiringto becomemembers,presentingtheirresearchpaperswhilstin the
secondhalf,thereareshortpresentationsoncurrenton-goingworkfrommembersand/orinvitedguests,discussions about
collaborative work and keynote lectures.
```

In August2019,the Trustorganizedthe GeneralAssemblyin Birminghamat the InternationalConventionCentre.Sincethere were
about600delegatesfrom30differentcountriesattendingthisevent,itwouldhavedifficultfortheTrustanditsmembers to
organisethiseventandhenceitwassubcontractedtotheConferCareTeamatTheUniversityofManchester.Inadditionto the
educationalbenefitsthiseventbringstothestudents,academiaandpractisingmanufacturingengineers,itcreatesasocial event
which is of immense benefit to the local community without any cost to the Exchequer.
```
