Annual Report for the year ended 31[st] August 2020

The Association known as The Friends of St Helen’s School, Brewhouse Hill, Wheathampstead, Herts AL4 8AN is a registered Charity (No 1063011), governed by its constitution dated 12[th] March 2012 and is administered by a management committee.

b) Engage in activities which support the School and advance the education of the pupils attending it.

Activities during the year

Net proceeds from our fund raising events amount to £19,062. By far our largest fundraiser, the school ball, held every other year, raised £14,269. Events that were able to take place before the pandemic were successful, with the Quiz Night and John Bunyan Fun Day raising around £1,500 each net, and the Christmas activities (grotto and cards) bringing in £600. It is recognised that the grotto is not a big fundraiser after expenses, but this is a key event that generates excitement and enjoyment for our school pupils.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted fundraising efforts from March 2020 onwards, including the cancellation of the Summer Fair (which usually raises around £3,000) and the annual Easter egg hunt. Smaller sums than anticipated were raised from our ‘regular’ events such as cake sales, cinemas and discos as these were not able to take place through the second half of the year.

The most significant expenditure has been the funding of the outdoor reception and playground refurbishments, costing just over £25,000. As with previous years, Friends also funded the cost of the coaches for the school journeys (£3,500) and 1/3 of the cost of the coach to take year 4 children to their swimming lessons (£1,982).

Future Activities

Friends are committed to boosting fundraising efforts during 2020/21, with new events designed to work with COVID-19 restrictions in place. It is recognised that events will need to be diversified to become virtual or outdoor (outside the school grounds). Events planned for the new school year include a virtual race, village-based Easter egg trail, and village-wide scarecrow festival.

Friends are currently considering future fundraising proposals and will discuss new ideas and proposals with parents and staff.

Investment and reserve policies

The Committee consider the current level of funds to be the minimum required to meet the objects of the association but are conscious of the need to maintain fundraising efforts through the pandemic to meet future expenditure.

On behalf of the Committee

Davina McCluskey – Treasurer
