Number 25 NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2022

Since our last fundraising event in Essex in 2019, our local coordinators in Norway regret very much that we have decided to postpone our Oslo event for the third year running due to the uncertain conditions prevailing in Europe. We shall keep you informed of any future gatherings.

Salah al-Quaiti, our valiant, dedicated "man on the ground" has also been affected by the ongoing situation on his home turf in Hadhramaut, as he has found his movements somewhat curtailed. After his courageous attempts to help the local population cope during the terrible trials at the height of the coronavirus epidemic in 2021, he has continued to assist needy families with food, medical aid and transport. Due to intermittent Wifi connections and electricity cuts, it has not always been possible to maintain regular contact with him. Salah is a brilliant arranger and we wish him and his family well and hope that they remain safe as the war in Yemen enters its eighth year. The original idea and concept of the charity would have been useless and got nowhere without the enormous amount of time and hard work he has put in.

Our £25/€30 life membership fee is to cover myriad administrative expenses, which are annually open to public scrutiny and audit on the UK Charity Commissioners website. FOH is entirely nonpolitical with an international membership of over 600 Friends of all ages and professions. We have three worthy patrons who have a proven track record of great affection for and knowledge of the Hadhramaut.

FOH would like to thank you all for helping Hadhramaut.

PLEASE INFORM US IF YOUR POSTAL/EMAIL ADDRESS HAS CHANGED

FONDATION BERFRED

We remain immensely grateful to the Fondation Berfred in Geneva for their magnificent donation of £47,366.49 towards the purchase of life-saving medical equipment. With the agreement of the very generous, anonymous donor, it is hoped that medical items can be purchased locally in Aden/Sanaa/Mukalla to be used by hospitals in Hadhramaut. These include anaesthesia machines, mobile surgical suction units, electro-surgical units, patient monitors, operating tables, X-ray machines and ventilator models. Salah is currently looking into the best possible options to identify those areas where the need is greatest and where the hospitals we hope to supply have a proper, functioning hospital team.

COMPLETED PROJECTS

Aid was sent in Ramadan (April) 2021 to help poor and needy families to buy basic foodstuffs. Whereas in 2020, a ration of foodstuffs for the month of Ramadan cost YR 23,000, in 2021 Salah reported the cost had gone up to YR 40,000.

The urgent need of the day, according to our man on the spot, vice-chairman Salah, is to provide sustenance to the very poor in the form of foodstuffs as they simply do not have the money to buy even the most basic groceries. As in previous years, our whole focus remains on providing essential food supplies to deprived communities throughout the Hadhramaut. Salah cannot stress enough to all Friends the prime necessity of directing all the funds at his disposal towards alleviating hunger and on providing medical aid to those Hadhrami families who cannot afford to buy medicines or seek treatment at local clinics and hospitals. More than 350 families in al-Shihr, al-Mukalla, alGhurfah, Tubala, al-Qatn, Ghail BaWazir, Tarim and Seiyun have been helped in the past year with basic food items (rice, flour, oil, sugar, tea, tuna cans, tomato paste, pasta). Medical aid was distributed to more than 30 individuals in Wadi Hadhramaut and along the coastal areas in the form of medicines and financial aid towards surgeries for children and the elderly. Numerous university students from needy families have been helped with transportation costs from their lodgings to their campus. 23 midwives at al-Qatn hospital have been provided with shoes and uniforms.

Al-Zahra School, al Qatn, Wadi Hadhramaut

Text books were supplied to the school to be distributed amongst the pupils.

Sports, Youth and Culture Club, al Qatn, Wadi Hadhramaut

The local population is highly appreciative of the 3 rooms built by FOH last year. These are being used for administration, meetings, exhibitions, tournaments and for hosting visiting teams. The cafeteria, storeroom and generator room are also proving to be highly valued as well as the 5 lavatories.

Salah is looking forward to constructing a large, fully equipped gymnasium, which can be used for bodybuilding, martial arts, general fitness, boxing, wrestling and exercise.

LEGACIES AND WILLS

Those thinking about leaving a legacy to FOH can check our bona fides by consulting the website of the Charity Commission of England & Wales: www.charitycommission.gov.uk . We have been registered with the Commissioners under Charity Number 1062560 since May 1997. If you are planning your will (or making additions to an existing one) we cannot over emphasise how grateful we, and the poorest people of Hadhramaut would be for a bequest from you. If there is a particular project you are interested in supporting, or specific terms and conditions you would like to make, please contact the treasurer at our registered address, or ask your solicitor to do so.

NEWS OF THE VICE-CHAIRMAN

5.5.2021 Heavy rains caused flash floods in Hadhramaut, killing 5 and displacing 80 families. “People have never seen such heavy flooding for the last three decades” according to a resident of the Aideed district in Tarim, which was the worst affected. Severe damage was caused to houses which had been built irresponsibly on or near the watercourses, thereby restricting the flow of the flood waters. Salah was able to distribute cash, food and mattresses to 20 families in the stricken areas whose homes were destroyed. The joy on the faces of these destitute families was palpable as they rushed out to receive donations from Salah.

Salah distributed food items to more than 200 families during Ramadan 2021. He also visited the family of master-builder Karamah Obaid twice, giving them assistance as well as the family of the 3 blind sisters in Adaan near Qaudha.

Ali Salah al-Qu’aiti sent FOH this message from Yehya Madfa’, a member of the al-Qatn Youth Club: “Our club has been blessed with its Director Salah al-Qu’aiti. We are privileged to have him as our leader; such a respected and educated individual who has taken the club to new heights and worked tirelessly to raise funds and support from local and national entities. Salah and the Captain of the handball team Daweel Muhammad make al-Qatn proud”.

Haneen Jassem, an 11 year old girl from Shihr was diagnosed with a brain tumour in Cairo in July 2021. FOH sent funds towards her surgery costs.

Salah is pleased that apart from his two older stalwart sons, Muhammed, now working in the General Surgery Department at al-Kuwait University Hospital, Sanaa and Ali, who runs his pharmacy in al-Qatn, his third son Ghalib, who has graduated in Law from Hadhramaut University, is helping him a lot with matters relating to FOH.

NEWS FROM NETHERLANDS BRANCH

Alex Ingrams (LC Netherlands) would like to emphasise that the shelters which FOH have been building in various schools are to be used for all kinds of recreational activities.

I started as the Netherlands LC last year. It's been wonderful to be more involved in the work of FOH although I have a difficult time meeting with other supporters given all the social restrictions at the moment. The group of Friends here is a small contingent and as a result of the pandemic there have been few opportunities to meet or share our experiences of the Hadhramaut. However, I’m looking forward to making new connections in the coming months. Are there any readers of this newsletter out there who can recommend Yemen or Middle East interest groups, organisations, clubs, etc that I can explore in the Netherlands? Please contact me: alex.ingrams@gmail.com

NEWS FROM NORWEGIAN BRANCH

Sverre Driveklepp and Nina Kneppen regret deeply that the Oslo event they have been planning for since 2020 has to be postponed yet again. They remain ever optimistic that once the unfolding situation in Europe stabilises, they will be able to host a new invitation to Norway: sverre.driveklepp@gmail.com

We congratulate Sverre and Nina on the birth of their second grandchild Edvard, born 3rd October 2021.

NEWS FROM USA BRANCH

John Mulholland (jmulholland45@aol.com) has made his old friend Ambassador Jonathan Addleton , who served in Yemen as USAID Programme Officer, a member of FOH. In November 2020, Jonathan was appointed Rector of Forman Christian College University, Lahore, Pakistan, the fraternal institution of Kinnaird College for Women, the alma mater of our treasurer! He also alerted us to the fact that the recent Zanzibari Nobel Prize winner for Literature Abdulrazak Gurnah’s ancestors hail from Wadi Doan, Hadhramaut!

John is still riding his bike 200 miles a week whilst looking after FOH interests in the States. He has been able to visit cousins in Peru. Doubtless, he shall soon recruit FOH's first Peruvian Friend. He is very keen to host a fundraising event in the USA.

Many thanks to John for highlighting our work by voluntarily writing an article Educational Development in Hadhramaut for his friend Danilo Piaggesi’s organisation K4D ( Knowledge for Development ) for inclusion in the book Cases on Applying Knowledge Economy Principles for Economic Growth in Developing Nations in order to give “a greater unique exposure to FOH highlighting the positive impact of our projects on the citizens of Hadhramaut, and at the same time, an objective basis for measuring our progress”. An abstract and introduction from the article follows.

Educational Development in Hadhramaut

Abstract

This chapter will define the goals and describe the methods of Friends of Hadhramaut's (FOH), a UK-based charitable trust, efforts to nurture the seeds that will evolve to embrace the goals of the knowledge economy (KE) in Hadhramaut. As a charitable organization, FOH focuses its support on the health/medical and educational sectors of society. FOH has made additional strides to focus on girls' education and on those who have what we call “learning disabilities,” a label which covers a broad range of dysfunctions. This chapter will focus on FOH's methodology and achievements in the educational sector.

Introduction

The reader will likely ask, “Where is Hadhramaut”? As shown in the map (Friends of Hadhramaut Newsletter, 2021) below, it is the largest of Yemen’s 17 provinces (also frequently referred to as “Governorates”) and found on the south coast of the Arabian Peninsula on the Indian Ocean as shown in Figure 1.

NEWS FROM GERMAN BRANCH

The Corona-Pandemic has hit us in Germany no more and no less than in most other countries. This means that our work is very much curtailed. We could not, unfortunately, recruit any new members and no special events took place. However, thanks to our close connections with the Deutsch-Jemenitische Gesellschaft (German-Yemeni Society) some things could be done. The Jemen-Report (No 1/2 2021), the really excellent annual magazine of the DJG, published a 3-page article written by me, describing our current projects and how the coronavirus has hit Hadhramaut; in some places the fear of Covid-19 being eclipsed by hunger and the shortage of clean drinking water. I can provide copies of the journal to those interested.

The DJG regularly mentions FOH on its website together with other societies like the British, Austrian, Polish-Yemeni Societies and the Friends of Soqotra. Do take a look at the DJG's homepage. On Facebook there are quite a lot of interesting articles in English and a really hilarious Hadhrami version of "jingle bells" which makes you want to sing it all year round! https://www.facebook.com/DeutschJemenitischeGesellschaft

Some of us took part digitally in a number of conferences and lectures organised by the DJG. The DJG and its magazine celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2020. For obvious reasons, this event was postponed to August 2021 and took place in the "Arabian House" in Nuremberg together with the Vernissage of a Yemen-exhibition. On this occasion the DJG announced its intention of getting some of the Yemeni-Societies and individuals linked closer together and to start an archive with culturally important illustrations of Yemen.

Dear Amici, I'd like to send my personal season's greetings to all Amici, and I hope we will be able to meet at some point in the not-too-distant future. Anthony McLauchlan wrote to the Daily Telegraph in 2021 from East Sussex: “Over 60 years ago, as a serving RAF officer in Arabia, I worked with a variety of local units raised under the Raj: Aden Protectorate Levies, Federal National Guard, the Hadhrami Bedouin Legion - then all under British command, now long fallen into history”.

Harub Mohammed al-Kharusi , whose lineage is firmly rooted in the Sultanate of Oman, has written a biography of his father, Mohammed bin Said bin Abdullah al-Kharusi, born in Zanzibar, based on their close relationship. Harub is the seventh child amongst fifteen siblings. In chapter 3, he discusses his father's work as Governor of Hajr province ( liwa ) and then Shibam province in Hadhramaut where he served for 22 years until his departure in 1960. Various Photographs of the Mukalla Gateway Built Circa 1921

This historic gateway, built during the reign of Sultan Ghalib bin Awadh al-Quaiti I (1911-1926), was sadly destroyed shortly after the takeover by the NLF towards the end of 1967 when Salim Ali al-Kindi became governor of Mukalla. In 1938 Alan Villiers wrote: "The camel park by the West Gate of Mukalla was always full of life, with camels from the interior bringing their burdens and waiting for new ones".

The Tomb of Sheikha Sultana Bint Ali

One of the most famous women in the history of Hadhramaut is the mystic Sheikha Sultana bint Ali. She lived in the city of Hawta near Bor where she practised and taught the sciences of sufism from a very young age, according to the historian Muhammed bin Ahmed al-Shatri. She also wrote poetry, much of which is sung in Hadhramaut today. Sheikha Sultana established her own ribaat (hospice/sufi lodge) which survived for some time after her death.
