## **Vice Chairs’ Report** 

## **Aims and Organisation** 

The Kalisher Trust is principally designed to offer aspiring barristers funding and other support and guidance as they seek and/or embark on pupillage; and, secondarily, for practitioners during the early stages of tenancy. This is an intensely demanding period - both financially and practically - for those seeking to establish practice at the Bar. The Trust aims to make awards and provide support and guidance to those graduates of exceptional promise but modest social and economic background, who might not otherwise be able to pursue a career path to the Bar. 

The Trust is primarily organised and run by practising members of the Judiciary and Bar on a voluntary basis, as well as members of the higher education sector and performing arts professions, together with the assistance of its volunteers. The Trust expresses its thanks for the services and time donated by these individuals. There are no employees but, since February 2016, the Trust has from time to time used part-time administrative support when necessary. 

## **Overview of Effectiveness and Achievements** 

The Trust provides training and other guidance opportunities for aspiring barristers and funds placements with partner organisations in the legal sphere. In addition, the Trust takes on educational and outreach activities – usually in secondary schools – which provide young people with an insight into the Law and its applicability to society and gives them training in advocacy skills useful in many walks of life. 

## **Events & Activities** 

**Kalisher Theatrical Evening.** Caitríona Daly's _Duck Duck Goose_ (directed by Jane Moriarty) is a powerful, nuanced and insightful look at the social impact of sexual violence. The play's protagonist becomes deeply entangled in a rape allegation after his best friend is accused of the attack. This is not a typical representation of the aftermath of sexual violence. Daly deftly demonstrates the concept of social complicity throughout this production, allowing the audience to peer behind the mirror at those caught in the centre of these events. We were fortunate enough to welcome Alison Oliver (later a star of the Saltburn film) to the production. The play was performed on 30 June 2023, staged in Middle Temple Hall, with the kind permission of Middle Temple. As the Trust’s theatrical events had been interrupted by the pandemic, this was a welcome return, serving to raise money for the Trust and further its aims and objectives. 

**Mock Interview Programme.** A programme of virtual mock pupillage interviews was organised for the last two weeks of February and the first two weeks of March, thanks to the efforts of Joanna Doherty, Emma Fielding & James Gwatkin, and all those who volunteered to deliver the interviews. 42 people were offered mock interviews and all those who applied received a mock interview slot.

**Second-hand clothing fair** . This was aimed at supporting pupils and aspiring pupils in need of appropriate clothing for interviews, mini-pupillages and other work placements. The fair received numerous donations of suitable court clothing and attendees were able to choose, take home and keep pre-loved clothing, completely free of charge. The fair took place on 10 February 2023, which also featured a pop-up store from tailors Ivy & Normanton, who manufacture clothing specifically for women at the Bar. Thanks in no small part to Grays Inn and Lord Justice Peter Coulson the next fair is planned for March 2023. 

**The Old Bailey Apprentice** scheme returned after interruption due to the pandemic. The lead trustee is HHJ Angela Rafferty KC, working with Danielle Manson & HHJ Judy Khan KC. The 2023 Apprentices were Ceithryn Hamilton & Dorian Ravenscroft, both law undergraduates from London universities. 

Danielle Manson organised a joint event between Kalisher and her then set, Garden Court Chambers, on 28th February 2023 to showcase an interactive film on knife crime and is now working with Derby Council and the University of Derby on a VR project looking at consent and sexual assault. 

**Advocacy Training:** Rabah Kherbane (assisted by Chantel Gaber and Tommy Seagull) organised and ran an advocacy training course in June and July. Admission to the course proved to be highly competitive as the course remains popular. Candidates who were unable to find a place were promised a place on the course in the future. The course ran for seven sessions, including topics such as advocacy practice, case strategy, court presence, voice projection, values and witness handling. The final session saw an ‘Action Clinic’ held at the Central Criminal Court. 

## **Essay Prize 2023** 

The 2023 Kalisher Essay Competition, which carried a prize of £2,000, was open to all pupils undertaking a criminal pupillage. The competition was launched in January 2023 as well as in a letter to all criminal sets, inviting submissions of up to 2,000 words in answer to the following question: 

“ _The Online Safety Act 2023 is a welcome move in the battle to regulate access to and the exploitation of harmful sexual material. However, it is a step and not a leap. What do you recognise to be gaps in the regulation of such material and identify the “leap” that further law reform might achieve_ .” 

Entries were assessed by Peter Doyle KC and HHJ Judy Khan KC. At a time of financial pressure experienced by the youngest members of the criminal bar this Essay prize is aimed at supporting and inspiring the next generation of the profession. The prize was won by Lily Hines. The judging panel commented on the winning entry as follows:

“A really powerful argument that post Encrochat lessons have not been learned. Exposes the failure to impose duties of preserving evidence. A clear fight mounted against the use of “self-destruct” messaging. What was really good is the way the author had thought about reforms and had drafted legislative-like proposals for reform. A challenge to the emphasis on children’s rights to privacy v the need to protect them from themselves. Written with an edgy, journalistic style”.

## **Trust Composition** 

Sir Ralph Waller’s decision to step down as Chairman led the Trust to invite Dame Julie Maxton DBE to Chair the Board. We thank Sir Ralph for his inspirational leadership. 

Sue Freestone OBE DL stepped down from her role as the Trust’s Director of Education. The Trustees record their thanks to her for the many years of support and guidance that she has given. The Trust are delighted that John Dunston accepted an invitation to continue the Trust’s work in education. John has been Chair of the Quaker Heads’ Conference and the Association of Educational Guardians for International Students. He has been Chair of Governors of two GSA Schools and an HMC school, having in the past also been a Governor of IAPS and Society of Heads schools. He acts as Tutor for the Farmington Institute at Harris Manchester College, Oxford. John also serves as Mentor for new Heads in independent and maintained schools. 

Dr Camilla Darling stepped down as Vice Chair and accepted the Trustees’ invitation to become a member of the Senior Counsel Group. Leon Kazakos KC and Clare Wardell were invited to apply for the role of Vice Chair and, having considered their applications, the Trustees were pleased to appoint both applicants as joint Vice-Chairs. 

The Trust wishes to record its sincere thanks to all those who have spent many years in position either as trustees or volunteers, and the hard work that they have all done in pursuit of the Trust’s stated aims. 

## **Internships, Scholarships** 

We work together with our prestigious partner organisations to appoint the brightest and the best to be interns and scholars.  We value - and we have kept - the Trust’s enduring eligibility criteria of ‘exceptional promise and modest means’. 

This year’s awards featured: 

**JUSTICE** : Kareema Motala was the Gray's Inn Monique Viner Scholar 2023, and founded the Sabina Project. She began her internship on 19th October 2023 as the Kalisher Trust & JUSTICE intern. 

**CCRC** –Callum Tyrer started his Internship at the CCRC in early October 2022.  He was delighted to be make the most of having been put into contact with a mentor at the Trust.  His aspiration to start as a pupil at the Bar surely was enhanced by the Trust interns at the CCRC who had immediately preceded him.  The CCRC let the Trust know, in May 2023, that the then current Kalisher intern, Megan, had accepted an offer of a pupillage in chambers at 1 High Pavement.  The previous Kalisher intern, Jordan Warren (who finished his internship in December 2022), accepted an offer of a pupillage at St Ives.

**AMICUS:** Two of our trustees, Max Hardy and Abigail Bright, spent two evenings, together with the Director of AMICUS, interviewing the three most promising candidates.  Meg Stevenson was chosen for this internship.  The panel considered that Meg distinguished herself by giving the most thoughtful answers to the questions about the role and value of sending a UK-based lawyer to work with prisoners on death row in America.  Meg had taken practical steps to prepare for her interview and to explain to the panel the skills she had acquired and the skills she recognised that she had yet to develop.  The panel thought she was highly motivated whilst realistic. 

**UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM:** Of the three top candidates, Lauren Thomas scored the highest against the four assessment criteria set by the Trust: intellectual ability, motivation to succeed at the criminal Bar, potential as an advocate, and financial need.  The interviewing panel considered that Lauren’s application best expressed motivation to succeed at the criminal bar, indicating excellent skills as an advocate.  She clearly has strong intellectual ability and had taken many proactive steps in pursuit of a career at the Criminal Bar. 

**SENTENCING ACADEMY:** Lewis Hazeldine was offered, and accepted, a pupillage last spring, meaning that all three of Kalisher interns in the previous immediate years have received offers of pupillage at the conclusion of their internship.  Lewis worked as an intern for one working day (7.5 hours) a week for 30 weeks.  The Deputy Director of the Sentencing Academy supervised this internship. Lewis successfully produced an original piece of research that the Sentencing Academy published before the year’s pupillage interview season commenced.

## **Educational Outreach** 

- **(i) Sixth Form Public Speaking Competition.** Initial rounds were held in Creative Educational Trust (‘CET’) schools, after which, from 8 to 17 November, barristers recruited by Max Hardy spent time coaching the finalists in preparing their speeches. Each sixth former was able to spend twenty minutes remotely 1:1 with one of the barristers, working on both content and presentation. The Final took place in the Great Hall of St Mary’s Guildhall in Coventry on 7 December, at which great appreciation was expressed by both students and organisers to the Kalisher barristers involved in the training. Kate Ward, Head of Programmes at CET, provided important data regarding the backgrounds of the students who took part, including the encouraging fact that no less than thirteen of the twenty-two who took part in the competition and benefited from the coaching had special educational needs or disabilities. In the future the Trust hopes again to partner with CET who are keen to explore the possibility of an event for Year 9 pupils (age 13-14); run the Sixth Form Debating Prize again in summer 2024; and to have a session with a barrister for those thinking of a career in the law. 

- (ii) Mike Brady KC has independently and some time ago introduced a number of initiatives in the Manchester area which reflect strongly the sort of work in which Kalisher is engaged mostly in London and the south-east. Kalisher intends to form “hubs”, starting with the north-west, extending the Trust’s reach, and overcoming the natural geographical limitations (at least for in-person events) of the predominantly London base of our current Trustees. Mike Brady KC has been involved with a number of schools in the Manchester area such as Abraham Moss Community School in Crumpsall, John Henry Newman Catholic College and the Blue Coat Sixth Form in Oldham. Activities have included general chats about the law and courts, more specific discussions about careers in the law for those students who have an interest in becoming a lawyer and arranging mock trials. 

- (iii) John Dunston and Leon Kazakos KC (as South East Circuit Leader) made contact with the other Circuit Leaders to begin the process of setting up Kalisher hubs outside of London and the South East. 

- (iv) Three barristers represented the Kalisher Trust at the University of Westminster’s first Social Justice Law Fair on 29 November 2023. It was attended by over a hundred students from around the country. William England and James Meredith (pupil barrister) clearly made a great impression on the young aspiring lawyers, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, encouraging them to consider a career at the Bar. 

- (v) The Lady Chief Justice, The Right Honourable Baroness Carr of Walton-on-theHill DBE, will give the annual Kalisher Lecture on 19 March 2024.

## **Review of Financial Activities and Affairs Henrietta Paget KC, Treasurer.** 

The Trust has been successful in raising funds from a wide variety of sources including annual fundraising events, donations by individuals, sets of Barristers’ Chambers, firms of Solicitors, and, often, joint funding of Kalisher Internships with partnership organisations in respect of particular awards. 

The Trust achieved considerable success during the financial year to April 2024, raising funds from a number of private donors, both corporate and individual, through our theatrical event and our ongoing fundraising initiatives. 

## **Income** 

The Trust’s income for the financial year April 2022-2023 was £47,000 and can broadly be broken down as follows: -

## **Conclusion** 

The Trust secured full recovery following the pandemic and, with new appointees, sought to drive forward a fresh educational outreach approach in tandem with the Trust’s traditional activities. 

The Trust is very grateful to all our many donors. We would particularly like to thank those who regularly give by standing order. Regular donations, even in modest amounts, make an enormous difference and this continuing support of the Trust’s work is deeply appreciated. A great deal of gratitude is owed to our larger benefactors, whose generosity and support makes the funding of our larger projects possible. 

## **Plans for Future Development** 

The Trustees remain engaged in an ongoing review of the Trust’s core activities, monitoring the effectiveness of the Trust’s work and ensuring that the benefit of Kalisher support and funding continues to be focused on those aspiring to practice at the criminal bar. 

The fundraising successes have meant that the Trust can pursue with increased vigour its educational outreach program, as well as building on its core activities. The Trust aims to provide a greater range of support for first time (and repeat) pupillage applicants as well as driving engagement into the Old Bailey Apprentice program. We now have advocacy programs reaching wider student bodies across England and Wales.  The links with the Circuits of England and Wales will, we trust, see the gradual and prudent expansion of the Trust’s work across England and Wales. 

Due to the Trustees’ desire to spread the benefit of the charity widely as possible, the Awards Committee continues its work in generating Internships and other placements and selecting the recipients for such awards.

**Report to the trustees/** Charity Name **members of** The Kalisher Scholarship **On accounts for the year** 5 April 2024 **Charity no** 1062363 **ended (if any) Set out on pages** 1 of 2 (remember  to include the page numbers of additional sheets) I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 05/04/2023. **Responsibilties and** As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the **basis of report** accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). 

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. 

- **Independent** I have completed my examination.  I confirm that no material matters have 

- **examiner's statement** come to my attention in connection with the examination (other than that disclosed below *) which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect: 

   - the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or 

   - the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or 

   - the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
