Did you know?

1st Bedworth held its first meeting in 1910 and has been a constant presence in the Bedworth Community since that date with thousands of youngsters and adults ‘passing through our doors’.

We celebrated our ‘official’ centenary in 2014 because we didn’t register with ‘Headquarters’ until 1914 for reasons that are lost in history.

We are one of the largest Scout Groups in Warwickshire and still growing.

We currently have 31 Beavers in our Beaver Colony, 42 Cubs in 2 Cub Packs, 52 Scouts in 2 Scout Troops & 24 Explorers in our Explorer Unit.

Our youngsters are supported by 45 adults in Leader, Support or Admin roles. All of these adults are volunteers and receive no payment.

Haddon (Tuesday) Scout Troop was the very first ‘girls only’ Scout Troop in England & Wales and we believe it to be the only ‘girls only’ Troop.

All of the Adult members of 1st Bedworth have enhanced DBS (CRB) Disclosures, are first aid trained and receive additional training appropriate to their role.

During an average year:

With the exception of some large equipment purchases, all of the costs of providing the headquarters building, running weekly activities, buying badges, insurance, training leaders and so on are paid by the monthly membership fee (subs) of £10 (increased to £12 in April 2023) that each youth member pays.

Executive Committee Chairperson’s Report

The Trustees continue to provide support to 1st Bedworth Scout Group’s Leaders to enable them to focus on delivering the Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer Sections.

The Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer Sections continue to enjoy a wide range of activities and opportunities - highlights this year being two Explorer Scouts attending the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea.

Throughout the past 12 months we continued to reach out to Parents and Guardians through your Leaders to provide support to the group for which we have had a great response. This has enabled us to deliver many of our activities and camps and deliver maintenance days at the scout hut. The group are extremely grateful for your ongoing and continued support and would very much welcome any new volunteers and encourage existing volunteers to continue.

I am also pleased to report our Leaders have continued to undertake the necessary training to deliver Scouting of the highest quality. We are also investing in our Young Leaders and it’s great to see their enthusiasm and commitment to the group - Thank you.

As Scouting continues to evolve, this year has seen a change from the Scout Group Executive Committee to the Scout Group’s Trustee Board, the group will continue to provide charity governance to the group whilst the Group Leadership team will deliver the operational tasks within the group.

Finally thank you to all members for their continued engagement in the group and encourage you all to continue to feedback on the groups activities no matter how big or small to ensure the group can continue to deliver the best scouting experience possible.

Group Scout Leader’s Report

From all of us at 1st Bedworth, we would like to say thank you. Thank you to our extended Scouting family around the District and the County, thank you to our volunteers and thank you to our Youth Members and their families for the huge amount of support you have given during this challenging year for our Group. The last year has seen the passing away of Dave Woodward (Woody) who was the Group Scout Leader of 1st Bedworth for close to a gigantic 50 years. This has obviously been a difficult time for all, as he has had such a positive impact on each of our lives over the years. The values and Skills for Life that he taught and held dear will be passed on to our members long into the future. Finally, thank you, Woody.

During the course of the last year, we have successfully returned to Scouting in full swing and that could not have happened without the support of every volunteer, Youth Member and their families coming together as a team. 1st Bedworth has seen over 35 camps and extra activities over the last year, on top of our regular weekly meeting nights.

We are in a strong position going forward. We continue to be one of the most active Groups in Warwickshire. Our headquarters building known as the ‘Scout Hut’ is fit for purpose and provides a great base for our weekly meetings and for overnight activities. We are continuing to steadily develop our facilities. Over the last year we have seen the continuation of the reboarding of the exterior walls and the addition of the outdoor storage area. Thank you to everyone who has been involved with any aspect of this work.

Our members in all Sections have been working hard towards their badges and awards and a massive total of 1,128 activity badges and challenge awards, 6 Chief Scout Bronze awards, 12 Chief Scout Silver awards and 4 Chief Scout Gold awards have been awarded across the Group.

We are very proud of Jamie & Tash, who are Explorer Scouts and Young Leaders at 1st Bedworth, who have both worked incredibly hard towards attending the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea.

During 2020-2021 we suffered one of the largest losses of members we have ever had due to the COVID pandemic, however we are pleased to say that we have had another year of membership growth this year with a total of around 160 members at the last census (January 2022).

There have been many role changes within the team over the last year. We have welcomed new members onto our Group Executive Committee (Group Trustee Board) to help manage and govern the Group, welcomed new volunteers to the team and some Leaders have changed roles, taking on additional responsibilities and volunteering more time, to support and ensure the smooth running of the Group.

Since we launched our parent rota in November 2021, where we are asking that all parents/carers commit to volunteering at least 1 night every 6 months at a meeting with (or without!) their child, we have had a huge total of 82 extra volunteers on meeting nights and even more on different camps and activities. Your help and support has been invaluable to the successful running of our Group; thank you .

A huge thank you to our Young Leader Team who are active and provided superb Leadership support to our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Young Leaders are aged between fourteen and eighteen years old. They give up a lot of their time to work on their Leadership training and to play a full part as members of the Section

Page 6

Leadership teams to plan and run activities for our younger members. They receive training which includes safeguarding and First Aid to give them the tools they need for this very important role.

I would like to thank all of the volunteers of the Leadership and support teams for their dedication and hard work providing a first rate Scouting experience for all of our members. I would also like to thank all of our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers for being so enthusiastic and supporting our activities, demonstrating great teamwork and supporting each other and their Leaders. You are a credit to your parents and peers.

I’d like to say a special thank you to Alison Steptoe who has stood down as Group Chairperson. Alison joined our Group Executive Committee in January 2021 and the support she has given and her contribution during this time has helped enable Scouting at 1st Bedworth, has made a lasting impact, and has helped to keep us moving in a positive direction, so thank you.

Finally I would like to thank all of our parents and carers who, week after week, make sure our members are able to attend their activities, supporting the Leaders and for helping their child/ward get the most out of Scouting.

Andy Clarke

Group Scout Leader (Lead Volunteer)

Treasurer’s report

1st Bedworth Scout Group has had a very good year, with stable growth in our membership and a variety of adventurous activities throughout the year. The overall accounts show a cash surplus of £39,324, which is heavily influenced by very generous donations we received totalling £47,534. This does mean that, without these donations, we would have ran at a deficit however this was expected in the year for a number of reasons.

Our overall Subscriptions Received increased from £11,382 to £13,633, despite not claiming gift aid during the year. Although we did not process a gift aid claim, we have since relaunched this scheme with the intention to process our gift aid claims dating back 4 years to support the funding of the group.

I am also happy to report that last year, we maintained our subs at £10 per month for a seventh consecutive year. This was a difficult financial year as we saw rising operational costs, but as an organisation we decided to wait until we could fully understand the impacts before making any decisions around subscription fees. We therefore made a group decision to utilise surplus funds to allow us to run at a deficit last financial year, giving us more time to plan ahead for the future financial stability of the group.

Our overall expenses increased by around 11% from £37,099 to £41,344 which was mainly due to the cost of living impacting us all. This is despite the fact that the group was still taking advantage of fixed energy rates locked in 3 years prior, meaning we could foresee further increases to our running costs when the deal was to end the next financial year.

Overall 1st Bedworth has been very successful in managing expenses in line with the cost of living impact, and is in a strong position to continue doing so in the future.

Beaver Section Report

2022/2023 has been a jam packed year for the beavers, we joined the rest of the group on Warwickshire Counties - Get In Camp, which saw the beavers undertake a variety of new activities and experiences alongside 4000 other youth members,

We went on a mission to the moon and learned about how to survive out in space, with our very own moon landing and space station. Alongside camps we have learnt skills for life on our colony nights, such as money skills, pioneering, and fire lighting.

We have awarded a massive 187 badges this year, and 6 of the Beavers have completed their Chief Scout Bronze award, which is the highest award in the beaver section. A massive thank you to all the parents that we have had support us via the Parent Rota, your continued support allows us to provide such a varied programme for the beavers.

The beavers have had a great year and we look forward to the adventures that next year brings.

Cub Section Report

Over the last year we have awarded a total of 599 badges, 27 joining in awards, 22 moving on and 12 Chief Scout Silver Awards.

We are very proud of all the cubs from both packs, Hopkins and Walton and all their hard work in achieving all of these awards.

We have had some amazing camps like Get In Camp, Narrow boat, Summer Camp, Digital camp, Winter Camp and Evolution and the first ever Survival Camp for Cubs . Also two fantastic days with District activity days at Cosford Air Museum and a District Pirate day.

We would like to thank all the parents for all the help and support we have had during the year.

Also a huge well done to the cubs for all their hard work and involvement, keep up the good work and looking forward to the plans for the following years to come.

Scout Section Report

Both Haddon and Wilson have had a successful 2022-2023 period. In the time a total of 342 badges were awarded to members in the Troops, including 4 Chief Scout’s Gold Awards!

The first full year of activities after lockdown had been a success, with the scouts taking part in weekly activities which have included Bowling with the District, tye dying their own t-shirts, taking part in a litter pick along the canal, learning how to cook on gas stoves and over the fire, doing a performance of the 12 days of scouting at the Groups Carol service, and even finding the culprit in a murder mystery night. Both Troops are now back to strong numbers with Haddon now matching its pre-lockdown membership and expecting to grow further in coming months. Wilson Troop has stayed steady on numbers, and is in fact continuing to grow.

Scouts in 2022/23 have also been back to enjoying a full year of camps, with fun camps such as the two winter camps occuring in January and December of 2022, and where Scouts got a mini ski lesson, a survival camp where Scouts slept outside and lived in the woods in teams for over 24 hours. Scouts have joined in competitions such as County’s ‘Bear Trek’ and the national scout competition Strategy in Cirencester. We have also had successful joint Troop meeting nights which will help the two Troops get to know each other more making camps and activities more enjoyable for everybody.

Scouts even enjoyed their first Summer camp in August of 2022 at Beaudesert campsite, where they took part in adventurous activities such as crate stacking, tomahawk throwing, fencing, and caving. Along with this Scouts tested their navigation skills for two days, walking around Cannock Chase, and to top it off they enjoyed two trips out, one to watch bike races at a speedway and the other a full day out at Alton Towers.

The leadership team of both Troops are proud to call ourselves Scout Leaders and proud of all the Scouts have accomplished in the year.

Congratulations to the Haddon Scout of the Year and the Wilson Scout of the Year! Congratulations also to Finn Steptoe-Smith who has achieved his Chief Scout’s Gold Award!

Wilson Scouts note

This year has been a massive change within both the Group and Section following Woody’s passing. The Scouts we had at the time and the Leadership team within the section were very resilient and we have adapted to the change.

The level of engagement from the youngsters has been infectious and certainly kept the Leadership team going. I would like to thank all of the Scouts and the leadership team Dee, Nathan and Tash, our young leader. You have all supported the transition within the Troop and helped each other a great deal. Thank you.

Stuart Dunnigan Wilson Scout Leader

Page 11

Explorer Section Report

At Explorers we try to make the program enjoyable and educational by offering a varied program. We try to teach the members all the life skills to be able to cope in today’s society from cooking and socialising, to working with people they would not normally choose to work with. In addition to the normal meeting nights the Explorers have taken part in several activities involving the other Explorer Units from Nuneaton and Bedworth District like the district bonfire and activity days, being able to meet new explorers or realising that people they already know are also explorer scouts. We had two explorers take part in the Nuneaton gang show which involved six months of rehearsals with scouts and guides from the district and performing one show per night from Tuesday to Friday per night and two shows on the Saturday at the Abbey theatre.

We had a variety of residential experiences for the explorers from a relaxing and hydrated winter camp visiting leicester city to survival camp sleeping in shelters that the explorers had made themselves out of natural materials.

The young leaders have been very helpful with some of them helping plan some programs and others engaging the members of other sections and helping deliver the programs.

It has been a pleasure working with and getting to know all of the Explorers as we have a variety of personalities within the Unit which makes it enjoyable to see how each member develops by learning new skills.
