Group Scout Leader’s Report

This last year has been incredibly challenging for our Scouting family. From financial implications to mental health and wellbeing influence, the impacts of Covid-19 have been extremely far reaching and changed so much that we took for granted in our daily lives.

It is a huge testament to the nature of all our members and volunteers that 1st Bedworth Scout Group adapted so quickly and successfully, transitioning from face to face activities and camps to virtual meetings, and still managing to enjoy an interesting, varied programme of activities provided by a very dedicated Leadership team and supported by a strong management team.

To further support our members, our Group Exec Committee made the decision to freeze ‘subs’ payments and this was continually reviewed to protect the long term financial security of 1st Bedworth Scout Group while also doing what we could to support our members in the spirit of Scouting. The ‘subs’ freeze was in place for over 9 months in total with ‘subs’ payments restarting from the 1st February 2021.

Activities on the virtual meetings ranged from the Cubs doing some Tai Chi with a professional instructor to the Scouts doing ‘The Great Duvet Challenge’ to the Beavers doing some mini pioneering to the Explorers learning magic tricks!

Even though meetings have been mostly virtual, our members in all Sections have been working hard towards their badges and awards and a massive total of 432 activity badges and challenge awards, 5 Chief Scout Bronze awards and 3 Chief Scout Gold awards have been awarded across the Group.

Regular security checks and essential maintenance checks were carried out at our meeting building (known as the ‘Scout Hut’) to ensure that it doesn’t fall into critical disrepair. There are a number of improvement projects still planned for the Scout Hut as soon as we are able to carry them out safely and in-line with current guidance.

Unfortunately, over this period around a third of our membership decided that the current form of Scouting was no longer working for them and we suffered one of our biggest losses of members in many years. That being said, we are still in a strong position going forward and we continue to be one of the largest and most active Groups in Warwickshire.

We are excited and thrilled to begin to welcome everybody back to face to face activities as soon as we’re able to. The Leadership teams have been hard at work and there are loads of exciting COVID safe activities planned for when we can return.

A huge thank you to our Young Leader Team who remained active and provided superb Leadership support to our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Young Leaders are aged between fourteen and eighteen years old. They give up a lot of their time to work on their Leadership training and to play a full part as members of the Section Leadership teams to plan and run activities for our younger members. They receive training which includes safeguarding and First Aid to give them the tools they need for this very important role.

One of the ways that we remained active in our local community was the support that our members were showing for the NHS with the Rainbows of positivity (https://1stbedworth.co.uk/rainbows-of-positivity/).

We are very proud of Mel, who is a Network Scout and Leader at 1st Bedworth, who opted to use the limited outdoor exercise time to continue volunteer work to clean up local areas and finished off a whopping 80 hours worth of volunteering. Mel overcame all of the challenges and was awarded The Scout of the World Award. The Scouts of the World Award is an international Scout award administered by the World Organisation of the Scouts Movement. The award was founded in 2005 and it was developed to give young people more opportunities to face the challenges of the future as identified by the United Nations Millennium Declaration in 2000. That declaration identified eight Millennium Development Goals and participation in the award helps the Scouts to work towards those goals. Mel is the first member of 1st Bedworth Scout Group to gain this award and one of just a small number of U.K. Scouts to earn this prestigious award. (https://1stbedworth.co.uk/mel-bond-scouts-of-the-world-award/)

Last but by no means least, we would like to thank all of the volunteers of the Leadership and support teams for their dedication and hard work providing a first rate Scouting experience for all of our members. We would also like to thank all of our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers for being so enthusiastic and supporting our activities, demonstrating great teamwork and supporting each other and their Leaders. You are a credit to your parents and peers. Finally we would like to thank all of our parents and carers who, week after week, make sure our members are able to attend their activities, supporting the Leaders and for helping their child/ward adapt to a much more virtual way of living and Scouting. We are truly proud of the 1st Bedworth Scouting family.

Treasurer’s report

My first year as the Group Treasurer was an interesting one, as due to COVID our sections were meeting virtually for the majority of the financial year. We suspended our subs payments in order to support our members, which in turn meant careful monitoring of our outgoing and ongoing expenses.

Our subs income reduced from £31,506 to £8,358, with a significant proportion of that coming from gift aid income related to the previous year. Our overall income reduced by 55%, due to the significant reduction in subs income as well as being unable to run any camps or activities over the 2020-2021 financial year.

Fortunately, 1st Bedworth Scout Group was awarded £25,419 in Covid related grants, as outlined in note 11 in the financial accounts.

Our overall expenses reduced from £70,089 to £37,629, with almost £25,000 of our expenses coming from refunds for our planned international camp in Kandersteg which unfortunately had to be cancelled due to Covid-19 uncertainties.

As our scout hut was effectively closed for the majority of the year, we managed to significantly reduce our costs on heating and lighting, maintenance and premises expenses, resulting in an overall surplus of £1,560.

When we restarted our subs payments in February 2021, we once again maintained our subs at a cost of £10 per month (£2.50 per week) for a fifth consecutive year.

We were also very fortunate to receive a donation of £1,271.65 from the late Tony Bishop, a friend of the group who asked for a donation to be made in his will. This donation has specifically been ring fenced in what we now call the “Tony Bishop Fund”, to be used to support our members to take part in camps and activities that may otherwise be unaffordable.

Overall 1st Bedworth has been very successful in managing the financial impacts of Covid-19 and is in a strong position to continue into the next financial year.

Luke Davis Group Treasurer

Beaver Section Report

2020 saw challenges we never thought we would face as a Scout Group, we took to online sessions on zoom, camping at home, activity packs and challenges to explore your local area.

Despite all the challenges we faced the Beavers still managed to meet weekly, and complete activity badges, and challenge awards, some of our Beavers even completed their Chief Scout Bronze award from home. During this period we awarded an incredible 192 activity and challenge badges.

We would like to say a massive thank you to all the Beavers and their parents/carers for joining us on the weekly zoom meetings and we are so excited to be welcoming you back soon to face to face activities and we look forward to an exciting year!

Cub Section Report

We are so proud of how the Cubs have coped with changes we weren't expecting with the pandemic and lock down during 2020.

As a cub pack we managed to carry on and support our Cubs with zoom online scouting in the comfort of our own homes.

We still provided programmes and at home activities for all who attended, and for Cubs who found zoom challenging we provided at home activity packs to everyone so they could still be part of the group and achieve their badges.

Some have had fun camping at home inside or in our gardens, campfires on TV and Backwards cooking at home too.

The Cubs did so well and tried their best and we couldn't have asked for more. Everyone has been supportive and friendly, Cubs have moved up and we gained new faces during this time with Cubs moving to Scouts and Beavers coming to Cubs. It was an absolute pleasure to provide the activities and programmes. We have had our very first investiture which was definitely a change and they will go down in history and memories with lockdown investiture. During this difficult time we had to make a decision as members were changing every week and we had two Cub packs and Cubs moved from one group to another and they all made each other feel welcome and were very friendly. The Cubs have adapted really well and as a group we awarded 65 badges and 8 joining in awards .

We can't stress how proud we are of you all and the support from all parents involved. We are a cub family. We look forward to next year's plans and programmes.

Scout Section Report

It was a very different year for the Scout Section. Covid restrictions meant that our Scout sessions moved online and we needed to think of a new way to enjoy Scouting. Membership numbers of both troops have declined but this is due to a number of reasons including Scouts moving up to Explorers and difficulties caused by the pandemic.

The Leadership team worked hard to continue delivering interesting and varied programs along with challenges set by various Leaders for the whole Group. We accommodated different needs of Scouts, whether it was online troop nights or independent activities. We are very proud of how the youngsters responded to not just the changes within Scouting during this time but also with the pandemic and all the challenges they faced. The Scouts were able to complete activity badges and challenge badges and parents joined in and got involved in some of the activities, filmed Scouts completing activities and encouraged the Leadership team to continue.

The Troop Leadership team of adults and Young Leaders have been strong and hard working. We are always looking for new ideas and challenges and look forward to rebuilding the troops.

Explorer Section Report

This past year we have had to adapt to a virtual program for most activities with only a handful of face to face activities when it was safe to do so, as a result our membership numbers have reduced to around 25 but still remain the largest explorer group in the district.

The explorers have shown initiative with helping us plan the program and been entertaining during our time having zoom meetings. They have had to develop new skills in communication to get the most out of the program as well as being the first section to return to face to face scouting helping us find the safest way for the other sections to meet.

The young leaders have been very helpful with some of them helping plan some programs and others engaging the members of other sections and helping deliver the programs.

When the rules had relaxed a bit we were able to get a successful Duke of Edinburgh silver expedition in completing the award for some explorers.

It has been a pleasure working with and getting to know all of the Explorers as we have a variety of personalities within the Unit which makes it enjoyable to see how each member develops by learning new skills.
