COMMUNICATION

An illustrated monthly e-bulletin newsletter was distributed to members throughout 2022 and paper copies made available upon request to those members who have no access to the internet, who are invited to contribute towards the postage costs . The Friends website was kept up to date so that through the year it always carried the current e-bulletin newsletter.

EVENTS in 2022

Although the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions were gradually lifted to start 2022, the impact of the lockdown continued to be felt through the year with the reluctance of many members to attend group gatherings.

The Friends Council planned The Pudding Club as a major social event on 14[th] May 2022 to launch a post-Covid social programme, but it had to be cancelled for lack of support. Nevertheless, the year still had its successes.

Ghosts In The Ruins was a music commission by the City of Culture towards which the Friends made a grant. Marking out 2022 as the 60[th] anniversary of the Cathedral’s Consecration, it filled the Cathedral. The music was composed by Nitin Sawhney CBE, recipient of the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Coventry Cathedral Choir played a prominent role. During the performance the audience moved from the nave into the Cathedral Ruins.

The Cathedral Chorister Reunion on 21[st] May 2022 was well-promoted through the Friends and proved to be a great success. Former choristers were welcomed by the Bishop of Coventry to a garden party at Bishop’s House before taking part in a Choral Evensong. The day finished with a Reunion Dinner, after which the choristers heard from several speakers including the Chairman of the Friends.

The Archive Film Show on 2[nd] April included historic film of the Cathedral. The highlight was film taken on New Year’s Eve 1958 of the transfer of worship from the old St Michael’s Cathedral site to the Chapel of the Cross on the site of the new St Michael’s Cathedral. This film had been discovered by the Friends who then arranged for a digital copy to be made and shown to members. The preservation of this film record of Cathedral history is very important.

Cathedral Reflections II launched on 25[th] May 2022 was the Friends’ contribution towards the Cathedral’s 60[th] Anniversary celebrations. The book recounts a selection of past events in the Cathedral’s life of the last 60 years and is well illustrated with photographs. Many of the events are recorded in detail for the first time. Each copy includes a bookmark with the wording of the Hallowing Places in the Cathedral Ruins. It was the wish of the late Mary Barnes to share those prayers with every visitor, and she left the Friends with funds to help fulfil that wish.

Financial Review

The charity’s policy on reserves.

Our expectation is that funds raised should be expended as soon as possible on the objects of the Friends – the promotion of the worship, work, and fabric of Coventry

5

The Frlends of Coventy Cathedral- Annual Report for Year ended 31 De¢ember 2022 Cathedral. The policy requirements of the Cathedral mean that the funds raised will not ne￿sSarilY be advanced on projects wrthin each year. All funds will be used for our charitable objects over a reasonable time period. The trustees have examined the Charity's requirements for reserves in the light of the main risks to the organisation. £4,000 is required for the working capital of the charity. Free reserves are invested for capital growth pending grant requests from the Cathedral Chapter. At the end of the year the free reserves totalled £93,594 which is £89,594 in excess of the working capital required. During the year our priority has been to ensure that projects fInan￿d by the charity are carried out to a high standard and that they accord with the policy of the Cathedral Chapter. Each project is examined carefully to ensure that it falls within the definition of the charity's objects. Financial Review In the year 2022 income amounted to £36,185 {2021 £19,598) and expenditure totalled £29,002 (2021 £19,939) of which £20,000 (2021 £17,850) was to gifts and donations resulting in a surplus of £7,183 (2021 deficit of £341). Our investments lost £6,357 (2021 gained £9,401) in the year. resulting in an increase of funds of £826 (2021 £9,060). The total of funds carried fOr￿ard was £108,302 of which £14,708 is for restricted purposes. The financial position was helped by a legacy of £10,000 received in the year. How expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity. To help the Cathedral Organ Appeal, any donations made by individual members of the Friends were doubled in value. This enabled the Friends to contribute £20,000 to the fund. That donation has enabled detailed technical evaluation reports to be prepared to assist the major fundraising process. The Organ Restoration is a massive project that will take several years to complete and is likely to cost in excess of £2m. Further assistan￿ may well be given in the future. DECLARATION The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees. report above. SIGNED on behalf of the trustees on the August 2023 Martin Royston Chair Illiams Deryc Treasurer
