## **TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT**

## **FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2023**

## **Objectives and Activities**

The Friends of Wimbledon High School (or “FoWHS”) is a charity governed by a written constitution last updated on 22 September 2008.

The object of FoWHS is to advance the education of the pupils of Wimbledon High School (“WHS” or “the School”) by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities for education at the School. This is achieved chiefly by organising events amongst the pupils and their parents and donating the net proceeds of those events for the purchase of items which the Trustees agree would benefit the school. The Trustees have had regard to the guidance from the Charity Commission on public benefit and FoWHS has a social remit to encourage cooperation, communication and good relations between the parents, staff and others associated with WHS and to strengthen the links between the School and the local community.

## **Structure, Governance and Management**

FoWHS is managed by a Committee whose members are elected or appointed on an annual basis at the Annual General Meeting. Trustees comprise the officers (Chair, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, and Vice Chairs Juniors (to the extent these positions are filled) and up to one Year Representative from each year group.

## **Achievements and Performance**

The social activities are largely achieved through year group based events organised two to three times per term by year representatives, for example coffee mornings and evening events. Fundraising constitutes the bulk of our efforts and our major regular events include Fairs at Christmas and in the summer, sales of Second Hand School Uniform, and a Ball.

## **Financial Review**

In the year to 31 July 2023, FoWHS raised £54,308 (2022: £32,907). The largest contributions were from the Christmas Fair, which raised £9,758 (2022: £10,274); the Ball, which raised £30,916 (2022: £nil); and Second Hand Uniform sales, which raised £9,671 (2022: £7,715).

In the same period, FoWHS made cash donations of £65,582 (of which £9,474 fulfilled commitments made in prior years). FoWHS supported the following School projects: £22,000 for the new second hand uniform pod, £14,000 for indoor cricket nets, £18,061 for provision of greenery on the School site. In support of the School’s local community and its Partnerships Programme, FoWHS also donated: £3,064 to Wimbledon Food Bank, £1,049 to Jigsaw4u, £4,344 to Perseid (a school in Merton), and £3,064 to Medical Lifelines Ukraine (a charity in which certain members of the School community are involved).

A further £12,856 has been committed to support the School’s Partnerships Programme in future periods.

The Trustees would like to thank everyone who has supported the activities of FoWHS this year, through the donation of their time, money or goods, and attendance at the events themselves.

## **TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT (continued)**

## **FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2023**

## **Future Plans**

FoWHS intend to continue to organise events and fundraise in support of the School.

## **Statement of Trustees' responsibilities**

Charity law requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which show a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and its financial activities for that period. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:

- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

- state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and

- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that FoWHS will continue in operational existence.

The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of FoWHS and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 1993. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of FoWHS and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

The Trustees assess the risks of each event and are covered by the school insurance policy. Each event is carefully planned within Health and Safety regulations.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE FRIENDS OF WIMBLEDON HIGH SCHOOL**

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts Friends of Wimbledon High School (“The Trust”), for the year ended 31 July 2023, which are set out on pages 6 to 9.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the Charities Act 2011 (the “Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent Examiner's statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Act; or

- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
