Aims and Organisation

Stowmarket and District Lions Club is a local club within Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organisation. It is one of some 49,000 clubs in over 200 countries with a total membership of 1.4 million. Lions Clubs International helps, supports and guides our club in the performance of our service to the local community and beyond. Clubs are chartered as separate entities with their own constitutions but have structural links to the District in 105CE and to the Multiple District of the United Kingdom then, ultimately to Lions Clubs International headquartered in Oakbrook, Illinois, USA.

Lions Club of Stowmarket and District

Lions Club of Stowmarket and District is a voluntary organisation which exists to help the local community and to support, as it sees fit, Lions national and international projects.

The administration of the club is wholly financed by it’s members. All time to organise fund raising activities and to provide community service is given freely by the members, their families and friends for no payment or reward.

Lions Club of Stowmarket and District was formed and chartered in 1980 and is among the largest in the United Kingdom.

Main Activities Undertaken

In a normal year Stowmarket Lions hold a range of fund raising events. A typical year’s activities are listed below:-

Suffolk Villages Charity Bike Ride, activities at Bacton Fayre, Pig Races, Santa Sleigh, Golf Day and Boxing Dinner.

In addition, the club ordinarily provides the following service activities:-

Assistance with the Target Club Fun Day for those less able, taking our Pig Race to various fund raisers for other charities, colllecting and delivering publicly donated supplies for the local Food Bank, financing and organising outings for Suffolk Young Carers, helping prepare Christmas Day lunch for the elderly and making many smaller donations to deserving local organisations and individuals. In addition, the club supplies manpower for national charities such as Marie Curie and the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

The Covid pandemic hit us badly during the affected years but it is pleasing to report the our activities are now back to pre-Covid levels. Membership has declined slightly in the last year as our membership ages.

The Trustees consider that thev have complied with their duty to have due regard to the Charity Commission's Public Benefit Guidance when exercising any powers and duties to which the guidance is relevant.
