REPORT FROM THE CHAIR Finan This report relates to April 2024 to March 2025, and our accounts for that period show a loss of £4,001. This is very much as anticipated, as we had made a conscious decision to utilise some of our reserves to subsidise the charges to members. Our rate remained at approximately lop per mlle, with local journeys and covid vaccination trips free of charge. The differen between those charges and the expenses that we pay to our drivers is, therefore, funded by PNCS. During the year In questlon, our costs contlnued to rlse, especlally our payroll costs. These rose by £5,584 (10 % ) year on year. This was clearly primarily due to the 9.8 % Increase In the natlonal minimum wage whlch took place In April 2024. On the income side, sales were £2,825 less than the previous year at The Shop, but this followed the highest year on record and was still the second highest year recorded. The Warehouse sales were actually up very slightlyi by £212, again following a previous record year in 2023-24. Our cash reserves continue to be very healthyi having reduced by just £2,229 over the year. Whilst we are always looking for ways in which we might further support the community we are, as ever, very cautious. Our primary concern is to ensure the long-term future of PNCS. Peo le and Events During the year The Shop and The Warehouse continued achieve very good levels of sales, thus allowing us to subsidise the costs to our members, as mentioned above. However, they also provide a great source of Iow-COSt items for our customers and contribute towards the recycling of items, thus reducing the amount going into landfill. The ongoing success of both businesses does require a great deal of effort by many people. l am very grateful for the support of all our staff and volunteers, and our trustees for all of their hard work and commitment. In addition, Sharon and Barbara took care of the administration of PNCS brilliantly, as usual, managing the office and organising all of the transport. Of course, none of our transport service would be possible without our volunteer drivers. A huge thank you to all of you. Thankfully, we have had a few new additions to the team during the year, but we still do struggle to meet demand at rtain times! Tina has now settled In completety at The Clrcle and along wlth her team of volunteer helpers is maklng sure that everythlng runs smoothly there, even organlslng a few fundralsers for The Clrcle as well. Of course, we recelve a lot of support from many other people In the communlty, but I am constsntly surprlsed and heartened by thelr generoslty. We not only recelve a constant stream of great ttems to *ll In The Warehouse and The Shop, but also financial donatlons and bequests from people who want to express their gratitude and show how much they value the servlce we provide.
Overall, l am very proud of what we are all achieving at PNCS, and long may it continue! Thank you everyone. Richard Wells Chairman
ns ortRe We have On again been very busy with transport. Listed below are some detalls of the journeys undertaken during the year: Totsl Miles= 31,266 Passenger journeys made= 693 Hours of driving by volunteers= 992 Hours waiting time by volunteers= 663 Members= 199 P0S Primary Care Services journeys (eg...da)tlsts, thXt0 opttdans) Welsh Hospital journeys (eg...Abergavenny, Gobowen. Cwdlff) = English Hospital journeys (eg...HeIOrd, Bfftam, Leomir6ter, Tejford, Shrewlxry) = Powys Community Hospitsl journeys (eg...Uarthd,econ, 11th, B[MlS, Knighton) 97 18 254 110 The Community Transport scheme would not exist wlthout our volunteer drivers, so I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to every one of them. Without them none of this would be possible. They not only provide an essential service, but they do so in a friendly and caring way, making our members feel much more comfortable than they would on public transport (if it were even avallable). As we do not have an unlimited supply of drivers, we do still prioritise transport need for medical appolntments. I am also very gratsful to Barbara Masterson who helps me In the Transport Office. She Is a dntsstic help. We continue to heavily subsidise the cost of the transport scheme, and thls Is posslble mainly due to the success of The Shop and The Warehouse. A very small proportion of our Income comes from government funding. I would, therefore, like to thank everyone who contributes to the success of those businesses. We also receive a great deal of generous support from members of the community and local businesses. This is also very much appreciated. It is also very gratifying to hear all of the positive comments that we receive from our members about how much this service is valued by them. If you do have any ideas of how we can do more for our members? Or is there something you feel is needed in our community that Community Support could help with? Please do not hesitste to call into the office to discuss with us. We'd love to hear from you. l am always seeking additional volunteer drivers. If you know anyone who might like to do thisi please do ask them to call into the High Street office. Sharon Jones General Manager and fransport Co-ordinator
The Wareh seRe ort Last year, I was delighted to report that the Warehouse had seen a significant increase in sales in its first year in the new premises. Thls year I am very pleased to say that this success has continued, and sales are at a similar level for the financial year 2024-2025. In fact, there is a very slight year on year increase of £212 to £64,454. From time to time, we have had art sales and book sales to boost sales in those areas, and on one occasion we had a half price sale to redu eXsS stock, which was very successful. During the year, the ownership of the Warehouse changed hands, and we have new landlords, but they are very supportive of what we are doing and nothing has really changed. We continue to receive many posltlve comments about the Warehouse. Customers are complimentary about it being tidy, well presented and friendly. We endeavour to keep our prices reasonable, whilst making sure that we get good value for PNCS, and most customers seem happy with the prices we charge. If we receive donatlons that we believe will achieve a higher sales value elsewhere, then we do look for customers further afield, using the internet or sometimes by sending an item to auttion, or getting In touch with one of our numerous contscts in the antiques trade. The main objettive is just to achieve the best price for PNCS. As our reputstion and our network of contscts continues to grow, we are being approached more and more often to help with house clearances. We collett items that we are confident that we can sell, but we also help in other ways, such as putting people in contact with other organisation who can tske items we can't. This help to redu their costs to empty the premises and provldes us with good income so the whole prOsS is mutually beneficial, and people are usually very grateful for the support. We very much appreciate all of the support we receive from our volunteers, including our team of PAT testers. During the year we have also had some more young people working with us as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Scheme awards, and they enjoyed their time with us as well as fulfilling the reqU1ments of their courses. Our van is still being kept busy colletting and delivering smaller items, but we do need to employ outside help for the larger items. To conclude, I would like once again to acknowledge and thank all of the people who contlnue to support The Warehouse, our stsff. volunteers; donors; customers. the trustees of PNCS and the community at larye. Thank you all very much indeed! Lynne Wells Warehouse Trustee
The Sho Re ort The shop has had another good year. Although the sales were actually £2,825 less than the previous year, at £22,201 this was still the second highest annual sales figure on record. We are always well supported and are thankful for the many customers that pass through the door. As always, I must thank the volunteers. These ladies are brilliant, and are always happy to help out, sometimes with very little notice. l am grateful to all of them. We have some wonderful donations and are blown away by the generosity of people. Thank you again to everyone involved. Sacha Plckard Shop Co-ordinator
THE CIRCLE An exciting year again at The Circle, which makes it now 13 since it was founded. Last year we made a huge effort to advertise ourselves around Presteigne and Knlghton, A banner was made for us by Richard and Lynne which we proudly display OLtside the youth centre each week. We have put posters up to explain what we are all atK)Ut as we feel many more would benefit from our group. We have had the editor of the mid-border news at the Circle recently, Carla plans to put a feature In the next addition which will hopefully generate more people coming. We have continued with the game Boccia (spelt wrongly last year) a type of indoor bowls with soft balls-stlll a firm favourite. With exercise with Anne, bingo, slngalong with Marioni piano music with Mlcheal, tabletop games and a dabble at crafts. One of our ladies said she didn't realise crafts could be so much fun. We have also had the Knighton bell ringers and a very interesting tslk from Roger Curtis about POWS in Presteigne. We hired a coach from Owens motors and 24 of us went on a trip in May around the Elan valley, stopplng for lunch at the cafe and also giving people chance to shop in the visitor's centre. Some people don't get out much and seemed to really appreaate this trip out. We also held a small party to celebrate VE day, accompanying Marion with songs of that era, a lot of laughter throughout. Our group have again been offered free tickets to events during Presteigne's festival, a great chance for people to attend the local events. In November last year we held an autumn Bonanza in the youth centre, with many stslls selllng donated items and In totsl raised just over £970. We plan to do the same this year and thank everyone for thelr extensive support with this. As w11 as this the trusty volunteers had a stall within the Circle and raised another £165. This year we have done the successful car boot sales, in Norton, Prestelgne and Leominster, raising a totsl of £627.90. Again, without the donations and the volunteers this would not be possible. Thankyou. Presteigne is a fabulous town and the community splrit is second to none. We all got together and had a festive Christmas buffet in December and a chance to celebrate who we are as a group before we closed for the holidays. We have held a couple of birthday parties on demand thls year, which were funded by members of the Circle and much enjoyed by everyone. I was off work from the Circle for four WkS in February due to having a new knee, a huge thank you for everyone involved in helping me to get mobile and back to work. A lot of work has been done at the youth centre this year, which makes it a much nicer, warmer and safer place to hold our group. Thank you to Tery for making this happen. While the work was being carried out at the youth centre the Circle was held in the Baptist church next door, thank you to Margaret for the idea and Rolly and Olvryn for making that happen. We managed to continue to run the Circle with a lot of imagination and laughter. We have been very fortunate In receiving some private donations from members of the public as well as the continued and valuable support from PNCS. We have had quite a few people in and out of hospitsl over the past year, some are stlll the unfortunately, we send them our get well wishes for speedy recoveries.
It continues to amaze me how dedicated our volunteers are. I cannot thank them enough for all that they do, I truly appreciate it and would not exist without them. The Cirde are such a lovely group of like-minded people, tsking pleasure in the Circle's existen. I feel privileged to be part of it and look forward to the coming year ahead.
