Chair’s Report: Glenn Taylor & Kate Mackintosh: 2022-23
I am really pleased to be reading another very positive OSA Annual report to you. In recent years, we have battled through Covid, and against all odds, kept the level of monies raised high. However, that doesn’t mean that now we are back to normal that things have necessarily become any easier, or less time-consuming. There are people on this Committee who are just keen to do things even better than we have done before, whenever we can. There has been no resting on laurels, or just getting by. There has been a constant drive to do what we can to support the School more, to raise more funds for the School and to enhance the enjoyment of every visitor to the School even more.
We should all remember that the success of the OSA is not and should not be related solely to monies raised. It is so much more than that, from making visitors welcome and refreshed, to helping to showcase what the School do and stand for, and to facilitate people meeting and making new friends and really enjoying themselves. Everything we have done and continue to do is geared towards meeting these goals, and we sincerely thank all of you who have helped to make this possible.
We would like to thank a number of Committee members who have worked so hard to ensure we can provide the services we do to Parents and Helpers and to hand over the sums of money that we do to the School.
Firstly, all of you will be aware of the ongoing difficulties that we have had with our banking over the last couple of years. Every time we thought progress was being made, another issue cropped up. We can only thank Anthony again for his patience and tenacity to get our banking sorted out once and for all. Whilst we are not quite there just yet, the ‘finishing line’ is close and hopefully our banking issues are just about behind us. Our thanks also go to Anthony for dealing with all of our accounting so efficiently and effectively. It is not always noticed quite how much goes on behind the scenes.
The ‘Queens of the Nearly New Uniform’ are as efficient as they were when they took over. Tricia and Balu have a tried and tested system of receiving, mending, and selling lots of uniform, which in recent times has been even more gratefully received by parents. Everything is set up well and this continues to be not only a great service for the parents, but is a great money raiser for the School. A very big thank you to both Tricia and Balu for all that they have done and continue to do.
Deepika has experienced yet another really difficult year with the 200Club with the wretched and time-consuming banking issues that we have just mentioned. We have an update on the banking due to be shared in the Committee meeting so for now, we will just say that it has been a mighty challenge, but we are very close to coming out the other side and this will enable us to focus on getting the 200Club back to being as good a fund-raiser for the OSA as it has been in the past. Deepika has just been so patient whilst the bank has been so unhelpful and we are very grateful to her for sticking it out and getting us so close to being back on track.
Maria has once again been so efficient with her Book Covers, that we maybe take her for granted. This is another tried and tested system that just works so well. A great job done, pretty much on her own, ensuring that everyone is catered for efficiently with regards to School Book Covers. Thank you Maria.
It was Quiz time once again back in November with another packed main hall and dining hall. Huge thanks once again go to Simi for brilliantly co-ordinating, and for everyone who gave up their time to organise everything both before the day and of course on the day. The questions seemed to be even more difficult than in previous Quizzes but everyone attending appeared to enjoy the evening and will hopefully be back supporting our next Quiz.
Website/SM – This has been a bit of a struggle once again, although recently, some positive changes have been made and we have been able to use the services of those who know a bit more about this sort of thing than me. Jay has carried out some training with Nicola in the School office, and very recently Tricia has spent some time with Nicola to at least bring the site more up to date. A bit more is required on this so let’s just say ‘work in progress but certainly heading in the right direction….’
The highlight of the year for the OSA took place at the School during the summer term…. The previous formula for the tried and tested ‘Summer Festival’ was pretty much ripped up and in its place came the launch of the ‘OwensFest’. Eleanor and her team just pulled out all of the stops to produce what can only be described as a fantastically successful Summer event. The ‘core’ team of Eleanor, Bev, Tricia, Balu and Kate spent a huge amount of time preparing the event, with a lot of help from Jig and Paula especially in the 2 weeks leading up to the event, as well as Tony and Paula. The weather was kind to us and people came in their droves to experience excellent food, drink, fun stalls, fun activities, music entertainment and everyone went home with huge smiles on their faces. Well done to Eleanor and to everyone else who was involved in the planning, the setting up, helping out on the day and clearing up afterwards…… It is going to be a hard act to follow but planning has already started for an even bigger and better OwensFest on 2[nd] July 2023…
With the number of productions and performances at the School being back to normal levels, Tony has done a brilliant job of organising helpers at each event, as well as doing a large amount of helping himself. Tony and the team of helpers are doing a fantastic job in providing refreshments to casts, performers, staff and audiences which only enhances their enjoyment of the shows. Although the help with serving is important, stock needs to be checked, shopped for, chillers need filling, floats organised, then there is the set up and clear up which someone needs to do. Well done to everyone involved with this, with special mention to Geoff and of course Jig, both of whom have helped so often. Thank you.
Alan took up the reigns on Easyfundraising from Geoff this year and has continued to encourage more people to get involved in this important revenue stream for the
OSA. We would also like to thank Alan for becoming a very valuable Committee member and someone who has offered to fill another vacant role in the Committee for the coming year. We would also like to thank everyone associated with the School who supports the OSA via Easy-fundraising.
Whilst we have a few Match Funders, this continues to be a somewhat untapped revenue stream. We identified this sometime ago but, slightly disappointingly, we have not been able to maximise the benefits of Match Funding. We managed to recruit many new potential Match Funders at the New Year 7 parents evening back in June. It is now a case of really encouraging our existing Match Funders and new recruits to help whenever they can. Keily has picked this up in recent months and we will discuss further in the Committee meeting. We really believe this needs as much focus as we can give it. It really is money for next to nothing and if managed well, could increase monies raised hugely. Again, big thanks to the Match Funders who support the OSA in this way.
Walter is another of our Committee who just gets things done, often without prompting, which is really helpful and useful. He has therefore become another very valuable member of the Committee, and another who is perhaps somewhat taken for granted. Thank you Walter, for all you do behind the scenes. It is very much appreciated and valued.
Ivan has continued to showcase what we do in the School Newsletter. Not quite as simple as it sounds, his role necessitates extracting all of the positive things we do in the OSA, how we help and support the School and what events people have enjoyed and can look forward to, in the hope that as many as possible support what we do. Ivan has given up lots of his free time to carry out this role, and it is most appreciated.
And, of course, many, many thanks to the other members of the Committee and other helpers who have given up their own time to help the OSA. We really hope we haven’t offended anyone if we didn’t mention them in person, but we really are ‘all in this together’ and your help is very much appreciated.
Our relationship with the School works very well. We are always supported in what we are doing and the School is always keen to help us whenever and wherever possible. Despite her incredibly busy schedule, Hannah attends many of our meetings, (rarely missing any of our socials!) and is always trying to find a way to say ‘yes’ to our requests, however outlandish…. Vicky has also given up her time to support our meetings and in many other ways, and has also done what she can to help. We have experienced a similar approach from Aran (Premises Manager), Ces and his team of Caretakers, and of course Nicola, whose willingness to help whenever asked, has just taken pressure off us on many occasions. So big thanks from us to Hannah and the other members of the School, for making things that much easier for us.
All of this combined effort culminated in Anthony handing over a cheque to Hannah at the January meeting for £32,000. We also have another c.£10,000 to hand over once the 200Club banking issue has been sorted out. As a result of the funds raised, we were once again delighted to be able to meet all requests from Heads of Department at the School for items, visits and many other things that the children would not otherwise have been able to experience. I would just like to read out the following emails received from Heads of Department:
Good morning OSA
I just wanted to say a huge thank you for your incredibly generous donation to the art department. The new kiln will provide exciting outcomes for students across the key stages and I look forward to sharing those with you in the future. If time allows, feel free to pop along to the department to look at the work or simply for a catch up and cup of tea.
We are ever so grateful for your support. Thank you. Wishing you a happy and healthy 2023
Ped and the Art team
To everyone in the OSA,
Hannah has today informed us that you have kindly provided us with some funds to allow us to purchase some new kit for our sports teams. In particular, we are going to buy a new football kit (a smaller fit one so younger years and girls' teams can use it), hockey kit, basketball kit and cricket tops. As we are trying to increase participation in sport, particularly post Covid, this will be a huge boost and real encouragement to those students who always attend practices and represent the school.
In addition, the money will allow us to purchase some much needed new hockey sticks. We have recently started having a hockey coach from Southgate Hockey Club come in to take skill sessions with students of all ages so to have better equipment for them to use will certainly benefit their progress. These will also prove beneficial in our curricular teaching of hockey.
As a department we really do appreciate all of the support you give the school.
Kind regards Steph Palfrey
Dear colleagues in the OSA
I am writing to say thank you for the extremely generous donation to the Sixth Form to help us to refurbish the common room. Almost all students will benefit from this, and it will make such a difference to the student experience.
The common room is currently a mishmash of chairs, and there are only enough lockers for students to share one between two or three, which is far from ideal. This will be enough for us to make the common room a far nicer space for them to relax and to learn.
I will send a photograph of the new look common room when it is all here, and will send a photo of how it currently is to compare it to. It will look like the best episode of changing rooms!
Thank you for all you do for the students, and for us as members of staff. It makes all of our lives in school better to have these extras that we could never afford otherwise.
Jeni (and the team, and all of the students!)
Good afternoon and a huge thank you to you for supporting our bid to invite two authors into school to inspire our students.
You may remember that when we held our Reading Week in July 2022, we had a number of visiting authors and the students enjoyed the sessions enormously. In our ever increasingly pressurised education system, it is so wonderful to be able to expose our students to the joys of reading and writing by having direct access to writers and journalists.
Thank you again and I will enjoy sharing information about these events with you once arranged.
What a lovely way to start 2023.
Regards
Jacqui Beaumont
To whom it may concern
I just wanted to write & say a huge thanks on behalf of all the Social Sciences team for the monies raised to allow us to buy a range of teaching resources for the department. I am sure it will make a material difference to the students over the forthcoming years & in the build up to the summer examinations.
Kind regards Jamie Bird
Dear OSA
Thank you for the generous allocation of funds for the purchasing of new science equipment.
A large number of students will benefit from these items
Thank you once again
Mike Jays
From Kate and I, thank you so much for your support, time and effort over the last 12 months. With the huge amount of effort of so many people in this group, it has been yet another extremely successful year for the OSA.

8. Bank Accounts
A number of issues were experienced during the year with the operation of the HSBC bank accounts due to safeguarding and the lack of access to the banks due to COVID. This resulted in temporary freezing of the bank accounts during the year which have now been resolved in the main. The 200 Club Bank account was suspended and efforts are ongoing to reinstate this.
9. Post Balance sheet Event - Covid 19
Since 31 December 2019, the spread of COVID‐19 has severely impacted many local economies around the globe. In many countries, businesses are being forced to cease or limit operations for long or indefinite periods of time. Measures taken to contain the spread of the virus, including travel bans, quarantines, social distancing for the school but the main issue has been that all live events so far have ceased.
The OSA has determined that these events are non‐adjusting subsequent events. Accordingly, the financial position and results of operations as of and for the year ended 31 December 2022 have not been adjusted to reflect their impact. The duration and impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic, as well as the effectiveness of government and central bank responses, remains unclear at this time. It is not possible to reliably estimate the duration and severity of these consequences, as well as their impact on the financial position and results of the OSA for future periods.

From Kate and I, thank you so much for your support, time and effort over the last 12 months. With the huge amount of effort of so many people in this group, it has been yet another extremely successful year for the OSA.
