Sladdin, 1) Christian Science Society, Halifax is a branch of The Mother Church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, based in Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America. The church was founded by our leader, Mary Baker Eddy, at the end of the 19th century. The Christian scien￿ Movement reaches out to the world, to heal sickness and sin, and to bless all mankind. 2) The purpose of Christian Science Society, Halifax is to provide church services for the Calderdale community, and beyond. Services are held each Sunday at 10.45am, and on the first Wednesday of the month we hold a Testimony Meeting, at 7.30pm. Here members of the congregation can share their experiences as to how their practice of Christian Science has helped and supported them in their daily lives. In early December we hold an annual Thanksgiving Service. All of our services are open to everyone. 3) Our Society houses a reading room, and a library containing official Christian Science literature, which can be borrowed or purchased. These facilities are open before and after our services. We also maintain a display window with quotes from The Bible and the Christian Science text book, Science & Health, with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy. Other iterns such as posters, hymns, magazines and books are also displayed. Members of the public frequently stop to read literature on display. The Society is a resource for the community, not only because of the church services we offer. The society has a small car park used by local office workers. we maintain a food bank collection which is delivered regularly to a town centre food distribution centre. In addition a local tenants association hold their annual general meeting on our premises. 4) The Society is managed by the trustees, listed above, and our treasurer is Mrs R,M. Sladdin. Members of the Boardrrrustees meet every 415 weeks. If anything arises requiring immediate attention an interim meeting is held. Everyone involved with Halifax Society is a 'lay person, there are no paid clergy. Our accounts for the year end are prepared by Peter Crowther & Co, Chartered Accountants, 9, Riverside Court, Halifax, HX3 9LP. Our total income for the financial year, ending January 31st, 2025 was £57206.03, this is unusually high because we had received donations of £30,000 from Keighley Christian Science Society, and £20,000 from Wakefield Christian Science Society, which had both sadly closed. Our usual sources of income are from church collections, sales of literature and car park payments. Expenditure for the period was £9513.07. 5) Christian Science Society, Halifax has in place a number of policies which are appropriately reviewed and updated. A recent review of health and safety brought to light a few matters requiring attention which have been acted upon, eg repainting the white edges on the front steps. We do not, at present, have a Sunday School, but the care of visiting children is referred to in our appropriate policy document, along with the care of vulnerable adults. A clear, but simple notice in our foyer outlines our guidance for the care of children and vulnerable individuals. 6) Our current financial situation is sound, however whilst this is positive, our congregation is few in numbers, though loyal. Recently a fomier member of the church has returned to us, which is encouraging. This year our annual general meeting was held on July 23rd 2025 and the future of our Society was discussed. The trustees shared with those attending that there was a possibility that closure of the Society may have to be considered, and a review date of June 2026 was set. Various ideas were shared as to what steps we could take to help us maintain our place of worship. We are supported by the Mother Church in Boston, USA, which can provide help and guidance. Ongoing prayer is of vital importance to us. The founder of our church, Mary Baker Eddy writes on page 494 of her textbook, Science & Health, with Key to the Scriptures, 'Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need,.
