BORDERLINE COUNSELLING SERVICE

TRUSTEE’S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2023

Objectives and activities

Borderline’s objectives are to offer general counselling to the community and provide pastoral care and counselling training. Borderline is affiliated to the Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC) and abides by its Code of Ethics and Practice.

Borderline services are offered at the Counselling Centre of 42a Warwick Road, Carlisle Cumbria, and on Zoom or telephone from counsellor’s homes. There are 5 counsellors and 1 receptionist. 3 Trainees who were on placement with us are now part of this team as fully qualified counsellors.

Ian Keyes has resigned from trustees and Brian Downie has joined as a trustee. Kieran Palliser has taken on the role of treasurer. 2 of our counsellors retired this year.

We have had difficulty in retaining and recruiting counsellors in recent years, which has led us to decide to make payments to our counsellors on a per session basis. We also intend to re-numerate receptionists and a manager in due time. We have engaged with a professional fundraiser to be able to fund this new venture. All payments will be made on a self-employed basis.

Achievements and performance

Approximately 621 sessions of counselling were achieved this year. The clients came to us mainly because of G.P.’s recommendation and internet. The outcome of their counselling was evaluated as excellent in the feedback forms returned to Borderline. The main issues for which help was sought were anxiety, depression, stress, abuse, relationships, and bereavement. All training this year was for team members and was monthly in centre.

Organisations and sources of support

Donations have been made from clients, friends of Borderline and 1 church. A significant number of grants have been awarded by funders through our fundraiser.

Outlook

To encourage members through monthly team meetings and provide ongoing training opportunities to further counsellor personal development. We also aim to recruit new receptionists, counsellors, trustees, and a manager. With the new financial help through the fundraiser, we have retained our present counsellors and expect to have 3 new counsellors join us early in 2024.
