REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES '
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST MARCH 2023
Leigh's career began in horticuliure, gaining qualifications in commercial crop production and an MS¢ in Int¢mational
HortiCul￿re. H¢ managed plant nurseries, before becoming a le¢lur¢r and subsequently a Division H¢ad at the Welsh
College of Horticulture. He joined the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh IRBGE) in 2004. as Head of the School of
Horti¢ulture, becomins AsgOCiate Director of Horticulture. His role included internatsonal botanic garden development
and capacity building in several COLMtries including 3 prolonged period in Oman. He also completed a short-terni
placement for Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), delivering trdining to Ethtopian famiers. Leigh chaired the Grow
Careers initiativ¢, and served a5 PrestdeTtt of the Lharrered Institute of Horticulwre, a period when they were dwarded
Royal Chart¢r.
Inspired at RBGE, Leigh's career developed a wider conserv*ion focus. becoming a Trustee of the UK Marine
Conservation Society. and Director of Community Conservatton at the Royal Zoological Society of Stotland. and was
the first CEO of the National Land Based College. Leigh spent 2 years (2018-19) on the UKOT of St Helena delivering
a training needs analysis of the island's agriculture for the St Helena Government and a 5ub5equent up-skilling
programme. Leigh helped guide the establishment of the Marine Team in the St Helena National Tnjst. and joined their
CoLU]cil as Vice.President. Leigh additionally undertook consultancy on both St Helena and Ascension Islands,
supporting the waste manag¢Tnent plan on Ascension, reviewing theiT hydroponic farni. and dev¢loping proposals to
enhance recycling OD St Helena. A keen scuba diver in his spare time, Leigh volunteered as a diver for the SHG on their
annual reef surveys and a Darwin Project on lobsters.

Forum News 56 wds published and c1￿Ulated in July and Forum News 57 was published in November.
Edition 12 of Save Our Speciul Naitsre ofmonlserrat was published online and circulated in May 2022, and edilion 13
in September, using mat¢rial from a trip to Mont5errat in July. Edition 14 was produced in March 2023. Currently it is
circulated to around 2(K) people in Montserrnt and beyond. but 50m¢ of these circulate fvrther.
An annual Christmas card was sent out io UKOTCF'S circulation list in December with a review of the y¢ar and
looking ohead to 2023.
A series of videos on Adopl a Homefor Wildlife sites ("Wildlife Homes") and ihe"Adopt¢rs" have been produced by
Honomy Environmental Ed￿catiOn OtTicer- thes¢ w¢re filmed in the D¢¢ernber visit. These ar¢ PLtblished on YouTube
(https.'l/www.youtube.conV@ukotcf46761videos aT2d website (https-/lwww.ukotcf.org.ukJkey-
project￿adOplahomefOftw1Idllfe) with links from UKOTCF'S webslte. The Communications Officer in Montserrdt for
the project (and for Montserrat Naiional Trust) is linking io the vid¢0 on social media. Several other videos on Wildlife
Homes will be r¢ady and released as 500n as the Adopters for thal site have had chance tt) check them. Others on other
Wildlife Hom¢s will follow over coming months.
As part of the proje¢t mentioned above, UKOTCF has develo￿ a framework for Tes¢arch to support conservation
efforts in UKOTS. It is hoped that this can be used io build a case for greater support for them as funded researchers in

be interested in working with them on a new publi¢2tion- a sort of re-visiting of that book but in a style combining

Council member Lord (John) Randall. UKOTCF ha5 published the book and, in turn. will benefit frorn the proceeds of

viewed. This was prepared for the laun¢h of the book in March at Wormsley in the Chiltern$, one of the homes of the
Getry family. The late Mr JohD-Palll Getty Jr {later Sir Paul) had allowed the use of hts estatr for the r¢aring release
of th¢ first kites in England for over 100 years. At the launch, Mike presented a copy of the book io Sir Paul's grdnd50n,
Mr Alexander Getty. UKOTCF Council member Mts Joan Walley drew attention to how the booK Éogether with ihe
vid¢o, provides an opportunity to promote fvrther UKOTS, work across the UK as an example of ¢ili2en-science best
practice.
