CLAPHAM VILLAGE HALL
CHAIR'S REPORT 2024-24
AGM 0610512025
What a year for the Hall! lfithere do I sta
This time last year committee was pleased to hear that we were turning
the
comer on hirings and we were lookn.ng forward to a steady year. How
wrong
we were!
I would like to commend the hirers, James and Jenny for the sterling
efforts in
keeping the hall going despite the water pouring in and one thing is for
sure I
don't think the mop has seen as much use in its entire life!
Grant applications were made and after a series of rejections it was
beginning
to look like the Hall was destined to be mothballed as we certainly
couldn't
continue with the deterioration. Having kept the Parish Council updated
on the
series of issues being experienced at the Hall, I got to the point of
requesting
that the Council take on the responsibilrty of a loan to replace the roof as
other avenues had been exhausted.
l am very grateful to the Parish Council for agreeing to take on this
responsibilrty. My thanks go to all the councillors who could see that the
future
of the Hall was worth it. l am incredibly gratefvl to Rosemary and Robin
at
BATPC for their tireless efforts in bringing in the loan. There was not a
dry eye
around when we finally heard the news that we were successful.
At the time of writing this report, the roof is finished and the scaffolding is
now
down. Thank you to Neil and Josh of L & P Elite Roofing for their
excellent
workmanship and to their crews for getting the roof completed to an
ex￿sIent
standard.
Completing such a huge task combined with the extensive internal
damage
led to far more intemal works than we could have ever predicted. With a
sizeable Insuran￿ payout and a couple of successful grant applications,
finally the tide was tuming. We have committed to the long-terrn future of
the
Hall, it is now a dry. safe environment for the communty to continue to
use.
We wished Jenny well for her well-deserved holiday through December
and
we welcomed Sara to join us as an additional cleaner. I'd like to thank
them
both as cleaning around and after building work really feels like a
pointless
exercise, but it is much appreciated. And James has shown he is handy
with a
vacuum!
The last few weeks has seen the installation of a suspended ceiling

looking fantastic and the decorating will begin very soon.
Wrthin in all the chaos there have been issues, but l am so grateful to
everyone who has stuck wrth us. To those who know that this will all be
worth
it in the end. To those new hirers that have joined us during the chaos
and are
showing that Clapham Village Hall can only go from strength to strength.
Thanks to the Concert Party for somehow managing to pull off a panto at
probably the worst time of the building's deterioration. Thanks for their
fantastic fundraising and donation to the Hall and their innovative idea of
Clapham's Got Talent. which was so well received it is back again at the
end
of this month. Congratulations to Ross, Sean and the team for being the
runner-up at the Bedford Local Heroes Award. You will always be the
winners
in our eyes. I will take this opportunty to wish Sean all the best for the
future
as he steps down from the committee and thank him for his help and
advice
over the years.
My thanks go to all the members of this committee for their dedication to
the
cause and their support and encouragement,. it really was needed at
certain
points. Thanks to the Football Club for stepping in and hosting many of
the
meetings which the hall was unable to handle. And for being so patient
with all
of the delays to the work. Extra special thanks go to Cicely for managing
the
finances during which can only be called a tricky year!
Thanks must go to Rosemary for her tireless efforts, her design and
creativity
from a business plan, a loan application, grant funding, project managing,
electrician whipping and everything else she in between.
I think this year can be summed up by saying we held our nerrfe. And as
this
year begins, I know that the sky is the limst for the hall, but thankfully we
can
no longer see the sky through the roof!
