Chairs Report 2020

Hello and welcome to you all, we really appreciate you taking the time to come along and support Tilbury Sea Scout Group.

Another year has flown past with virtual camps and virtual weekly meetings full of activities completed. We all hope that the young people have had a great time participating in these events and have enjoyed their experiences in this difficult time..

I would like to take this opportunity to say a really big THANK YOU to Ian and all the section leaders, young leaders and helpers for their help and support in ensuring that all our young people can participate fully in these activities. We must remember that everything they do for the group is voluntary and they are giving up their evenings and weekends to run all these outings and meetings. Their tireless enthusiasm and dedication ensures that every Beaver, Cub and Scout receives a great experience while they are a part of the Scout Movement.

Hopefully restrictions will soon be lifted and we will be able to look forward to another action packed year that will bring along a fresh set of challenges as well as a lot of fun. Thank you for your continuing support in all that we do.

Karen Mansfield Chair Tilbury Sea Scout Group

Group Scout Leaders Report 2020 – 2021

Unfortunately, we still remain in the situation of having to deal with the implications of Covid 19, and until otherwise advised by the Scout Association and must continue to not meet face to face. We are having to do everything virtually and obviously this does make a lot of our activities impossible to manage, but we are now trying to improvise virtually. Hopefully, soon we may be able to return to some degree of normality.

I am very proud to be a member of the great team that we have at Tilbury Sea Scout Group. Having said that we are more like a “Family” than a group. It never fails to amaze me on how well people get on and help one another irrespective of which section they belong to.

As I have said so many times previously, our biggest strength at Tilbury is the fantastic team spirit that exists. The atmosphere that we have enables our young members to get the best out of their scouting.

To start with there are a lot of people that I need to say a huge “THANK YOU” to for their commitment. Firstly, to Karen Mansfield for the huge support that she has given me as our Group Chairperson and for the enthusiasm that she injects.

Also, thank you to Sue Puttnam for her continued work in covering the Group Secretary role whilst also being a uniformed assistant with our Beaver Colony. The Secretary position is one that I am still looking to fill. In itself it is not an onerous role, but I cannot be underestimated in its importance to the group overall.

Russell Robinson does a great job managing our finances as Group Treasurer and his efforts make a significant impact on the group, enabling us to get a much firmer handle on where we are financially.

Jon Puttnam, Tanith Hodder and Debbie Newell always provide great support to me and make the GSL role that much easier. I must not forget to thank all of the assistant leaders, sectional and occasional helpers. Your support has been absolutely tremendous, I and the youngsters are extremely grateful.

I would like Gordon Hayers for his work in helping to keep our site in order, and for fighting the ongoing battle with the jungle, to keep the grass short and the weeds at bay and also all of our kit in order.

I need to acknowledge the support and input that we have received from our Young Leaders who have remained with the group since outgrowing the Scout section to assist the Section Leaders and pass on some of the valuable knowledge that they have acquired through their scouting careers on to our young members. I hope that each and of these individuals take up the role of an adult leader once they reach 18 years of age. These being: Thomas Mansfield, James Whitby and Chloe Davey.

All of the Leadership Team spend a considerable number of hours not just running section evenings, camps and trips, but behind the scenes there are many additional hours planning and arranging activities, meetings, phone calls, administration and training, shopping etc.

Contrary to a number of people’s belief all of our leaders are volunteers and unpaid, and do all of this on top of their daytime jobs.

The Group is very heavily indebted to Trevor Gilbey for his help and the time that he has given in transporting kit for us.

There are also a band of people out there (too many to mention individually) who help us on a casual basis doing all sorts of small tasks that enable us to run activities. We are all only too aware that without you we would have great difficulty in functioning. Please keep up the great work.

The group has had another good year considering the Covid restrictions and has supported Thurrock District by participating in many of the virtual district events.

For the future a new permanent building is still one of my personal goals along which is securing the freehold of the site. Central heating is a high priority for the current building and hopefully we will be able to have this installed sooner rather than later.

I would like to thank all of the parents for sending your children to us and allowing them to take part in their Scouting activities. If your children are enjoying themselves please spread the word so that others can also benefit. Without the children there would be no Tilbury Sea Scout Group. Thank you for your continued support.

Finally, I would like to thank Debbie and my family for being so supportive of the amount of time that I spend doing my Scouting, and for their understanding.

Ian
