Aims and purposes
The aims and objects of Cockermouth Round Table (CRT) are as follows:
-
To develop the acquaintance of young men through the medium of their various occupations.
-
To emphasise the fact that one’s calling offers an excellent medium of service to the community.
-
To cultivate the highest ideals in business professional and civic traditions.
-
To recognise the worthiness of all legitimate occupations and to dignify each his own precept and example.
-
To further the establishment of peace and goodwill in international relationships.
-
To further these objectives by meetings, lectures, discussions and other activities.
Objectives and Activities
CRT is committed to fun, friendship and trying something new and exciting, from sports to arts and nights out to family social events. CRT prides itself on giving its members the chance to embrace life to the full.
CRT is one of five active Round Tables in Cumbria and has a relatively diverse membership in terms of age range (24-44) and backgrounds although we would like to see further diversification. We pride ourselves on being inclusive, encouraging and positive to all members, their friends and families.
When planning our activities for the year, CRT considered the Commission’s guidance on public benefit. In particular, we try to donate to local activities that create value to the community whilst organising events that help and support a wide variety of different social groups in the local area. This is specifically achieved through encouraging new membership and through specific activities during the year:
-
Organising the Santa’s grotto and float and the distribution of free Christmas presents to young children.
-
Managing the town’s annual beer festival.
-
Social events and trips, including attending events at Cockermouth Rugby Club, local shooting grounds, and local breweries.
To facilitate these activities, it is essential that we maintain the social fabric of the Cockermouth Round Table: fun, friendship and enjoyment! We achieve this through making participation in the above activities as enjoyable and rewarding as possible and by a range of organised and a few ad-hoc social events through the year.
Achievements and Performance
Membership
Membership of CRT increased again in 2024/25 up to a peak of 23; although we are expecting a few people to leave with relocations and family commitments. This still leaves a considerable increase in the past two years and we have 4 active prospective members.
Community support
CRT provided three main community events during the year: The Grotto at light switch on; the Cockermouth Beer Festival and Santa’s sleigh.
CRT participated in the town’s Christmas lights switch-on by organising and running a Santa’s grotto coupled with a mulled wine stall. The Santa sleigh then distributed presents to local children before Christmas. This year we continued to cover Brigham, Great Broughton, Greysouthern and Eaglesfield in addition to Cockermouth town.
All events were well appreciated and well attended.
Community Donations
The CRT made a significant number of donations toward local activities this year totalling £11,170. This was an increase of nearly £7,000 on the previous year (2023/24 £4,226.86). The full details can be found in the notes to the accounts.
Fundraising
There are two main fundraising activities:
Beer Festival
Another excellent year at the beer festival with yet more innovation. A fantastic website and display for TVs around the festival were created by one of the members at a huge financial and environmental saving on the usual programme costs, over 95% of which would end up in landfill.
Costs were higher in several areas this year; venue rent, ticket fees imposed by the venue, and beer costs to name the main contributors, this was despite more free barrels of beer provided by the breweries than the previous years.
The event has continued to deliver strong profits including excellent support from the main sponsor, Cumbrian Ales. Profit was recorded as £8,735.53, this is down on last year but this is due to some of the investments made, increased costs and lower sponsor revenue, which has the potential to improve next year.
Mulled Wine stand
We were once again the chosen option for Cockermouth town’s Christmas lights switch on. With the children encouraged to attend the free grotto, parents could purchase a mulled wine and mince pie from our stand.
We were very grateful again for the support and expertise of the Cockermouth 41 Club in running this, as well as our member, John Coooper for being an excellent Santa again.
Profits were a steady £317.55, with over £800 in sales taken and lots of smiles on people’s faces.
Volunteers
We would like to thank all the Round Table volunteers, XRT West Cumbria and the Cockermouth 41 Club for their support throughout the past year. We hope to further our friendships with on-going events together assisting a seamless transition for members into the different clubs.
Structure, governance and management
The Cockermouth Round Table Charitable Trust is registered with the Charity Commission and is constituted by Deed of Trust. The trustees respectively are the Chairman, ViceChairman, Treasurer and Secretary. These positions and other positions are filled each year at the AGM through membership elections.
Meetings are usually held quarterly. The average level of attendance is generally high. Given its wide range of activities, CRT has a couple of sub-committees which include beer festival and Christmas. The convenors of these committees are responsible to CRT and report back to it regularly.
The CRT members collectively are responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concern and importance to the community including deciding on how the funds of CRT are to be spent. CRT encourages requests from the local community and amongst other criteria, takes into considering such factors as location, ethics, impact and benefits when deciding on distributing donations and grants.
Cockermouth Round Table have made increased use of online tools such as the implementation of ‘cloud-based’ storage and digital channels. The OneDrive can be accessed through Cockermouth Round Tables Outlook Account which also has our email: CockermouthRoundTable@Live.co.uk . Additionally, we use WhatsApp and Spond as a mechanism for sharing information and organising events.
Financial review
Total receipts in the year totalled £25,146.46 a similar amount to the previous year (2023/24: £26,134.48)
Expenses greatly increased over the previous year at £27,577 (2023/24: £15,655.27) attributable to a much greater amount of donations made as well as higher beer festival costs, mentioned previously. Overall, CRT achieved a net loss of £2,431.69.
During the year a total of £11,170.00 was distributed to local good causes with full details outlined below (see ‘ Notes to the Accounts’)

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of COCKERMOUTH ROUND TABLE CHARITABLE TRUST Charity Number 1056818
I report on the accounts of the company for the year ended 31 March 2025.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The trustees (who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of company law) are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. The charity’s gross income was below £250,000 and I am qualified to undertake the examination by:
-
Being independent of and its directors.
-
Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant on 1 December 1991.
-
Having relevant professional experience since 1991, including having been Secretary of Copeland Mind, having held various trustee roles in Cockermouth Round Table and other organisations which report to the Charities Commission.
Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:
-
Examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act.
-
Follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.
-
State whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner’s statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the following requirements have not been met:
-
To keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act.
-
To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act, or
-
To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
