## **Aims and purposes**

The aims and objects of Cockermouth Round Table (CRT) are as follows:

1. To develop the acquaintance of young men through the medium of their various occupations.

2. To emphasise the fact that one’s calling offers an excellent medium of service to the community.

3. To cultivate the highest ideals in business professional and civic traditions.

4. To recognise the worthiness of all legitimate occupations and to dignify each his own precept and example.

5. To further the establishment of peace and goodwill in international relationships.

6. To further these objectives by meetings, lectures, discussions and other activities.

## **Objectives and Activities**

The CRT is committed to fun, friendship and trying something new and exciting, from sports to arts and nights out to family social events, CRT prides itself on giving its members the chance to embrace life to the full.

Cockermouth Round Table is one of five Round Tables in Cumbria and we are delighted to see the formation of a new club in Wigton. CRT has a relatively diverse membership in terms of age range (23-44) and backgrounds although we would like to see further diversification. We pride ourselves on being inclusive, encouraging and positive to all members, their friends and families.

When planning our activities for the year, CRT considered the Commission’s guidance on public benefit. In particular, we try to donate to local activities that create value to the community whilst organising events that help and support a wide variety of different social groups in the local area. This is specifically achieved through encouraging new membership and through specific activities during the year:

- Organising the Santa’s grotto and float and the distribution of free Christmas presents to young children.

- Managing the town’s annual beer festival

- Social events and trips

To facilitate these activities, it is essential that we maintain the social fabric of the Cockermouth Round Table: fun, friendship and enjoyment! We achieve this through making participation in the above activities as enjoyable and rewarding as possible and by a range of organised and ad-hoc social events through the year.

## **Achievements and Performance**

_Membership_

Membership of CRT increased considerably in 2023/24 up to 15 with one member retiring (Mark Hawthorn), and through support from the National board we anticipate further growth in the year to come.

## _Community support_

The CRT provided three main community events during the year: The Grotto at light switch on; the Cockermouth Beer Festival and Santa’s sleigh.

CRT participated in the town’s Christmas lights switch-on by organising and running a Santa’s grotto coupled with a mulled wine stall. The Santa sleigh then distributed presents to local children before Christmas. This year we continued to cover Brigham, Great Broughton, Greysouthern and Eaglesfield in addition to Cockermouth town. The beer festival is covered in more detail under fundraising.

All events were well appreciated and well attended.

## _Community Donations_

The CRT made a significant number of donations toward local activities this year totalling £4,226.86. This was an increase on the previous year (2022/23 £3,659). The full details can be found in the notes to the accounts.

## _Fundraising_

There were two main fundraising activities:

## _Beer Festival_

A fantastic year at the beer festival, helped by much higher sponsor numbers and reduced printing costs with an online digital programme, as well as 3 out of the 4 sessions being sold out.

The event has continued to deliver strong profits with additional revenue with the ‘Win a years supply of Beer’ raffle. Profit was £13,216.91 which will be of huge benefit to the local community in the coming year.

## _Mulled wine stand at light’s switch on_

It was a rainy afternoon so footfall wasn’t what it has been. Including generous donations in the ‘bucket’ both at the grotto behind the mulled wine stand and the santa sleigh, we still made profit of £1,257.19.

## _Sports and social_

This year we increased the focus on having a social programme for current members, but with the aim of increasing new members to Cockermouth Round Table. Active membership has doubled over the year, with more younger members joining too, helping to sustain the club into the future.

## **Volunteers**

We would like to thank all the volunteers, friends and the 41 Club of Cockermouth who work so hard to make the events of the last twelve months happen. Without their help, the Cockermouth Round Table Charity Trust would not have been able make the level of donations this year. We would also like to thank Mr Ricky Skelton of Marra Motors for his incredible work on upgrading the sleigh and towing the sleigh around all weekend.

## **Structure, governance and management**

The Cockermouth Round Table Charitable Trust is registered with the Charity Commissioners and is constituted by Deed of Trust.

Meetings are usually held quarterly. The average level of attendance has increased in line with membership numbers increasing. Given its wide range of activities, the CRT has a number of committees which include fundraising, beer festival, donations and social activities. The convenors of these committees are responsible to the CRT and report back to it regularly.

The CRT members collectively are responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concern and importance to the community including deciding on how the funds of the CRT are to be spent. The CRT encourages requests from the local community and amongst other criteria, takes into considering such factors as location, ethics, impact, benefits when deciding on distributing donations and grants.

In recent times Cockermouth Round Table have made increased use of online tools such as the implementation of ‘cloud-based’ storage and digital channels. The OneDrive can be accessed through Cockermouth Round Tables Outlook Account which also has our email: CockermouthRoundTable@Live.co.uk. Furthermore, we have used WhatsApp as a mechanism for sharing information and holding ‘virtual discussions’. Spond has also been used this year to aid programme management and communication.

## **Financial review**

Total receipts in the year totalled £26,134.48 a near £8K increase on previous years due to the increased takings at the beer festival.

Expenses decreased over previous years at £15,655, the decreased costs reflect savings made at the beer festival plus also not putting on the OAP coach trip this year.

Overall we achieved a net surplus of £10,479.21. The main reason behind this being the higher profits from the beer festival

During the year a total of £4,226.86 was distributed to local good causes including the purchase of the toys for Christmas (Cockermouth Toy Shop £1676.86).

## **Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of COCKERMOUTH ROUND TABLE CHARITABLE TRUST Charity Number 1056818**

I report on the accounts of the company for the year ended 31 March 2024.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The trustees (who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of company law) are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. The charity’s gross income was below £250,000 and I am qualified to undertake the examination by:

- Being independent of and its directors.

- Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant on 1 December 1991.

- Having relevant professional experience since 1991, including having been Secretary of Copeland Mind, having held various trustee roles in Cockermouth Round Table and other organisations which report to the Charities Commission.

Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:

- Examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act.

- Follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.

- State whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner’s report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the following requirements have not been met:

   - To keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act.

   - To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act, or

2. To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
