CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT – September 1[st] 2024 – August 31st 2025

Chairperson: Ray Dowling

Trustees: Steffi Roscoe

Treasurer: Richard Barnes

Paula Dinwoodie

Secretary: Charlotte Fisher

This has been the first year that Paula and Steffi have led the setting, and several changes have been made to the way it is run. Paula has taken on the role of Business Lead, while Steffi has been the Early Years Lead.

The Committee has remained the same and has provided excellent support to the Leads throughout the year.

The new academic year started reasonably busily, and we welcomed more children as the year progressed. We have seen an increasing number of two-year-olds joining the setting, which suggests that the changes made to accommodate this younger age group have been effective and beneficial for the nursery.

During the year, it was agreed by all involved that the name "Playgroup" no longer reflected the setting and the services we provide. As a result, we’ll be looking at rebranding from Playgroup to Nursery and Pre-School. This change will hopefully take place in the next academic year, alongside the name change, we will look at introducing a lovely new logo to help to create a fresh and modern identity for the setting.

As in previous years, we held several transition events with the Infant School, including participation in their Sports Morning. These events helped to strengthen links with the school and support children as they prepared for their next stage of education.

Overall, it has been a positive, peaceful, and largely uneventful year at St Mary's. The nursery has continued to grow steadily, and we look forward to building on this success in the coming year.

Treasurer’s Report – September 1st 2024- August 31[st] 2025

As with each academic year we always face challenges with increasing running costs – National Minimum Wage, utilities and funding for the children from the government. This year was no different.

Apart from replacing the outdoor shed, we had no planned maintenance this year. We had just completed our first year with the early opening time and taking the 2yr olds for the second year. It was a good time to see how our finances were running.

Child numbers for September were a little disappointing due to several of our 3yr olds moving on to a different setting. We were left with 17 children on roll. Good news that half of them were 2yr olds accessing the funding which helped boost our first term payment up to Christmas.

Our 5yr gas contract came to an end and we locked into another 3yr contract but with higher rates.

Fund raising bought in just over £399.60 (net). This was from our annual Christmas wreath making and a couple of cake sales. We had a very generous donation from Aberdeen Insurance of £3,000.00 that went towards our new shed that had taken a battering from the weather over the years. Local company Spirax Sarco donated £150.00, which was used to provide the children with some magnetic building tiles.

National minimum wage was increased in the spring to £12.21 up from £11.44. We increased our hourly charge to £6.30 (£6.00) to help bridge the gap. Our funded 2yr olds were also contributing to this with the higher rate that they bought in from the government. £2 more than the 3/4yr olds.

At the beginning of 2025 we joined with two other local settings to provide a before and after school hub for the local parents. We benefited from this with funding from the local council.

This will inflate our Income figures, but the funding must be spent on provision to benefit the afterschool club that we will provide

St Mary’s started the financial year with £10,339.09 in our current bank account and £2,757.23 in our savings account. Our aim is to build up our reserves over the coming year to be able to cover running costs for at least a month. We ended the year with £50,509.47 in our main account. This does include the extra income from the after-school club funding.
