Young Asian Voices – Annual Report and Accounts – Year Ending 31[st] March 2021 - Charity No. 1054783

Trustees Report

The Trustees present their report and financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2021.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the financial statements and comply with the Trust's governing document, the Charities Act 2011 and "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (as amended for accounting periods commencing from 1 January 2016).

Objectives and activities

The object of the charity is to pursue any charitable object calculated to benefit the community, in particular the young Asian members.

Young Asian Voices works towards equality of opportunity and social justice for all people in the City of Sunderland irrespective of race, ethnicity, class gender, sexual orientation or cultural background. The charity conducts operations with these principles in mind. It believes that positive and constructive relationships must be developed between all different communities in Sunderland. They seek co-operative and fraternal partnerships with individuals, organisations and community groups that hold similar values and principles.

The Trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the Trust should undertake, in particular the Commission's guidance on public benefit.

The Charity continues to further develop Youth committees, Youth Voice and a Volunteer Project. In response to the continuing demand of the minority groups within the area, the charity has provided sport, centre based and out of centre sessions to various groups within the Sunderland.

There has been an increase in demand for junior membership, young volunteers, women and young girls group work throughout the year. The programmes offered have been to help develop their Employability and Social skills and continue with issue-based work and sports sessions such as fitness for adult women and men. This pattern of increase in demand continues as there are more people interested in joining YAV and accessing services.

YAV played an active role in city culture and diversity events throughout the year and has been seen as a leading organisation for delivering youth and community work within marginalised committees. The charity continues to be supported strongly by Volunteers and Staff in carrying out its work and this has been highly appreciated by Staff, Management committee and everyone involved in the Charity.

Financial review

The management committee are fully involved in developing action plans and fundraising plans to focus on the future development of the Charity.

The Charity's core focus during the year continued to be the provision of youth sessions and activities.

Total funds stand at £110,397 (2020 - £32,992), with free reserves standing at £55,423 (2020 – negative £15,733).

Fund Policy

It is the policy of the Trust that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should be maintained at a level equivalent to between three and six month’s unrestricted expenditure. The Trustees considers that reserves at this level will ensure that, in the event of a significant drop in funding, they will be able to continue the Trust’s current activities while consideration is given to ways in which additional funds may be raised.

Structure, governance and management

Young Asian Voices (also known as "YAV"), is constituted under a trust deed dated 18th February 1996.

Trustees are nominated / removed from the board by existing members. New members take part in introduction procedures which involves identifying any training needs and outlining their roles and responsibilities.

The trustees report was approved by the Board of Trustees:

Notes to the Financial Statements

Accounting Policies

Charity information

Young Asian Voices (also known as "YAV"), is constituted under a trust deed dated 18th February 1996.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Trust's governing document, the Charities Act 2011 and "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (as amended for accounting periods commencing from 1 January 2016). The Trust is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.

The financial statements have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a true and fair view. This departure has involved following the Statement of Recommended Practice for charities applying FRS 102 rather than the version of the Statement of Recommended Practice which is referred to in the Regulations but which has since been withdrawn.

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the Trust. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, modified to include the revaluation of freehold properties and to include investment properties and certain financial instruments at fair value. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.

Going Concern

At the time of approving the financial statements, the Trustees have a reasonable expectation that the Trust has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus, the Trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

Charitable Funds

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the Trustees in furtherance of their charitable objectives.

Restricted funds are subject to specific conditions by donors as to how they may be used. The purposes and uses of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.

Designated funds relate to the purchase of tangible assets to be used for charitable purposes as laid down by the donor.

Income

Income received by way of donations and grants is included in full in the Statement of Financial Activities when receivable.

Young Asian Voices – Annual Report and Accounts – Year Ending 31[st] March 2021 - Charity No. 1054783

When donors specify the donations and grants, including capital grants, are for particular restricted purposes, which do not amount to pre-conditions regarding entitlement, this income is included in incoming resources of restricted funds when receivable.

The value of services provided by volunteers has not been included.

Interest is included when receivable by the charity.

Expenditure

Expenditure is included on an accrual’s basis.

Governance costs are those incurred in connection with the administration of the charity and the compliance with constitutional and statutory requirements.

Tangible fixed assets

Tangible fixed assets are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost or valuation, net of depreciation and any impairment losses.

Depreciation is recognised so as to write off the cost or valuation of assets less their residual values over their useful lives on the following bases:

Fixtures, fittings & equipment 25% reducing balance. Motor vehicles 25% reducing balance.

The gain or loss arising on the disposal of an asset is determined as the difference between the sale proceeds and the carrying value of the asset and is recognised in net income/(expenditure) for the year.

Taxation

The Trust is a registered charity and is not liable to United Kingdom income or corporation tax on charitable activities, provided income falls within the charitable exemptions and is spent on charitable purposes.

Donations and Legacies

In 2021 £4,342 was unrestricted and £0 was restricted
