Welcome to The Princess Alexandra Hospital Charity Annual Report for 2024-25 .
It’s a privilege to reflect on a year filled with generosity, compassion, and community spirit. Between April 2024 and March 2025, our charity raised an incredible £835,000, a figure that represents far more than just numbers. It reflects so many acts of kindness, each one rooted in gratitude for the care received at our hospital.
This year, we’ve seen local businesses host fundraising events, schools and community groups come together at Christmas, and individuals take on personal challenges to give back. We’ve opened the Macmillan Cancer Information Centre, supported the creation of therapeutic gardens, and funded equipment that brings comfort and dignity to patients and their families.
Behind every donation is a story. A moment of care remembered. A life touched. And it is these stories that continue to inspire our work and remind us why this charity matters so deeply to so many.
We’ve also taken important steps forward as an organisation. With a new team in place and a refreshed strategy, we’re building a stronger, more sustainable charity. One that’s better equipped to support our patients, our people, and our community for years to come.

Celebrating your impact
This year (2024 - 25), we’ve been deeply moved by the incredible generosity shown by our patients, their loved ones, and our amazing hospital community. Whether through heartfelt donations or creative fundraising efforts, every act of kindness has been a tribute to the care received at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust.
Thanks to your support, our charity has been able to make a significant difference for patients, visitors, and staff alike.

Spreading joy, one egg at a time
For the fifth year running, Greater Anglia staff and passengers have brought Easter cheer to young patients at Princess Alexandra Hospital. In 2024, they delivered over 600 chocolate eggs, sweet treats, and activity kits to the Dolphin Ward and paediatric emergency department, each one a symbol of kindness and community spirit.
Led by Michael King (pictured right), a relief ticket office clerk, the initiative has become a heartwarming tradition. Donations poured in from stations across the region, with staff even raising funds to buy extra goodies. It’s more than just chocolate, it’s a moment of joy during challenging times, a reminder that people care.
“Our customers and colleagues are always very eager to help wherever they can for such a good cause,” said Michael King. “Hopefully it puts a smile on unwell children’s faces and makes their Easter a little happier.”
We’re incredibly grateful to Michael, his colleagues, and Greater Anglia’s generous customers for their continued support and kindness.
Running for comfort and care
In an emotional tribute, Molly Babuniak took on a 100km running challenge in memory of her father, who sadly passed away from cancer at The Princess Alexandra Hospital. Her incredible effort raised £1,933 to support the Butterfly Hub and fund portable beds, helping families stay close to loved ones during end-of-life care. Her story is a moving reminder of how personal experiences can inspire lasting impact.
Molly’s journey was more than a physical challenge; it was a powerful act of love and gratitude. The funds raised will help create more compassionate spaces and provide comfort when it’s needed most.
“The Butterfly Hub gave my dad dignity and peace in his final days,” said Molly. “This challenge was my way of giving something back and helping other families going through the same.”
We are so grateful to Molly for her strength, generosity, and determination.
A community united in gratitude
In a moving tribute to the care received at The Princess Alexandra Hospital, Paul Barnett and his wife Amanda raised over £11,000 for our Critical Care Unit following Paul’s recovery from sepsis. Their fundraising event, hosted at The White Lion in Hertford, brought together friends, family, and the wider community in a celebration of life and compassion. From signed memorabilia to live music by Paul’s band ‘The Wayward Sons’, the evening was filled with generosity and joy. Every donation reflected the deep appreciation for the care Paul and his family received.

Opening doors to compassionate cancer support
The Princess Alexandra Hospital opened its new Macmillan Cancer Information Centre, a welcoming space designed to support anyone affected by cancer. Jointly funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and The Princess Alexandra Hospital Charity, the centre is located within the Williams Day Unit and offers emotional, practical, and financial guidance.
Open to all - patients, families, friends, and carers - the centre offers access to services including complementary therapies from the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity, hair loss support from Cancer Hair Care, and welfare advice from Citizens Advice Bureau.
This project highlights the power of community organisations working together to provide holistic, person-centred support, so everyone affected by cancer can access the help they need in one supportive and accessible space.
It’s a brilliant example of partnership in action, putting people at the heart of care.
A partnership rooted in gratitude
We’re proud to announce a new three-year partnership with Full Vision Ltd, whose support will help transform care in our neonatal unit. Inspired by the life-saving treatment their premature twins received at 31 weeks, Full Vision has pledged to raise vital funds for the unit through a series of charity events. Their commitment reflects a deep and personal connection to our hospital and the incredible Neonatal team who provide specialist care for our tiniest patients.
Sam Tanner, Full Vision’s Managing Director, shared: “The support we received was incredible at such a challenging time, and now we are delighted to have signed a formal partnership to continue making a difference for a unit that has a special place in our hearts.”
We are truly grateful to Sam, the Full Vision team, and their community of supporters for standing alongside us in our mission to provide outstanding care to every family, every day.

Spurs legends spread festive cheer
Just days before Christmas, Tottenham Hotspur legends Ledley King, Ossie Ardiles, and Gary Mabbutt brought festive joy to The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. Their visit was a genuine gesture to thank staff for their dedication and compassion throughout the year, especially those working over the holidays. The Club donated a range of thoughtful gifts to be shared across hospital departments.
The visit was a powerful reminder of the community’s appreciation for NHS staff who give so much, often at the expense of time with their own families. Gary Mabbutt expressed the Club’s sentiment beautifully: “It was important for us as a Club to recognise the incredible work that heroic staff across our local hospitals are doing, not only during the Christmas period, but throughout the year.
We are grateful to Tottenham Hotspur Football Club for bringing festive cheer and appreciation to our dedicated teams.
Celebrating community support at Christmas
From joyful carol singing by local schools, Christmas tree donations from companies, to generous donations of gifts and time, our community truly came together to support The Princess Alexandra Hospital Charity this Christmas. Thank you, your kindness made a real difference.

We’re inspired by the generosity of schools, businesses, and volunteers who brought joy and comfort to patients and our staff.
Creating calm: New therapeutic gardens at PAH
Work is underway to transform underused areas of The Princess Alexandra Hospital into beautiful therapeutic gardens, thanks to an £88,000 grant from NHS Charities Together, match funded by our hospital charity. These new spaces will offer patients, visitors, carers, and staff a peaceful environment to pause, reflect, and recharge.
The development includes a sensory garden to support patients living with dementia, a garden of reflection, and a dedicated staff space. Over 130 trees and 2,000 shrubs have also been secured to enhance the natural surroundings and create a more welcoming atmosphere across the site.
These gardens will provide a lasting legacy of care and compassion, supporting wellbeing and recovery in a truly memorable way. We’re excited to see the difference they will make for everyone who visits or works at our hospital.
We are delighted to be supporting this very worthwhile project.
A gift of precision and care
Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Sherrie Dobson from Chigwell, The Princess Alexandra Hospital has welcomed a new vein finder machine to its Radiology department. Sherrie, who has bravely faced multiple forms of cancer over 25 years, helped to fundraise £365 and personally donated £5,365 to fund the specialist equipment.
It will help staff deliver quicker, more comfortable imaging experiences, improving care for patients who may otherwise face repeated attempts and discomfort. It’s a transformative addition to the department, reflecting lived experience and a deep appreciation for the compassion shown by hospital teams.
Sherrie shared: “Chemotherapy treatment and blood tests over the years have made my veins very difficult to locate, and I am always so grateful to the staff at PAHT for their patience. This specialist piece of equipment will not only help staff, but will mean people like myself can have their imaging taken much more easily.”
Thank you to Sherrie for her generous support and the difference her gift will make to patient care.
A birthday gift of gratitude
To mark their son Leo’s first birthday, local residents Katie and Jordan raised £300 for the Maternity Ward at The Princess Alexandra Hospital. Their touching donation was a thank you for the exceptional care Katie and Leo received during a challenging birth and recovery.
Katie said “We decided to raise money for the Maternity Ward to say thank you for the wonderful care that I received while at the hospital…Each day and night nurses would care for us both and showed me incredible kindness.”
Marking Leo’s first birthday in this special way will help support more new beginnings.
Bidfood UK: Giving Back Locally
A big thank you to the team at Bidfood UK for raising £112 through their company raffle in support of our charity. Their kind words and continued support reflect the strong bond between our hospital and the local community.
“As an organisation, we feel at our happiest supporting Princess Alexandra Hospital…PAH is a great support system and network for those locally, and we feel deserves as much credit as possible. Making a Splash for Dolphin Ward
We’re thrilled to celebrate the incredible efforts of The Bishop’s Stortford College, whose students and staff came together to raise an outstanding £5,025 for our children’s ward. Their fun-filled fundraising week was bursting with creativity and community spirit. From a vibrant blue non-uniform day to an imaginative “Under the Sea” cake competition, and the ever-popular “Splash the Cash” soak-a-teacher event. Every activity was met with enthusiasm and heart, making waves of difference for the young patients we care for. Their support not only brought smiles to the ward but also strengthened the bond between our hospital and the wider community.
Their efforts have provided vital support to the Dolphin Ward, enhancing care for our young patients.
United in purpose – events supporting our hospital charity
This year, our incredible supporters went above and beyond to raise funds for the breast unit charitable fund at The Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust. From themed parties to mountain treks, each event was a beautiful reflection of community, courage, and compassion. Here are a few highlights from the year.
Kilimanjaro trek
A team of 24 (pictured top right), including a trek doctor, took on the extreme challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Over seven days of camping and high-altitude trekking, their determination never wavered. Several participants had a personal connection to breast cancer, which made every step a powerful act of support for breast cancer care at PAHT.
Royal Berkshire charity shoot
Our 11th annual clay pigeon shoot at The Royal Berkshire Shooting School welcomed 25 teams and raised a phenomenal £72,000. Guests enjoyed a full day of sport, hospitality, and a luxury auction featuring unforgettable experiences.
Mamma Mia night
Ahead of their October challenge, participants of the Angkor Wat Cambodia Trek organised a lively Mamma Mia-themed evening to kickstart their fundraising. With 100 guests enjoying Greek entertainment, a DJ, and a silent auction, the event raised an incredible £14,000. A joyful celebration of community spirit and generosity.
House of Commons charity dinner
Hosted by Baroness Lady Eleanor Laing DBE, this elegant evening at the Palace of Westminster brought together guests for an unforgettable night of dining and fundraising. Mr Ashraf Patel MBE, Associate Specialist in Breast Surgery, delivered a moving speech that highlighted the importance of the charity’s work on patients and families. (Pictured bottom right)
Each event this year was a testament to the power of community and the deep compassion people feel for those affected by breast cancer. We are profoundly grateful to every participant, sponsor, and supporter who made these moments possible.

The majority of the contributions to the charity, £545,900 (65%) , were in relation to the Breast Unit through donations and fundraising events.
We extend our sincere thanks to Mr Ashraf Patel MBE, Associate Specialist in Breast Surgery, (pictured below) for his unwavering commitment to our charity and the Breast Unit. His dedication, alongside the incredible generosity of our donors and supporters, has been instrumental in the success of recent fundraising events.

In total, we spent £613,000 in line with our charitable objectives, making a real tangible difference across the hospital. This compares with £584,000 spent last year. To keep the momentum going, we invested £215,000 in fundraising activities, which generated £835,000 in income. In 2023-24, we spent £192,000 on fundraising, raising £410,000 in return. Risk management
We take risk seriously, because protecting our charity’s reputation, income, and impact is essential to everything we do. All major risks have been carefully identified and reviewed, with robust systems in place to manage and mitigate them. As part of the Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust (PAHT), the charity benefits from its established financial control framework, adding an extra layer of assurance.
Currently, the most significant risks identified are:

fundraising events not overseen by the charity that may pose reputational or financial risks
We do not hold investment assets, so there is no exposure to portfolio-related risks. Instead, we focus on maintaining strong financial discipline. Spending and commitments are closely aligned with income, and our Charitable Funds Committee monitors income and expenditure quarterly to spot trends early and prevent unexpected pressure on reserves. All financial governance follows PAHT’s standing financial instructions, ensuring transparency, accountability, and control at every step.

About us
Founded on 21 March 1996 under a trust deed and registered with the Charity Commission (No. 1054745), The Princess Alexandra Hospital Charity exists to make an impactful difference to patient care and staff wellbeing across The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT).
What we do
Through fundraising events, appeals, and generous donations, we enhance the quality of care and patient experience by funding vital services and resources that fall outside the scope of central NHS funding. We also champion the health and wellbeing of PAHT staff, recognising that great care starts with a supported workforce.
Governance and public benefit
The PAHT Board ensures that all charitable activities align with the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit, both in current operations and future planning. The board holds the charitable fund and applies income to any purpose that supports the NHS, in line with charitable objectives.
Trustees are members of the PAHT Board, which acts as the sole corporate trustee of the charity. Appointments to the Board are made in line with NHS Trust governance procedures, based on relevant experience and alignment with organisational values. New members receive an induction covering their responsibilities, including those under charity law and NHS governance.
Within the charity, there are multiple designated funds, each overseen by a fund manager. While internal criteria guide how these funds are spent, they are not legally binding. What matters most is that public donations are used appropriately and respectfully, reflecting the intent of our donors.
Unless funds are raised for a specific long-term purpose, we aim to spend donations within three years, ensuring timely impact rather than accumulation.
Oversight & accountability
To ensure transparency and effective stewardship, the Board has formally established a Charitable Funds Committee. The committee is accountable to the Board, and oversees the management of charitable funds and fundraising activities, ensuring every pound raised is used wisely and well. The committee provides assurance on governance, financial stewardship, and alignment with charitable objectives, with all decisions subject to Board oversight and approval where required.

Charitable funds committee
The Charitable Funds Committee plays a vital role in ensuring our charity is managed with integrity, transparency, and care. Formally established and accountable to the Corporate Trustee (our Board of Directors), the committee provides assurance on how our charitable resources are governed and controlled. Their oversight helps safeguard our mission and ensures every decision reflects our values and responsibilities. Meet the 2024-25 committee members:

Statement of trustee’s responsibilities
Under charity law, the trust board are responsible for preparing the trustee’s Annual Report and Accounts for each financial year that show a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of any excess of expenditure over income for that period. In preparing these financial statements, generally accepted accounting practice requires that the board of directors:

The trust board are required to act in accordance with the trust deed and the rules of the charity within the framework of trust law. The trust board are responsible for keeping proper accounting records, sufficient to disclose at any time, with reasonable accuracy, the financial position of the charity at that time, and to enable the trust board to ensure that, where any statements of accounts are prepared by the trust board under section 132(1) of the Charities Act 2011. Those directors have general responsibility for taking such steps as are reasonably open to the trust board to safeguard the assets of the charity and detect fraud and other irregularities.
The trust board confirms that they have met the responsibilities set out above and complied with the requirements for preparing the accounts. The financial statements set out from pages 22 to 31 have been compiled from and are in accordance with the financial records maintained by the trust board.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust Charitable Fund
I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust Charitable Fund (‘the charity’) for the year ended 31 March 2025 which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities, the Balance Sheet, the Statement of Cash Flows and related notes.
This report is made solely to the charity’s trustees, as a body, in accordance with section 145 of the Charities Act 2011. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the charity’s trustees those matters I am required to state to them in this report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and the charity’s trustees as a body, for my work, for this report, or for the opinions I have formed.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s financial statements carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
An independent examination does not involve gathering all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently does not cover all the matters that an auditor considers in giving their opinion on the financial statements. The planning and conduct of an audit goes beyond the limited assurance that an independent examination can provide. Consequently I express no opinion as to whether the financial statements present a ‘true and fair’ view and my report is limited to those specific matters set out in the independent examiner’s statement.
Independent examiner’s statement
Since the Charity’s gross income exceeded £250,000 your examiner must be a member of a body listed in section 145 of the 2011. I confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, which is one of the listed bodies.
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or
-
the financial statements do not accord with those records; or
-
the financial statements do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.

Notes to the accounts
1. Accounting policies
1.1. Accounting convention
The financial statements have been prepared under the historic cost convention. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011, and UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice as it applies from 1 January 2015. The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.
The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the charity’s ability to continue as a going concern. There are no material uncertainties affecting the current year's accounts.
1.2. Structure of funds
The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust Charitable Fund is registered as an umbrella fund, encompassing three unrestricted special funds whose names and objectives are:
The Princess Alexandra Hospital Charity
For any charitable purpose or purposes relating to the National Health Service wholly or mainly for the service provided by The Princess Alexandra Hospital.
The St Margaret's Hospital general fund
For any charitable purpose or purposes relating to the National Health Service wholly or mainly for the service provided by the St Margaret's Hospital.
The Herts and Essex Hospital general fund
For any charitable purpose or purposes relating to the National Health Service wholly or mainly for the service provided by the Herts and Essex Hospital.
1.3. Income recognition
All income is recognised and included in full in the Statement of Financial Activities as soon as the following three factors can be met:

Entitlement: control over the rights or other access to the economic benefit has passed to the charity.
-
Probable: it is more likely than not that the economic benefits associated with the transaction or gift will flow to the charity.
-
Measurement: the monetary value or amount of both the income and the costs to complete the transaction can be measured reliably.
Income from legacies are accounted for as incoming resources once the receipt of the legacy becomes probable. This will be once confirmation has been received from the representatives of the estates that payment of the legacy will be made or property transferred and once all conditions attached to the legacy have been fulfilled or are within the charity's control to fulfil. The charity received no gifts in kind.
1.4. Expenditure recognition
All expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all costs related to each category of expense shown in the Statement of Financial Activities. Expenditure is recognised when the following criteria are met:
- there is a present legal or constructive obligation resulting from a past event
• it is more likely than not that a transfer of benefits (usually a cash payment) will be required in settlement
• the amount of the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Irrecoverable VAT is charged against the category of resources expended for which it was incurred.
Grants payable are payments made to third parties (including NHS bodies) in the furtherance of the charitable objectives. They are accounted for on an accruals basis where the conditions for their payment have been met or where a third party has a reasonable expectation that they will receive the grant. This includes grants paid to NHS bodies.
Support costs are those costs that do not relate directly to a single activity. These include some staff costs, costs of administration and internal and external examination/audit costs. Support costs have been apportioned between fundraising costs and charitable activities based on fund balances. Support and governance costs are apportioned across all funds based on the average fund balance for the year.
Costs of charitable activities comprise all costs in the pursuit of the charitable objectives of the Charity. These costs, where not wholly attributable, are apportioned between the categories of expense in addition to the direct costs. The total costs of each category of expense include an apportionment of support costs as shown in note 8.
1.5. Realised gains and losses
There are no realised gains or losses in 2024-25 (nil in 2023-24).
1.6. Debtors
Debtors are amounts owed to the charity. They are measured on the basis of their recoverable amount. There are no amounts which are owed in more than a year.
1.7. Financial Instruments
Cash at bank and in hand is held to meet the day-to-day running costs of the charity as they fall due. Cash equivalents are short term, highly liquid investments.
1.8. Creditors
Creditors are amounts owed by the charity. They are measured at the amount that the Charity expects to have to pay to settle the debt. There are no amounts which are owed in more than a year.
2. Related Party Transactions
The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust manages the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust Charitable Fund, a corporate body established by order of the Secretary of State for Health. As such, the trust is the ultimate controlling party and the trust board of the charity are the directors of the trust, as detailed in page 18 of the Annual Report and Accounts.
The main beneficiaries of the charity are the patients, staff and visitors of The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. The charity has provided grant funding for items purchased on behalf of these beneficiaries totalling £398k (£392k in 2023-24) as detailed in note 7 of these accounts. As at year end, the Charity owed the Trust £378k (£467K in 2023-24) as detailed in note 14 of these accounts. There is a £70k debtor balance with the Trust at year end (£83k in 2023-24). Expenditure of the charity is considered to be a grant to The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust, as the staff, patients and visitors of the trust are the ultimate beneficiaries. The trust board received no remuneration or re-imbursement of expenses from the charitable fund during 2024-25 (nil in 202324).

4. Income from other trading activities
Income relates to funds received from fundraising events (and where VAT is not chargeable). The charity receives no income from "trading" (i.e. from the sale of merchandise), nil trading income in 2023-24.

There were no grants made payable to individuals during 2024-25 (nil in 2023-24). All grants are made to The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust to provide for the care of NHS patients, and the welfare of its staff and visitors. The trust board give their time freely and receive no remuneration for the work that they undertake as trustees.
