- All our donations are directed through a properly constituted Indian Registered charity, The Institute for Rural Development Trust (IRDT).

## **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document** 

The relief of poverty and sickness (whether physical or mental), the advancement of education and the preservation of good health, primarily but not exclusively amongst those persons residing in and around the village of Mettupalayam and the district of Chengalpattu, South India. 

## **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** 

Financing and supporting the provision of primary school education, with open access to all children living in our catchment areas. We particularly encourage children from tribal communities who are not generally encouraged into the state education system. 

Provision of bursaries to enable disadvantaged pupils to continue to higher education. This includes both tribal children and those whose parents cannot afford school expenses. 

Initiating, organising and supporting primarily women’s self-help groups for social and economic development.

Promoting healthcare through education, facilitation and the organisation of health camps and providing financial support to individuals for medical purposes. This is particularly aimed at illiterate and/or socially disadvantaged villagers and tribal communities. 

Supporting, organising and facilitating disability services including help to gain access to Government grants, pensions and entitlements. 

Providing services to the elderly, including a daily food programme and clothing provision. 

The Trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

We are entirely run by volunteers and all UK expenses are covered by Trustees’ donations, so that every penny donated is received in India.

**Summary of the main** This year was an extraordinary one, due to the impact of Covid- **achievements of the** 19. It meant that none of the Trustees was able to visit the **charity during the year** project and that we utilised video calls as a key means of support and communication. Through our team at the project we initiated a major programme of food aid for the local population. Lockdowns meant that local people lost their employment and means of income with most families living on a week-to- week basis. At the height of the pandemic, we provided food for 1500 local needy families and our project and schools remained open while others closed – a testament to our project director, his team, and the teaching staff. We also provided advice on Covid precautions and encouraged uptake of the vaccine, when it was made available. Provision of a high standard of primary school education to around 65 children at the Crakehall School at Mettupalayam and a further 35 children at the Nambikki School at Palayanadukuppam. Our schools remained open unless there were state-wide mandatory closures, whilst most schools were closed for most of the year. We continue to encourage and embrace the local gypsy/tribal community who can suffer discrimination in this area. Ten years ago, only 20% of these children attended school – this has now over 90%. We continue to support former pupils from the Tribal community who have successfully gained entry to Further Education Colleges to study Engineering and Arts degrees. 

A  high  standard  of  nutritional  school  meals,  provided  daily, using local produce, some grown on our own farm employing local labour. 

Ongoing support for healthcare and the disabled, working with a local doctor, local Lions and Rotary clubs to supply weekly health clinics, eye clinics and the provision of therapy and wheelchairs for local disabled people. 

Continued support to women’s groups to gain financial aid to promote small business development; and to local farmers by support in gaining preferential loans. 

Continued provision of health and nutrition support to people from neighbouring villages 

Ongoing support for the elderly, including meals, healthcare and clothing.

**Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves** 

**Details of any funds materially in deficit** 

We do not plan to build up reserves of funds in the UK as we wish to expedite the use of all donations excepting that, from time to time, we do build up funds for planned capital expenditure, and also keep a general reserve to meet fluctuations in both the level of donations and also the level of running costs (particularly relevant and useful this year due to Nonethe extra costs incurred due to the pandemic). We have no specially allocated reserves.

We target regular monthly donations of between ½ and 2/3rds of the total monthly running costs at any one time. The majority of funding comes from personal donors with a small percentage from UK schools.

**Respective** The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. **responsibilities of** The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year **trustees and examiner** under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: 

- examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act, 

- to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and 

- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

**Basis of independent examiner’s statement** 

- My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission.  An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records.  It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters.  The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
