Annual Report April 2022 - March 2023
Focus on Young People in Bassetlaw is a registered charity established in 1996.
This year marks 26yrs that the charity has been in operation, it continues to support young people and settings within Bassetlaw. Some of the work we have done has enhanced the day-to-day operations of the charity. This has been crucial in responding to the needs of young people and the community, both during and post pandemic.
The charity supports young people between the ages of 8 and 25 years assisting them to engage in purposeful activities, this may be as an individual or as a group. The charity encourages positive engagement as this not only raises self-esteem and confidence but it also develops transferrable skills that will be beneficial in everyday life and work. The charity’s work helps young people to realise their worth and value within the community, this in turn builds respect. Young people engaging in positive activities are less likely to become engaged in anti-social behaviour.
Monitoring and evaluation of the charity’s work has shown that we do make a difference amongst young people in Bassetlaw. This report shows the work that the charity has undertaken in the last 12 months.
Between April 2022 and March 2023, the charity supported 6 organisations and 7 individuals totalling 366 young people benefitting from the funding.
Events resumed as normal this year with an increase of young people volunteering. Our aim is to build on the success of this work, continually improving our resources to meet the needs of all young people across Bassetlaw. We strive to increase our visibility reaching out to new partners whilst strengthening ongoing partnerships. We know this will continue to develop as we further engage with young people through our networks.
We will continue to listen to what young people want and need, be aware of the challenges they face and act upon it where appropriate with the support of our partners.
Thank you for taking the time to read this report.

Financial Assistance
The charity needs approximately £34,000 per year to run and cover its core costs. Included in this is one, part time Development Manager and one, part time Admin/Events Coordinator, totalling 30hrs per week.
The charity has been successful in securing funding from Nottinghamshire County Council ‘Local Community Funding’. However, this does not cover all core costs, we are therefore keen to attract additional funding. If you can support or know of an organisation or individual that may be able to assist, please contact:
Noelle Barron the Development Manager. support@foypib.org.uk
Individual donations, Nottinghamshire County Council, local Councillors, Worksop and Dukeries Rotary Clubs, Nottinghamshire and Bassetlaw Freemasons and three Charitable Trusts, have supported the charity over the last 12 months. Local supermarkets have supported by way of discounts and donations of resources for raffle prizes. A list of supporters can be found in this report.
The charity needs funds to cover core costs to facilitate events, to enable it to raise funds for the Grant Giving Trust. This funding is key for the charity to continue to assist the hundreds of young people it supports each year.
Fundraising
The charity hosts events annually to raise funds. In addition to this, we strive to attract funding from community members who may offer donations, in addition we apply to Charitable Trusts to support with event costs. We rely on volunteers to support fundraising events, many volunteers and supporters offer ‘gifts in kind’, their time and skills are an asset to the charity.
All events help to build community capacity and engagement. Each event is marketed at every opportunity including through the website www.foypib.org.uk and Facebook page www.facebook.com/foypib/
The charity supports young people through the Grant Giving Trust; this may be as an individual applying for funding or an organisation that engages with young people. Applications are received via the website www.foypib.org.uk organisations supported during 2022-2023 are included in this report. Throughout the last 12 months we have found that activities have mostly resumed and young people are now returning to them.
The Development Manager offers help to individuals and organisations needing support to complete a funding application. Visits to organisations have been productive, this has meant we have been able to reach out to young people and inform them of the work we do and how we can support them as an individual or as a group/organisation. Trustee Board Meetings are now in person with the option to join electronically if necessary.
Events facilitated during 2022/2023
Welbeck 10K Fun Run/Walk
This event is much loved by everyone. It was great to see people out and about and taking part in the amazing grounds of Welbeck. The atmosphere was very uplifting and the event raised the huge amount of £2600. Worksop Rotary Club and The Dukeries of Worksop Rotary Club supported financially. Volunteers and staff from Valley Young People’s Centre supported the event with young people distributing medals and replenishing water supplies. Quiz Night
During November 2022 the charity facilitated a Quiz evening at Retford Oaks Academy. This was very well received, raising £1600. It was a great evening with 30 teams taking part. Everyone enjoyed the brilliant atmosphere created on the night. Feedback was also extremely positive. Two young people from The Mini Operatic Bunch (MOB) presented the questions to quizzers, they did an excellent job even though they are well established performers it is very different to being on stage!
BPL staff managed the bar and brought a staff team along.
The donation of Stichelton cheese from the Welbeck Farm Shop was delicious and very much appreciated by all.
The winning team (named Three Wise Men & their Carer!)
Comments included:
‘So lovely to see regular quizzers again!’
‘Great evening for a great cause’
‘Brilliant evening and very well organised’
Young Carers Christmas Event
During December we held a Young Carers Event at Kilton Forest Golf Club. This was a partnership event with BPL, Tü Vida and Home Instead. Twelve young people took part in the event. They enjoyed Christmas crafts, card making and present wrapping. They also decorated a festive t-shirt and enjoyed food and party games. Everyone had a great time socialising, having time for themselves and meeting up with other young people in similar circumstances.
Giant Hogweed Event
This event was held at Retford Town Hall. The band played for free and the Town Hall was also free of charge from the Mayors allocation. 150 people attended the evening, there was fabulous popular music played by the band and everyone had the opportunity to dance. The event raised over £2100 and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Comments included:
‘So nice to get together with people and have fun’
‘Fabulous venue’
‘The Giant Hogweed played great music to dance to’
‘So nice to meet friends and have a good time’
Focus on You
Focus on You is another event we facilitate annually. The show is refreshing and diverse and celebrates young people’s skills, talents and creativity. The show displays a true reflection of the young people within the Bassetlaw community. Three college groups, three school groups, two youth clubs, three soloists, an LGBT+ support group and a church choir took part. Over 300 people were in the audience it was a fabulous show and raised over £1400 to support the charity’s work.
The audience were absolutely in awe by what they saw, the atmosphere was superb and all the participants were thoroughly engaged, enjoying every minute of their time performing. This is such a great event as it is both inspiring and aspirational.
Feedback from young people taking part
“It’s a good thing to do for your CV and it goes towards our course”
“The charity is a really good cause, even raising a small amount of money can make a big difference”
“For anyone doing it next year I’d tell them to just follow their dreams”
“It’s good doing it as a big group because it’s not as scary, you can rely on other people and it means I’m not as nervous”
“I feel really welcome here, you can just be yourself and it’s a good place to express yourself”
“I think this experience has really empowered the group, doing something themselves has made them feel much more confident, it really feels like it’s their choir”
In addition to the events the charity has facilitated this year, it has supported partner organisations through their fundraising activities. These included attending the Green Flag Award at Worksop & Retford Parks, Healthy Sunday in Retford, the Canch play day and the Lord Lieutenants Garden party. Staff and the chair of the charity attended the dog races at Owlerton Stadium organised by Bassetlaw Freemasons where a donation was given to the charity from proceeds of the raffle. A Brass Band Night
organised by Retford Business Forum, was hugely successful, from this event, some funds were donated to the charity. The Rotary club of Retford held a Santa dash that staff took part in, again FoYPiB were one of the chosen charities that the club donated to.
Over the last 12 months the Mayor of Retfords focus has been young people. Raising awareness of their health, wellbeing, challenges they face whilst celebrating opportunities they may have and their success within the area. The Mayor, has taken every opportunity to promote the charity to a wide range of audiences.
Partnership is key to all the work the charity undertakes and it is thankful that organisations within the community recognise the importance and impact of our work and are happy to support us with time and funding.
The Canch Fun Day
Two members of our team supported at this event. It was a great day with a variety of organisations taking part. The day was to raise awareness of services and groups within the community that can support children and families. Information about the charity was given out during the course of the afternoon. Children were engaged in a variety of activities including hook a duck!
Lord Lieutenant's Garden Party
Members of the charity were invited to attend the Lord Lieutenant's Garden Party at Nottingham in recognition of its work. This was a fabulous afternoon where we met many other organisations that worked with and supported people throughout Nottinghamshire. It gave us opportunity to share information about the work the charity undertakes.
Photography competition
During the summer, the charity worked with The Arts Society Dukeries to facilitate a photography competition. The theme was ‘What I like about my community’
We had a number of entrants, each winner from 3 categories won a £50.00 gift voucher provided by the society. All the photographs were displayed in Bassetlaw Museum for the general public to view.

William Barker
During 2022 the charity awarded funding to William as he was about to represent England in the Dance World Cup, held in San Sebastian, Spain. William is only 1 or 4 boys in the UK in the under 10yrs category to qualify. This is a huge achievement; he went on to win a Gold Medal! He is continuing to go from strength to strength. He has since been cast at the National Theatre in London, to perform in ‘Standing at the Sky’s Edge.’ William also performed at the Retford ‘Healthy Sunday’ in August, he delighted the audience with his dance and performing skills.

A word from the Chair
It gives me great pleasure to present the annual report for 2022-23.
I must first give my heartfelt thanks to Noelle and Ali who whilst experiencing some significant personal health challenges this year, have continued to work very hard to raise a record amount of money through fundraising events and to operate the management of the charity with such flare and commitment. Thank you to the Board of Trustees for all your continued hard work too, stepping up when asked to support events and showing sound judgement throughout the year. We have made a magnificent amount of money together and its down to hard work and commitment of everyone.
The wonderful diverse range of events, offers the opportunities for individuals to attend and give generously to raise money for this excellent charity. Huge thanks to everyone who participated in any or all of the activities so that we can then provide children and young people with a step up to achieve their chosen goals and aspirations. The charity is committed to working in partnership and understanding the needs of young people. We are acutely aware of the impact of mental ill health and the effect it has on young people, along with feelings of isolation they may experience. The charity is committed to continue the support to those on the margins, those in care, care leavers and young carers through core grant giving.
I want to thank the work of the team for applying and successfully receiving grants as well as continuing to plan and deliver the much loved events such as the Welbeck Fun Run, Golf Days and the Quiz Night all of which are really well supported and raised a lot of money. The live music event at Retford town hall was also a great success once again. Focus on You was spectacular giving young people the opportunity to celebrate live dance, music and the arts performing on stage at North Nott Arena. I am so proud and privileged to chair such a fantastic charity.
To all our Trustees and over 50 Volunteers, 15 of which were young people who have given their time to support us, I would like to offer my sincere thanks. To all funders and venues that have supported us together with our President Alison Swan-Parente, Vice Presidents and Patrons, many thanks for your continued support to Focus on Young People in Bassetlaw. We look forward to raising funds, finding more opportunities for grant giving, and continuing to offer children and young people the opportunities they desire to grow and achieve in 2023-24.
Very Best wishes to you all
