Annual Report April 2021 - March 2022

Focus on Young People in Bassetlaw is a registered charity established in 1996.

This year marks 26yrs that the charity has been in operation it continues to support young people and settings within Bassetlaw. Some of the work we have done has enhanced the day to day operations of the charity. This has been crucial in responding to the needs of young people and the community, both during and post pandemic.

The charity supports young people between the ages of 8 and 25 years assisting them to engage in purposeful activities, this may be as an individual or as a group. The charity encourages positive engagement as this not only raises selfesteem and confidence but it also develops transferrable skills that will be beneficial in everyday life and work. The charity’s work helps young people to realise their worth and value within the community, this in turn builds respect. Young people engaging in positive activities are less likely to become engaged in anti-social behaviour.

Monitoring and evaluation of the charity’s work has shown that we do make a difference amongst young people in Bassetlaw. This report shows the work that the charity has undertaken in the last 12 months. The past year has found us continuing to work differently, to this end we have responded to the need of Bassetlaw young people through the LIS Covid-19 funding made available from Nottinghamshire County Council. The charity has distributed wellbeing packs to children, young people and families in need. They have also taken advantage of the Government Furlough scheme. This ended in October 2021, with working hours resuming as normal.

Between April 2021 and March 2022, the charity supported 2 organisations and 3 individuals totalling 37 young people benefitting from the funding.

A number of events have been cancelled due to the pandemic; however, we have engaged with young people who have volunteered, helping to organise wellbeing packs ready for distribution.

Our aim is to build on the success of this work, continually improving our resources to meet the needs of all young people across Bassetlaw. We strive to increase our visibility reaching out to new partners whilst strengthening ongoing partnerships. We know this will continue to develop as we further engage with young people through our networks.

We will continue to listen to what young people want and need, be aware of the challenges they face and act upon it where appropriate with the support of our partners.

Thank you for taking the time to read this report.

Admin and Events Coordinator – Ali Gordon (8hrs per week). Self Employed.

Financial Assistance

The charity needs approximately £28,000 per year to run and cover its core costs. Included in this is one, part time Development Manager and one, part time Admin/Events Coordinator, totalling 30hrs per week.

The charity has been successful in securing funding from Nottinghamshire County Council ‘Local Community Funding’. However, this does not cover all core costs, we are therefore keen to attract additional funding. If you can support or know of an organisation or individual that may be able to assist, please contact:

Noelle Barron the Development Manager. support@foypib.org.uk

Individual donations, Nottinghamshire County Council Emergency Covid - 19 Fund, local Councillors, Worksop and Dukeries Rotary Clubs and two Charitable Trusts, have supported the charity over the last 12 months. Local supermarkets have supported by way of discounts and donations of resources. A list of supporters can be found in this report.

The charity needs funds to cover core costs to facilitate events, to enable it to raise funds for the Grant Giving Trust. This funding is key for the charity to continue to assist the hundreds of young people it supports each year.

Fundraising

The charity hosts events annually to raise funds. In addition to this, we strive to attract funding from community members who may offer donations, in addition we apply to Charitable Trusts to support with event costs. We rely on volunteers to support fundraising events, many volunteers and supporters offer ‘gifts in kind’, their time and skills are an asset to the charity.

All events help to build community capacity and engagement. Each event is marketed at every opportunity including through the website www.foypib.org.uk and Facebook page www.facebook.com/foypib/

The charity supports young people through the Grant Giving Trust; this may be as an individual applying for funding or an organisation that engages with young people. Applications are received via the website www.foypib.org.uk organisations supported during 2021-2022 are included in this report. Throughout the last 12 months we have not supported a large number of groups as activities have been cancelled due to the pandemic.

The Development Manager offers help to individuals and organisations needing support to complete a funding application. Visits to organisations has ceased during this period due to health and safety reasons. We hope to resume events, visits and networking in person, when it becomes possible. Trustee Board Meetings have been online but will now resume to in person meetings where workable.

Events facilitated during 2021/2022

Focus Fest

Focus Fest was organised with the support of Inspire Youth Arts. We held this so that we could continue to give young people a platform to perform despite still being restricted by Covid 19 rules. Young people submitted their piece which was streamed via a secure online platform. The event was very successful. There were a wide range of artists including singers, musicians, poets, circus acts and media make-up students.

The event was supported by a Youth Production Team. A group of five young people attended online meetings and helped plan and shape the event. This was a fantastic opportunity for them to be involved in. They gained skills in design, technology and planning an event.

Youth Production Team

One young man was not only part of the production team for the Focus Fest event he also performed! In addition, he designed the poster and a logo for the Focus on You Event. For his efforts the charity nominated him for a Young Achiever’s Award at Retford Town Hall.

Sue Shaw (FoYPiB Chair) with a young volunteer receiving an Achiever’s Award.

Kilton Forest Golf Competition

Kilton Forest Golf competition took place on 4[th] September. Ten teams of four took part in the competition. It was a great day, thoroughly enjoyed by the golfers. The event raised over £1700 to support the charity’s work. Staff at BPL supported enormously to make the day a huge success. Sandwiches were donated for the halfway house by Samworth Brothers Worksop.

The atmosphere was very uplifting and the event raised the huge amount of £2,800. The Dukeries of Worksop Rotary Club and Worksop Rotary Club supported financially. Volunteers and staff from Valley Young People’s Centre supported the event with young people distributing medals and replenishing water supplies. The Rotary Clubs manned water stations and helped with registration and car parking.

Giant Hogweed Event

This event was held at Retford Town Hall. The band played for free and the Town Hall was also free of charge from the Chairman’s allocation. There were 150 people that attend the evening of great music and dancing. Being able to hold and attend an event like this was so heartening as for some it was their first outing since lockdown. Young Carers Christmas Event

During December we held a Young Carers Event at Kilton Forest Golf Club. This was a partnership event with BPL, Tü Vida and Home Instead. Over 20 young people took part in the event. They enjoyed Christmas crafts, card making and present wrapping and a photo booth, along with food and party games. Everyone had a great time socialising, having time for themselves and meeting up with other young people in similar circumstances.

Focus on You

This is a new event replacing Sewhat from previous years. The young people performing had such a variety of talents and skills to share that we felt this was a time for change. This event went down a storm with a diverse and very talented set of young people taking part. Taking part were 5 groups from North Notts College, 2 from Retford Oaks Academy, 1 group from Centre place, 5 YP from St Anne’s Youth Choir, and 3 YP from Valley Young People’s Centre. A total of 70 young people took part. 2 young people from the Little Drama Group presented the show. 2 young people volunteered on the night one took photographs and one interviewed the performers. One of the young person from the Youth Council designed the logo for the show. Guest performers from

Nottingham, ALT-BLK-ERA performed their original music. The 2 sisters gave a superb performance we are sure this duo will go far!

The audience were blown away by what they saw, the atmosphere was superb and all the participants were thoroughly engaged enjoying every minute of their time performing. This is such a great event as it is both inspiring and aspirational.

Work during the pandemic

During the pandemic FoYPiB has worked tirelessly to support young people and families across Bassetlaw. They could not have done this without financial support from Nottinghamshire County Council Emergency Covid 19 funding, Individual Councillors, Local Supermarkets, local Rotary clubs and Individual Donations.

Over 1,300 wellbeing packs and 50 family packs were distributed across Bassetlaw. The packs included, personal and domestic hygiene products, mindful activities, baking resources, books and sweet treats.

Partnership work was key to the success of this project. New connections were made and existing partners pulled together strengthening relationships. Some of the most vulnerable young people and families were identified.

FoYPiB worked with;

Bassetlaw schools and Academies (Primary & Secondary)

Bassetlaw Youth Centres

Branching Out

Family Service/complex needs

Leaving Care/Looked After Children

New Roots

Social Care

Women’s Refuge

YMCA

Young Carers

This work has been extremely rewarding in such difficult times. All the feedback we have had has been very positive. The project kept FoYPiB on the ‘map’ showing just how versatile the charity can be responding to need within the local community. We continued distributing packs until December 2022.

Feedback from applicants

From a Social Worker

When I commenced work with the family in July 2021 *** was very low in mood and refusing to access school or anything out in the community. Having lost her Father in a tragic accident *** was suffering from anxiety, poor body image and was overwhelmed with school work. *** had shut down to everything and everyone.

In discussions, *** had shared that she wanted to feel fit and healthy we discussed accessing the gym on quieter times of day. FoYPiB supported this YP with a gym membership for 6 months.

‘Myself and Mum feel that being given this opportunity by FoYPiB has been a massive boost to getting her back into normal life again. Thank you so much for the support. This has completely changed this family’s life, *** is now engaging in education again and is much happier. A very positive outcome for all services involved too’.

A Young Person

A young man was supported to help buy new tyres for his Kart as they need replacing regularly. He races at competition level and is part of Team Valley Karting, competing in the British Schools Indoor Karting Championships 2022.

A WORD FROM CHAIR – Sue Shaw

It gives me great pleasure to present the annual report for 2021-22 in person this year. Thank you to Noelle, Ali and the board for all their continued hard work and commitment to the charity.

This report highlights the wonderful live events we have been able to participate in post COVID – 19 and recognizes the variety of opportunities to fund raise for this excellent charity. Huge thanks to everyone who has participated, spent their hard earned money to support us, so that we can give children and young people a step up to achieve their goals.

As we emerge from the pandemic we are aware of the impact of mental health and isolation for young people and we are committed to continue the work to support those on the margins as well as the core grant giving.

We welcome Joel Johnson who joined FoYPiB as Treasurer for 2021/22, and to Lisa Brunt who is also a new trustee. The charity would like to formally thank Steve Walker for the many years of dedicated commitment to the charity, Steve has decided to step down from the board. We would also like to congratulate Linda Jackson on becoming Vice President.

I want to thank the work of the team for applying and successfully receiving grants as well as continuing to plan and deliver the much loved events such as the Welbeck Fun Run, Golf Days and the Quiz Night all of which are really well supported and raised a lot of money. The live music event at Retford town hall was also a great success as was Focus Fest . The new event replacing Sewhat Focus on You gave young people the first opportunity in two years to attend and celebrate live dance, music and the arts performing on stage at North Nott Arena. The event was a great success, for some individuals it was the first opportunity to challenge themselves to perform live post Covid. This event was a massive achievement for everyone who participated.

To all our Trustees and over 40 Volunteers, 5 of which were young people who have given their time to support us, I would like to offer my sincere thanks. To all funders and venues that have supported us together with our President Alison Swan-Parente, Vice Presidents and Patrons many thanks for your continued support to Focus on young people in Bassetlaw. We look forward to raising funds, finding more opportunities for grant giving, and continuing to offer children and young people the opportunities they desire to grow and achieve in 2022-23.

Very Best wishes to you all

Sue Shaw
