Annual Report April 2020 - March 2021
Focus on Young People in Bassetlaw is a registered charity established in 1996.
This year we celebrate 25yrs in operation all be it very low key down to the pandemic!
The charity supports young people between the ages of 8 and 25 years assisting them to engage in purposeful activities, this may be as an individual or as a group. The charity encourages positive engagement as this not only raises selfesteem and confidence but it also develops transferrable skills that will be beneficial in everyday life and work. The charity’s work helps young people to realise their worth and value within the community, this in turn builds respect. Young people engaging in positive activities are less likely to become engaged in anti-social behaviour.
Monitoring and evaluation of the charity’s work has shown that we do make a difference amongst young people in Bassetlaw. This report shows the work that the charity has undertaken in the last 12 months. The past year has found us working very differently, to this end we have responded to the need of Bassetlaw young people through the LIS Covid-19 funding made available from Nottinghamshire County Council. The charity has distributed over 1,200 wellbeing packs to children, young people and families in need.
Between April 2020 and March 2021, the charity supported 2 Youth Centres and Branching Out Retford totalling 168 young people benefitting from the funding.
A number of events have been cancelled due to the pandemic; however, we have engaged with young people who have volunteered to pack wellbeing packs ready for distribution.
Our aim is to build on the success of this work, continually improving our resources to meet the needs of all young people across Bassetlaw. During this period, we have become more visible as we have reached out to new partners whilst strengthening previous partnerships. We know this will continue to develop as we further engage with young people through our networks.
We will continue to listen to what young people want and need, be aware of the challenges they face and act upon it where appropriate with the support of our partners.
Thank you for taking the time to read this report.

Financial Assistance
The charity needs approximately £36,000 per year to run and cover its core costs. Included in this is one, part time Development Manager and one, part time Admin/Events Coordinator, with a total of 30hrs per week.
The charity has been successful in securing funding from Nottinghamshire County Council ‘Local Improvement Scheme’. However, this does not cover all core costs, we are therefore keen to attract additional funding. If you can support or know of an organisation or individual that may be able to assist, please contact:
Noelle Barron the Development Manager. support@foypib.org.uk
Individual donations, Nottinghamshire County Council Emergency Covid - 19 Fund, local Councillors, Worksop and Retford Rotary Clubs and a Charitable Trust, have supported the charity over the last 12 months. Local supermarkets have supported by way of discounts and donations of resources. A list of supporters can be found in this report.
The charity needs funds to cover core costs to facilitate events, to enable it to raise funds for the Grant Giving Trust. This funding is key for the charity to continue to assist the hundreds of young people it supports each year.
Fundraising
The charity hosts events annually to raise funds. In addition to this, we strive to attract funding from community members who may offer donations in addition we apply to Charitable Trusts to support with event costs. We rely on volunteers to support fundraising events, many volunteers and supporters offer ‘gifts in kind’, their time and skills are an asset to the charity.
All events help to build community capacity and engagement. Each event is marketed at every opportunity including through the website www.foypib.org.uk and Facebook page www.facebook.com/foypib/
The charity supports young people through the Grant Giving Trust; this may be as an individual applying for funding or an organisation that
engages with young people. Applications are received via the website www.foypib.org.uk organisations supported during 2020-2021 are included in this report. Throughout the last 12 months we have not supported a large number of groups as activities have been cancelled due to the pandemic.
The Development Manager offers help to individuals and organisations needing support to complete a funding application. Visits to organisations has ceased during this period due to health and safety reasons. We hope to resume events, visits and networking in person as soon as it is safe to do so, the charity will be led by Government Guidelines. Until then, it will continue to hold and attend meetings online.
Events facilitated during 2020/2021
Due to the pandemic our usual events were cancelled.
These included;
Sewhat, Welbeck Fun Run/Walk, Golf Competitions and Music/Dance evenings.
Quiz Night
During November 2020 the charity facilitated an online Quiz evening. This was very well received raising almost £1,000.
Over 20 teams took part it was a very good evening with people joining using Zoom. The event was very uplifting and the feedback was extremely positive.
Comments included:
‘How lovely to see lots of people at once even though it was through a screen!’
‘Great Quiz Night as always by FOYPIB!’
‘Great to see regular quizzers again!’
Treasure Hunt
In December 2020 we set out on our travels and mapped out a Treasure Hunt. This covered Worksop and Retford and included some features of the towns such as The Priory Church, Retford Town Centre, and the Idle Valley. We raised £250 everyone who took part enjoyed the hunt despite torrential rain!
Work during the pandemic
During the pandemic FoYPiB has worked tirelessly to support young people and families across Bassetlaw. They could not have done this without financial support from Nottinghamshire County Council Emergency Covid 19 funding, Individual Councillors, Local Supermarkets, local Rotary clubs and Individual Donations.
Over 1,200 wellbeing packs and 50 family packs were distributed across Bassetlaw. The packs included, personal and domestic hygiene products, mindful activities, baking resources, books and sweet treats.
Partnership work was key to the success of this project. New connections were made and existing partners pulled together strengthening relationships. Some of the most vulnerable young people and families were identified.
FoYPiB worked with;
Bassetlaw schools and Academies (Primary & Secondary)
Bassetlaw Youth Centres
Branching Out
Family Service/complex needs
Leaving Care
Looked After Children
New Roots
Social Care
Women’s Refuge
YMCA
Young Carers
This work has been extremely rewarding in such difficult times. All the feedback we have had has been very positive. The project kept FoYPiB on the ‘map’ showing just how versatile the charity can be responding to need within the local community.
Feedback from recipients of Wellbeing packs:
A Youth Centre
“Some of the young women I have been working with have been struggling with their mental health and seeing them smile has been brilliant.”
“I liked it a lot! I was super excited to get the pack! It was really helpful and I know your support helped a lot of families who couldn't get their hands on some of the things they need. Thank you so much!”
“It was a lovely surprise when I got the pack, it really cheered me up.”
Young Carers
The kids absolutely loved their packs! The eldest said “Wow look at this amazing shampoo and conditioner, I’m going to have to wash my hair right now!” Thank you so much, they really do deserve a treat.
“The kids absolutely loved their packs! The eldest said “Wow look at this amazing shampoo and conditioner, I’m going to have to wash my hair right now!” Thank you so much, they really do deserve a treat.
A local Academy
“I just wanted to let you know that we had just one gift bag left yesterday and we gave it to a young person who had to go into emergency social care support. The look on the face of the young person was overwhelming when we gave them the bag, having a few little goodies to take with them made so much difference.”
Family Services
“The packs have been really well received with children telling me they have been baking and playing the games. They have been really helpful getting engagement from families we have struggled to contact by phone as they were allocated after lock down so colleagues hadn’t met them face to face. Obviously when you turn up unannounced it’s great to be able to say, I thought I’d pop out and bring some fun things for you. Interestingly of my families the ones that I have taken activities out to have remained engaged.”
The packs helped social workers to engage with previously not engaged families as it broke down barriers.
The mindful activities, footballs and family games gave young people and families time out to play together.
The hygiene products for personal and domestic use were crucial in helping people keep clean and stay safe.
Throughout this period staff have worked from home. The charity took advantage of the government furlough scheme. Since September 2020 the Development Manager, Noelle Barron has part worked and part furloughed. This scheme has been vital in supporting the charity to continue its work. Administrator Ali Gordon has continued to work her usual 8 hours per week. Volunteers from the youth centres have supported to help pack resources this has included 5 young people from Valley Young People’s Centre.

A WORD FROM THE CHAIR – Sue Shaw
As chair of the charity, I first want to say an enormous thank you to Noelle, Ali and the board for all their hard work and commitment to the charity whist we have been unable to meet in person.
You will see from the detailed report prepared by the team that it makes excellent reading. It highlights the challenges presented to the charity and how everyone has stepped up and achieved so much for children and young people in our area.
We said our fond goodbyes to Catherine Burn CEO of BCVS, Catherine was a great advocate for our charity and we look forward to continuing our excellent working relationship with BCVS under new stewardship in due course.
We look forward to welcoming Joel who will join FoYPiB as Treasurer for 2021/22.
I want to thank the work of the team for applying and being successful in receiving grants. The dedication of the team to diversify the work FoYPiB does is to be applauded. They have worked in partnership with organisations who have the knowledge of the devastating impact of COVID 19 on so many young lives. You will read just how many packs have been distributed over the year, and this has been done whist Noelle has been furloughed/part furloughed for much of the time.
There are many positives to this lockdown, Focus on Young People in Bassetlaw have a high profile across the district and we are looking to work with the network of agencies to continue going forward.
The team have come up with a number of excellent fundraising opportunity’s which include on line quizzes and a treasure hunt. We look ahead optimistically and have a number of live events penciled in. We will have to continue to wait and see how we can all emerge from the lockdown and get back to the business working alongside children and young people.
I would like to finish by thanking all our Trustees and Volunteers who give their time to support us, to all funders that have supported us during the past twelve months together with our President Alison Swan Parente, Vice Presidents and Patrons.
Very Best wishes to you all
Sue Shaw
