## **Annual General Meeting Summary for Year End 2021**

A big thank you to all the volunteers who consistently give of their time and resources to ensure that both the Church and all its varied activities run smoothly and successfully. Without you, none of what we seek to do for God would be possible. More importantly, thank you to those who live out their daily relationship with the Lord Jesus at home, at work and wherever you find yourself in the week.

Despite the lockdown restrictions, we continued to be a family orientated church with respect for all ages and backgrounds, acknowledging that no one is perfect, we are all on differing stages of the journey of faith and all learn in different ways.

This has been another year of stop-start services; with in-person meetings soon abandoned early in the New Year to online Zoom meetings due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

Pastor Les and the leadership team kept in contact with congregation members either via phone, FaceTime calls or simply meeting on doorsteps. Weekly and sometimes daily devotionals were sent to congregation members and placed on the Church Facebook page. Thank you to all those who contributed to these devotionals and made an effort to contact members of the congregation and community.

RightNow Media, an online resource of Christian reading and study materials with 1,000s of videos covering 100s of topics from studies in a particular book of the Bible or a character study or subjects such as apologetics etc. was paid for by the church and continues to pay for this resource so that all members are allowed free access. The resource has been used in group studies by some home groups.

Our Treasure Kids program to young children aged Reception to year 6 moved online in the early part of 2021 due to another national lockdown. When allowed to do so these reopened in person.

When in person services resumed in April, we continued to work hard with the Community Centre Committee at Edenthorpe and other venues to ensure a Covidsafe environment. Social distancing and other measures were employed to keep everyone safe and within government guidelines.

Pastors Les and Daniel continued to keep in touch with the local schools, offering their assistance in any way that would benefit the school. Les remains a Governor of Edenthorpe Hall, a local Primary School. In person assemblies restarted in October.

The food bank continued to operate, taking referrals from the local community and local charities, including local schools. Given the amount of food banks that sprang up during the pandemic the call on the church food bank was limited. The food bank continues to operate on a cash basis and remains open as we feel that as we move out of the pandemic and other food bank funding is reduced, we will see an increased demand on ours.

In September we had the opportunity to start a Coffee Club in Edenthorpe, utilising the Communal Hall on Church Balk Gardens. Andrea Robinson a local Councilor highlighted a need amongst the elderly in the area who had suffered disproportionately during the pandemic in terms of isolation, losing valuable community services that no longer existed and many losing a loved partner from Covid. Under the leadership of Sue Wallace, the launch of the Coffee Club has been

nothing short of a huge success. We are often full and new people arrive every week. Many friendships are being established amongst the group and with the volunteers from Life Church. Some attendees have told us that Coffee Club has literally ‘saved their lives’. Numerous stories are emerging of new friendships and people getting their life back. It is wonderful to see a number beginning to attend church services. We continue to seek the Lord as we seek to minister to the elderly population in our community and many ideas are being explored for 2022. We are grateful for the Support of St Ledger Homes (whose building we use for Coffee Club) and DMBC through the community support officers. A number of small grants has helped establish the club and buy much needed equipment.

Pastor Les serves as the Chair of Renew Doncaster Limited, a local charity which provides assisted accommodation to families who are homeless or at risk thereof.

I am very grateful to Daniel Budhi and Alison Heaton and their teams for all they have done this year in continuing to serve the youth and children of Life Church and the local community and in how they have kept in touch with the youth and children and their families in various ways. (See their separate reports for more details).

We are grateful that at the end of November we were able to hold our “Preparing for Christmas” event after an absence of 2 years. We held a scaled back family Carol Service in December on the last Sunday morning before Christmas.

Turning to the finances. The income during the year income fell to £35,216.04 (£38,024.37) a fall, of just over £2,800. However, all this loss can be accounted for by a significant dip during the year of our Gift Aid and GADDS (small donations scheme) claims. This was due to a change in the way HMRC wanted our agents (Assemblies of God)) to process Gifts Aid claims on our behalf. This meant the church had to register with HMRC for our own gift aid number and then to reregister AoG as our agents. This took longer than expected and no Gift Aid claims were made from March 2021 onwards. The saving grace was the fact that we had sufficient cash resources to meet all our obligations and we knew that despite the delay in reclaiming the gift aid this would be forthcoming. The claim was successfully made in 2022 and will be reflected in those years accounts. Overall giving from donations made in a Sunday offering and giving directly into the bank account was up from £27,049 to £29,318 an increase of just over £2,000. Thank you to all those who give faithfully to the church. Again, without your giving and sacrifice we would not be able to function as a church. Expenditure increased to £38,952 (£34,832). Increase was seen in pastoral services as this reduced in 2020, room hire also increased given that we met more in person this year and services to youth and the purchase of the new televisions to help with our Sunday services. This resulted in a loss for the year £3,735.80. We have met, and continue to meet, all our obligations as a church. The trustees continue to monitor the church finances carefully. The contribution you make is vital. Those of you who are taxpayers and have not yet signed a Gift Aid form please see me.

The gift day raised £2,880 (£3,390) which was designated to be used for any new equipment we may require and any new outreach events we put on to engage those in our community that normally do not come to church. A huge thank you to those

who contributed towards the Gift Day. Given the size of the church here in Edenthorpe, this is a significant amount and shows your very generous spirit! If we play our part, God has promised to do His! (Malachi 3:10).

This has been another year of great disruption and one that continues to show how fragile life can be and how our plans need to be flexible. The pandemic has afforded us the opportunity to reflect on what is and is not important in life and also shown us that community and personal relationships are the basic foundations of making life work. More importantly, a strong relationship with the Lord Jesus is vital at all times.

Our plans continue to be flexible as we serve the church members and the local community. As we stand on the edge of a New Year we are still unsure as to how life will pan out for us all, in the months and years that lie ahead. We will continue to be a family church holding out the truth of the Gospel offering a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. This is our mission and has not changed.

Here are the areas in which we still require breakthrough:

Breakthrough in prayer: Prayer needs to be at the center of all we do. I believe greater levels of prayer are demanded if we are to see all that God wants to accomplish in and through us.

Breakthrough in Evangelism. Ask God to remove the blinds off the unbelieving and empower us and give us the courage to share our story.

Breakthrough in miracles. Jesus and the early church’s ministry was marked by miracles. As is so often quoted that Jesus is our example on how to live – then miracles must accompany us. The early church saw many breakthroughs in many communities with a miracle.

Breakthrough in discipleship. Pray that those who have come to Christ develop a deeper connection with Him.

Breakthrough in church community. Pray that God would help us to live authentic lives with each other and give us deep friendships.

Breakthrough in Mission. Pray for our local schools, local groups, counsellors, local Government. Pray that God will open new doors of opportunity and give us workers. Prayer for those who have begun to attend our Coffee Club.

Breakthrough in families.

Breakthrough in generosity.

Breakthrough in Worship. I pray you will love God deeper, walk more humbly and serve more passionately.

I do believe, along with Paul’s challenge to the Galatians, that we will reap a harvest if we do not give up! Please partner with us in this harvest field. We need prayer and more workers to expand and grow. These are not the days to hold back, but rather to press in and press forward and take hold of that for which Christ took hold of us.

## **' Annual Report 2021 - Children s Department**

Ministry to children continued to be a priority of Life Church Doncaster during 2021, despite the ongoing challenges of the global coronavirus pandemic. The year began with one in-person session of our Sunday morning children’s groups, G.I.G. and Tiddlywinks, before another lockdown was announced. As a result, we began after-school Zoom meetings on Thursdays for children from G.I.G. and Treasure Kids. These had a limited take up, but were a good way of staying in touch with some children from all of our clubs.

After the Easter school holiday in April, we were able to re-open our meetings for children. The three evangelistic Treasure Kids clubs at Edenthorpe, Kirk Sandall and Stainforth ran with themes of “Parables”, “Interesting Insects, Brilliant Bugs”, “J. Team”, “Gideon”, “David” and “Christmas” in 2021. In G.I.G., the topics covered included “Easter”, “Some things that churches do”, “The Adventures of Paul”, “Beginnings”, “Living Jesus’ Way - the Sermon on the Mount” and “Christmas”.

## **Young Leaders**

Our Treasure Kids groups have benefitted greatly from the involvement of young leaders over the years. In 2021, three girls in year 7/8, who had previously attended Stainforth Treasure Kids themselves, continued to attend to help with activities there. A teenage boy from the Youth Group supported at Edenthorpe and three year 7 girls joined the team at Kirk Sandall in September, alongside a year 11 girl from the Youth Group who had joined us in 2019. An introductory training session and lunch was held for the new young leaders during the Summer holiday.

## **Special Events**

Indoor gatherings were still restricted at Easter, but a local councillor organised two egg hunts at local parks and invited us to staff the section that had clues about the events of the first Easter. In August, we provided Treasure Kids craft tables at Stainforth’s “Party in the Park” event for local children.

At the end of November it was a joy to welcome local people, including many Treasure Kids families, to our “Preparing for Christmas” event after an absence of 2 years due to the pandemic. We held a scaled back family Carol Service in December on the last Sunday morning before Christmas.

We are very grateful to all those who have contributed to our regular activities for children, whether on a regular or relief basis, and to those who have been part of the team at our special events too.

## **– Coffee Club Report September 2021 to December 2021.**

The first meeting to discuss a potential community coffee club was with local councillor Andrea Robinson on 6[th] September. She wanted to respond to an elderly gentleman’s concerns, living nearby, that there was nothing happening in the area where people could gather during the week. This gentleman was lonely and rarely saw anyone from day to day having recently lost his wife.

Life Church agreed to hold a coffee morning each Monday in the Communal Hall on Church Balk Gardens. We didn’t know many local elderly people at that stage. Flyers were distributed over a couple of weeks to nearby bungalows and doors knocked and many discussions showed a definite interest in this new venture.

Over the next few weeks, a steady trickle of local neighbours came for a look to see what was going on. We discovered very shortly, that we had many attendees who were grieving husbands and wives having lost partners during the pandemic. Soon the attendees began to open up and were able to tell us all about what they had been through while they were tucking into their tea and toast; a few tears were shed and bonds were forming.

Our team of workers grew, God was indeed sending workers. Everybody loved the sense of camaraderie and sharing the love of God with these people. The workers have been able to use their own skill sets and personality and it was a joy to see such dynamic team working.

As Christmas approached, we invited the regulars to come to various events that Life Church were hosting and were pleased to see a number come along and enjoy the services.

We decorated the Communal Hall for Christmas, put up a lovely tree and had a table with the nativity scene on. We sang Christmas carols which many joined in with and we had a taste of some Christian poetry which told the Christmas story. We gave everyone who came a goody bag to take home which had a large print New Testament Bible, a pen with Jesus’ name on and a fridge magnet inside. It was a chance for us to talk more about Jesus and share His love.

None of us knew all the reasons why God wanted us to start this work at this time, in this place. We only know that there was a big unmet need in the community and many lonely elderly people who suffered disproportionately during the pandemic. God responded and called us to these precious people.

We are grateful for the support of the local councillors Andrea and David, Stacey Lynn, Customer Involvement Officer for St Ledger Homes and Geoff and Sindy, Stronger Communities Officers for DMBC. All have been instrumental in resolving issues with the building, raising initial funds for the launch of the Coffee Club and sourcing small grants that assisted with publicity, initial purchase of refreshments and equipment and also to enable us to put on a Christmas party for the attendees in December. In the main the ongoing costs of the Club is sustained by voluntary

donations from those who attend and some funds from Life Church who provided the Bibles and presents for Christmas. New chairs and tables were ordered and the building was starting to look a bit more presentable!

To finish, I’d like to thank the volunteer helpers, they have served with stunning dedication, and we are all learning things which help us to grow in our giftings and to be more Christlike and reach the lost with the gospel. One couple had Pastor Les officiate at the renewing of their wedding vows service and a few of us joined the wedding party and disco afterwards!!

The Lord told us to love our neighbour as we love ourselves. (Matt 22 39-40). A pretty tall order but with Jesus’ help this has started to happen. OK we meet and greet, make drinks, make toast, listen, share, and love, but it is Him in us that is making this club what it is. Thank you Jesus.

## **Youth Group AGM report 2021**

We started 2021 in the middle of a global coronavirus pandemic. Despite the challenges, we were still running in person programs, socially distanced, where we could do so and switching to virtual meetings when lockdowns were announced. We also kept the group together with an active WhatsApp.

However, despite the challenges, we have seen new people added, new growth and we have had numerous opportunities to explore faith in the youth group.

## _**A typical night**_

Our Friday nights have a theme/event for the evening and then we have a discussion around topics of faith. Nights have included Nerf Wars; games nights; parties; minute to win it nights; world record breakers nights and many more activities.

We have had discussions around life and faith, talked about fear; Jesus; prayer; and many other topics. These usually last around 15-20 minutes. We use Youth for Christ resources, which facilitate discussions/games and activities around particular topics. The majority of the youth group members would describe themselves as non-Christian, with some sort of belief in God, but no personal relationship with Jesus. Our aim is to simply introduce them to Jesus.

It has been great to see, that even during the pandemic, most of the young people came back and more. We did however lose a few solid core group members but we have continued to grow seeing around 20 young people each week.

## _**Trips**_

Throughout 2021 we were unable to undertake many trips aways with the youth group. We like to do this every half term but due to covid and last-minute cancellations, we only got to take 1. We took the youth group to Go Bounce, where they met with 100 other young people from youth groups in Doncaster.

In 2022 we are expecting that we will be able to do more with the group in terms of trips planned such as Tree Trekking in Bawtry.

## _**Youth for Christ Interns**_

Reagan, a Youth for Christ intern from USA was with us from September and was a great help. She was based at Life Church Doncaster and together with Amy would help plan and lead sessions, building relationships with young people. This has been a major help having the extra staff.

## _**The year ahead**_

We’re looking forward in 2022 to building on what we have restarted this year. In a lot of ways we have had chance to rethink and reimagine how we do things. 2022 will see us regain the momentum we had before the pandemic so we have a solid foundation to build upon. Our main goal amongst all the fun, is for young people to discover Jesus in a real way that has real impact in their lives.
