We are a Schoolswork Charity whose AIM is to increase the knowledge and understanding of the Christian Faith and Support students in their Spiritual, Social and moral development.

Our Values

Partnering Developing good relationships and working alongside schools, churches, other organisations and the local community. Professionalism All our work will reflect good practice and be conducted in a professional manner

Boldness We aim to take calculated risks to further the work of the Trust. We will present our work from a clear Christian perspective, with full respect for all faiths and none, within schools.

Creativity We aim to deliver resources and activities in schools that engage children and young people and to use creative approaches to aid learning and retention.

Commitment We are committed on a long-term basis to each school in the borough.

“The Cattle on a thousand hills are His!” — this affirmation from Psalm 50 entered my consciousness some fifty years ago when | was greatly helped in the early years of my walk with God by members of the Navigators, a mission with its roots in the WW2 US Navy. The ‘Navs' were, and remain, strongly focussed on encouraging Jesus followers to ‘let the Word of God dwell in you richly’ (Col. 3:16), and | remain indebted to them for establishing a lifetime habit of not only reading the Word but studying, memorising and meditating up on it.

This verse about cattle may seem obscure but it is a powerful metaphor, and promise, which reminds us our God is a wealthy Father who has resources beyond our knowledge, and such is our experience. When Sarah Webb, in early 2018 was called away to a new ministry, leaving us without a Director, we trustees imagined how good it would be if only there were someone with energy, experience, maturity, gravitas and passion to lead the work, though we doubted such a person existed or could be available or affordable! We did however remind ourselves ‘the cattle on a thousand hills are His!’ and prayed accordingly. We could not have imagined anyone more perfect for this role than the person God had been preparing, tucked away, out of sight, on some hill somewhere. Simon Ellingham has proved the perfect fit, leading the team, taking sessions in secondary schools, winning funding from trusts and representing SSW to churches and leaders. From day one he has served with unflagging energy, wisdom and confidence in God — Jehovah Jireh, our Provider.

In September 2022, we were pleased to welcome back Sarah Skinner our much loved-by-schools and long-serving, Primary Schools Worker. When Sarah went on maternity leave for the school year 2021-22, by ‘coincidence’, Rachel Marlow, a gifted and experienced teacher and children’s worker living in Essex ‘happened’ to be getting married to Luke, a Londoner, and relocating into our area in Summer 2021. Rachel proved so effective in this role (and popular with schools!), she remained with us for much of 2022-23 after Sarah returned, creating a powerful ‘double-act’.

The provision and appointment in 2020 of Abby Bryon to lead our team of volunteers who daily present assemblies in Primary schools has proved a great success, and as demand from schools increases, the assemblies team continues to flourish.

Sara Kalembo who has served the trust faithfully and effectively for many years as our administrator moved on in February having been led to a new ministry in counselling prisoners. We are grateful for Sara’s service and grateful to God for his timely provision of multi-talented Petra Port who joined us in March 2023 as our new Administrator and has already proven to be a hugely valuable addition to the team.

TRUSTEES- continued

Kate Travers who joined us as Secondary Schools worker in January 2019 left us with our very best wishes, after serving brilliantly for over four years, to take up a new role as youth worker in her home church. Although advertising for her replacement has not as yet produced a suitable candidate, we see God's plan and provision in this. As an interim measure Simon volunteered to step up to a full-time roll, to include the Secondary Schools Worker role, while retaining the role as Director. This is proving strategically significant as we understand more about the approach we should be taking to serve God in the arena of Secondary education. Alongside Simon, Beca McKay has continued to support the work in secondary schools within our valued partnership with Carshalton Beeches Baptist Church.

We see God's faithful provision also in the strength of the board of trustees. Kevin Lewis (Vicar, Church of the Good Shepherd) and Nigel Butcher (Pastor, Cheam Baptist) continue to serve alongside headteacher Cheryl Hudson and Nicholas Martin our invaluable Treasurer. We thank Laraine Sztypuljak for her years of service having stood down this year, but not before introducing Shalini Christy who on joining the board has brought a material contribution, a fresh perspective, and consequent robustness to our safeguarding policies, training and practice. Again, we thank God for his provision.

As ever we are thankful to the team of volunteers who give time freely to SSW including Adesina Adesanya who faithfully looks after our payroll.

Similarly, we are grateful for the churches, trusts and individuals who support us financially, from across the spectrum of church traditions, who believe in our vision to increase the knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith, and to support students in their spiritual, social and moral development. We cannot do this on our own, we rely on God's guidance, provision and inspiration by his Spirit, and we rely on the prayers and financial backing of our partners.

Whereas in the foregoing | have reported largely on the ‘inputs’ which make this work possible, | will leave it for Simon in his report to tell us more about the ‘outputs’. Report of the Director of Charitable Activities

Yet another busy year for Sutton Schoolswork! For over 26 years those connected with us have diligently, faithfully and consistently worked to tell as many of our school communities as possible of the joy of knowing Jesus. We've done this through a multitude of streams, and | aim to simply sum up what has happened in a few facts and figures, plus some key ‘moments of joy’ that we can share with you, and hopefully you will join us in thanking God for His amazing provision of Sutton Schoolswork in the schools of Sutton.

It’s such a privilege to be a part of this wonderful work, and to know that He is fully behind, with and most definitely ahead of us. We have no idea what impact each and every contact has on an individual. Jesus talked about the sower, the seed, and the various types of surface, and we simply try to be a means by which that seed arrives. Faces within SSW come and go, but the message remains constant.

1 girl from the Kintsugi Hope group at the Limes College (Pupil Referral Unit) has now begun to attend her local church!

2 young people approached one of our staff to say they recognised her from our Positive Choices workshops at school and wanted to say that the sessions had been ‘cool’.

And we have said a few goodbyes —

Sara Kalembo, our faithful secretary, has moved on to work within pastures new. Thank you, Sara, for your service with SSW. We pray that God will continue to work within you, strengthening and enabling you to do even more amazing things.

Rachel Marlow, our joint worker in the primary schools, has found her work as an evangelist at her church, St. Peter's on the Rose Hill Estate, to have grown so fast she had to prioritise it over SSW, so sadly, we said farewell in April. We thank God that He has moved so wonderfully in this church, and pray that Rachel will be part of an ever growing part of the kingdom! And thank you, Rachel, for the fresh energy you brought to the office. God has done fantastic things through you with us, and we pray for even more in your ever expanding work.

And Sarah Skinner, the other joint primary schools worker, departs for maternity leave for her second child. She has brought the joy of knowing God into so many schools over the last few years, leading many children in their journey of learning about Jesus, and we will miss her calm efficiency around the office. Filling her shoes (if that’s possible) will be Charis Miles, who joins us for 12 months. Charis epitomises so much of what SSW aspires to — she can recall sitting in our assemblies as a primary school child listening to the stories of Jesus, and now here she is, fulfilling that role herself. Praise God, seed has flourished!!!

So, as the academic year draws to a close, we once thank God for His provision, His Spirit, and His strength. At the heart of what we do is a desire to let as many young people and children (and of course staff) as possible hear of His love and forgiveness, and to offer the opportunity to as many as we can to consider the offer He extends of eternal life through His son.

And, finally, thank you to all of those who support in so many different ways.

There are our wonderful, resilient and enthusiastic volunteers, who give up their time to tell of God’s story in their own lives; there are the faithful who pray, asking God to support, strengthen, guide, and lead us; there are the church leaders who galvanise their fellowships to keep SSW in their hearts and prayers; there are the amazing financial supporters, individuals as well as whole churches, who give from their own provision so that we may perform our role; and there are the grant-making Trusts, who also make a massive contribution to the presence of SSW in so many schools.

We exist so that others may know He exists. Please continue to pray that we may serve Him faithfully, effectively and productively, so that the kingdom of God may be known by even more here in Sutton. Bless you all Simon Ellingham

SSW priorities for next year:-

  1. Continue to deliver and develop Primary assemblies to the highest standard, engaging in more schools, and increasing the number of volunteers involved.

  2. Embed Charis in her role as Primary Schools worker (Maternity Cover), continuing to deliver our high quality workshops.

  3. Increase the number of schools that receive our Discover Christmas workshops, exceeding last year’s number of 12.

  4. Increase the number of schools that attend Easter Experience and consequently the number of pupils, exceeding last year's totals of 25 and 1900 respectively.

  5. Continue to support our provision of Christian Unions in Secondary Schools, and to develop new ventures around the borough that provide opportunities for Christian pupils to engage with and encourage each other, and for them to appropriately evangelise to their friends.

  6. Increase our prayer support around the borough, engaging with new supporters and churches, through speaking at church services, local events, newsletter and prayer updates.

  7. Maintain our presence on SACRE, delivering a voice for SSW within a pan-borough network.

  8. Increase the number of schools actively engaging with our LIVE project, currently 2.

  9. Launch our new venture of GSUS in Sutton Grammar school.

Trustees’ Report

The Trustees submit their report together with the financial statements for the year ended 31st August 2023. The report has been prepared in accordance with the provisions applicable to companies entitled to the small companies’ exemption, including the exemption from preparing a strategic report.

Structure, Governance and Management

Governing document

The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust, and constitutes a limited company, limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006.

Public Benefit

In planning the activities of the Company, the Trustees have considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit and, in particular, the specific guidance on charities for the advancement of religion.

Directors and Trustees

Directors (who are also trustees of Sutton Schools Christian Workers Trust for the purposes of charity law) are elected for a period of 3 years and are eligible to stand for re-election.

Fundraising Activities

Sutton Schools Christian Workers Trust relies on the kind donations from individuals, local churches, trust funds and schools to fund its charitable activities.

Financial Review

The financial position of the charity is set out in the Statement of Financial Activities, the Balance Sheet and related notes, which have been prepared in accordance with statutory requirements of the Charities Act 2011 and SORP (FRS102).

The financial statements have been prepared on the going concern basis as in the opinion of the Trustees there are no material uncertainties about the charity's ability to continue.

Recruitment and Appointment of New Trustees

New Trustees are elected by the existing Trustees.

Reserves Policy

The Trustees review the level of reserves at the beginning of each financial year and have determined that the appropriate level of free reserves should be sufficient to meet three months operating expenditure should the charity experience a significant drop in income, this equates to £26,804. Additional reserves are also needed to replace fixed assets at the appropriate time. At the end of the year unrestricted funds were £44,935 (2021 - £48,823).

Risk Assessment

In April 2023 the major risks facing the charity were reviewed and any necessary steps have been taken to lessen these risks.

The key risk identified was the uncertainty of income - The Trust monitors the income and with a Director of Charitable Activities, have a permanent person who is responsible for generating the necessary funds.

Activities

The main activities of the company are the advancement of the Christian faith in accordance with the Statement of Beliefs, particularly amongst children and young people in the schools, colleges and other educational establishments in the London Borough of Sutton, and the advancement of education in accordance with Christian principles.

Volunteers

The Trustees gratefully acknowledge the valued work undertaken again by volunteers during the year. Their input has significantly reduced the running costs of the company. These include:

  1. Schoo! worker volunteers

  2. Administration volunteers

3. Church representatives

With the help of the above, the supporters in finance and prayer, and those who attended the annual service and prayer meetings, the company has continued to achieve its aims this year.

Review of the Year

The Trust madea loss of £3,663 in the year (2022 surplus of £6,784) and we continue to build on the wonderful foundations laid by previous workers and increase the reach of the charity in the schools in Sutton.

The Trust has continued to enjoy the support of a large number of local Churches and individuals, through the donation of finance and prayer support. The directors are very grateful to Cheam Methodist Church for their continuing generosity in providing the Trust with office accommodation, which considerably reduces the running costs of the company.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity’s trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (‘the 2006 Act’).

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, | report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’). In carrying out my examination | have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner's statement -

| have completed my examination. | confirm no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:-

  1. Accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or

  2. The accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. The accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of the independent examination; or

Notes to the Financial Statements

a) Basis of preparing the financial statements The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) ‘Accounting and reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)’, Financial Reporting Standard 102 ‘The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland’ and the Companies Act 2006. The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under gift aid is recognised at the time of donation.

As a charitable company, Sutton Schools Christian Workers Trust is exempt from tax on income and gains falling within section 505 of the Taxes Act 1988 or section 256 of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 to the extent that these are applied to its charitable objects. No tax charges have arisen in the charitable company. The charitable company is not registered for VAT and accordingly expenditure includes VAT where appropriate.

g) Fund accounting

General funds are unrestricted funds which are available for use at the discretion of the Trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the company and which have not been designated for other purposes.

Restricted funds are to be used in accordance with specific restrictions imposed by the donors which have been raised by the company for particular purposes. The cost of raising and administering such funds are charged against the specific fund. The aim and use of each restricted fund is set out in the notes to the financial statements.

h) Financial Instruments

The Company only has financial assets and liabilities of a kind that qualify as basic financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value and subsequently measured at their settlement value.

The Company's functional and presentational currency is pounds Sterling (GBP).

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due.

9 Constitution of the Company

The company is limited by guarantee and is incorporated in England and Wales. Each member undertakes to contribute a sum not exceeding £10 in certain circumstances as set out in clause 7 of the Memorandum of Association. At 31st August 2023 the number of members was six (2022: 6).

The directors of the charitable company are the trustees under charity law and received no remuneration during the year (2022 - £Nil).

14 Related Party Transactions

During the year, the amount of donations received without conditions from trustees was £3,000 (2022: £3,000).

15 Pension Scheme

Defined Contribution Pension Scheme

Sutton Schoolswork contributes to a defined contribution pension scheme for its employees. The pension cost charge for the period represents contributions payable by Sutton Schoolswork to the respective scheme and amounted to £4,416 (2021: £5,640).

At the year end, contributions totalling £264 (2022: £739) were payable to the scheme and are included in other creditors.
