VISION SUNDAY and ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

17 MARCH, 2024

The Past Year

This Vision report will focus on a shorter time period due to moving the date of our Vision Sunday and AGM back to March in order to have a closer relationship between our end of year accounts and review of previous year and casting vision for the year ahead. Whilst sometimes we have found aspects of church governance frustrating such as trying to sort out our backdated gift aid claim from the HMRC, we have also seen growth both numerically and spiritually over this time period. Below are some of the things we have seen breakthrough with as well as a few challenges thrown in also.

Prayer and Fasting

In our previous two times of prayer and fasting as a congregation we have been given permission by other churches to use their resources and adapt them to suit our needs. When I approached my dear friend Pastor Gustaf if we could adapt one of his devotionals again for January's Prayer and Fasting season he challenged me to write one myself.

After being given this challenge I considered what books of the Bible might suit this new year we were stepping into in 2024. Having seen that the book of Joshua had

twenty four chapters I read through each chapter taking notes from it and gradually after several weeks this morphed into our very own devotional guide.

Our Prayer and Fasting this January lasted 24 days due to the year being 2024 and looked at each of the 24 chapters of the book of Joshua on each of these days. This time rather than printing off a random number of devotional books and seeing how many got taken, we asked the congregation to register their interest in taking part in the prayer and fasting and printed off personalised copies of the devotional, having each person's name printed on the cover.

The level of interest this year in this season of prayer and fasting has been so encouraging with people choosing to fast all manner of things from missing certain meals to fasting sugar, soft drinks, going vegetarian, full fast, fasting chocolate, fasting carbs, the list goes on and on. The level of discussion during this time was exhilarating of how people were finding the fasting and what God was doing in them as they did. I’m so pleased that many people found this season of great personal benefit and I'm excited to see what the LORD does in us personally and as a church as a result. Well done everybody who chose to seek to grow at the start of the New Year in your relationship with the LORD. I’m very proud of you.

Main Events

Over recent months our times together on Sundays have continued to develop. We as leaders always long for more, however we’re so grateful for every step forward.

Jenny Stokes was baptised during our Main Event on 22nd October. This was a truly joyous occasion of seeing Jenny want to take the step of believers baptism, seeing all that it meant to her and seeing so many friends and family join us for this occasion. We do hope in the year ahead that there will be others who will be baptised following becoming a believer in Christ.

Steve Hudson shared with us passionately about our Christians Against Poverty Job Club at our Main Event on Sunday 12th November.

On Sunday 26th November We had the massive joy of having our dear friends Olo and Lila Cieslar and their children from Poland share with us at our Main Event. Olo and Lila serve passionately at their local church with Olo being one of the church leaders there. Olo and Lila both work for the Chosen Poland. It was such a blessing having them spend time with us.

On the 3rd December we had an amazing family service with ‘Small Paul’ and a Balloon Nativity . It was wonderful seeing so many people from our Parent and Toddler Group and hearing Paul share something of the Good News with those attending that Sunday.

On Sunday 17th December following one of our Advent Main Events we had our very

first Christmas Braai ! What can I say! This was an amazing feast like we’ve never had as a church before. With two BBQ’s and a Fire Pit and more meat than you could sink a battleship with. Massive thanks to Wayne, Liza, Bruce and Tim for all their work in putting this together as well as everyone else who got stuck in helping clearing up after. The bar has been set high for future Christmas meals!

On Sunday 28th January we had the joy of having the Celebrate School of Supernatural Ministries come to be with us at our Main Event. Rev Stuart Gregg preached a great message and the students gave words for people to respond to and get prayed for. Many of our congregation following the service received prayer ministry.

On Sunday 4th February we had our Compassion Sunday with Chege Mwangi speaking. It was wonderful to hear from Chege personal

2

testimony of how child sponsorship with Compassion transforms lives and also it was fascinating and challenging to see statistics on the screen from those in our congregation who sponsor children with Compassion.

Over recent months we have had some great sermon series, in particular the WOW - Way of Worship Series, helping people to understand and see breakthroughs in the area of worship.

More recently we have started our 360 Degree Worship Series. It is something that has been wanting to be birthed into our church for many months and now we’re being challenged in four key areas of worshipping the LORD with all our minds, bodies, Spirits and the way we interact with our neighbours.

Treasure Hunting

On Saturday 10th February we went ‘Treasure Hunting’ with the Celebrate School of Supernatural Ministry around Skipton. Thembi, Sherri, Roy, me, Joanna and the team from Bradford took part. This is another step forward as we truly want to see an emphasis on being directed by the Holy Spirit. We are hopeful to put on similar activities in the future.

New Life

Over the past month we have had the joy of having two new babies born into our congregation - something truly amazing.

Bon Voyage

We’ve sadly said our fond farewells to Timothy, Cassandra, Abigail and Leah who have now left the UK to emigrate to Australia. Tim and Cass and their children have been outstanding members of the church serving in different capacities such as treasurer and Trustee and being faithful in contributing to the life of the church. They will be missed. Please pray for them in the coming months as they adjust to building a new life in Australia.

Bereavement

On January 26th we said our farewell to Richard Tingey at a packed funeral service and one which shared the gospel to all those attending.

3

Church Treasury

For several years now JJ has had to step into the role of treasurer at Champions Church. Thankfully some of this role Adrian has taken off JJ’s shoulders, which we are incredibly grateful for. We were trying to hand over the accounts to an external bookkeeper, however this relationship sadly did not work out and so we are now back with JJ and Adrian overseeing the champions church bookkeeping. Clearly having the senior minister's wife overseeing the church accounts is not where we want to be at, as we seek to achieve best practice and transparency in our church governance and cannot be sustained whilst working full time, with a baby to look after as well as a plethora of other things that get laid at a senior ministers wife’s door. At present we have brought our accounts back in house, are catching up with our gift aid application, are trialling some new software to make the management of our accounts easier.

We truly need to appoint someone as treasurer, ideally from inside the congregation, paid or voluntary to take this responsibility off JJ’s shoulders. Anyone who believes they can help in this regard please speak to JJ or myself.

Gift Aid

We are now finally making progress in our application for a backdated claim for Gift Aid to the HMRC. This has been an ongoing issue which has been very difficult and time consuming to resolve. When the full backdated claim has come in we intend to use this money to help with our building project.

In the process of preparing our backdated gift aid application we have discovered there is only a small percentage of our congregation that are currently signed up to our gift aid scheme. We believe this is causing us as a church to be missing out on possibly hundreds if not thousands of pounds of extra income each year. It costs nothing extra to those taxpayers in our congregation who give to the Lord at Champions Church to become part of our gift aid scheme. Please if you are a taxpayer would you fill out a very simple form to enable us to claim gift aid as you give to the church.

Building Ideas

We have over the past months been looking at solutions to our children's ministry needing increased space in order to separate the age groups and have room to grow into. We have had site visits to look at the practical possibilities of solving this issue from both recommended local builders and local architects.

We are awaiting some preliminary artists' impressions of what a possible extension might look like. We are wrestling with the idea of having an extension down the whole side of the building which would enhance our toilet facilities, give us room to

4

grow into a bigger space for Main Events, relocate the church office and provide extra capacity for our children's ministry. (Further details can be found later in this document.)

CAP Job Club

Our Christians Against Poverty Job Club continues to be a significant ministry within the area for helping people gain the confidence and skills to negotiate the job market as well as being a great means of sharing our Christian faith with members of the community. Recently our Job Club was visited by Julian Smith MP. Following his visit Julian phoned personally Steve Hudson our Job Club manager to say what an amazing work we are doing. It’s been wonderful to see in this present Job Club Alan Iveson, George Mackley, Adrian Sharp and Lorna Mackley all serving in helping with the Job Club as well as other volunteers from SBC and other churches. We recently applied for a £2000 grant to help with the costs of running the Job Club and we were just told the other week that we were successful in being awarded this grant. On March 1st we had ‘Fish Chips and Magic Tricks’ with guest evangelist Rod Williams who not only shared some amazing magic tricks but shared his powerful testimony of coming to faith in Christ and the gospel message.

Mini Champions Parent and Toddler Group

Our Mini Champions Parent and Toddler Group continues to develop. I’m so thrilled that after running this key ministry for many years at the church we now are seeing bridges which help people move from attending the Toddler Group to visiting our Sunday Mini Champions Programme and Main Events as well as seeing those attending our Main Events coming along to

our Toddler Group. Numbers attending differ week on week, however on one or two occasions over the past few months we have seen almost fifty parents, grandparents and children attend. Real genuine friendships have been made in this group. Jackie, Lorna, Thembi, Adrian and JJ have been simply outstanding. I also want to thank Steve Carter who volunteers each week to help fetch the toys out of the loft for us. We are at this time looking for further volunteers to help from our congregation with

5

this ministry. Please speak to one of the helpers of the group or myself if you are interested in knowing more about helping at our Toddler group.

New Church Website

We have had our existing website for many years and despite it having served us very well it is now experiencing issues with being able to be updated and things like various applications not working. Therefore we took the decision to focus on putting a team together to build a new church website. I’m pleased to say that in recent months Alan Iveson has been hard at work, supported by George Mackley and JJ, to put this together, with Richard Gibson and Vinia Wordsworth taking some photos during the services. We are praying this new website will prove very helpful in pointing people to our church.

Women of Faith

Our Women’s ministry ‘Women of Faith’ has continued to be a massive blessing to the women of Champions Church and beyond. Most weeks someone from the group will share their testimony to encourage each other, and in doing so, get to know one another better. These times have truly been powerful as really moving stories have been shared and hearing how the Lord has moved in these women's lives is transformative to those that are listening. They have also had a

second Paint & Pizza night, and are soon planning a film night.

Conclusion

Throughout the past year we have once again seen the faithfulness of God. Things like the cost of living crisis and inflation have been running rampant and yet the Lord has blessed us and helped us through the past year. It has been wonderful to have seen new families join with us and it is encouraging to see things of challenge such as prayer and fasting seeing people wanting to participate and discuss this with others.

Although there are many areas needing improvement and development, we can truly be grateful to the Lord for being able to look back over the past year and observe some great leaps forward.

6

The Vision Ahead

Before we look at some things that we are looking forward to seeing breakthrough with and events that are upcoming in the year ahead it’s good to share the foundations of Champions Church’s vision.

Strapline

Our strapline as a church is: ‘ a Community Becoming Champions Through Faith in Christ.’

Everything we do, the people that we are, all of our focus comes from our faith in Jesus Christ. It’s through salvation in Jesus Christ that we become Champions.

Core Values:

We have a set of core values which help us understand what we want to become as a church community. These are:

Ambassadors

Having received a restored relationship with God through Christ we are chosen to take the message that God desires reuniting with people and has made a way in which we can be forgiven and restored. “Go into the world. Go everywhere and announce the message of God’s good news to one and all. (Mark:16:15)

Faith Living

To truly follow Christ requires embracing a life of faith living which is vital to us becoming the champions God wants us to be. At Champions church we will celebrate every story of God doing amazing feats amongst us as we step out in faith. ‘And without faith it is impossible to please God’. (Hebrews 11:6)

Overcomers

We know we will face challenges and trials in life but God desires us not to be defeated and downtrodden but instead to be overcomers, living victoriously over the challenges we face through our faith in Christ. ‘For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world’. (1 John 5:4)

God is Boss

Authentic Christ followers acknowledge Christ as sovereign in all areas of their lives. Through the Bible God speaks to us today and we should naturally want to please our heavenly Father. Jesus lived a life of seeking to always please the Father in all he did and so should we. (Philippians 2:1-30.)

Relevance

We desire to always present the timeless and God-breathed scriptures in ways and means which people can understand and apply to their 21st century lives. ‘All

7

Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness’.(2 Timothy 3:16)

Honour

We want to be a community who will honour ourselves, church members and the church we are part of, by practising a positive confession of ourselves, each other and the name of Champions Church. In this way we build a very strong church community which builds ourselves up, our neighbours and our church.

Multi-Generational/Relational

Our heart is that all ages are represented at Champions Church and all are valued as being fully part of the church family. We also encourage each generation to grow in relationship with those of a different generation to themselves and that this brings a life and vitality to our church community.

Excellence

At Champions church we value excellence as God deserves our very best. We know God gives the very best to us and so this should be expressed in our lives lived out in worship towards him. We are not looking for perfect people but rather people looking to give God the very best they can give to him.

Hunger

We want to be a people who passionately pursue the presence of God in our personal lives and when we come together in worship. We believe as we hunger for more of God that we will see miracles and experience his powerful presence.

Assemblies of God GB

We’re a church that is part of a growing family of churches within the United Kingdom called Assemblies of God Great Britain. leaders of Champions Church will regularly attend Assemblies of God zone days, area conferences, national conferences and much more.

Our Mission and Call

There has never been a more important time to preach the full canon of God’s timeless holy word to this generation in a language they can understand, to preach the cross, to preach salvation in Christ alone. We believe we become Champions through salvation and discipleship in Christ. The gospel changes lives. Our town needs a Bible believing, gospel preaching, Holy Spirit filled church fit for the 21[st] century. In the season ahead we need to truly be focussed on seeing people saved and discipled. This is our vision.

It has never been so important to share the Good News with those around us and to make disciples of all nations.

8

Therefore, all of the following practical aspects are to facilitate this vision:

Guest Ministry

In the year ahead we want to continue to enhance our Sunday Main Events by having guest ministry by those who carry different gifts that will bless the body of Christ. We hope that our own congregation will make the most of these visiting speakers and also invite friends and family to come along.

Building Vision

We are truly grateful to those in past generations who purchased both this building and its land. During the time of Pastor Peter Eaves an extension was made to the rear of the church building in order to have a better meeting space for the children during the Sunday services. This continues to be a massive blessing to our church, however now we are needing to grow our building capacity again.

We have seen over the past twelve years development of our church building and grounds in order to better serve both our church and wider community. Some years back we fundraised to establish our own car park, then during lockdown we fundraised for a transformed church kitchen in order to serve the needs of our growing Job Club. More recently we fundraised to transform our Main Hall by establishing new electrics, new windows, taking down walls and so much more. Having done all that we installed new audio visual equipment to enable us to continue to livestream our Main Events with better sound and vision.

When we came out of lockdown we had to start our children's ministry from the ground up with having no childrens leaders! Our children are a church’s lifeblood and so for some weeks I would record a sermon, then project it onto the wall whilst I taught the children in the back room. Thankfully God raised up children's ministry leaders - Thembi, Lorna, Annie and Liza. More children began to attend and now we face a new challenge of the space they have in the back room is not big enough for our growing children's ministry.

We always said as a church leadership that ‘our growth as a church will not be defined by the size of these walls but these walls will be defined by our growth.’

We fully intend to keep that promise.

As we have already said we have already had two sets of people - builders and architects visit the site and it is gradually becoming clear the idea we have for our next step.

We’re daunted by another fundraising project which will include drawing up architects plans, gaining planning permission, fundraising from our congregation, fundraising from further afield as well as looking for grants from different award bodies. However, despite the feeling of being daunted, we know with certainty the

9

magnitude of God’s faithfulness. God has always come through over all these years as a church and we’re excited to see what he does in the coming months.

We’ve recognised that if we just focussed on extending the children's ministry we could solve one issue and then soon find ourselves with another one to solve. If the number of children increases that means more adults and that would mean our space in our Main Hall might soon become too small also. Alongside that our toilets need improvement. Therefore, rather than just look solely at more childrens space we feel it important to deal with multiple needs and build a more comprehensive extension of building all the way down the side of the church building in order to transform our toilets, allow the ability for our Main Events to have growth space when it is needed, provide better office space and also a greatly enlarged children's ministry area.

To try and give you an idea of what we’re currently thinking please see the following diagrams:

We would like to have a folding wall separating the existing Main Hall and the extension so that when the extra space is needed we can fold the doors and create the larger room area.

We are in the preliminary stages and there may well be challenges with what type of structure can be built. Therefore your prayers concerning this project are so needed as we start to develop this project further.

We know it is early days but we want to begin to give the opportunity for people who would like to sow into this ‘expansion project’.

Therefore at the end of today's service there will be a special vision offering taken for those who would like to sow into this project.

Perhaps you have not come prepared to give today and you would appreciate praying about it first. This is not a problem, simply place your offering in an envelope and write on it ‘Vision Offering’ and place it in the basket on a Sunday.

Alternatively you can give to this project by using the QR code.

10

Mini Champions Children’s Ministry

Alongside the expansion project of our physical building our vision requires that our team of children's ministry leaders and helpers grows in order to get us to the point where we can split our age groups on a Sunday. The greatest ministry for seeing people find faith in Christ is the children's ministry and therefore our children's ministry is vitally important in seeing precious souls reached with the gospel.

You might think to yourself you have little experience with children, that you wouldn’t know where to start and think how could you possibly help with this ministry. I think the vast majority of people think like this! Let me encourage you to speak to Thembi, Lorna, Liza, Annie, JJ or myself. Like with anything in life don’t worry about having not done childrens ministry before. We can provide all the training and bags of encouragement. What we’re looking for is people that want to share our amazing God with the children and people that care about kids. The rest we can teach. And let me encourage you after serving for many years in childrens and youth ministry, being involved in this ministry will be such a rich blessing to you personally whilst you are also a blessing to the children you teach.

Prayer, Fasting and Bible Reading

In order for us to be ‘a community becoming champions through faith in Christ’ we need to be connected to the vine through regular times of prayer and the reading of the Bible. We know that in our world it is becoming more challenging as other things constantly vie for our time, however without these times we become ineffective in sharing with others a relationship with God that is not present. Therefore, throughout the year we will put on further days of prayer and fasting with devotional materials and encourage congregants to read the Bible through challenge, making resources available and making this part of our vocabulary as a church.

Digital Footprints

We believe that our vision to bring preaching and teaching of the word of God to people makes the livestreaming of our church services invaluable to enrich a much wider audience in order that they will either grow in their faith or come to faith through it. It provides a service to those whom cannot manage to attend a service in person. It also provides a record of teaching and preaching which rather than being a one off event to a limited number of people can be provided to a much wider audience at any time in the future. Therefore, it is essential that we continue to develop our online presence.

We know that for a congregation our size we have been punching far above our weight for some time now in this area, however we know that we have barely scratched the surface in engaging effectively with an online congregation or reaching a limitless audience online.

11

I cannot tell you the countless number of people whom this ministry has blessed. People across the UK, people in the United States, Philippines, Vietnam, Ireland, India, and Russia to name just a few have been blessed by our church’s services. I’m truly amazed at what God has done. Several people have come to in person services as a result of viewing us online in some way first.

We recognise we have now 212 videos now online; however, we would like to get to the stage where we can edit previously viewed livestreams in order to have the option to view just the messages. This clearly is a time consuming activity of which I have so little of, however perhaps in time a team will emerge where tasks like this can be shared.

Alongside the development of our YouTube channel we will be rolling out our brand new Champions Church website over the coming weeks, helping people looking for a Bible believing and gospel preaching church in their locality to find us. We had hoped to have been able to show you the finished website however we will leave that till another occasion when we’re put some more finishing touches to it.

Each week we endeavour to upload adverts for our services on our Facebook and ‘X’ pages for our Sunday Main Events and midweek activities. In a world where most people engage with such social media and where putting things in print is so costly it makes sense to make the most of advertising this way. Our vision is to ensure everyone in our area knows where they can find in person or online a Bible believing gospel preaching church through things like our online posts on Facebook, ‘X’, YouTube etc. Now this is where you all can play your part. If you are a user of ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) or you have a Facebook account or have a YouTube account, you can truly help us engage with a much wider audience by sharing our content with your friends. Also Liking our posts makes a huge difference as does Subscribing to our YouTube channel. We know currently we have a couple of people within our church who regularly like our posts. You guys are our heroes! However, what an impact we could have online if many others from our congregation did the same? If more people shared our adverts, our Main Event links, Liked our content, what more of a reach could we have? Please I urge you to help us do this which is completely free, but may help to win souls for eternity and build the local church.

Our vision is that it won’t just be one or two people sharing our live streams but that many people will choose to do this each week and therefore create much greater digital footprints and reach a much wider audience.

Khevra

As part of fulfilling our vision to see people grow in discipleship it is my heart to call a number of people together in order to impart and teach and challenge in a similar way to how Jesus called the twelve to be his disciples. This is something commanded in scripture to go and ‘make disciples’ but also is a personal desire of mine to be able to pour myself into others.

12

A Changing Model

In order for us to fulfil our vision of a ‘community becoming Champions Through Faith in Christ’ certain hindrances to this vision will need addressing. Put simply at the moment everything from paper clips to paper cups, paint to PowerPoints is forced to pass through myself or myself and JJ. It’s not that we’re not willing to serve, we love to serve, but for us to continue growing as a church we will need to work differently or else it will be us who are the blockage to the growth of the church!

We need to move from a ‘hourglass model’ where the sand is forced to gradually pass through a very narrow gap, to an ‘umbrella model’ where oversight is given (the umbrella) but raindrops fall from the edges of the umbrella (others taking responsibility of set areas) to pools below (people, tasks etc).

As a leadership we can instruct how we want things to look and be done, but the implementation of this needs to be then carried out by others, freeing up much time and mental energy so leadership can strategize and move the church forward rather than being consumed with maintenance tasks.

We know that we all have different skill sets, personal situations and time constraints, however we believe that there is a raindrop fit just right for you which will serve the body of Christ and help us to grow as a local church and not be stifled through too much having to pass through a narrow leadership. This journey won’t be a five-minute transition but step by step as people take on raindrops we will surely advance and take ground.

Worship

We will want in the year ahead to continue to build our focus on worship. We believe worship prepares the soil for the gospel to flourish. We want to see our congregation discover more of God in times of worship and also for our worship leading up front to see more musicians and singers taking part. Recently our church was blessed with a top of the range keyboard, however it seems a crime for this to be unused most of the time. We’re trusting the Lord to raise up those who will serve in our worship ministry in the coming weeks and months ahead.

Developing a Holistic Church

In the year ahead to ensure we are a ‘Community Becoming Champions Through Faith in Christ’, our vision will be to have a balanced diet and balanced ministries which will make us a much healthier church both now and in the future. If you picture the cross it points in three different ways. It ‘ Reaches Up, Reaches Out and Reaches Down’

13

Reach Up

We want to ensure that as Champions Church we cultivate a culture of personal growth and development helping us to reach up to become all that God has for us. We want to cultivate ministries which will grow mentoring, sharpen thinking, challenge, stretch, grow and release people into their God given destinies. We hope this year to cultivate a Khevra, leadership development and a Business and Entrepreneurs group. We always want people who are part of Champions Church to know there is always more room for growth.

Reach Out

Our vision is to up our game with sharing the Good News with our community in order to see people come to faith in Christ. We will seek to foster this through inviting evangelistic speakers to our Main Events, encouraging a culture of invitation to our events and through encouraging our congregation to take part in Missions training such as the Kairos course.

Reaching Down

We will continue to help and serve our community and wider afield through ministries such as our Christians Against Poverty Job Club and through sponsorship of children through Compassion.

The Why?

We believe that for the health of the church all three components need to be in place. Naturally churches see the importance of reaching down and helping people in need. Psalm 40:2 the Psalmist states ‘He lifted me out of the slimy pit... he set my feet on a rock.’ However, we know that we don’t want to just fulfil people’s physical needs, as their greatest need is salvation. But there is more, we’re told in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that we are ‘being transformed into his image with ever increasing glory’. There is a need for reaching down to help people, a need for salvation, but also a need for sanctification, growth in discipleship, cultivating healthy thinking, mentoring and stretching into all God has purposed us to be.

Preaching and Teaching Focus

Another aspect of our vision is to foster development of people’s minds, bodies and spirits through our preaching, teaching, interview and testimony. We need to recognise that our God created our minds, bodies and spirits and died to redeem them all. God is interested in our development in all these areas. We’re told to love the Lord with all of our ‘heart...soul...mind...and strength.’ and therefore we will be focussing in the coming months on how we do this. We want to be able to equip our

14

people to be able to articulate a defence of their faith in the marketplace, we want our people to think about ways of keeping their bodies healthy and also deepen their spiritual intimacy with the Lord. We also want to wrestle with what it truly means to love our neighbour as ourselves.

Going For the Fifty

We’ve seen some gradual numerical growth in recent years as a congregation to which we give God all the glory and this despite all the challenges of things like Covid and lockdowns etc.

However, what we long to see is our church break through the fifty people mark on regular Sunday’s. Would you pray that God would help us to break through this glass ceiling and also would you consider who you can invite to church in the weeks ahead. We believe God has growth for Champions Church in the year ahead. We’re believing God for the 50!
