The Happold Foundation is a charity dedicated to supporting organisations that use engineering to improve people’s lives. We fund projects that undertake vital work in addressing challenges such as the climate emergency, social inequality and inclusion.

We are delighted to bring you our latest report. Over the next few pages we’ll share some of the inspirational work our partner organisations embarked on last year, as well as how we helped support them. We are so proud to be able to contribute to the work that plays such a significant role in improving people’s environments, and in turn their quality of life.

At the Happold Foundation we are dedicated to supporting charities and initiatives whose work has the most benefit to people they work with. We strive to provide funding to projects that enable people to thrive in their communities and have the environment, inclusivity and diversity embedded in the work that they do.

We also believe we have a responsibility to share knowledge with children and young people entering the world of engineering. We do this through supporting education projects for students from primary school age through to university students, providing opportunities to learn more about engineering and the contribution we can make to the world around us. We aim to inspire young people and play a part in finding the next industry leaders for our sector.

As well as the fantastic work our partners undertake, we are also very grateful to our trustees and ambassadors, who all give their time voluntarily to ensure the Foundation works in the most effective way and whose support makes the work we do possible.

Our funding programmes strive to support initiatives that are designed to better the lives of marginalised communities, encourage greater access to education and improve the sustainability of the built environment.

We work across four key focus areas to ensure our resources reach as many communities as possible.

Human Development

Our Human Development forcus area supports our partner organisations who work with communities in under-developed areas on high quality engineering projects that improve health and wellbeing.

Futures

Our Futures focus introduces pupils aged 6-18 to Engineering, Maths, Science and Technology. We engage with partner organisations who work with teachers and schools to run exciting, hands-on education programmes that teach children about sustainable design in the natural and built environment.

Education

Our Education work supports undergraduate students who want to pursue a career in engineering and design, through funding scholarships and awards. We also celebrate academic teaching excellence through our awards programme.

Thinking

Our Thinking offer brings together people from all over our industry to discuss, debate and share knowledge on issues society is facing, the impact it is having on our cities and infrastructure, and how engineers will respond to these issues, with particular focus on climate change, health, and sustainable development. We facilitate events, workshops and lectures.

Our work in Human Development strives to enable disadvantaged communities to access high quality engineering projects that will improve their environments. We provide grants for initiatives that make a significant positive impact to the people they work with; supporting organisations that focus on using engineering as a tool for furthering human development.

OUR IMPACT IN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

2 Organisational Grants 1 Exceptional Project Grant

REALL

Organisational Grants

REALL work across Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, India and Pakistan to provide opportunities for communities to purchase secure, affordable green housing. Their housing programme has provided thousands of people with housing, jobs and access to clean water and sanitation. Their projects also aim to be environmentally sustainable, with savings of over 100,000 tonnes of carbon emissions to date.

The Happold Foundation has been providing Organisational Grants as our main funding programme for Human Development projects since 2019. The grants provide £30,000 funding per year for three years to carefully selected organisations to use towards their invaluable work.

In 2022 – 2023, we awarded grants to REALL, Build It International and Renewable World.

The Foundation is proud to be able to support an organisation that works to alleviate poverty while also making a positive contribution to the economic and environmental future of the community.

Build It International

Build It International work with young people in Zambia, providing access to vocational training in construction. The students also work to improve their local communities; using their skills to build projects such as hospitals, schools and community centres.

This year, the Happold Foundation provided Build It International with their second Organisational Grant, which is a real testament to the invaluable contribution the charity makes to improving the lives of the people it works with.

Renewable World

This year also saw Renewable World successfully secure their second Organisational Grant. We continue to be impressed by the charity’s work to increase access to inclusive, community-owned renewable energy systems.

With projects in rural Nepal and Africa, Renewable World’s utility systems also empower disadvantaged communities to achieve sustainable livelihoods. To date, over 2000 farmers and smallholders have been trained in how to run and maintain energy, water and clean cooking solutions.

In addition, we also provided the charity with an exceptional project grant to enable them to provide students with tablets for remote learning over the Covid lockdown.

Organisational Grants

Opening up opportunities for young people to discover their future in engineering is a key focus of our work at the Happold Foundation. We support initatives that work with children age 5-18 to introduce careers in the built environment.

We carefully select organisations who run projects that are socially inclusive, environmentally conscious and support diversity.

The key support that the Happold Foundation offers as part of our Futures focus area is funding through our Organisational Grants. The grants provide £30,000 per year for a threeyear period to organisations that work in areas of education and the built environment.

From student workshops and build projects to training for teachers and architectural students, the organisation puts their young people at the heart of their projects.

We strive to support organisations who combat climate change, challenge social inequality and provide exceptional educational programmes for young people.

Class of Your Own (COYO)

COYO create built environment and infrastructure projects for students through their Design Engineer Construct! (DEC!) programme. We are really impressed with COYO’s dedication to incorporating social, economic and environmental themes into their educational programmes.

Last year, we awarded a three-year grant to Class of Your Own, and continued our support for Matt+Fiona, who were the first recipients of a Futures Organisational Grant in 2021.

As well as their DEC! initiative, COYO also runs in person and virtual work experience placements, working alongside employers and schools to provide a diverse and wide range of opportunities.

Our work in the USA

LA Promise Fund

We work with several innovative and exciting education programmes in the USA. We’re proud to be able to support initiatives that provide education and work experience opportunities for the next generation of engineers in the country.

Working with High School students across Los Angeles, the LA Promise Fund is a non-profit organisation that helps young people to access college and further education. They are particularly focussed on securing placements for students who are at risk of oppression or marginalisation.

ACE Mentorship Program

During 2022-2023, we worked with the LA Promise Fund to sponsor The Intern Project (TIP) providing three placements at Buro Happold’s LA office and one at a local non-profit organisation.

The ACE program is designed for High School students in schools from NYC, LA and Boston who are passionate about pursuing a career in architecture, engineering or construction. We’re proud to have provided two $2000 scholarships as part of the program.

Looking Forward

We will be starting a new cycle for two organisational grants in 2023, and are delighted to announce that next year’s recipiences have been selected. They are Matt+Fiona, and Catalytic Action, a charity that uses design and architecture to provide opportunities to displaced and disadvantaged children across 20 countries.

We look forward to sharing more about the great work Catalytic Action do in the coming months.

Investing in our future engineers is an important part of the work we do at the Happold Foundation. We believe that by providing opportunities for young people to thrive in their education we can help them to shape their careers in the built environment. We seek to fund initiatives that create exciting and valuable opportunities for students studying engineering.

OUR IMPACT IN EDUCATION

➜ Royal Academy of Engineers Scholarship

for the third year. The prize gives final year students at the University an opportunity to work as part of an interdisciplinary team, following a brief to create their own unique and innovative designs.

Royal Academy of Engineers (RAEng) Scholarship

Now in the 2nd year of a 3-year sponsorship with the Royal Academy of Engineers’ ELS Scholarship. We provided six enhanced scholarships for university students studying in the UK. The scholarships consist of grant funding, a mentor and a paid internship at a Buro Happold office.

This year, the brief was to design a new college building for Oxford University on a site in the centre of the city, at the heart of the University. The building was for a group which is currently underrepresented within the University community, and was to comprise a series of bedrooms, dining and meeting spaces. The designs needed to keep energy targets and environmentally responsible design in mind.

In total, 28 teams entered the competition, with prizes and commendations awarded by a panel of experts.

The Happold Brilliant Award

Every year, we celebrate the educators that demonstrate excellence in the teaching of building services engineering. In partnership with the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineering (CIBSE), we sponsor the Happold Brilliant Award, which is presented to an institution that provides outstanding education provision.

The 2022 prize was awarded to University College London’s Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering to recognise the outstanding contribution of the Institute’s MEng Engineering and Architectural Design course. The programme is a four-year course jointly designed and delivered by the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, and UCL Civil Environmental and Geomatic Engineering.

The CIBSE panel were impressed by the high quality of graduates from the course and the projects that students were able to get involved with during their studies.

Pando Days

The TED project was an amazing opportunity, and I learned a lot about holistic design by working with the architects and engineers as a team. We achieved our goal of producing a kit of parts design with a strong environmental focus, whilst also remembering our neurodiverse target group throughout.” University of Bath Team student ” “

Pando Days is an annual program teaching teams of students in higher education, project-based courses that aim to influence a more resilient LA County and advance the Sustainable Development Goals.

Looking forward

In the next year, we will continue to support the fantastic initatives that we have this year, including the University of Bath Ted Happold Prize, ACE scholarships and the Happold Brilliant Award.

In addition to the partners we already support, next year we will be sponsoring the National Register of Access Consultants new 'Inclusive

Design training for professionals' course. We are excited to have the opportunity to further support the growth of our colleagues working in the build environment.

Encouraging discussion and debate is an important part of tackling the challenges faced by our sector. By providing opportunities for engineers to share ideas and knowledge, we can strengthen our approach to creating solutions to issues such as the climate emergency, inclusion and diversity.

City Conversations

21 Feburary 2023 - Mind The Gap: Revisiting Education for the 21st Century

A key focus of our Thinking hub is to deliver our City Conversations, a series of online conversations that bring together a panel of influential industry leaders and some of the rising stars in the sector, talking about key topics in the industry. All events are open to an international audience and free to attend.

10 May 2022 - Urban Green Spaces Revisited

Our Mind the Gap conversation Looked at different and changing education routes into engineering, - the impact it had on the industry, and what could be done to encourage a more diverse range of people to join the profession.

Following on from our Conversation with a similar theme that took place in 2017, Urban Green Spaces Revisited looked at the need to look at the wider impacts of Green Spaces on health and wellbeing.

28 March 2023 - From Crunch to Crisis: How the Energy Economy will shape our lives

10 October 2022 - London 2012 Revisited

During the From Crunch to Crisis event our panel discussed the impact of the energy crisis and how we could learn from it as well as exploring what we needed to do to adapt in the future.

In partnership with the Engineering Club a live Conversation was held at The Building Centre. London 2012 Revisited sought to analyse if the 2012 Olympics had achieved the legacy it set out to create, discussing the urban impact, social uplift and sustainability goals.

Since our charity was founded over 25 years ago, we have worked to encourage and promote those working in the built environment to help shape the future of engineering. We understand how engineering can make a difference, so we talk about the key issues that affect us, support tomorrow’s engineers, provide engineering services and career training to communities most in need and encourage thought leadership throughout our community.

Accounts for the Period to 30th April 2023

I have reviewed the Financial Statements for the Happold Foundation for the year ending 30th April 2023 using the records and information provided to me by the trustees.

I have inspected the bank statements to check both the transactions made during the year and balances held at the end of the year. I have found no evidence of any misstatement or incorrectly recorded transactions in the underlying records.
