Note for accounts:
The Happold Foundation receives the bulk of its income from Buro Happold Limited. For the last few years the accounts have reflected the total donations that BHL has indicated it will pay to the Happold Foundation which has given us 'donations due’ and ‘donations in relation to the prior year’ on our accounts.
We are moving away from this approach and consequently have restated the last 3 years of accounts to reflect only the monies received. This gives a clearer picture of our actual position – the funds will be recognised when received.

Our Focus Areas
The Happold Foundation is a charity dedicated to supporting the application of engineering skills and experience to make a positive impact on people’s lives. We work with partners, students, educators, engineers and researchers to shape a community that wants to improve the performance of the built environment. We plan initiatives, allocate resources and contribute knowledge across four focus areas:
Human Development
Our work in Human Development seeks to connect communities in under-developed areas with skilled engineers to work on high quality engineering projects that improve health and wellbeing. We also support education and training programmes for people living in remote areas.
Futures
Our Futures focus introduces pupils age 6-18 to Engineering, Maths, Science and Technology. We engage with partner organisations and alumni to work with teachers and schools to run exciting, hands on education programmes that teach children about design in the natural and built environment.
Education
Our Education work supports undergraduate students who want to pursue a career in engineering through funding scholarships and arranging work experience opportunities. We also celebrate academic teaching excellence through our awards programme.
Thinking
Our Thinking offer brings together people from all over our industry to discuss, debate and share knowledge on issues society is facing, the impact it is having on our cities and infrastructure, and how engineers will respond to these issues, with particular focus on climate change, health, and sustainable development. We support research, provide travel scholarships and facilitate events, workshops and lectures.
Welcome to our 2021 Impact Report.
We’re bringing this report to you after the most unusual and challenging twelve months that both the Happold Foundation and our partner organisations have ever faced. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had far reaching consequences across the globe and has presented many difficulties within the work we do and also within the wider engineering community. I continue to be very impressed by the resilience the organisations we work with have shown in continuing their invaluable work, demonstrating real innovation and diversity in the way they have adjusted to the ever-changing situation.
At the Happold Foundation we are dedicated to ensuring that we provide funding to initiatives that provide the most impact. We carefully consider the organisations we partner with, looking for those who work with communities, students and young engineers from diverse backgrounds.
To highlight just a few of the projects we’ve been able to fund, our Thinking focus area has seen the City Conversations move online to reach an international audience. As part of our Human Development focus area, we’ve continued to support our Organisational Grant recipients Renewable World and Build It International. Our Futures focus area has welcomed two new initiatives, the LA Promise Intern Program and Teach the Future Scotland, further expanding our support to school age children. We gave the 2020 HF Student Scholars a scholarship bursary to help with university costs, and awarded our first Ted Happold Prize to a group of final year students at Bath University Architecture and Civil Engineering.
I hope that the next few pages will give a real insight into how our partners have still continued to do such fantastic work in the face of such adversity, and how our funding has helped them adapt and continue to enable communities and projects to access the support they need.
Thank you to all of our trustees, the partners at Buro Happold, the alumni, partner organisations and wider community for your hard work and commitment. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to help all of the wonderful initiatives we’ve had the privilege of being involved with.

In 2020 the Happold Foundation’s generous grant enabled us to start two new innovative initiatives in response to the challenges of Covid 19…so thank you for helping us to make a real and lasting difference to so many young people in Zambia.
OUR IMPACT:
£60,000 funding
Organisational Grants
2
Our work in Human Development focuses on helping communities to access invaluable services to help them improve their futures. We provide funding to organisations that carry out initiatives we feel can make a significant positive impact on the communities they work with. Our Organisational Grant scheme provides chosen organisations with £30k per year for three years, allowing them to strategically improve their projects and the support they’re able to offer.
We are currently in our second year of funding to Build It International and Renewable World as part of our Organisational Grant initiative. Both charities were selected because of their approach to helping to find solutions for not only technical problems, but also social-economical challenges.
Build It International
Build It International run vocational training for young people in Zambia. Their training centre teaches practical skills in the construction industry, offering young people with lifelong career opportunities to support themselves and their families, as well as building new clinics and schools.
During the pandemic, Build It International had to think creatively to enable them to still bring education to their students. Adaptations to their courses included providing tablets to students to allow them to access distance learning, enabling new video lessons to be uploaded each week.
During 2020, Build It trained 190 young men and women across nine courses, which exceeded their goal of 180 during the pandemic.
2020 also saw the launch of the Safe Hands Appeal. The appeal involves installing permanent hand wash stations and providing vital PPE supplies at schools across Zambia, helping to improve hygiene and benefitting over 20,000 children.
Renewable World
Renewable World provide energy, water and clean cooking solutions to remote communities in Nepal and Kenya. Their projects install renewable technology for utilities and a training programme to educate households in how to use and maintain the systems. Their projects provide new employment, income and education opportunities as well as new utilities; helping to overcome poverty.
During 2020 and 2021, Renewable World launched a number of new projects to continue providing utilities to off-grid communities. In addition, they adapted existing projects to ensure communities have access to basic requirements for the prevention of coronavirus, including hand washing stations and distributing hand sanitizer and face masks. The charity aims to support those who have been affected by the pandemic for the long term, in particular helping those who need employment opportunities.
The charity’s current goal of reaching 100,000 people through provision of renewable energy services is on track and is forecast to be exceeded by over 4,000 by the end of 2022.

Opening up opportunities for young people to discover their future in engineering is a key focus of our work at the Happold Foundation. We believe that by supporting young people from primary school up to A Level, we can help to open up the possibility of a career in the built environment for children from a number of diverse backgrounds. We work to carefully select organisations who run projects that are socially inclusive and bring a wider benefit to their communities.
The last 12 months have seen us establish partnerships with two new organisations, the LA Promise Fund in Los Angeles and Teach the Future Scotland, as well as continuing to support our existing partners.
LA Promise Fund
The LA Promise Fund works with schools in the Los Angeles area to run impactful learning opportunities across the region. We support the organisation with The Intern Project (TIP), an initiative that provides high school students with work placement opportunities. TIP also offers businesses to invest in the development of future talent and generating social impact.

Student Scholarship 2020
Our student scholarship programme looked a little different in 2020 due to the pandemic, however the Foundation was still committed to providing support to our scholars. Our scholars were selected in February 2020. While unfortunately we had to postpone their placements due to the restrictions in place over the summer, we were able to provide them with £1200 bursary to help encourage and support them during a particularly challenging time of their studies.
The Royal Academy of Engineers (RAE) GEEP programme
We have been supporting RAE to deliver their award-winning GEEP programme, an initiative that is designed to remove the socio-economic barriers blocking students' progress into a career in engineering. Our sponsorship helps the RAE offer their range of events, work experience placements, one to one mentoring and networking opportunities that improve employability. During 2020-21, the RAE put together a series of online resources to offer continuing support to students.

Encouraged further ➜ discussion and action amongst colleagues to address issues raised At the Foundation we work to encourage education, discussion and debate; bringing together professionals in our industry to find solutions to some of the most challenging issues that impact our world. We work alongside other experts in the sector to share knowledge and experience, to promote how engineers can change the path of the built environment for the benefit of all.
City Conversations
2020 into 2021 saw a number of key events across the world cancelled due to COVID 19 restrictions. Keen to still bring debate and thought leadership to those working in our industry, we worked with ingenuity to reimagine our City Conversation series to bring it online. The online Conversations featured panellists from across the globe as well as reaching audiences that would previously have not been able to access the live events in London.
At the time of publication, seven City Conversations had taken place on a diverse range of subjects, with an average of 100 audience members joining us online for each event. We covered topics including the design of low carbon housing, how the way we work has changed and how we can relook at city design to balance gender inequality.
The events have played an integral role in encouraging debate around key issues in the build environment. The events have also enabled engineers to connect after the events to continue the discussion and plan further action.
