community around the area of the church building and across the city
of Bristol and beyond. This is done in a variety of ways. Ivy Church
seeks to provide opportunities for members of the community to find
strength and wisdom for life, and hope for eternity through the Gospel.
Activities include: Worship, prayer, preaching, teaching, fellowship,
evangelism, small groups, community action, study groups, missions
support, pastoral care, children’s and youth activities, Sunday school,
Fellowship for the over 50s, global issues, Churches Together.
We have endeavoured toadvance the Christian Faithby regular
preaching and encouraging individual members to share their faith. We
have worked in combination with other local churches to promote the
Christian message in local outdoor venues.
The release and development of spiritual gifts is another positive sign
and we want to provoke more of the same. Roles in church life are
intended to be flexible so that we give opportunity for each individual to
develop and use their talents for God in an appropriate way.
Opportunity for regular worship is provided as a means of honouring
God and experiencing his grace in our lives.
It has been encouraging to see the development of prayer, both in
numerical support, but also in spiritual tone. Prayer has been of specific
benefit to those members of the community who come to pray and to
the wider community for whom prayer is offered. All of our efforts are in
vain unless God works with us and for us. We need to spend time in
communion with Him, speaking, and listening.

Our teaching seeks to enable members of the community to relate the Christian faith to life situations. We have also worked in partnership with local schools. Work done on Ivy Church Building has been to enable the building to be accessible and safe for members of the community as well as being attractive and functional so that the Christian message might be presented to local people and visitors. This has restricted the activities of the church. This year has, at the same time, provided new opportunities. This report is intended to show how: 1. We have been fulfilling our purposes, as summarised in the “Objects” and 2. That we are of great benefit to the public. ## **Introduction** Central to Ivy Church’s work is the belief that the Christian faith is a life-changing experience, brought about by repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, as a living person, _“God manifest in the flesh.” (1Tim 3.16)._ Our aim, as church and a charity is to bring invaluable benefit to people of all ages, ethnicity and background. Our commitment is to the whole person - spiritual, mental and physical health and wellbeing. A society is changed by each individual being transformed by God’s grace. To this end, the bedrock of our teaching is the bible, which is the basis for our teaching, study, prayer, worship and fellowship. Support is also given to those other organisations who have the same aims as ourselves, both locally in the city of Bristol and as far afield as the West Indies, Africa, Brazil and Peru. ## **The year 2020-21** 2020 has been an unusual year, dominated by the coronavirus pandemic. This has also enabled us to ‘interact’ with those unable to attend the services, not simply to offer them a ‘presentation.’ We have also been able to receive messages from our global partners (‘missionaries’) from various parts of the world. We have majored on communication, using social media, email, personal contact where possible, and the trusty telephone. These have enabled us to reach out to many, providing encouragement and help where possible. Our use of YouTube has enabled us to present the Christian message of faith, hope and love far and wide. Worship, teaching, prayer, fellowship and holy communion have continued in various formats and the contributions of church members have been inspiring. We are grateful to those volunteers who faithfully maintain the website, lead LiFE groups, contact the elderly, answer the church phone, send out messages, maintain the building, facilitate missions support, handle the finances, produce risk assessments and vital documents, monitor safeguarding, plan and prepare, lead musical worship, and are handling the growing demands of technology! It all adds up to a host of tasks that keep church happening. Looking ahead: The challenge and opportunity is to be outward-focused, mission-centred. Many people in our community will be optimistic, as lockdown lifts and freedom is more available. But, also, many will be finding themselves in challenging circumstances. We need to be creative and compassionate as we seek to respond to the need around us with practical help, the message of hope, relying on God’s help in our endeavours. ## **LiFE Groups,** sometimes called home groups, care groups, cell groups... - They are so valuable! They are places to develop friendship, support, encouragement; an opportunity to pray together, learn together, and develop our relationship with God. The restrictions this year have provided us with the opportunity to explore meeting in a different way. At first, it seemed that using technology only served to increase the distance between us, but we soon learned that zoom could be a valuable means of keeping in touch “face-to-face.” It might well be, that zoom continues to be used for some of these small group meetings. There will be no need for travelling, childminders, and many of the complications that can cause a challenge to meeting. But of course, the chance to be in one another’s company, when possible, offers a sense of warmth and human interaction, which is hard to replicate via technology. So in the future, we can have a mixture of all possibilities. And in addition, regular contact through phone, text, WhatsApp etc. are all immensely helpful. The North Bristol group has experienced the challenges of lockdown and the joys of family growth, seeking to encourage each other through conversations and a little prayer. ## Fishponds LiFE Group 2020 was a hard year for many of us, with but we are thankful to God for the way he has kept us. Because of the lock down we haven't met as a home group until November, it has been really good to reconnect and we are happy that Fay and Mrs Glasgow are able to join us which at first wasn't possible because of meeting over Zoom but thank God for family who have been brilliant at getting them connected. It is also lovely to have our brother Duncan join us. We have recently started studying 'What we can learn from Acts': This has been an interesting study, we are looking to God to use us in the realms of Spiritual Gifts that He has said are ours if we would earnestly seek Him, also about evangelism, we can all evangelise and share our story with others. After such a challenging year I am sure I speak for the group when I say we don't want to stand still we want to see Jesus lifted high. God has called us and we need to come with clean and pure hearts and allow Him to work in and through us to challenge us. ## Clare ## South Bristol LiFE Group We thank God for yet another year. The Lord has been faithful to us all Our home group is still up and running despite the Covid-19 pressure upon every family. We are currently studying the book of Acts 1-12 and alternating it with Prayer and Praise. Everybody appeared to be enjoying it. Challenges- Yes we are faced with challenges of isolation, ill-health and work related issues preventing some from attending the meeting in which we are optimistic that the Lord will calm the storm in less than no time. We welcome as many that have no where to fellowship at the moment to join us and be blessed of the Lord. God bless you all Sam and H ## Worship group Our Ivy worship group has been restricted in meeting for the whole year. For the first section of the pandemic lockdown the church had to bear patiently with me singing on Zoom from home and exhorting the congregation to sing up in their own homes! Thankfully we are past that stage now and a small group of us can worship at church and still be part of the Zoom service. Dave and Phil join me in singing, while Eugene supports with bass guitar- making a much fuller sound. We look forward eagerly to welcoming more members of the congregation back into the service and also for the day when it is safe for us all to sing together again- I can't wait! Throughout all these ups and downs the Lord has supported us and there have been some wonderful times when it all comes together and I forget all about the technology. Shirley B is still going strong and is impatient to resume her groups again as soon as possible! ## Apsley House This group has really thrived on Zoom, meeting each fortnight. Steve and Jane coordinate it from the Ivy end and an Apsley member rounds up their members and chooses two Bible readings each meeting. During the meeting we have prayers round the circle, and Steve and I are often moved by the members concern for others. It has also been amazing how the Bible readings, often chosen apparently at random, relate to each other and create a theme for the discussion. We feel the Holy Spirit has really been in this meeting and that the relationships built up have been a support to the members during lockdown. Praise the Lord, who sees all of us with our different needs and abilities as equals and loves us all the same. ## Jane ## **Youth Report for Ivy Church AGM 2021** **Commented [1]:** also contact with Fairlawn School established and Christmas assemblies and teaching carried out. This report will give an outline of the youth and children’s activities that happened between January 2020 and December 2020. *Covid played a major role in what we were able and not able to do as a youth team during this period, so one off events, summer trips etc were not possible.* **Spencer Pearce’s hours and responsibilities were changed during the month of April 2020 onward. His hours were reduced by half and the responsibility of outreach was removed from his job description.** ## **Current Youth Activities** - **i. Sunday School.** _***** Aim for this year is to encourage the young people to be part of the Sunday service in a way that develops their faith, skills and experience. This will include being part of the worship team, projector and sound operation, notices and prayer segments etc.*_ Ivy Church is a registered Charity, Number 1050613; a member of the Evangelical Alliance; Assemblies of God (UK) and Churches Together. ## 21 of 37 I have included the overall aim for Sunday School above, but for the majority of the year (as we were meeting via Zoom) it wasn’t possible to involve the young people in the service and deliver the lessons in the way we normally plan. However, this has led to the young people being involved in different ways, prayer segments, bible readings etc. via Zoom. (Services via Zoom) Currently the lessons are given by a teacher during the service (primarily pastor Shirley Watkins) which normally include a bible story and then a craft for the children to complete while the rest of the service is taking place. At the end of the service the young people are spotlighted so they can share with the congregation what they have learnt and made. ## **Future Plans** - To encourage more of the Sunday School team to lead these Zoom Sunday lessons. - To transition to deliver lessons from the church building. - To train members of the youth team to use the media at the church and Zoom features. - **ii. Youth Clubs. *** _Aim for this year is to have regular connection with our young people via Zoom, as Covid has meant we have lost the ability to meet in person. During these meetings the aim is to encourage the young people to stay connected with their peers, whilst creating a positive space they feel ownership of to grow and develop in their faith._ Since May 2020 we started a weekly Zoom meeting for the Ivy young people to stay connected with each other and to grow their faith. Which we felt was so important after going into lockdown as it was isolating for many of us. As the year went on, we decided to create two youth groups, Golden Swords and Prism. Golden Swords is for 4–10-year-olds and Prism is 10+. We felt that we needed to separate the young people to better meet their needs. I will give an example of a basic outline for both these meetings; Welcome: What have you learnt this week? (This question will change each week) Game: Spot the difference, bird identification quiz etc (really depends on the group and what we have been discussing recently.) Activity: Think of someone you look up to? Why do they inspire you? (I try and start with something individual to bring back to a group point regarding a biblical principle) Ivy Church is a registered Charity, Number 1050613; a member of the Evangelical Alliance; Assemblies of God (UK) and Churches Together. ## 22 of 37 Lesson: Jesus is someone we can look up to because he inspired those around him by… (These lessons are either taken from a bible story or principle, really depends on the flow of the meeting) ## **Future Plans** - To continue to meet even after the lockdown restrictions ease. - To look at ways we can bring in young people from outside our church groups. - To use social media (YouTube and Facebook for example) to have online resources young people can access at any time. - **iii. Crea8 Arts Project.** _This was a collaborative project with Parkway Methodist, St Agnes and the Ark-Bus project to deliver a month-long arts trail, a 3 day drop in arts activity and an online advent programme._ **The summer arts trail** operated in the month of July 2020 and highlighted over 20 spots in the St. Pauls and St.Werburghs areas of projects serving the community. Including places of worships, youth centres, community centres, parks etc. The aim was to spread a message of hope to our communities and lead them to places and projects they could get involved in. **The 3-day art drop in (July 22-24)** was held in the car park of Parkway Methodist and invited people passing by to be involved in recreating the mural on the side of the church. We had different stations setup where people of all ages (primarily aimed at children) could create a piece of artwork that would be part of the new mural on the wall. **The online advent programme** worked with the churches to create online resources whereby families and young people could open a virtual advent calendar door each day of advent. Behind each online door was a picture and story of a biblical character or theme that told the story of Jesus’s lineage and then of his birth. ## **Future Plans** - To continue to meet with the local churches and look at ways in which we can serve our communities together. ## **Aims for 2021** Ivy Church is a registered Charity, Number 1050613; a member of the Evangelical Alliance; Assemblies of God (UK) and Churches Together. ## 23 of 37 - To encourage members of the youth and children’s team to start engaging with the young people again. This will help with re-establish relationships for when Sunday School is able to happen again (perhaps later in the year). - To have young people trained on the new media equipment at Ivy church. Not only will this help add numbers to the media team but will encourage the young people to feel they can contribute to a church service in a different way. - To continue to work with our local church partners in projects we feel will benefit our communities. ## **Safeguarding and child protection** ## **Safeguarding co-ordinator – Hilary Cooling** ## **Deputy safeguarding co-ordinators for children and young people – Janet Ashmeade and for adults with care and support needs (vulnerable adults) – Esther Olawuyi** On-line safety has loomed large this past year of course, with a focus on how zoom meetings are conducted safely to protect all participants, and also offering info to parents and carers about on-line safety of children and young people when they are on-line or using social media at home. Not forgetting the challenge of being alert to concerns about abuse of children or vulnerable adults during lockdown, when it is easier to hide. Ivy church policies aim to conform to the Ten Safeguarding Standards from Thirtyone-eight (formerly CCPAS), see: ## - https://thirtyoneeight.org/our services/ The Charity Commission requires charities to have safeguarding measures in place, and the trustees are accountable to ensure their implementation. All trustees must have an up to date DBS check for children and vulnerable adults. Within Ivy Church Hilary Cooling and Sandra Holmes are responsible for getting these checks done. ## Property Much work has been done to keep the building tidy and covid-safe, and the challenge will be to prepare for a return to ‘normal’ church services. the usual maintenance activities have been effective, with checks on electrical, security and fire safety systems. AGM report** - Despite a very difficult year for us all giving has been well maintained during the past year being just over 4% down on 2019 but higher than 2018. - £20000 was transferred from savings to current account near the beginning of the pandemic as a precautionary move. - Thank you to all those who have switched to regular online or standing order giving. This transition has been remarkable and has been fundamental to maintaining our financial strength. - Ivy Church (it’s people!) are very generous. - Gift Aid income for the year was £11684 - Our total cash assets are still very healthy. However, the pandemic still poses risks to our income as it changes folks’ circumstances as well as other circumstances changing for other individuals. - Costs for gas, electricity, water reduced due to not using building. - Bank charges also reduced as limited cash deposits as this is the main admin charge from bank. - Youth expenditure also much reduced due to pandemic. - Cleaning costs rose to meet Covid safety requirements. During January and February, the activities at Ivy were relatively ‘normal’. The missions team was able to support Pastor Phil financially on his visit to Victoria and Simon in Tanzania in March and his ministry when there. Thankfully he was able to return home before the lockdown in relation to coronavirus. We also started to regularly support Tom and Olive Kisaki in Japan and Creative Solutions in Kenya. From March 2020 all visits from our missionary partners were cancelled. Geoff and Sue Smith were in England but unable to visit and Claire Kinkead had to cancel her visit. However, with technology, we have been able to enjoy video links with Geoff and Sue Smith, Claire Kinkead, Simon and Victoria Ewing, Ginny and Carol, Sara and Sasha Vitakic, John and Liz Medcraft and Tom and Olive Kisaki, which is much more than we would have enjoyed in a usual year, so we do praise God for this. Our missionaries have been challenged in different ways as coronavirus has spread across countries and various restrictions / lockdowns have been put in place for them, but we have not ceased to be amazed at how God has led each one in new creative ways of spreading God’s word and showing His love in practical ways, including various feeding programmes and providing equipment to enable children to continue with their studies. However, this does come at extra financial costs and other difficulties. We plan to continue to ask each missionary to send regular videos so we are kept up to date with the work they are involved in and any immediate needs or new projects / activities. We have also given financial gifts to the Street Pastors in Bristol and Pastor Jacob in India. ## **Looking Ahead** We continually thank God for the generous giving at Ivy Church which enables us to support our missionary partners. We are reviewing the amounts of monies we give regularly and plan to give an additional gift to each missionary as we are able. Please continue to pray for our missionaries and for us as a missions team to continue to make the right spirit filled decisions at the most appropriate time to enable the Word of God to continue to be spread amongst the nations and for many more people to find Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. Pastor Phil read from John 15 v 1-8, about the vine and the branches, which starts with ‘I am’, not ‘we are’. It is what is in his mind, and his mission. With Jesus being the vine, and our father the gardener, we can stay inter-connected with those who belong with one another, and to ‘abide in the vine’. We need to be fruitful, if not, radical action is necessary and therefore a bit of pruning required! We need to be connected to Jesus in prayer and the ministry of his word. ATTENDANCE: There were 33 persons present. APOLOGIES FOR NON-ATTENDANCE: Ahmet Mustafa, Grace Bailey, Christine Maslin and Viola Glasgow. Pastor then referred to the previous minutes from 21/5/2019, which had previously been sent out to the church members with the various reports. These were unanimously accepted by the members. Pastor Phil outlined the purpose of the AGM, and reminded the members of the objects of the church as a charity. He explained that the Church Leadership agreed that we should use the Zoom platform this year, so as not to drift in dates. The AGM therefore covers 19/20, and slightly spills into 20/21 also. In time, it is hoped that we can start safely using our building again, and PW has invited comments under a separate email to that effect. ## REPORTS: ## YOUTH - SP reported on behalf of the youth work, and confirmed that the main focus over the past year was to have a main event every 3 months. It was hoped for a further event in July/August. He advised that Sunday School was an ever-evolving situation, and that the young people have been encouraged to be more actively involved in meetings in the form of prayers, the band and communion. He explained that they were responsible for their own learning and were choosing their own themes. At the moment during the lockdown, they are having their own Zoom meetings to stay connected. SP advised that there had been a change in expectation of his role within Ivy Church. Due to personal issues, the last year had been challenging, and due to difficulties in the location of our community, the ‘community ’aspect of his role has now ceased. He will now only be working for Ivy for the equivalent of one day a week (8hrs), in whatever that shape may take for the youth work. SP received support from the attendees encouraging his ministry. The question was asked if there were any plans as to how this gap would now be plugged…. ## PRIME TIME – DF reported that they enjoyed their time in PT, and had been blessed by their visitors. Thoughts are now turning to the longer term. DF & JF have been keeping in touch with the Prime Timers during this lockdown period, keeping them in the loop. ## PROPERTY – **TAR** **April 2011** 33 VH outlined the projects mentioned in his report including work on the manse, and advised that there were future projects to bear in mind, as and when these can be carried out. ## WORSHIP – JN was thanked for supplying our music during the Sunday morning Zoom meetings. She is looking forward to the day when we can all sing and play together again! ## LIFE GROUPS – Members were invited to think about how this might work on Zoom. Prayers meetings are able to continue on Zoom. ## MISSIONARY WORK – CA, JR & PP oversee. CA thanked Ivy for their giving to enable us to spread love. They are currently looking at Asia having ‘worked around the world ’to help wherever needed. They are currently moving to internet banking to assist with the reporting of funds. Missionaries are currently able to join us to report on our Zoom meetings. ## FINANCE – DC reported that last year was fairly uneventful in how we managed our finances. Summary from the monthly analysis: - £11,516 Gift Aid January and April - July manse repairs, £4800 - Income better than expenditure last year. Income over expenditure £8596 - Income increased by 7.6% over 2018 - Increase in regular giving following last year’s presentation - Expenditure decreased by 11.9% - Cash assets £124,724 - Strong position to weather the current crisis DC thanked Ivy for the positive response to the current situation by people changing how they give, and setting up new methods of paying. DC advised that early in the lockdown period, consideration had to be given to having funds in the correct account to enable cash to be available if necessary. Movements of funds were made accordingly to ensure that we were in a secure position. He reported that the change in income was quite small, and that there was no actual impact in income since lockdown. **TAR** **April 2011** 34 SW thanked Dave for all the work that has been involved in collating the finances. The membership formally accepted the accounts. This was proposed by JR and seconded by S Pirkis. PW thanked DC for all of his work with the crisis management, finances and organisation. He then thanked all part of the vine (branches and leaves). ## TRUSTEE APPOINTMENTS – Monday was up for re-election. Pastor asked for a ‘thumbs up ’to re-elect him, and the verdict was unanimous. ## ADMIN – Thanks were given to RL and SC in supporting with admin in the various aspects, especially early in lockdown.
