REPORT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30[TH] JANUARY 2022

Indigenous People’s Cultural Support Trust (IPCST) was established as a charity to support the culture and maintain the independence of indigenous people, particularly in Brazil. The main purpose of the Trust is to provide logistical and financial support for projects initiated in co-operation with indigenous communities. IPCST is also active in providing information and promoting public awareness about matters which directly affect indigenous peoples, and in disseminating public information about the vitality and strength of indigenous cultures.

The projects which IPCST supports fall into the following broad areas: income generation and support for community-based commercial activities; health and welfare; education; land security; strengthening cultural confidence; appropriate technology; communications; and protection of indigenous knowledge. In the area of public information, IPCST makes use of exhibitions, concerts, videos, talks, seminars and articles in the media to bring information to the public, with a particular emphasis on schools, colleges and universities.

In the furtherance of its objectives IPCST is happy to work with local counterpart nongovernmental organizations in Brazil, particularly indigenous communities’ own organisations, and with universities, companies and certification authorities to establish well-founded co-operative projects.

The daily running of IPCST continues to be carried out by the trustees on a voluntary, unpaid basis. IPCST employs no staff and has no dedicated premises.

IPCST’s funding comes from a variety of sources, some of which are directed to specific projects. In the year ended 30[th] January 2022, funding was received from small donations, from concerts and fund-raising activities such as car boot sales, and from grants from other UK registered charities. We would particularly like to send our most sincere thanks to Rainforest Concern for their generous ongoing support. We have a Just Giving account and a small number of regular payroll donors. Two of the trustees, Sue and Patrick Cunningham, have arranged for the royalties from their book ‘Spirit of

the Amazon’ to be paid direct to the charity. Emily continues to raise funds from her music, especially through concerts.

Our public information activities this year were constrained by the Covid-19 pandemic, but we have given a few talks to schools. Tribes Alive, our public face, continues to provide information through our website and our Facebook page.

Sue, Patrick and Emily attended ‘COP 26’, the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention, in Glasgow in November. We prepared a 9-minute video (in both English and Portuguese) of indigenous people, to allow them to put their messages direct to the public and attendees at the event. We provided muchneeded help to indigenous delegates from Brazil, with both logistical and financial support. Emily put on a well-attended concert and talk in the Green Zone, where Sue and Patrick also spoke.

It has not been possible for any of the trustees to visit Brazil during this year, mainly because of Covid restrictions. However we have continued to provide support to indigenous communities as they recover from the impact of the pandemic. We have also supported an indigenous fire brigade, which the Kuikuro people created in response to an increasingly dangerous environment where adjoining landowners set fire to the land adjoining their reserve. These fires have been allowed to spread into the indigenous territories, and on several occasions villages have only been saved from conflagration by the brave work of these volunteer indigenous firemen. We also provide support for indigenous videographers to help them to use their own voices for advocacy of the indigenous cause in Brazil.

In terms of its organisation, IPCST is unchanged, continuing to rely on the voluntary work of its trustees for its executive functions. We believe that keeping our organisation small helps us to ensure that we support indigenous people’s own initiatives, instead of imposing projects on them which may be less appropriate.

During the coming year we will continue to pursue existing projects and develop new ones. Plans for a medicinal plant nursery, where species known by indigenous pajés to be medicinal which are now difficult to find in the wild will be planted and propagated to provide traditional medicines, are well advanced.

The accounts submitted to the Charity Commission comply with current statutory requirements and with the requirements of the charity’s governing document.
