## **Covid 19** 

The Covid 19 pandemic had a significant effect on the charity in this financial year. As a non-essential business the shop had to close, and the trustees took the decision to take advantage of the government furlough scheme; both paid staff were placed on furlough and monies claimed from HMRC. 

There was a positive impact of Covid and this was twofold. Firstly, in order to make space for socially distanced workstations in the warehouse, an entire row of steel racking was removed and sold - a third of our storage racks. This created a huge amount of working space in the warehouse and forced a ruthless clear-out of slow moving stock. 

The second positive effect of Covid was that it accelerated our plans to create a more attractive and inviting entrance to the shop. In order to establish a one-way system with separate entrance and exit, we invested in a new glazed doorway in the unit’s roller door. This has transformed the shop by introducing natural light, and helps new customers to see where we are - especially with our new colourful sign. 

In September 2020, our patron Bishop Graham Usher, visited us to formally reopen the shop after our Covid-enforced closure. 

## **Trustees** 

During 2020/1 we experienced some changes to our body of trustees. Simon and Jane Court moved to Nottingham and ceased to act as trustees. We also formally welcomed Stephen Jefford and Sophie Fox as new trustees. At the end of the reporting period the trustees were: Andrew Whitehead (chair), Stephen Jefford, Kandi Kammoun & Sophie Fox. 

## **Volunteers** 

2020/21 was a time of growth in our number of volunteers. We closed the reporting period with 20 active volunteers. Some of these do their work in the warehouse unit at socially distanced workstations, and others work from home. 

## **Finances** 

The Accounts attached show that the charity made a significant surplus in the year. We received furlough grants from HMRC when we were forced to close (£7,196), and we also received two other grants totalling (£34,815). These have certainly helped us to weather the pandemic in a healthy financial position. 

## **Summary** 

As for all other businesses and organisations around the world, 2020/1 was an extraordinary year. The pandemic presented unique challenges, but Scrapbox rose to these challenges and embraced the opportunities which were also present. The year must surely be regarded as anomalous, but nonetheless the charity ends the year in a stronger financial position than at the start.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31/03/2021 

**Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). 

I report in respect of my examination of  the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. 

**Independent** I have completed my examination.  I confirm that no material matters have **examiner's statement** come to my attention in connection with the examination (other than that disclosed below *) which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect: 

- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or 

- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or 

- • the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
