## **Trustees Annual Report** 


One thing about a lot of 'Christian ministries' is that they over-egg it. The normal, the expected, becomes the extra-ordinary. The small thing, the mustard seed, the fresh shoot, the strange turn, the new birth..... becomes the come and gawp moment. We have not, and we will not shine any bright lights, push onto any stage anyone or anything that God has touched or His spirit has moved. _'Don't tell anyone about this. Return to your home; go back to you own. Hold these things in your heart'_ . We don't know exactly how to speak of what God is doing around us, sometimes we feel inspite and not because of us.  We have no right to claim... anything really.  Only that we have watched from as near within as we can - lived amongst as honestly as we can - in the hope that we can do some right things, sing the right song or in sadness or joy, speak at the right time. 

By which we mean to say: we have hoped and we do now believe that we may see, by the grace and mercy of God, some of the things we have believed we should work for/at.  Its not that we've never seen these things before; we have.  But we haven't seen enough to believe a significant change will come (to borrow a phrase to Jezza not Jesus) _'for the many not the few'_ . Over the last year or so though, after the devastation of Covid, we have seen those things we have been dreaming about, planning for, puzzling over... maybe coming around and together. 

We won't shine a bright light on the individuals. If you want to hear the monthly more personal stories, to receive the prayer requests, and to respond in intercession for us, then make sure you receive our monthly prayer letter via the office.  But I think we can say: that the gift of St Matthew's Parish Hall and the Scouts groups/Cubs; the gift of the use of the ex-Vicarage - now Matt's House and our relations with CMS; the huge investment to make new use of St Matthew's Church by a local housing charity; the growth to come in Sycamore Gardening; our relationship with the local schools and their management group; the rightness of our relationship with Urban Expression....  we can say that the potential is massive.  We can also say that the human resources are few and under great pressure, and we need your prayers!!  And we need more hands to the harvest.  But most importantly, we can say that we have seen the kingdom coming in some lives and that it feels like that's going to multiply. 

Annual Reports are meant to look back. Sorry about that.  But one could say that all this, that feels ready to break out has been coming together in the last year or so. Since we could really work again after Covid time and during which a new set of possibilities have come into a place of fruition. Again, please open your heart for us and pray. And thank you.

**How have people benefitted from Hull YFC activities?** 


_“A highlight has been getting everybody back to how it should be after Covid. Seeing all the bairns again not having to isolate was the best bit. What I most like is it is part of the community, volunteers are more like family than friends - you can always go to anybody if you need help. The kids can come for help too. They feel safe. What I get out of it is seeing the kids from an early age going on to secondary school. Literally I’m part of the family.”_ 

_“My kids wont eat breakfast at home. That’s why they come here. If they come they eat breakfast. Otherwise they are empty. I think about children being on an empty stomach and not just my own. I like the trips as its cheaper for me. I had to save months to do a day trip out on my own.”_ 

_“My daughter enjoys meeting other people and this helps us. The after school club with sports, games and colouring she likes it and I have time myself to go shopping so its good for us too. You’re doing a good job thank you!”_ 

_“Orts is a place of friendship, love and support - much needed in this world.“_ 

_“Without YFC there is not much to do round here. For me it helps because I’ve always wanted to do youth work. This way I get to experience After School club, Youth Club and its nice to be a part of the YFC family. Yesterday I was busy at Breakfast Club but no matter what’s going on there is someone around. There is always someone looking out for each other and that’s a big thing for me .”_ 

_“Seeing the kids happy, it helps the kids round here. It helps them major. They’re getting breakfast. People doing stuff together in community is what its about. Its nice. Not being at each others throats but doing it together.”_

_“I decided to work for Sycamore Gardening because I didn’t have a job. I had a few jobs before, but there's been difficulties in them with how they have been run and how they treated the staff._ 

_As soon as this job came up I knew I would enjoy it and learn some new skills and stuff in life. I think this also helps me out because we’re outside which is good for clearing my head. I like it because even if you’re upset or not in a good mood you can just get your head down and get on with stuff._ 

_I think SG will help me become a better person and show off my good side and bring the best out of me._ 

_“Youth Club is something to do. I enjoy cooking and the new people too. No one really dislikes anyone, everyone’s kind – friendly except for the odd thing. Even the camp weekend we went on that was good. No one bullied people which is what I’ve had pretty much  all my life. To go somewhere new and have no one judge me on the way I look or the way I am or the way I act was something so new to me – it was shocking that there are people that nice.”_ 

_“I like Breakfast Club because I get to colour and I even get to see my friends.”_

Our total funds carried forward include 6 months operational costs and funds set aside for new HYFC staff. Sycamore expansion money is also included in funds carried forward..

## **Finance Report** 


Following two years of reduced activity due to Covid, 2022 was very much a year of bouncing back to normal. This has meant our expenditure has returned to more expected levels. 

During the year, we received specific support from the Imagine Foundation towards the Orts project. In addition grants have also been received from the Holbeck Charitable Trust, the Hesslewood Children’s Trust, the Camelia Trust, the FP Finn Charitable Trust, the Charities Aid Foundation and the Joseph and Annie Cattle Trust towards our youth and family work. Our long running Breakfast Club and re-launched after school club were kindly supported by Howden Rotary and individuals linked to them. We also received the benefits of a divested community asset that we will use as a reserve in our first year of Parish Hall ownership in 2023. Our social enterprise – Sycamore Gardening continues to go from strength to strength and has been supported by a grant from the Scurrah Wainwright Charity. Encouragingly through the gardening team’s hard work it is now approaching the point of being self financing and exploring expansion. 



Special thanks to Greggs the Bakers, Cranswick Foods, the Bio-D and churches in Hull and  East Yorkshire who gave supplies for Breakfast Club. 

Salaries continue to be our biggest expense and we saw increases in insurances and administrative costs . 

Overall our income was higher than budgeted due to the divested fund whilst our expenditure was slightly lower overall meaning we had a manageable deficit covered by our free reserves. 

Despite the challenging economic climate we have confidence in God’s promise to provide for all our needs going forward and a revised approach to our fundraising.  However the foundation of our finances and work are through the sacrificial and loyal giving from both our supporters and local churches - the Hull YFC family behind the scenes enabling us. We know that times are difficult for all right now and so all the support is greatly appreciated.
