The committee confirm that the annual report and accounts for the charity comply with the current statutory requirements, the requirements of the charity’s governing document and the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities. It is an unincorporated association governed by a constitution, which has been amended from time to time. Its assets rest in the Trustees, who ensure that a committee of elected and ex officio officers carries out the management of the Society. ## **The Trustees** The Society’s Trustees, under charity legislation, are the elected members of the committee and ex officio chair. They represent interests of the members and have the skills necessary to accept responsibility for the maintenance of the Society’s assets and for the oversight of others, members and non-members, who voluntarily assist the society. Ex officio appointments are made by the committee, all other committee members are elected by members at the Annual General Meeting. It is anticipated that the committee should have the skills necessary to manage the affairs of the Society for the benefit or the musical education of its members and of the wider population around Southampton and Hampshire. 2 **SOUTHAMPTON PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY** ## **TRUSTEES' ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE PERIOD ENDED 31 JULY 2023** ## **Current Committee** Kate Greaves (Chair) Kathryn Kemish John Newell (Vice Chair) Julia Maltby Deborah Mitchell (Secretary) Margaret Moules Michael Kelly (Treasurer) Allan Pollock Jon Blaine Anne Rogers Claire Heslop Susan Stephenson Katharine Ingram The Musical Director of the Society, David Gibson, and the Deputy Conductor/Rehearsal Accompanist, Paul Spanton, are ex-officio members of the committee, but are not Trustees. ## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** The objectives of the Society as set out in its constitution are to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by the presentation of public concerts and recitals and by such other ways as the Society through its committee shall determine from time to time. ## **Activities in the year to 31 July 2023** The Choir resumed rehearsals and performances in September 2021, taking care to observe the procedures made necessary by the continuing difficulties caused by Covid-19. The Choir held three concerts during the year. In December 2022, we performed Handel's Messiah with the Hanover Band, in the O2 Guild Hall, Southampton. In March 2023, we performed Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem and Goodall's Eternal Light in the O2 Guildhall with the Docklands Sinfonia. In June 2023, we performed Mozart's Requiem with the Hanover Band, in St John's, Smith Square, London. We also held one workshop in preparation for singing without scores. 3 **SOUTHAMPTON PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY** **TRUSTEES' ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE PERIOD ENDED 31 JULY 2023** ## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE** In the aftermath of the pandemic rehearsals continued to be carefully managed so that no choir members would consider themselves at an unacceptable risk of exposure to coronavirus. A majority of members returned to the choir, a total of 135, though not all sang in the concerts. The first two concerts were performed by the full choir, who sang on appropriately spaced platforms. The third concert was performed by 100 singers, because of reduced space on stage. The audience attendances were still lower than in earlier years. The choir's finances were subject to continuing uncertainty as post-pandemic recovery proved slow, and the costs of performing significantly exceeded the income. The third concert involved reduced costs, since we were performing by invitation of the Hanover Band.
