## **Structure, governance and management**

## **Description of the charity’s trusts**

Type of governing document: Constitution: Adopted 31/08/1995

As amended on 16/08/2010 As amended on 06/01/2014 As amended on 25/03/2015 As amended 07/2017

How the charity is constituted: Unincorporated Association

Trustee selection methods: The charity has three committees to carry out its objectives. They are The Marple Band Committee, Hawk Green Band Committee and the Central Committee. Each band organisation appoints a trustee. A third trustee is elected at the AGM.

## **Additional governance information**

Each of the committees manages its own affairs and finances. The Central Committee as a whole manages the bandroom and performs administrative functions, the costs of which are shared by the agent organisations.

## **Objectives and activities**

## **Summary of Objectives**

Our charity objectives are:

TO PROMOTE AND FOSTER THE ENJOYMENT AND UNDERSTANDING OF BRASS BAND MUSIC FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC AND IN SUPPORT OF OTHER LOCAL CHARITIES.

We achieve this through the management of two brass bands which, between them, entertain and inform the public and provide a musical experience for people of all ages, incomes and levels of competence. We also manage a bandroom for the use of the bands. The charity provides instruments, music, uniforms, conductors and rehearsal facilities. The bands strive for musical excellence and enjoyment, and support the local community.

## **Summary of Activities**

In planning our activities for the year, we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit, so our activities fall into 5 broad groupings.

1. Providing a musical experience for audiences by performing in public and private concerts. We also use these performances to raise some of the money we need to fund the charity

2. Providing a musical experience for players through regular rehearsals ,directed by an experienced conductor ,using suitable music, and by providing instruments on loan where necessary

3. Striving for excellence though contests

4. Supporting other charities by playing at their events

5. Providing and managing storage space and soundproof rehearsal facilities

## **Achievements and Performance**

## **Achievements of The Central Committee**

At the start of this reporting year, neither band was using the bandroom for rehearsal owing to COVID-19 restrictions.

Hawk Green Band returned after Christmas.

Marple Band continued to rehearse elsewhere for the entire year.

The committee maintained and ran the bandroom for use by the bands.

The following works were carried out on the bandroom:

- Repairs to roof and chimney

- Replacement of some internal light fittings

- Replacement of rotting wood in window frames etc

- Repairs to various door handles and locks

- Removal of the fittings from the Gents toilet ready for conversion to extra storage space

## Some charity-wide policies were rewritten.

The 200 club continued to operate. The number of shares is dropping.

There were no concerts this year.

## **It was agreed that the bands would contribute to the Memorial Park Centenary celebrations by performing in the park in late July.**

## **Achievements of Hawk Green Band**

At the start of this reporting year, Hawk Green Band were still only able to do virtual rehearsals due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 restrictions gradually eased in the UK and it became safer for inperson rehearsals, concerts and contests to start again.

## _**Rehearsals**_

- This reporting year started off with weekly virtual rehearsals on Zoom.

- The first in-person rehearsal was on 20th May 2021 at Marple Cricket Club. The band rehearsed once a week.

- From the 20th July 2021, rehearsals moved to Arden Dies.

- At the end of September 2021, the band were back to rehearsing twice a week.

- In January 2022, rehearsals moved back to TBBOM band room.

**Achievements of The Marple Band**

## **Rehearsals**

Another challenging start to the year for the band. At the start of the year the band were doing on line rehearsals via Zoom. Once, the band were allowed to meet up and Covid restrictions were eased( September 2021) the rehearsals have been taking place at Arden Dies, Shepley Street, Marple. Many players were unhappy going back to a cramped and poorly ventilated band room and the new venue was a lot safer for players who were vulnerable. The band are staying there for the foreseeable future.

Rehearsal nights have changed since Xmas to Tuesday and Friday evenings.

## **Financial Review**

## **Reserves policy**

The charity aims to keep sufficient finds in reserve to maintain its assets for a minimum period of one year. Such costs cover insurance, rates and utilities. The reserved sum is held in equal parts by the committees.

## **Funds materially in deficit**

There are no funds in deficit.

## **Summary of Accounts**

Individual accounts are produced by the three committees and individually approved by their members at the AGM, or in some other way.

They are combined into a single report at the end of each year.

Since each set of accounts uses a unique format, combining them is a challenge and can result in minor differences between the combined accounts and the individual approved versions.

See Appendix.
