An Introduction to NK Theatre Arts

NK Theatre Arts has evolved from small beginnings as an After-School organisation in 1988 with around 30 children to its status as one of Stockport and Greater Manchester is leading all-inclusive Theatre Company for children, young people and adults with an annual membership of around 200. Previously known as Northern Kids Theatre Company, which became a Registered Charity in 1995, (Charity Number 1049259) the name of the company was changed to ‘NK Theatre Arts’ in September 2001.

Objects.

The objects of the Charity are: -

  1. The advancement of education in Greater Manchester and surrounding areas, particularly in the field of drama, creative dance, movement, music and other charitable cultural activities for the benefit of all ages, including (but not limited to) those who require help with mobility, communication, behaviour or self-help skills or with social development with a view to educating them in such fields, integrating them into the company and assisting them in their development as full members of society.

  2. To maintain the establishment of a theatre and workshop premises and to maintain and manage the same (whether alone or in co-operation with any local authority or other person or body) in furtherance of these objects.

  3. To promote such other charitable objects as may from time to time be determined.

Artistic Vision

“To provide a base where individuals are not labelled, and all members are given the opportunity to grow and enjoy the concept of arts for all. To promote self-belief and dispel self-doubt, enabling people to be heard who might otherwise be overlooked. To provide a centre of excellence for the gifted and talented to develop and maximise their skills and abilities”

Current Position

The company has been based at The Forum Theatre in Stockport since May 2003, having signed a 30-year lease with Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council to bring the operation of our Charity to Stockport from Tameside. The base provides a versatile auditorium, studio areas, licensed bar, office space which serves us well, whilst we continue to operate the building on behalf of the council as a venue for community organisations within the borough and beyond. We also manage the community centre rooms on behalf of the Bredbury and Romiley Community Association.

We provide performing arts workshops over four days per week whilst other evenings are spent producing a varied programme of shows and events to serve the local community and schools to maximise the use of the building.

We also run a Theatre in Education outreach programme, which tackles, pertinent issue based presentations to children and young people across the region.

Like many other organisations, the company suffered majorly from the Covid-19 Pandemic, which affected our operations over the last few years and we are currently working hard to rebuild our business elements accordingly

Business Development Summary

Income and Expenditure Summary

The company accounts show a surplus for the year of £8,028. Our turnover increased to just over £500,000.

There were some remaining Covid grants that we were able to benefit from this year, (20%) but the vast majority of the income was a full return to our business operations.

Subs and Membership accounted for 12% of our income, internal events brought in 17% of income with theatre hire and hirer ticket income yielding 25% of our income. Bar and refreshment sales brought in another 20% of our income.

Membership and Workshops:

All of our classes returned this year and we worked with 163 members who took part in our weekly workshops in Musical Theatre, Drama and Dance. We were delighted that such a significant number returned to our sessions post Covid and our income from membership subscriptions was 12%

There was a reduction however in overall members compared to our final figures for our last complete year when we worked with 248 members, so we currently stand at 65% of where we would expect to be.

Forum Theatre

There were 31 external organisations who returned to the theatre to present their shows and events this year as we were able to return to in person theatre performances and events. There was also 28 separate internal performances undertaken by NK Theatre Arts.

We are looking forward to welcoming many new hirers to The Forum Theatre next year, particularly some one night individual performances by some well-known names such as Francis Rossi, Lulu and Dom Joly.

We will be welcoming a new production company who will be using The Forum for pantomime next year following the decision by JB Productions to no longer present a panto at The Forum.

All events will be sold via The Forum Theatre ticketsource pages which brings income directly to the company and producer payments passed on. This allows us to plan accordingly as we will know the numbers of attendees before each and every event.

Attendance Figures

The Forum Theatre was used for a total of 336 days this year, compared to 308 during our last full pre-lockdown year (2018/2019). There was a reduction in the amount of hirers using the Forum compared to pre lockdown figures (55 compared to 64), but there was an increase in internal event usage as we topped up shows and events at the theatre 65 compared to 38. We do expect this to level out in the coming year, with less internal and more external events.

The breakdown of attendances compared to our previous full year are as follows:
YE 2022 YE 2019
NK Workshops / Rehearsals 16,006
29,995
NK Performances 9,836
8,766
External Events 20,732
21,501
Total Visitors 46,574
60,262

Investment

Minor investment continued this year, including a new portable dance floor which can be used, a new popcorn machine for the bar, speakers for the foyer front of house system as well as some new technical equipment and investment in our costumes.

Grants & Donations

Grants and Donations brought in £92k for the company. There were some final Covid grants obtained this year, including tier 3 funding and final payments from the culture recovery fund. We received donations from the Vernon Building Society, funding from our small lottery and also claimed Gift Aid following the Covid break.

Outreach

We were delighted to be able to return our outreach programmes this year, with a comprehensive report included in this Annual Report. An SMBC library project, a project with Pure Innovations and our work with schools brought in over £7k for the company. We were delighted to receive support from CDL who have again funded our Internet Safety project in schools which will take place next year.

Social Media

We now have separate accounts for NK Theatre Arts and The Forum Theatre, which will allow us to promote separate elements of our business more appropriately. The Forum Theatre twitter and Facebook feeds will concentrate on the shows and events taking place at The Forum, both in house by NK but also by the many hirers, which use our facilities. It is hoped we can engage with the hirers in a better way with promotion much more targeted for certain shows and events.

We have over 7,000 followers on Facebook and 2,000 on Twitter.

There are also over 8,000 people on our dedicated mail lists now as we continue to regularly to promote our events.

Artistic Report

What a year this has been for NK; after almost 18 months of Lockdown, zoom classes, social distancing, Covid control restrictions, the challenges we faced artistically were many. On the one hand, venue closures and job losses significantly disrupted the cultural industries however we were blessed with excellent management from Darren Stannage who continually explored grants and funding avenues to keep us afloat enabling us to come back with a bang resulting in one of our busiest seasons ever.

News wise, we have acquired three new patrons this year, two rather unexpectedly, at a tribute night to Bobby Ball. We had invited his partner, Tommy Cannon to our Youth Musical Theatre Show, show to say a few words about Bobby, prior to a presentation of The new Bobby Ball Award when he announced to the audience that both he and his wife Hazel would become Patrons. The third Patron to join us is local lad, star of Emmerdale and King of The Jungle Danny Miller. (Danny was a member of NK when based in Tameside)

A Theatre Company such as NK relies upon the energy, enthusiasm and commitment of staff and volunteers, without whom, we would not be in the enviable position we are today. We have a Technical Team that rises to any challenge thrown at them, a Production Team, led by Dominic that gives us fantastic programmes, posters, props, and staging. Hannah, as Head of Dance and Musical Theatre, supported by Amy, still never ceases to amaze me. Her gift for teaching and her style of dance is infectious. She is meticulous in her choreography inspiring the very best in our members. Dawn, as Head of Drama Workshop and TIE is inspirational, not only to the young members in her charge but also to the team of tutors working under her guidance. Ably assisted by Maisie, both have nurtured and encouraged their young team to; confidently impart all that they have been taught to others. NK has always commended cascade training in the firm belief it encourages younger members to inspire to be like their mentors. So here we have an overview of the past 12 months. And I know even greater strides will be made in the exciting projects that lie ahead in the work of our fabulous company in the near future.

Kerry Day (Artistic Director)

Adult NK Shows and Events

22[nd] – 25[th] September: “Shrek the Musical”. What an unbelievably incredible show this was! From the cast, to the band, to the set, to the costumes, to the lights, to the singing, to the choreography…. Everything was just perfect. A massive “Congratulations” to Hannah, Amy, Ceri and Kealy who produced such an outstanding show! Great work from Dominic and the stage crew, the tech team and army of volunteers who worked incredibly hard to make sure that this iconic film came to life on stage in all its colourful glory – it was a phenomenal team effort.

29[th] -30[th] October: “The Rock N Horror Graveyard Show” The return of this popular show, for the first time heralded a live band…. Yes, they were live, not spooks! Beetlejuice and his friends played to a fully booked theatre each night and was as raunchy as ever!

October TIE Project: Our friends Poppy and Sam spent their half term on a tour of all libraries in Stockport to read the popular story “Room on The Broom” This is an exciting project that will be taken up by Outreach in the future.

20[th] November “Romiley Christmas Light Switch On”: I think we were a definite hit in our home town as we entertained Romiley as part of the Christmas light Switch on! It was an absolutely wonderful day and we were incredibly proud of everyone who performed! What a great way to kick off the festive celebrations!

6

11[th] December “Mickey’s Christmas Adventure”: Big shout out to Dawn, Director and Creator of our annual Disney Tribute. Big thank you once again to our adult members who gave three performances throughout the day to the delight of all the children who came to boo the baddies and cheer Mickey and his friends, on yet another exciting adventure where good triumphs over repentant evil.

NEW Year’s Eve “The 4 Vallis”: I know this is strictly not an NK show but after all, they are all NK Members. And what a night, so proud of each and every one of them!! With a delicious hot and cold buffet provided as well as prosecco or bucks fizz we certainly saw 2022 in with a BANG!!

8[th] February TIE Play “The Net”: We had an excellent response from all the parents who watched this hard hitting play about the dangers of The Internet, alongside an invited audience and our members from Year 4-6. Our members were so attentive and engaged with some excellent responses during the follow up workshop. The invited audience were most impressed particularly representatives from NSPCC who were interested in doing some follow up work with us in the future.

18[th] -19[th] February “Show Stoppers”: This annual tribute to The Magic of The Musicals saw extracts from some incredible and much loved musicals including 9 to 5, Calamity Jane and Joseph. Lead by Hannah, John and Amy, the dedicated cast worked very hard to bring us a musical night to remember.

17[th] -18[th] March “The Glass Menagerie”: Our first play of this season Directed by Pete Curran assisted by Freia Reidel-Fisher, with a cast of only 4 actors, was a brilliantly performed drama that displayed the talent of both director and performers.

24[th] -25[th] “March Murder Ballad”: Directed by Paul Wilson and with Ceri Graves as Musical Director, Murder Ballad is a little known musical with a small cast of performers alongside a live band with some wonderful technical elements. This really was a spectacular production and we thank Paul Wilson for bringing his vision and direction to the Forum stage once again.

20[th] -22[nd] April “Blindsided”: Direction by Jake Martin and written by Stockport playwright Simon Stephens, his gritty and emotional play depicted love, jealousy and damaged lives. Skilfully directed and superbly performed. Supported by Alex Fife, This play would grace any professional stage; such was its powerful, slick and attention to detail presentation.

3[rd] June “Jubilee Street Party”: NK certainly played an impressive part in Romiley’s Street Party celebrations for the Queens Platinum Jubilee – with performances from Our Street Dancers, NK Access, Disney Characters, The Chicagoland Blues Brothers and NK Rock School. Thousands of people took part in the festivities, and even featured on Granada Reports. This was a real team effort to make the weekend a brilliant success particularly for NKs standing in the Community

17[th] June “Till Death Us Do Part”: Our annual “Who Dun It” Written by Kerry Day and Directed by Pete Curren played to a focussed audience. Always a fun play to be a part of always enjoyed by an would be “Detectives” scribbling in their Clue Sheets to solve the murder in the hope of winning the board game Cluedo

!8[th] June “Chicagoland Blues Brothers”: We were delighted to welcome to our stage the fabulous NK Blues Brothers who together with NK’s accompanying group The Bluettes, entertained a full house with smash hit songs from the movie we all know and love, including "Everybody Needs Somebody", "Shake Your Tail Feather", "Minnie The Moocher" and many more.

23[rd] - 24[th] June “Two”: Directed by Dawn and Maisie and featuring two amazing performers this fantastic Jim Cartwright play proved to be a true showcase of multi-rolling and character acting.

Children’s and Youth Theatre Workshops

Drama

This year we re-structured (and renamed) all the drama classes and introduced our brand new drama curriculum. Over the summer, it was decided that the drama workshops were a little tired, dated and we needed to bring some new life in to the Tuesday night sessions. A lot of time and energy went in to devise, mapping, creating and writing up a new curriculum, a new format, new themes and new objectives and then this year a lot of Dawn and Maisie’s time has been spent ensuring it has been implemented as intended. At the end of the season, it was very clear to see that it had been a success, the classes were bigger, and there was a buzz on a Tuesday from the members and from the tutors and the on stage performances have definitely improved as a result of more focussed learning and developing within the classes. The process of creating this new syllabus is quite organic and will continue to grow and develop over the next two years until we have a complete three-year programme that will work on a rotation and can be adapted year on year. It is all very exciting and I am looking forward to seeing it thrive.

Performance Class

We had a brilliant year this year with Performance Class and a lot of fun. The class worked really hard throughout and absolutely threw themselves in to anything we asked of them. It was nice to do some live performances again and although we have not done a full play this year I definitely feel that what we did do was very worthwhile and enjoyed by all members. A few members of the group left at the end of the year so it will be exciting to see what new members we have next year and what they will achieve.

Summer Workshops Drama W/B 1[st] August

ATTENDANCE: Juniors: 19 Seniors: 11

This year’s summer school was organised by Maisie Noble, with support from Dawn & Freia. The week was incredibly well planned and executed brilliantly. There were plenty of trainee tutors who volunteered to help and support with the junior sessions, which made things much easier throughout the week. The behaviour was excellent and all the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves from start to finish. It was nice to see that the numbers had increased from last year and I am sure we will get some regular members joining as a result of this week. The performance of “The Magic Faraway Tree” to round of the week was excellent and was attended by a very full audience. All in all the week was a massive success and we are looking forward to next year when we are planning to make it even bigger and better!

8

GOING FORWARD IN TO NEXT SEASON:

We have a taster evening planned for the first Monday in September which will also coincide with enrolment evening and will hopefully encourage some new members to join. This will then be repeated twice more throughout the season to give new people an opportunity to learn about the company before they join.

There are a couple of big personnel changes going forward into the new season.

The first is that Dawn is stepping down as Head of Drama and Maisie Noble will be taking over. This is to allow Dawn more time to work on Outreach and as Maisie has been working alongside Dawn for two years now it was time for her to take the reins and develop the workshops in to a new era. Dawn will be staying on as a tutor and will help with the Youth Theatre Productions next season and will support Maisie, alongside Kerry, where needed. Since September, Maisie has made an excellent start as Head of Drama Workshop.

Musical Theatre – YOUTH

Our Musical classes have had a very Jam- packed year. Kicking it all off at Christmas was “We Will rock you”. I think we would all agree this was a fantastic show and certainly a memorable one, it definitely gave our members the opportunity to work on a different style of musical theatre.

When our members returned after Christmas, they were straight into rehearsals for “Magic of the Musicals Jr” in March 2022. Each class were given an Extract from a different Musical. MT1 – Disney, MT2- Joseph, MT3/4 – everyone’s talking about Jamie, they then all took part in”Rock of ages” together. Within this showcase, there were truly some real stand out moments and again a great way for our members to gain stage experience and work of different styles.

Finishing this, again they were straight into rehearsals for their next Production “High School Musical” which was a real contrast for them compared to “we will rock you”. The whole team worked particularity hard on the production and it really did pay off, on & off stage, The children & parents loved it, it was also a fantastic way for one of longest members “Maisie McHugh” to end her NK youth theatre journey as she played one of the leads which made it extra special.

In September, we started the New Year with an enrolment / taster evening which ran very differently to how it usually is. All New members had the opportunity to come along and take part in a drama session & dance sessions whilst the parents listened to all the lead tutors talk about their areas. From this Musical theatre, classes have grown tremendously. Because of the sheer amount of numbers, we now have 5 classes over 4 sessions. We decided to add the additional class in order to accommodate the new members and make sure every child still gets the attention they need when learning.

The week following enrolment, all MT classes were involved with the “HALLOWEEN SHOWCASE”. They had only 4 weeks rehearsal time, which was pushing it! However, stress aside, the members were incredible and what they achieved in such a short space of time was tremendous. We have never had so many positive messages after a show. This show is a great way to gain stage experience /confidence and perform in a different setting – in this case cabaret style.

9

Tribe / Vibe

Tribe and vibe have been training extremely hard, learning new routines that they have performed at different showcases & events. These routines are now ready to be taken around the UK and compete. I am currently looking at Paris the following year and upcoming comps across the UK. A highlight of this year was performing at The Bobby Ball Foundation in Blackpool, MADE IN MANCHESTER Festival & welcoming in new members to all Teams. This being said, we were sad to lose two members of vibe, but we are enjoying watching them both on their next journey at Uni & Drama School. Our next year objective is for our classes to take part in more dance experiences and for these classes to grow in numbers.

Saturday classes

Our Saturday classes continue to grow every term. We now have 5 Street classes and 2 Contemporary. The standard of work this year has risen again.

All Saturday classes have taken part in the MAY & Halloween showcase; both were a huge success and a great way of watching how quickly they improve at such a young age. Some children who would not even get on the stage in May were shining bright in the Halloween showcase. Again, the sheer amount of messages about this has been very rewarding. With Saturday classes our main aim is always confidence and this year we certainly achieved this in a big way and will continue to do so.

Summer School DANCE Workshop

Myself, Amy Earith and John Dean were part of a rotating timetable which consisted of 3 job roles; Lead Teacher, Teaching assistant & assistant.

The main focus of summer school was for all groups to learn 4 styles of dance. Over the first two days they would learn two styles per day, not only this but ALL members were offered an extra session to learn 2 group numbers. On Friday they all attended a full day rehearsal to finish off all routines and also for them to have the chance to meet everyone else who took part in summer school. On Saturday, they attended a session in the day to which they were on the stage, in costume & had a tech run and the full stage experience, they then returned in the evening to perform in their very own showcase. Overall, there is widespread agreement that summer school has been a huge success and what the children were able to retain and perform in just one week was outstanding.

Rock School

Rock School, with Dominic Stannage, provides the opportunity for youth members who are able to play an Instrument or sing to come together and form a band, learning the skills of performance. The class has now been placed into two separate bands as the group was getting larger. Both bands have already performed at two events.

The Romiley Traders Event and at Made In Manchester Festival. They have been going from strength to strength. Even beginning to compose their own songs.

Youth Theatre Shows and Events

3rd – 4th Sep: TO THE STAGE Hannah and Amy made sure we started the year with a bang packed full of amazing choreography, brilliant costumes and beautiful dance.

18th Sep MADE IN MANCHESTER: Our members gave a lovely rendition of “Sing” and Vibe certainly entertained with brilliant dancing at the popular music festival.

10[th] Nov TWO, ROAD, SHAKERS and BLOOD BROTHERS: The Performance Class came into their own with a series of monologues and duologues from these very popular plays.

10

30[th] & 31st March: DRAMA SHOWCASE – SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL New this season – Maisie, Dawn and the drama tutors presented an amazing celebration of William Shakespeare in this full drama production including extracts from Romeo and Juliet. 13[th] – 16th July: HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL What a show to end the year – being a childhood favourite of all the members of the production team this show was definitely a product of love and the members thoroughly enjoyed bringing it to life on stage.

11

NK Access

On 6th Dec NK Access gave us some fabulous entertainment really getting us all in the mood for Christmas Festivities, At the end of the academic year Jake Martin stepped down from leading NK Access after 12 years of service to the class. The class gave a final tribute to Jake with a fabulous NK Access performance on Wednesday 20th July, Together with their tutors they provided a wonderful hour of entertainment enjoyed by all.

Although not leaving the Company, Jake will be missed for his dedication and wonderful work with the group. Jake’s position has been filled by long standing member Lucy Worthington. Lucy has been working professionally with additional educational support for several years and is a perfect replacement for Jake.

Lucy has the continued support of Karen Hardman who has been an immense helper to Jake over the past few years. Lucy is really looking forward to bringing her skills and expertise to the class and already has a performance planned for 5th December.

Outreach

Post Covid, getting TIE up and running again has proved a huge challenge. For much of this school year schools have still been reluctant to take students out on trips, but also, they have been less likely to have companies come in to school. Combine that with a lack of funding generally across the education sector as well as a large amount of classroom time being missed over the last 18 months and we have found that TIE has not been a priority that schools can afford. We have been lucky enough to receive some funding in order to run individual projects but overall it has been a disappointing year – it is definitely time for a rebrand and to start changing our focus for this area of the company.

After School Clubs

September 2021 –July 2022: ALEXANDRA PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL - AFTER SCHOOL CLUB - DRAMA

We have been lucky to be employed again by Alexandra Park to run their after school club in drama. Maisie and Freia have been working together to provide high quality lessons for children from reception right up to year 6. They have rebooked again for next year and Maisie will be back delivering those sessions.

Performances

February 10[th] 2022: THE NET x2 – Romiley Primary School Year 5 & 6. Parents of pupils from special performance.

Romiley primary booked two performances of THE NET, one of which was externally funded by one of our company sponsors CDL, for their Years 5 & 6 students and for their parents. The head was very impressed and is keen to do more collaborative work in the future.

February 11[th] 2022: THE NET – Performance at Ladybrook Primary School

Performance of the play and follow up Q&A session with Year 5&6 at Ladybrook Primary school. The staff were very impressed and we will be following this link up in September for some potential other work.

March 28[th] 2022: STAFF INTERVIEW VISIT – The Manor Academy

We were visited by 15 students from Manor Academy who wanted to know what a working theatre was and how we operated. They asked lots of questions about our jobs and participated in a tour of the building. This is the second year the school have visited and we expect they will return again next year.

Other

October 25[th] – 29[th] 2021: Library tour of “Story World” presenting Room on the Broom

This project was funded by the Library service. We spent a week touring all the libraries in Stockport with our characters Poppy and Sam – they read the story of Room on the Broom to the children with lots of interactivity along the way. This project was a pilot and proved very popular. It is something that we hope to get funding for next season so we can expand upon it and it can grow over the 12 months.

Forward Planning

Going forward in to the new season it was decided that the company needed someone who could focus on this side of the business and growing our outreach programme. At the end of August Dawn changed roles and started in her new position as “Head of Outreach”. This is going to be the start of a major rebrand for the company with many potential projects and many ways to expand our offer out in to the borough and beyond.
