Structure, Governance and Management

Over the last year, the Trustees have strengthened the Foundation’s governance and management.

New trustees have been appointed and provided with a suitable induction. The power to appoint new trustees is vested in the existing Trustees, whose intention is to recruit an additional trustee.

Additionally, the trustees have employed a development manager, which has led to the increase in fundraising income. These changes ensure that the Foundation is wellmanaged and compliant, and increases the scope of improvements and benefits that it can offer to Schonfeld Square.

Our Mission

Our Values

Schonfeld Square Foundation's mission is to improve the lives of Jewish people who are frail and elderly.

We do this by supporting those living in Schonfeld Square Care Home and its sister schemes.

Schonfeld Square Care Homes and its sister schemes for vulnerable people are operated by Agudas Israel Housing Association (AIHA). The Schonfeld Square Foundation operates side by side with AIHA and provides additional resources and services to enhance and complement the core services delivered.

5

Our History Mrs Ita Symons establishes Schonfeld Square Care Homes, as part of Agudas Israel Housing Association, to provide residential care and respite for frail and older people. Schonfeld Square Foundation is opened, a new charity to fund and supplement the Care Homes, services. Mrs Ita Symons is awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen for her pioneering Services to Housing. What Schonfeld Square Offers

People living at Schonfeld Square are either residents in the Beis Pinchos nursing and residential home or tenants who live in the Fradel Lodge sheltered flats for independent living. Both schemes offer lovely housing as well as additional amenities, like carefully-tended gardens, spacious dining halls and sunny activity rooms.

Our ‘sister schemes’ provide supported housing where people with mental health needs can live independent lives. These are the Beis Rochel Home at 52 Lordship Park for 9 women, and 4 Rookwood Road for 7 men.

All Schonfeld Square provision offers a very high level of support and person-centred care. Two schemes – Beis Pinchos Care Home and Fradel Lodge Domiciliary Care – are CQC regulated and are rated as Good.

9

What Schonfeld Square Offers

LEISURE AND SOCIAL LIFE

Social interaction is very important to the residents. Our rich variety of programmes have made Schonfeld a community hub and a place where people are really happy. Daily activities range from exercise classes, art sessions and concerts, to trips, computer classes and immersive rooms. Visits from volunteer befrienders from the local community ensure that people never lack companionship.

I have witnessed professionalism, courtesy, good humour and sensitivity to the needs of the residents, from early morning prayers to the evening programmes.

E. R., visiting family member

David’s Story

I never wanted to be in an actual nursing home – there are so many things I can do alone. But living by myself made me feel nervous, the what-if’s ballooning in my mind. A flat in Schonfeld Square is perfect for me; I can cook when I feel like it or order in food when I’m not up to it, the staff are just behind the door and make me feel safe. And it’s the company and programmes too.

I’m discovering a whole new life here that I never dreamed possible.

Brenda’s Story My mother had been showing early signs of dementia. This had been frightening for her and for us. Staying alone in her house just wasn’t an option anymore. We turned to Schonfeld Square and felt embraced with advice and support and so many ways of helping Mommy – helping her medically, physically, and filling her days with friendship and happiness. My heart lifts each time I visit. She may not recognise me any more, true, but I recognise the serenity on her face, and I know this was the right decision.

11

Elisheva’s Story Visiting at Schonfeld Square is the highlight of my week.

I’m still at school, and visit on weekends when we’re off. I walk down to Schonfeld Square to catch up with the many dear friends I’ve made, chatting, laughing, and singing songs. I especially love when they tell me about their rich, fascinating lives. I feel connected to a bygone world and inspired to be the best I can be today.

Millie’s

Story

Nursing has always been a passion of mine, but working for Schonfeld is taking that to a whole new level. The professional development opportunities, motivated team and superior devotion of everyone here is simply humbling.

12

Covid -19

Covid posed extra challenges to our provision, considering the very vulnerable beneficiaries. There were many new expenses for medical support and therapy to help users surmount this challenge.

The vaccine rollout spelled relief for all of us – the hardworking staff and the people who live in the care homes – since it meant a revival of the Foundation’s activities, programs and social visitors. We took utmost precautions to keep residents safe AND happy. We used 17,943 LFD (rapid) tests to facilitate visits. Paid befrienders were also recruited because social visits had trickled out. Every effort was made for our activities to proceed as usual, or at the very least, as usual as possible.

13

There is no doubt that the Home is infused with a special atmosphere which can only be maintained with constant effortandinput from management, staff and volunteers, and for this we have always been most grateful. Fomily D. 14

Turning the Page; Plans for the Future

The Trustees of the Schonfeld Square Foundation intend to continue strengthening the charity over the next year. This follows after a year of managerial changes such as expanding the board of trustees and the employment of a development manager to increase efficiency and productivity.

In the upcoming year, we plan to increase fundraising income, and broaden the scope of improvements and benefits that can be offered to Schonfeld Square Homes and its sister schemes.

Plans for Major Refurbishment

Schonfeld Square Foundation is working closely with Agudas Israel Housing Association on the refurbishment of Schonfeld Square. Schonfeld Square Care Home is run on a not-for-profit basis, with the majority of residents being funded by local authorities and NHS fees. We believe that despite this, the people who live there and use its facilities should benefit from beautiful, well-maintained and modern surroundings. The design phase of the refurbishment project has started. The trustees intend to apply the Foundation’s reserves to this project, and to raise funds from major donors.

15

Accreditations

There is a culture of appreciation across the organisation and people feel appreciated for their efforts and hard work. Managers make sure that they thank people regularly and people are generally motivated by the way they are rewarded and recognised.

Financial Review

Review of the Year

The Foundation’s income doubled during the year under review. A grant was received towards an air conditioning system, which was deemed important given the vulnerability of the people who live in Schonfeld Square and rising average temperatures in the summer. This grant is held as a restricted fund, and the works will be implemented over the next year. These works will be co-funded by Agudas Israel Housing Association (AIHA).

The Foundation spent out the other charitable funds received, along with some of its reserves, to deliver the rich programme of activities set out in this report. This has resulted in a reduction in the Foundation’s reserves, and this year £158,294 has been carried forward.

Reserves Policy

The Trustees have reviewed the reserves policy and, in accordance with Charity Commission guidelines, have considered the level of unrestricted reserves, which it is appropriate for the charity to hold. The Trustees intend to use the reserves towards major refurbishments and improvements in Schonfeld Square. Reserves at the year end were £158,294 (2021 - £204,503) of which £25,000 (2021 - £9,025) were restricted.

Risk Management

The Trustees have reviewed the major risks that the charity faces and confirm that they have established systems to mitigate them.

Public Benefit

The trustees confirm that they have given due regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit.

18

Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Report of the Trustees and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).

The law applicable to charities in England and Wales, the Charities Act 2011, Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charity for that period. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:

inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Approved by order of the board of trustees on 14 November 2022 and signed on its behalf by:
