Scouts 28th Oxford (Littlemore) 2024 AGM Report

Hello all and welcome to our Annual AGM.

Please read the section reports which demonstrate another fabulous year of challenges and activities. It is always genuinely impressive to me how much the section leaders cram into the weekly meetings and camps and the variety of the activities that the young people can experience.

I would like to thank all the adult volunteers for everything that they have done and continue to do. There are many people that help at the weekly meetings and the other activities. People take a huge amount of their own personal time to deliver these amazing activities. They do it because they understand the value of giving the children these opportunities and from a sense of community spirit, but they do it mostly because they love it. I thank them all, especially Pip, JarJar and TicTac for leading the sections and the other volunteers, and Pop for his leadership of the Group .

Our Scout group is in a very healthy position . Our financials are very strong, and Tony (our Treasurer) will summarise this today. The turnover of the group is further demonstration of the programme that our leaders and volunteers put together for the children and young adults.

We are embarking on a programme of updating the facilities here. We desperately need new storage, and we are currently making enquiries through planning. We are also searching for green charitable grants to see if we can apply for an award that would allow us to replace our single glazed windows. It would be great to replace the old carpets too. Quotes are being sought for all those things.

Naturally, our fundraising is essential for activities and for HQ and grounds maintenance and futureproofing. Next month, we will be hosting our Summer Fete , which I hope you will agree is a tremendous day out. We had a record revenue last year and a significant proportion of that was from the raffle, and I’d like to make a special mention to one of our parents ‘Rambo’ for all the hard work he has done securing prizes. I hope you come along and join in on the 6[th] of July .

The Scout Association has made several demands about the way Scout groups manage themselves in future. As a result of this we have made changes to how the group Scout Executive Committee will operate. The first important point to mention is that this committee is now called the Trustee Board (in truth we changed the name last year but not necessarily how it operated). The Trustee Board is responsible for Safety, Trustee and Appointment Compliance, Budget Management and Reputational Risk. The Trustees meet formally approximately four times a year and have the legal responsibility for the charitable status of the group and their dedicated responsibilities.

Other issues that the old Exec used to discuss, and the much more interesting discussions , are related to Fundraising, Community Relations, Programme Planning, Recruitment and HQ & Grounds Maintenance. This is a much more informal meeting and will occur six to eight times a year. We have called this gathering the Group Management Committee , and this is an excellent opportunity for parents to join in, express their ideas, to see how the group operates and to use their skills to influence this and for the benefit of the whole group. There is a presentation of slides that explain these changes pinned up on the noticeboards outside of the kitchen. Please read, and comment!

Please approach any of the leaders, Trustees, and other volunteers, and I want to thank all of those who helped over the last years and are putting themselves forward this. I hope you have a tremendous day. Food and games, good friends and colleagues. I hope I get a chance to speak to many of you.

Steven Richards, Chair of the Trustee Board

Beaver Colony Report to end of March 2024

Another year of adventures and fun. Thank you to our Leaders, our regular parent helpers who have volunteered to join the Beaver Team. If you would like to get involved, please come and talk to us.

We currently have 15 Beavers. We continue to have a great mix of new Beavers coming in and we enjoy seeing our older Beavers moving on to Cubs and settling in so well.

Activities and Attendance

Fayre flyer Delivery – 9 Beaver District Sports Day – 5 Beaver District Fun Day – 7 Blackberry Day Hike – 14 Harvest Festival – 5 Rivermead to Church Hike – 13 Heyford Meadow visit – 9 Fireworks at 28th Oxford – 10 Oxford Spires District Camp – 10 OxClean Litter Pick – 5

Hike Sleepover (older Beavers with Cubs) – 2 Remembrance Day (Beavers with their parents) – 4

We have been so lucky this year to have our first camp under canvas, in a real tent. District Camp was a fantastic opportunity for 10 of our Beavers. For some it was their first ever experience of sleeping away from home, and for many their very first experience of sleeping in a tent. Our Beavers arrived early on Saturday for a very busy weekend of adventures and activities. On Saturday, the Beavers tried crate stacking, zipwire, archery, orienteering. We played giant games and had great fun meeting the Birds of Prey. We had a fantastic time at the campfire with lots of funny songs and actions to learn. On Sunday, we had free choice, so the Beavers tried Junk Percussion, knot tying, balloon modelling and pizza oven.

When asked if they would come again, it was a resounding YES! We are so proud of all our Beavers and want to say a big thank you to our parents for letting us take them away to enjoy this very special occasion! We would like to say a huge thank you to all the leaders from 28th Oxford for coming and helping out in so many different ways. Also, a huge thank you to the District Team and the Youlbury Staff for making this camp a fantastic experience which will lead to more opportunities and enthusiasm for our next camping experience.

This year we have managed to complete some more Hikes around the local area. One of which was new to us and led by Chill and Rann, our 2 very helpful and amazing parent volunteers. A big thank you to them for checking out and planning the route. Our Beaver Sports Day involved lots of games and activities to help us work on our Team Challenge Badge. The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts (and families) who attended OXclean this year did a fantastic job of helping to make Littlemore tidy. Everyone who saw us were very happy to see us being involved and said thank you!

Wednesday Nights at Beavers. Once again, we have been doing lots of different activities to complete badges. There have also been challenges to try at home.

● Knot tying

● Navigation and maps ● Fire safety, singing round the fire ● Water-fight ● First aid and accidents ● International food, flags and greetings ● Penny hikes ● Harvest at the Church ● Cinnamon rolls and Sausage plaits ● Green Cross Code ● Machine design and building with Sandra - thank you!

● Festivals and celebrations - Chinese New Year, Remembrance, St George’s Day and the King’s Coronation

At home our Beavers have been completing their Book Readers Badge and designing machines. We have really benefited from OSM badges at home where parents and Beavers can upload badge work and see which Badges they are close to completing. We love to see photos, videos and hear all about what they have been getting up

Badges – 140 awarded. Through hard work at our sessions and work completed at home our Beavers have completed a lot of different badges. Well done Beavers – Keep up the good work!!

Bronze Awards. We have awarded 5 Chief Scout Bronze Awards since June. Congratulations to Brains, Duggee, Stefan, Bug and Quinlan! This is the top award you can gain in Beavers. We have another 2 due to be awarded very soon.

Special Award. A big CONGRATULATIONS to Little Friend who received her 20 Years Service at the closing ceremony of Oxford Spires District camp this year. Thank you, parents, for the help you give our Beavers to complete these tasks.

Thanks to all our Leaders and parent helpers who have made it all possible. Thank you to Baloo and Iggy for their ongoing support. Also, thanks must be given to the parents and other supporters who have helped us throughout the year. Any help is very welcome in the future – please come and chat to us. We would love for you to come and get involved.

Cub Pack Report to end of March 2024

The last 12 months has been a successful and fun filled year for all involved in the 28th cub pack, we couldn’t have done any of the events or evenings without the help of the leaders and section helpers who have volunteered and given up their time and energy to help the Cub team.

We currently have 24 Cubs and average around 20-24 each Thursday evening. We have sent 12 cubs up to scouts in the last twelve months and have welcomed 6 beavers. We have also been able to welcome 3 young people off the waiting list.

In the last twelve months cubs have had the opportunity to take part in many different events and have had a great turn out for all of them.

Ready steady cook camp- 15 May camp 2023 - 15 District camp- 15 Autumn/winter hike day- 15 Hike sleepover-16 OXclean- 10 Remembrance Day parade -14 Pizza sleepover-15 Climbing night at Brooke’s university -20 Cub adventure sleepover -12

All the events have had positive feedback from all the cubs who attended, their parents and the leaders involved, many of the cubs have been asking for more of these events in the coming year especially the hike sleepovers.

Since the last AGM the Cubs have earned a total of 198 badges , 24 more than last year, with 7 of those being a chief scout silver award the highest award a young person can earn while in cubs.

In the last twelve months Cubs have been enjoying a varied program including Baggy’s always popular hike nights, map reading and wide games up at shotover. Thanks to Baloo the cubs were able to complete the DIY badge spread over 3 Thursday nights cubs were able to practise using tools and then build their DIY project of making a bat box all cubs were able to take a completed bat box home at the end of the 3rd evening.

Other activities cubs have taken part in on Thursday evenings include:

The cubs always come into each Thursday evenings eager and enthusiastic to learn new skills.

Thank you to Baggy, Baloo, Igloo and Keanu who have been an amazing part of the cub team this year their enthusiasm and energy on a Thursday evening and on weekend events have made this year at cubs so easy to enjoy. Thank you to Pop, Kim, Pip and Tictac who have supported cubs this year by coming along to cub night and weekend events. Also, a thank you to the parents who have helped and supported their cubs and the cub section this year.

Georgia (Jarjar) O’Loughlin, Cub Leader, Baggy, Baloo, Igloo and Keanu and the rest of the Cub team

Scout Troop Report to end of March 2024

200 badges awarded in the last 12 months for a whole range of Scouting activities by members of the Troop. 3 Chief Scout Gold awards achieved . Congratulations to Dylan Munday, Mason Smith and Luke Lloyd.

The Troop have managed to camp most months over the last 12 months meaning that some of our Scouts have now achieved 35 nights away. Their cooking skills have improved, and food quality is excellent at camp!

Summer camp at Cricket Camp, included a trip to the Historic dockyard at Portsmouth, learning to play Pétanque and some hiking and kayaking. A wide game in the country park was enjoyed by all. We were joined as usual by the 10th and 43rd Oxford. The Scouts all camped as Patrols, responsible for their own cooking and washing up!

At the HQ on Troop nights, we have made cardboard pizza ovens, done backwoods cooking, practiced tent pitching and cooking soup. We had visits from outside guests teaching us about the history of Gunpowder and fireworks, the history of items from the Pitt River Museum, a presentation about the World Scout Jamboree in Korea and how to make sweets. We went out to play wide games, did short hikes and learned how to ring Church Bells at St Andrew’s Church in Headington. Some members of the Troop attended the Young Aviators’ Day and had the chance to fly in small aircraft.

We are currently planning for this year’s Summer Camp which will be very special as we are heading off to the Essex International Jamboree. A huge gathering of Scouts and Guides from across the world. It bears a higher cost than our usual Summer Camp and the Scouts and their parents have been doing a sterling job fundraising for the additionally needed funds. Their events have included a craft stall, a car boot sale, and a pub quiz which in total has raised approximately £1500. We are really grateful to them for their hard work. We have in addition managed to raise some additional funds through Grants. A huge thank you to all the Scout Troop leadership team. This year Justin, Liam and Chris have obtained their Minibus driving licences, many hours of training and testing, meaning that now we have several leaders that can drive Scouts in minibuses to activities when needed. Jake has returned from Uni and joined our Troop team. Oscar has gone to Uni but returns in the holidays.

Thank you to Justin, Chris, Liam, Neil and Jake for their constant weekly support. Also, to Dave and Charlie who help when they are able.

Helen (Pip) Doling, Scout Leader, Thank you to Justin, Chris, Liam, Neil and Jake for their constant weekly support. Also, to Dave and Charlie who help when they are able.
